5 out of 5 stars Mick and the Boys.......2007-04-04

Just one more addition, to the sterling collection of the boys from London. As a fan since the release of Picture Book (1985) and seeing them live at the Beacon in New York City, Simply Red can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. Having everything they have released on CD and just as much on the original vinyl they originally released their sound on. Consumate performers they are, it's always a pleausre to have a cornucopia of all the greatest hits, with one having to shuffle assorted Simply Red releases to find the assorted hits. One more salute to Mick and the boys still Holding Back the Years.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for your collection.......2007-01-10

I just bought this cd to add to my growing collection of "must haves". It brings back wonderful memories and is a very thorough, comprehensive collection of Simply Red hits, it's just missing a couple of favs, hence the 4 stars.

Tina Turner's phenomenal reclamation of her stardom is perfectly chronicled on Simply the Best. With the exception of the Phil Spector epic "River Deep, Mountain High," everything included here comes from 1983 on. Turner's iconic voice and bluesy earnestness surface on a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." She brings a moody sensuality to "I Can't Stand the Rain." Equally adept at rock, soul, gospel, and R&B, Turner makes ordinary songs such as "Typical Male" and "Private Dancer" into extraordinary recordings. There are actually better Tina albums than Simply the Best, but it stands as a useful compilation of her comeback hits. --Steve Gdula

4 out of 5 stars Tina Turner simply the BEST.......2006-08-18

Just good old rythem and blues rock and roll !!!

4 out of 5 stars Tina "turns you on" Turner. A real hit machine from a quality artist.......2006-04-17

Tina sings most of here songs as she`s twisting here soul in painfull directions, but she does it with so much passion, so much flair, that you feel shaken all over listen to it. Track 1 The Best is a good exampel of that. She screams, she nearly spits the message right trough. A good opener.
Track 2 What`s love got to with it it`s my all time Turner favourite songs. It has everything, from the postmodern 80 ths disco style, with the right touches on the keyboard, and the laidback klimpering rythmic guitar. A more sensitive laidback vocal from Tina Turner shows here from a softer side. This is a very upliftin song, which shines with a big S. Track 3 I can`t stand the rain, is more in "nowhere land". It has a certain sting, but it`s not a kick, soul, or heart starter. Track 4 I don`t wanna lose you.Well we are back in "hit song quality" land. The refrain is very good on this one. Track 5 Nutbush city limits is fast and furious in a positive sense. It realy swings and twist you around. Fast. very fast, and Tina voice never slips away. Track 6 Let`s stay together, is more in the middle of the road. An easy come and easy go song. Track 7 Private Dancer has the flair of the 80 th`s. Here voice sounds peculiar on this one. Not to found of this song, sorry to say. Track 8 We don`t need another hero, has much of the quality spark as Track 2. It touches on every right buttons, and has a refrain that realy hit`s a nerve when listen to it. Track 9 Better be good to me is written by Chinn/ Chapman, and you know what you get from these people. Easy come easy go pop music. Track 10 River Deep/ Mountain High, is the "wall of the sound" on this CD. This is old Tina, and is more raw and not too much polished. Not my cup of tea. Track 11 Steamy windows. Tina goes "heavy metal light". Very pulsative this one, and it kicks ass man. That`s for sure.
Track 12 Typical Male, it`s quite rythmic but there you have most of the song in a nutshell. The refrain is anyway quite interesting. Track 13 It takes two, is a duet with Rod Stewart. An interesting switch for a change, but nothing special. Track 14 Addicted to Love is a Robert Palmer hit. Recorded live, but it fit`s Palmer better than Tina. It`s recorded live, but the "live sound" it`s nothing special. Track 15 Be tender with me Baby, is full of passion, but sometimes much of it can be too much, but certainly ok. Track 16 I want you near me, is the lighthearted and funny song . It`s very much summer here and ok for a hot day. Track 17 Way of the world is a forgettable song. Here and there it`s ok, but as a whole it doesn`t spark. Track 18 Love Thing. Heavy metal riffs. Ok singing. But there you have most of it. Anyway most of the time Tina Turner "turns you on" . She`s anyway a real hit machine. This collection is a good intro to here solo stuff from the 80 ths and the 90 ths. And she`s got IT.

I love this album, especially the title song. In 1994, the New York Rangers used this song as a lift up to carry them to the Stanley Cup.

5 out of 5 stars perfect selection for commencement/ graduation.......2007-06-11

We were concerned after reading some other reviews that this version of Pomp and Circumstance wouldn't be the correct movement or the full length version. This selection has the song for graduation AND the extended length, so it gives plenty of time for processionals. If this is what you need, this is the CD to get.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point for Classical Music Novices.......2004-08-13

"Simply the Best Classicial Anthems" is exactly what the title indicates. This is a collection of what the CD says are "36 of the most powerful classics on Earth". My review of this CD comes from someone who is a Classical Music Novice. I'm familiar with some of the composers, musical styles, musical periods, and some of the terminology that is key to understanding Classical Music. By no means am I an expert. I have basically popped in this two CD collection into my player and have enjoyed the sounds it produces. If you are in the same category as I am or maybe just wanting to be introduced to Classical Music - this is going to be a very good CD to have in your collection. For the more seasoned Classical Music fan, this could be either enjoyable or overkill.

The CD contains 36 songs composed by the legends of Classical Music Composers from the past. The bulk of the works come from Composers in the the 19th and 20th century, but there are works from the Romantic and Classical eras of the late 18th and early 19th century (such as Beethoven and Mozart). In general you will find most of the major names of Composers you would expect to find - names such as Tchiakovsky, Handel, Verdi, Strauss, Elgar, and Bach are all there. The only major composer who I would have expected to see on this CD that I don't see is Frederic Chopin. The composers of the late 20th century are not included on this collection - so you won't see Leonard Bernstein or John Williams on this set. While these Composers are excellent, I do think style of the tracks on this collection pre-date their style.

The recordings themselves are done by the great Orchestras around the world. For the most part, European Orchestras were used to deliver the tracks. There are a few exceptions: The Chicago Symphony Orchestra delivers "The Ride of the Valkyries"; The Toronto Symphony Orchestra delivers "Dance of the Knights"; and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra delivers Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Some of the European Orchestras that are well known include: BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, Choeur Philhamonique de Strasbourg, and more. Also included are performances by well known names in the Classical space such as Marie-Claire Alain (Bach's "Toccate and Fogue in D Minor" and Saint-Saens' "Symphony for Organ No 3"), Piero Toso (Vivaldi's "Allegro From Spring - Four Seasons"), and Placido Domingo appears on Puccini's "Nessun Dorma".

The 2 Disc collection contains a total of over 2 hours and 6 minutes of music. The selections that are included in the set will sound very familiar to you when you play them. You probably have both heard and seen the names of tracks such as: Oref's "O Fortuna"; Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man"; Beethoven's "First Movement from Symphony Number 5" and "Ode To Joy"; Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance", and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Many of the other tracks will also sound familiar, but maybe not so much by name - such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries", Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathoustra"; Grieg's "Piano Concerto", and "Dies Irae" (versions included by Mozart and Verdi - you can compare the two and judge for yourself). As for the Discs themselves, I think most of the casual fans will like the selections on Disc Two better, but Disc One is still very good. On a sidebar, the Israel Philharmonic's version of "1812 Overture" is by far the best you will hear - particularly at the end, the booming drums create almost a 3 dimensional vision of fireworks being launched into the air.

There one big negative on this collection is some of the recording quality. The clarity of the recording is there, but some of the recording levels leave a lot to be desired. On some of the softer parts, it is barely audible without significantly turning up your volume. This is very evident on "O Fortuna" where you will hear almost dead silence during from the 30 second to 1:30 mark of the track unless you crank your volume up. Same with the first few seconds of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathoustra" and Tchiakovsky's "1812 Overture". When the volume is cranked up you will hear them - but then the other sections will be way too loud. I'm surprised with modern technology that this couldn't be addressed better.

The liner notes are pretty thin. You do get the Composers, Performers/Orchestras, and recording dates. There isn't any more details than that and you won't learn anymore insight on the tracks than this information. Despite some of the shortcomings of the liner notes and recording volume, I still think this is an excellent place to start and do recommend this CD if you are a novice to Classical Music and are looking for a great place to start listening to what the Classics have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars **An Exquisite Album**.......2004-02-21

Simply The Best Classical Anthems

Simply The Best Classical Anthems is a compilation album of `36 of the most powerful Anthems on Earth'. But, it is also said to be something else. It is said to be a gateway. A gateway to another world. A world where our imagination can run free without being shackled down by any borders or boundaries or rules or limits. A world that we have all seen or perhaps more accurately have all heard of but for many of us a world that we have never dared to enter. Never dared to enter because of fear. The fear of being ostracised and shunned by our community.

THE MYTH
`Classical Music!', I can hear some of you cry. `That isn't another world. That's just music for the upperclass, the high-brow, and the pompous.' Surprisingly, I too felt this way for a long time until I accepted the invitation made to me by Simply The Best Classical Anthems. I always felt that Classical Music was nice to listen to as background music for a Levis ad or a Car ad but I would consider people strange if they chose to hear it on its own. However, after having listened to this album I realised how wrong I was in my assumptions.

THE TRUTH
Music as with all forms of amusement helps to take you away from where you are now. It helps to relax you when you are stressed with anger; it helps to give you strength when you are vulnerable; it helps to keep your spirits up when you have faced tragedy or loss. It helps. And, for me the type of music that best conjures up the most passionate emotions (love, hate, courage and anger) at our most testing times is Classical Music.
How? I don't know.
Why? I don't know.
I can only promise you that in my experience it does.

THE CHEST
The album, in visual terms, is very difficult to overlook amongst the plethora of records that may surround it. This is because the album has a very distinct purple sleeve cover. Not any kind of purple mind you but the Cadbury's kind of purple. The kind of purple that carries with it an invitation. An invitation that if accepted promises you a treasure inside.
And since, I have always enjoyed the treasure within the purple Cadbury's Dairy Milk wrapper, I asked myself why would an album carrying the same invitation promise to be anything different? Thus, I parted with my tuppence worth and went back home to open this purple chest of promised treasures.

THE PROMISED TREASURE
As you may have guessed, the contents of the album are somewhat different to the contents of a Cadbury's bar. When I opened the album, I was presented with two compact discs. At first glance, there did not seem to be anything special about them. They were just your average, everyday, run of the mill compact discs. To tell you the truth, I was a bit disappointed because I suppose I had hoped for something more.
However, looks can be deceptive. (Afterall, a Cadbury's Dairy Milk does not seem very appetising until you taste it!) And, also come November each year, I am always bemused and surprised at how the shabby contents of a cardboard box can both light up the sky and light up the faces of the neighbourhood. Thus, I pushed aside my assumptions and I ignited the discs (not literally of course, I just pressed the play button on the CD player). And, I let the fireworks begin.

THE KEY
From the very beginning, you will feel like you have unlocked the doorway to something special. And, after a full two hours of listening to both discs, you will feel like you have been taken out of this world and transported to another. Welcome to the world of Classical Music.

GUIDANCE
In the beginning, continue to listen to both discs in one go (i.e. one after the other). After a while, you will know which tracks you enjoy listening to the most. For those tracks you enjoyed the most make a promise to yourself that you will listen to the whole of the piece from which that track came from.
Good Luck on your quest if you choose to accept it.
Ride amongst the Valkyries, listen to the Flight of the Bumblebees, and use The Planets to keep you on the path.

I am not a good reviewer because as with all of my reviews I refuse to comment too much about what is inside the product but rather more about what effect the product has had on me. (Me, me, me. Vain & Egotistic, I know, so my friends and family keep telling me). But, I just want to cause a raucous about the product, enough not to spoil but enough of a raucous to let you experience it for yourself.

So my final words are:
Simply The Best Classical Anthems is an invitation. An invitation to the world of classical music. A world where you can begin a never-ending quest of curiosity. A curiosity that will always be rewarded with fulfilment.

Do you accept such an invitation?

Hope you found this review helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Samples.......2003-11-23

The samples are too short and the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Having said that the choices are wonderful and the price is great. If you're looking for a overview of the best of classical music then this is for you. However if it's quality you're looking for then spent the extra money and look at other choices.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampler!.......2002-03-20

This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus."

There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," "'Promenade' from Pictures at an Exhibition." The compilers did an interesting double take by including both Verdi's and Mozart's "Dies Ire." I'm not sure which is better.

This music is good for the brain and good for the soul. There is a power and passion that the blaring and glaring music that makes up most of the FM band. I'm reminded of the religious man who said that there is no music in hell. Probably because they wouldn't appreciate it there.

These CDs has a good transfer from the analogue tapes; there is no hiss or fuzziness. The packaging hearkens back to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the black monolith. And appropriately, "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is the opening track on Disk 2.

Album Description

Import collection from one of the most under-rated bands of the '60s. Led by keyboardist/main songwriter Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone, the Zombies not only were a great singles band, but they also managed to create some of the finest full lengths of the era, the most popular being their final album Odessey & Oracle from 1968. This handy collection features 18 tracks including 'Time Of The Season', 'She's Not There', 'Whenever You're Ready', 'Summertime' and 'Tell Her No'. Every track a true classic that will inspire the listener to seek out even more Zombies aural action. EMI.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Just like I remembered it........2007-06-27

Great music. Really enjoyed listening to the songs I enjoyed as a teenager. Great quality.

3 out of 5 stars Good compilation, but it's not enough.......2003-09-18

The Zombies were one of the finest rock groups of the sixties. It's no surprise they still get oldies and classic rock airplay. Needless to say, over the years, a number of compilations have been released for these guys. How does this one measure up? Read on and find out.

PROS:
-If you're the casual Zombies fan who just wants to get Time Of The Season, She's Not There, and Tell Her No on one disc, you've come to the right place!
-There are a plethora of underrated masterpieces here as well.
-You get two bonus tracks - alternative versions to two of the band's biggest hits.

CONS:
-The major problem with this compilation is that it's hard to come by. You may have to search a few stores before you find it.
-It's only fifty minutes long, and you can fit eighty minutes onto a CD.

OVERALL:
If you're a casual fan of the Zombies (and nothing more), than this compilation is recommended. These guys played REAL rock and roll, not the junk that has flooded the airwaves in the modern age.

5 out of 5 stars All the songs I wanted are here........2003-05-14

All the songs that I wanted are here:
( 1 ) Time of the Season, which can be heard on the film Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Nero.
( 2 ) Tell Her No.
( 3 ) She's Not There.
( 4 ) Summertime. For those who are not sure that they like the operatic vocal style, i.e., Porgy and Bess, this version of Summertime is an excellent way to get your George Gershwin.

Track #14, "Whenever You're Ready," sounds a bit like "I'll be Back," from the Beatles' Hard Day's Night. Whenever You're Ready could have been a hit in its own right, in my opinion. I also believe that track #16, Remember You, could have been a hit if it had been given airplay in the 1960s.

One problem though with this compilation is that the sound quality is harsh. At times, the piano sound is distorted. The presentation of the sound also seems to lack any 3-dimensional effect. I compared She's Not There from this compilation with that on a Time-Life compilation, Classic Rock 1964. The version on the Time-Life compilation is beautiful, with a nice
3-dimensional effect in the presentation of the sound, and with no harshness whatsoever. The 5 stars go to the timeless classics, mentioned above. But the sound quality deserves two stars.

5 out of 5 stars really the best.......2000-05-21

This is the best Zombie compilation on the market today. This cd has great tracks. I'm a huge Zombies fan, and I have many of their albums. This is the one that stands out from the others. This has the rock, jazz, r&b, the works. The only other Zombies album that could come close to this one is the other Zombies best of import, but that one is too school boy if you know what I mean. I guess only true Zombies fans know what that means. This is a great look at The Zombies music.

There's only one complaint to be voiced about this best-of collection, which includes a great deal of material never previously available on CD: the lack of remastering. The scratches and static mar an otherwise crisp and energetic rendition of "Sweet Home Chicago," and may interfere with one's enjoyment of the clean, expressive guitar on "Drivin' Wheel." What can't be denied, however, is the compelling combination of Earl Hooker's virtuosity with an expressiveness that made his guitar solos far more than mere noodling. Just listen to his guitar work on the opening track, Muddy Waters's take on the classic "You Shook Me"--Hooker's guitar complements Waters's smoking vocals perfectly. In addition to much of his own material, chiefly from the late 1960s, this collection also features two tracks recorded with Johnny "Big Moose" Walker, including a slow-burning take on "The Sky Is Crying." He also backs up the late blues-R&B great Charles Brown on "Drifting Blues," and closes with a duet on "If You Miss 'Em... I Got 'Em" with his much more famous second cousin, John Lee. Earl Hooker's never had the name recognition accorded to T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, or others who started trends in the blues or even achieved crossover success. But he's a well-known name among bluesmen themselves, and Simply the Best illustrates why quite handily. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Another Earl Hooker Classic.......2007-07-14

The late great Earl Hooker can continue to be remembered fondly on this record that dovetails perfectly with his classic "Two Bugs and A Roach."

This is a compilation that shows off Hooker and a frontman and sideman, working with such luminaries as his second cousin, the great John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Brownie McGee and Sonny Terry, Charles Brown, and his excellent vocalist on "Two Bugs," Andrew Odom. He thrills on such choice cuts as "Hookin'," "Frog Hop," "Tanya," "Universal Rock," "They Call It Stormy Monday," and others.

Get this one to go with "Two Bugs And A Roach," and appreciate another great bluesman who left us too soon.

5 out of 5 stars The title says plenty.......2007-03-15

Earl Hooker might be the most overlooked Chicago blues guy out there. He is for the most part electric, with fuzz wah effects and plays very good slide style. This particular disc is nice because it samples several different albums that he played on.

4 out of 5 stars Great musician, good collection.......2004-04-26

John Lee Hooker's younger cousin Earl Zebedee Hooker was a highly skilled slide guitarist, inspired by the great Robert Nighthawk, and possessing the smoothest of fretboard touches.
This collection opens with Muddy Waters' 1961 recording of "You Shook Me", the only time Waters ever relinquished the position of slide lead guitarist to anyone.

Earl Hooker wasn't the best or most exciting singer, and several of these 19 tracks are instrumentals or feature lead vocals by other artists, cousin John Lee among them.
Six instrumentals may be a bit too much for some, but just think of them as long solos...Hooker's playing really is that good! And he is backed by a slew of great musicians, including guitaris/pianist Ike Turner, saxists Donald Hankins and A.C. Reed, and keyboardist Johnny "Big Moose" Walker, who also takes the lead vocal on a couple of tracks (the great "Is You Ever Seen A One-eyed Woman Cry", which featured Walker, is unfortunately missing).

Johnny "Big Moose" Walker also plays a lot of great blues piano on this disc, and Earl Hooker himself sings reasonably well on "Sweet Home Chicago" and the swinging boogie of "Don't Have To Worry". Andrew "Big Voice" Odom does a great "Come To Me Baby" and a good "They Call It Stormy Monday", harpist Sonny Terry performs his own "When I Was Drinkin'", and finally Charles Brown himself guests on a 1969 rendition of his own "Drifting Blues".

There are a couple of duds here, including the weird "Universal Rock" which utilizes electronic gimmicks like wah-wah pedals and distortion units. And even with Hooker's playing, Big Moose Walker's take on "The Sky Is Crying" pales next to Elmore James' original.
But the majority of these tracks are very good, and they go a long way towards explaining why an almost tearful B.B. King once said to Buddy Guy: "Nobody can play a slide that clean!"
Well, except Earl Hooker.

5 out of 5 stars Another Under Rated Blues Super Star!!!.......2004-02-10

There are three great legendary blues guitarist who I have always felt have never received the recognition that they so justly deserve. Guitar Slim, Magic Sam, and this man Earl Hooker. This could be because these three legends had past away so young and at the pinnacle of what would have been long lasting and exstensive careers. This cd is an historic testament to a remarkable blues man. Earl Hooker is innovator. One of the first in Chicago to use wah and fuzz pedals. Years ahead of the great Jimi Hendrix. Beatiful guitar playing from the soul is what you will find on this cd. Do youself a favor pick it up today.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars why release this ???.......2003-10-21

Last year Capitol released "Simply the best" on DVD and a lot of fans were very disappointed with it. The 1991 laserdisc release had even more tracks on it then the new DVD release???
Capitol/EMI should release a complete video anthology of Turner starting with "Ball of confusion" from 1982 to "Whatever you need" in 2000 ! Why release this cd/combo set ? only for die hard fans who want to spend money and get nothing extra. I'm a very big Turner fan, but I am going to pass on this one...

3 out of 5 stars Only for Fans and the Uninitiated.......2003-10-01

No new liner notes, no real change to the packaging besides a nifty blue inset. Even as a fan I feel cheated. If you own the DVD and the CD, there's really no reason to buy this. If you own neither, this is an economical way to have a double shot of the Once and Future Queen of Soul. Most of us crazy Tina fans will probably buy it anyway- love is pain after all. But what's love got to do with it? Someone had to say it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Chocolate - Relive the 70's and Get your Groove on.......2004-12-26

Hot chocolate, definitely had the Disco Groove going on. Let the band and Errol Brown bring you back to the 70's hayday with groovy tracks such as ... You Sexy Thing, So You Win Again, Every 1's A Winner, Get Down On It amongst others. If you like Hot Chocolate this is your fix for the complete album.

Get It and Get Down!

4 out of 5 stars A good collection at a great price.......2003-02-04

Although I think the collection "Every 1's A Winner - the Very Best of Hot Chocolate" (red cover) is a little better retrospective, you can't beat the price for this CD. With its focus on Hot Chocolate's 1970s songs, it leaves off a couple of good 80s tunes, but it includes the essential tracks You Sexy Thing and Every 1's A Winner. Some may even prefer this one, because it also includes some good songs not found on the other album. (So get both - I did!) Although a few songs sound like filler, there are plenty of catchy melodies and great rhythms.
