Tank, on Sex, Love & Pain, is like Luther Vandross only slightly lewder: He'll be the first to admit, as he does on the three-part opening track "Coldest," that he's "somewhat of a hustler out here on the street... occasional strip clubs and shots of Hennessy." That doesn't stop him from laying his heart on the line, though. Repeatedly. Midtempo grooves like "I'm Coming Home," a hopeful reunion song, and "Heartbreaker," a limber-voiced lament that outlines a crumbled relationship, show Tank's tender side and take the romantically inclined places more real-seeming than Luther's songs. Throughout the long lineup of love-gone-wrong tracks, the brawny guy with the tattooed back doesn't forget his playful side, either. Anticipated this album so much, but it turned out to be a let down. Most of the songs sounded the same, you would think he would write himself a lot of #1 hits as he has done for others but it just wasn't the case here. I really gave it a 3 because I still think he is so sexy.

I'm so sorry but this album did nothing for me. I keep buying his albums and he keeps having like a good 3 songs on each album that I totally love. I dubbed a copy and sold the orginal.
There may be someone out there that likes this album but it just wasn't working for me.

quick review: Rhcp is one of the best bands ever! if you love their funk/funk get this album! it mixes funk, hip hop, and rock for an awesome, original sound! the best are: suck my kiss, give it away, blood sugar sex magik, under the bridge, sir psycho sexy. but almost every song sounds good! a rare feat for artists! they took their time to create this great album! if you noticed when they do a hits album, most of the songs come from this album b/c the songs are so good!

Everyone likes saving money right? Ok, here's how to save money if you like the RHCP, buy this album from their catalogue only! If you must listen to the new stuff, turn on any popular radio station for no longer than ten minutes and get your fix. This album falls into the very exclusive "masterpiece" club. Every and I mean EVERY song on this album is perfect. The songs flow in unity from start to finish. This album sounds like nothing before it and nothing after it, besides every RHCP release which follows. Which brings me back to saving money. Now there's nothing wrong with the RHCP releases after this album there all good but only one or two songs from every album stands up to the complete Blood Sugar album. Its almost as if they release new albums to suck in new young fans that haven't heard the album before the new one. This is the RHCP at their very best and all one needs to satisfy the RHCP bug.

The person below me is an absolute ignorant a-hole. 311 has zero artistic value when in comparison with RHCP. Call me when 311 writes ANYTHING with the merit that even begins to touch "Under the Bridge." Have you even heard of something called chord progression? because I'll tell you one thing, 311 sure hasn't.

And I can't believe that you even have audacity to bring up lyrics. First of all, most of the songs are funk rock, Thusly, it's party music: i.e. Sir Psycho Sexy, which is brilliant in its own way. Secondly, the songs that do call for different lyrical composition come through in every which way. Are you seriosuly trying to tell me that 311 has a song more meaningful than "Power of Equality?" Do you even listen to the lyrics? I think not.

Lyrical abilities aside, you must realize that you are basically taking Chad Smith, and extremely respected rock drummer, John Frusciante, hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and Flea, (debatably)THE greatest rock bassist of all time, and saying that what many people believe is their greatest piece of work in BSSM, is garbage. I just hope you didn't listen one time and write that bull****. If so, your review is all the more less credible because you fail to realize one of the most key compenents to good music; the fact that it grows on you and it takes more than one listen. You just can't absorb it all in one take.

I have nothing against 311, they're not a bad band. But it's hard to give you any respect when you rip a band like Nirvana at the end of your review. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but you have to see that you are contradicting yourself when millions of people love BSSM and Nevermind and you just shut that down like you are some kind of all knowing god.

Anyways, just to add some of my own opinion, this is my favorite album of all time and will always be. I feel like although the chili peppers have moved on and continue to make world class music they will never top what they did in 1991. Just too much emotion, attitude and musical ability when into that album. They went into it with something to prove and just ripped it up. I think Stadium Arcadium is definitely a step down for them. It's a great record but it lacks some of the artistic maerit that they had in their last four albums (minus OHM).

First off, this isn't an apology to Brian, because you don't deserve it, you ignorant A-hole.

The Peppers have their own sound, but it's too bad they suck. THe band (besides Anthony) are very talented, but the playing just don't go together very well. I like 311 better because they play funk better, they don't seem to try to force everything, everything just goes together so well, their synergy is just great.

Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer because they just don't seem to fit together. No doubt the whole band is very talented, but they go together, they just dont' seem to blend as well. Anthony is a cheesy vocalist. The lyrics on here are mostly on the same topic, sex and drugs, which gets old after a while. He can't sing either. His later lyrics cleary were a step up from the pointless lyrics he does during this time.

Basically, I dont like their sound, although the bass is something to check out. It's not worth it to me, I find nothing special about this band, although I give them points for talent and originality.

a mix of old and new.......2007-06-16

What I like best about this album is that you get a peak of their past funk style and their jump over the threshold into rock. It has every element of their many layered canvas. No band is more honest or true to themselves as this band. Although 'Under the Bridge' became their signature song at the time, it pays to listen to every song before this classic. Anything after Naked in the Rain, which follows UTB is a bit more graphic and may need to be monitored for younger audiences. My favorite is the funky rock tune, Righteous and the Wicked which proceeds immediately to the best version (studio versus live) of 'Give it Away'. You will not be sorry. Any new RHCP fan must appreciate their past to love their present.

The Way Punk Rock Should Sound.......2007-07-01

Give me some of that pure Rock 'n' Roll sound!
This is the only 'true'Sex Pistols album and really the only one you need.
Considered by many to be one of the front-runners of punk, but I do believe Iggy Pop and The (Mighty) Stooges did Punk better. Having said that,this has been one of my first punk albums at the tender age of 11 and it instantly opened my ears to a whole new sound of Rock that I never realized existed.
Immediately I could feel the Raw intensity of Johnny Rotten's maniacal voice, snotty, in your face type of attitude bleeds through the speakers from the Wildman that is Rotten himself. One of the first songs - "Bodies" is a perfect example of the pure punk attitude I am referring to - Animalistic fury. Screaming bloody mess! Real Brit Punk, heck Real punk period, out of 1977.
There have been many imitators since The Pistols, but why not pick up the original, in all it's aggressive devestating glory (?)

I don't think I ever heard a debut punk record as good as this. They just don't exist, but yes, this album here did help me on my search for real punk and DIY type bands.
Highlights of mine are "Bodies" - "God Save the Queen" - "Pretty Vacant" & of course the song that the band is known for "Anarchy In the U.K."- Turn it Up, Loud! (the way it's meant to be heard)
...Forget The Clash, sure they were a great band, but if Anarchy had a voice it would be Johnny Rotten's.

Good , Classic Punk .......2007-06-22

This Sex Pistols CD is fantastic,and (to me anyway) has aged well. I still find it rousing and energizing.

Johnny's voice is snide and proud. Why shouldn't it be , he had the best set of rags a punk at the time could wear, but getting back to the music and his voice, it's just a very well put together collection.

I love his opening of "Anarchy" with his sarcastic, sinister chuckle!


I agree that The Sex Pistols are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT musically than The Clash who are New Wave music ,like Blondie.

"Classic Vintage Punk" is what I consider The Sex Pistols, and this CD is EXCELLENT !

"Anarchy", "God Save the Queen" are real pioneer songs now. The political venom of the period.


Also "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant are just as aggressive and exciting as they were back then.

Highly recommended and deservingly over rated !

The people who nit pick about who is "punk", who is more musically adept are missing the point with The Pistol's.
I love all kinds of music, play guitar myself and was never into the punk scene and what went with it.
However, I'll never forget the first time I heard this album and the impact it had on me. It was devastating.
I may have Mozart or Sarah Brightman or The Stones or Coldplay in the CD changer tonight. Maybe Buddy Guy or some Verdi.

Then every so often I will stick in my well worn copy of NMTBITSP and from the moment I hear those marching boots and Steve Jones thunderous Les Paul crashing out the opening chords to Anarchy in the UK ...........I am suddenly 19 years old again with "no feelings..for any body else....except for myself...my beautiful self". Utterly unique and one of rock & roll's brilliant defining moments.

The Sex Pistols album Nevermind the Bollocks is completely amazing. I would say its one of the best hardcore punk albums ever(some other ones are the Ramones and The Clashes London Calling. Every song on it is pure classic, from Johnny Rottens insane vocals on Anarchy in the U.K., to Sid Viciouss nice bass lines on Submission. Nothing has been put out that compares to it as Johnny once said in a interview, and indeed hes right. Because today in 2007 punk rock is a bunch of nice guys who where makeup. Some of these bands are Green Day, Blink 182 and soforth. These type of bands dont deserve to be called punk rock because its a disgrace to all of the grat punk bands. If your a punk fan and dont have it you need it, PERIOD!!!!!

A Nevermind Replacement? Well... kinda.......2007-06-26

Ideally yes, this is better than Nevermind The Bollocks in terms of giving you all the essential Pistols tracks (if you get the imported 20 track version versus the 17 track version). That being said, some change in mastering must have occurred between this and the latest cd release of Bollocks because these tracks sound a little hollow ("tinny") compared to that CD.

Truthfully, the difference is not enough to bother anyone except for more astute or intense fans who are used to the sound of the songs already. So, if you're a newcomer to the Pistols, this is a great start and possibly finish to your collection. If you're already a fan and just want everything in one place, maybe not so much. Plus, it's the edited version of "No Fun", which just sort of cuts off at the end. Wish they would just sell the first disc of the boxed set separately.

Pistols Rock.......2007-06-13

For some unknown reason this band produced some fantastic songs that stand the test of time.Problem is they were not around long enough,and not enough songs were made.Some will argue but to me the songs are inspirational,and can get you fired up.Now their songs do have emotion in them.Its like they realy meant what they said.The best song is Bodies.Yes i know it has not got the geatest lyrics,the subject is unusual to make a song about - abortion.But the way he sings that song,its just amazing and it realy gets to me,and when its finished you have to play it again.That song gets me going in the morning,when you just want to go back to bed.Holidays In The Sun is another great song,man that is a great song.The whole album of Bullocks was a sensation.Pretty Vacant was a hit from Bullocks and is another great song.A track that is missing from here is lonely Boy by Steve Jones.He did the bulk of guitars on Bullocks after Glen Matlock left.Sid did not play too well and hardly did anything on it.He has a tune here called My Way.Great song,hard to follow his accent without the lyrics.He did have another 2 songs not here on the Swindle which could have been put here -Something Else and Come On Everybody.But realy there is the best of them here.Its realy sad Sid died so young,but in reality he didnt contribute that much musicly to them.I have 2 concerts from their American tour in 1978.They were great shows,but you find that you end up milking the well for more Pistols tracks,there simply is not enough.Another favorite song of mine is New York,i love that tune just brilliant.No Feelings and Liar are also great tracks.There is not one bad song here.

The Same Version at Two Prices?.......2007-06-05

Beware that there are two prices for what appears to be the same CD, and both advertise the same track listings on Amazon. I paid $28.99, thinking I would get an expanded version, yet there is a $15.49 price for what appears to be the same CD. The $28.99 product is NOT a two CD set.
I think the merchant needs to clarify what is exactly on both versions and not advertise the same version at two different prices. It's very confusing because the labels are identical. Hence the three stars. Other than that, my version has all my favorites except for "Friggin in the Rigger," but not the extras some customers mentioned. Sound quality could be better; it's a little muffled, but much better than my old cassettes and the nostalgia is well worth it. A great tension releaser/tonic. Don't know if the the $15.49 version is any better, but I don't want to futz with an exchange.

One needs only two Sex Pistols' albums: "Never Mind the Bollocks" and "Rock n Roll Swindle." There's just nothing out there that even remotely resembles the Pistols' version of 'Roadrunner' ("Steve, wait...wait....I don't know the f'n words!") and the pieces by Jones and Cook are excellent, and a great preview of their work together in The Professionals. For those who wish to go deeper, in addition to "Swindle" and "Bollocks," I'd recommend John Lydon's first album with PIL featuring "Religion I & II," ("Fat pig priest, sanctimonious smile...") along with PIL's greatest hits or Metal Box, also any work Lydon did with Leftfield, e.g. "Open Up"; anything by The Professionals is great ("I Didn't See It Coming"), and the soundtrack to 'Sid & Nancy' if only for the atmosphere provided by Pray for Rain and The Pogues. (By the way, if interested, you can probably find a few clips of Steve Jones and The Professionals in action on YouTube. Highly entertaining.)

Sex Pistols - 'Kiss This:The Best Of The.....' (EMI).......2006-06-21

Not only do you get every track here from the notorious clods of British punk's 1977's sole 'proper' record 'Never Mind The Bollocks', but this CD reissue has extra cuts that may not appeal to most anyone but possibly the completists. As always, it's a total scream listening to "Pretty Vacant", "Holidays In The Sun", "Bodies" and "Liar". Twenty songs total, decent compilation.

While Keith Morris's former bandmates Black Flag continued down the path they started and made increasingly complicated music much to the disdain of hardcore fans, the Circle Jerks made stupid short fast songs that were more than enough to satisfy hardcore fans everywhere. This album is just a masterpeice. My favorite songs are probably Beverly Hills, Wasted and Don't Care, but as short as the album is I just listen to the whole thing nonstop every time without putting emphasis on any particular songs. In my mind this album is just plain great from start to finish. If you dont have it and you like Keith's work with Black Flag, any other Circle Jerks albums or just great early california hardcore buy it without hesitation.

14 songs in about 15 minutes... incredible. They dudes helped pave the way for hardcore... The tracks are raw... no filler, to the point. One of the great albums ever recorded. Any real fan of punk should own this.

Wild near-classic.......2007-04-12

This teen punker contains a clutch of SoCal anthems that still resonate with the skate crowd - or anybody who likes good punk done well. While not altogether consistent from song to song, its appeal comes from acknowledged classics like "Wild in the Streets" - maybe their most recognizable tune. Any respectable mosh-pit would be sent into a frenzy with most of these tunes. Their spirit of teen angst is never too heavy, and their sense of humor buoys the sharp punk style.

This is undoubtedly one of the greatest albums ever made. Every song is outstanding. There is not a single filler track, nothing to skip. From start to finish it is pure joy and it's all over before you know it.

Primitive, raw, angry, fast and loud. Back Against The Wall clocks in at 1:35 and it's the longest song on this all to brief album. Ah, the eighties, sniff, and a more perfect introduction to LA hardcore can't be found. Singer Keith Morris proves there's life after Black Flag (his original band) and the Jerks come close to topping all the competition on this their debut album. Essential L.A. hardcore punk.

A Collection From One of the Best..........2003-06-05

When I think back to 80's country and recollect the best 'artists' of the time, I think of Rosanne Cash, Earl Thomas Conley, Judds, Lyle Lovett, and K.T. Oslin. Each of these artists brought so much freshness to country music. I loved Oslin, which surprised me because I never thought I would love music by a middle-aged sex bomb, but she is so full of sass, creativity, and she has some very fun songs that are realistic and not over-blown. I love "Hold Me", which was a bold single to release to country radio (thankfully they loved it!), "Come Next Monday", "This Woman", and "Hey Bobby" are all songs that broke down barriers about how 'country women' should be and what 'country women' should sing about. My all-time favorite of hers is "80's Ladies", which seems weird since I'm a guy and at the time the song came out, I was only in my early 20's, but that song has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard and they are so honest to what women her age had been through in their lives. I especially love the ending of the song, which sounds like a nursery rhyme, but accounts what each of the 'girls from school' ended up doing with their lives. I will always remember K.T. being the best of the 80's; a strong and vibrant woman who wasn't afraid to break down the weaker sex stereotypes. If she had been my mother, I wouldn't have been embarrassed of her at all, I would have held my head high and said, "Yep, that's my mom!"

Required Listening.......2003-05-26

This is K.D. at her finest. This woman has always stood apart from the crowd of bowers and scrapers doing whatever the industry dictates to get a hit song. She's nervy, she's strong, she's independent, and she's ungodly sexy. Some of her songs send shivers cascading down my spine.

Don't miss out. This lady is one of the music industry's best examples of a reason for existing.

K.D. Darlin', Where Are You?.......2003-05-26

I am a diehard fan of K.T. Oslin. I have been hopelessly in love with her since the eighties when her megahit, Eighties Ladies, dominated the airwaves. I mentally worship at her feet and have erotic dreams about meeting her in person.

The title song of this album, "Live Close By, Visit Often", lyrically expresses my own take on relationships (and probably that of many others of us baby boomers as we ooze past middle age) and was the catalyst that spurred my purchase of this CD. I found this song to to be perky and aggressive, very much in keeping with K.D.'s style from the beginning til now. It definitely validated my purchase.

Unfortunately, it's by far the best song of a CD that serves mainly to emphasize that the ravages of age (facelifted photos on the cover not withstanding) are gonna gitcha if ya don't watch out--in more than just the looks department. K.D. puts forth a valiant effort to project her former power and vocally cynical interpretation, but succeeds only intermittently. When she fails, she's painfully reminiscent of a 60-year-old Nancy Sinatra attempting (and failing) to sing "These Boots Are Made For Walking" (shudder).

K.D.'s strength here lies in her up-tempo songs. She whips out "Live Close By", "Somebody's Leavin' Somebody", and "Mexico Road" with her traditional upbeat spirit and power. "Mean To Me", a big-band torch song rendition, is also rendered acceptably. Unfortunately, every slow song on the album (and there are too many) causes the listener (at least, this listener) to wince.

The album ends up with K.D.'s rendition of the Rosemary Clooney classic, "Come On-a My House", originally a provocatively sexy, seductively up-tempo tune. But here, incomprehensibly, it has been transformed into a slow, eerie, sound-effect-filled production worthy of theme music for a Twilight Zone episode. All the driving, demanding sexuality of the original is missing (yes (sob)... K.D. did a sexual song without sexuality).

This huge, cartoonish Californian crew, helmed by concept-man Shock-G, seized on the ultra-bassy funk woob-woob of Parliament-Funkadelic as the platform for its ensemble tomfoolery. At its best, it's inspired, daffy give-and-take that you can shake your rump to, especially on the hits "Doowutchalike" and "The Humpty Dance" and the ridiculous aquatic hip-hop fantasia "Underwater Rimes." At times, though, an uncomfortable current of leering misogyny surfaces. The disc ends with a suite of tracks about an imaginary safe-sex drug, the "sex packets" of the title. The concept gets stretched pretty thin, but "Packet Man," a cunning dialogue between Shock G (as a dealer) and his Groucho-nosed alter ego Humpty Hump (as his customer), is outright adorable. --Douglas Wolk

Great Album! Never to be forgotten. I was just getting out of High school when this album had dropped and it really blew me away when I first heard the entire album. At first I heard the humpty dance and thought that in order for me to get this album, I had to listen to it first and its a very versitile one. Songs such as freaks of the industry, Do what U like, and underwater rimes really set the album off. other tracks like gut fest 89 and danger zone were definitely the bomb. This album is timeless and will never fade away. One more thing. When the original album came out, ther were more tracks on it which included certain excerpts of underground DU mixes. If anyone know how to acess that or may have a way of gettin it pls let me know. thxs

I like this cd b/c its part rap and part FUNK. Parliment Funkadelic is sampled to the max but that is a good thing.

The 2 best songs are Humpty Dance and Dowatchyalike. Great party tunes with a cool, perverted sense of humor. The rest of the songs are good, but the others are the standouts.

The music is not dated b/c funk/ P-funk is timeless. I love to upset hardcore rappers by telling them that Tupac never did any better than when he was with the Digital Underground.

Want to get a party started or even better ...get lucky? Put on the Humpty Dance for your significant other, dance around with no shame or inhibitions, and your honey will just melt. Who can resist "my nose is like a pickle and in the 69 position it'll tickle your rear" (I think that's the lyric)

A 3 and 1/2 star album that is uniquly creative.......2006-06-16

Sex Packets by Digital Underground is a creative and different album. However, it can't be compared to some deserving five star albums such as the Chronic and various Run DMC albums. Sex packets is an energetic party album, but it isn't going to be considered a classic. It has one hit song "The Humpty Dance" which saves the album but aside from that song it is a fairly average album

Funny Music.......2005-05-09

These guys are a under rated duo. All there songs are nice and they can have a pop feel to them without reaching for radio airplay like 50 Cent and Puff Daddy do these days. There are many songs on here that sound like "The Humpty Dance" and they all sound Fresh for 2005 let alone 1990.

Somthing's Missing Here.......2004-04-21

I remember first buying the cassette at my local swap-meet back in the day. It was when I was fooled into believing that Shock-G and Humpty were 2 different people. I still have that cassette to this day. I did notice that on that cassette, there was a track that isn't included with this CD. That track was called "Hip Hop Doll". It was also a B-side of Doowutchyalike on the 12" back in the day. Other that this missing classic, it is a good CD to purchase. If it had "Hip Hop Doll" on here, it would be worth 5 stars instead of 4 stars.

On albums like State of the Heart, Shooting Straight in the Dark, and Come on Come On, Mary Chapin Carpenter melded folkie singer-songwriter concerns with melodies and hooks that country (and, occasionally, adult-pop) radio programmers could get behind foursquare. Since those late-'80s/early-'90s high points, the Brown University graduate has often pushed niceties such as catchiness to the artistic back burner. Despite some too-languid stretches, Time* Sex* Love*, her first studio disc since 1996, finds Carpenter recapturing some of the balance that marked the best of those earlier records. "In the Name of Love" lifts off with a trademark midtempo groove and a complex lyric about attraction and independence. Other tracks subtly spice Carpenter's formula with lovely, sighing vocal harmonies and fleeting evocations of Beatles-era AM radio. Her need to attempt major statements about the sad realities of grownup life may ultimately be Time's biggest flaw; where's Carpenter hiding her gifts for limning small moments (State's "This Shirt") or events that few other songwriters would think to commit to tape (Shooting's comet-appearance commemoration "Halley Came to Jackson")? Melodic Treat!.......2006-10-28

For years Mary Chapin Carpenter has been labeled a C&W artist and for a while country music embraced her, and it's a good thing they did for if not she would still probably be doing nightly gigs at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and no one except those fortunate few would get to hear her. Now that she's established she can do what what she wants and if this is it, I couldn't be more pleased.
This is a beautiful album full of memorable melodies and emotionally passionate lyrics. She has always written with passion and truth and is in my opinion one of the finest songwriters ever. C&W she is not and fans of Shawn Colvin and Ali DiFranco should check this out.

A real mixed bag from a great talent.......2004-05-09

Let's get one thing straight. Mary Chapin Carpenter is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time, bar none. Her previous and subsequent albums have been consistently stellar and far more ambitious and intelligent than anything her contemporaries have tossed at us. And if "Time*Sex*Love*" were presented by any other artist, it would rank as a career highlight. So why am I only giving it three stars? Because this is the only one of her albums that I have trouble listening to from start to finish without skipping tracks.

Why is this? Because there are just too many slow, sound-alike ballads in the middle of the piece (five, to be exact), sandwiched around the uptempo "This is Me Leaving You," which is probably one of the weakest songs Carpenter has ever written. The album just drags for me, and doesn't seem nearly as vital or alive as "Stones in the Road" or "Come On Come On," or even this year's "Between Here and Gone." Carpenter has always been generous with the number of songs presented, but with fourteen songs and a bonus track she would have been well-advised to cut one of the ballads to aid in the album's momentum.

That said, there are many things to like about this album as well. The '60's throwback sounds of "Maybe World," which would sound right at home on a Mamas and the Papas album; the insightful and beautiful "Late for Your Life," which she has taken to closing concerts with; the eloquent plea to slow down and enjoy life which is "The Long Way Home"; and the first single "Simple Life," which bombed on country radio evidently because it dealt with issues other than chasing men or crying over busted romances. Ironically, the first half of the album is the best, when the reverse is usually true with this artist.

I know I'll be in trouble with other fans for not loving this album, but sorry. I love Carpenter's music, whether its the fun, uptempo stuff or the slow, beautifully observed ballads. This one, however, just doesn't have the same effect on me as her other albums. But make no mistake, second-rate Carpenter is still better than anything Faith, Martina, Shania, Reba and JoDee put out on their best days.

Quiet Reflections.......2004-04-25

This is one of Mary Chapin Carpenter's best albums she's recorded yet. I look forward to her new one BETWEEN HERE AND GONE with lots of excitement. *TIME *SEX *LOVE is a great CD of reflective songs that you will more than likely enjoy. Her first new album since the lackluster 1996 album A PLACE IN THE WORLD, this is a step in the right direction. There's some really nice ballads with her warm vocals all over them. "Alone But Not Lonely" is a favorite of mine, some really nice lyrics and a nice melody. The closing "Late For Your Life" is also nice, and it has a bonus hidden track. "What Was It Like" is another great ballad, heartbreaking. There's some nice uptempo songs like "Slave to the Beauty", "Whenever You're Ready", "In The Name Of Love", "This Is Me Leaving You", etc. Other good songs include "King of Love", "Swept Away", "The Dreaming Road" and "Someone Else's Prayer". Overall a strong album from Mary Chapin Carpenter that should have a place in every CD collection!

She keeps growing as she goes...........2003-10-01

and so should all of us. As much as I love every other album she has sung, I love this one as another step forward in life. More experiences, more lessons learned, more choices---reflections based on new directions taken as we grow older.

Unlike some of the other slightly disappointed reviewers, I WANT MCC to keep evolving by turning over new stones in a new road. She is being honest and true to herself, and I love the woman and hearing the voice of that woman as her life changes.

It's obvious that she continues to grow, and I want to hear what new things she's discovered. My loyalty is to the woman and the messages she shares. I have no expectations except a rewarding experience and a sense of continued identity as MCC continues to sing.

Today, I am feeling especially connected and spiritual, because last night I heard Mary Chapin, Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin singing live and intimately sharing conversation with each other and their Pittsburgh audience. Strength and beauty, self-discovery and sharing, hard-won choices and coping with reality, stories of everyday life and consequences of loving---all underlined by driving guitars and ghosts I could identify with.

These songs are art for enjoyment and enrichment. These are artists reaching out to their audience and trusting us to benefit from their gifts. That's how I receive their songs. How could I object to them?

Underappreciated Music.......2003-08-18

I think Robert Plant had things summed up pretty well when he was commenting about Led Zeppelin's third album. He noted that many fans had responded by asking (paraphrasing), "But where is our "Whole Lotta Love Parts II, III and IV?"

Time*Sex*Love* is not "Stones in the Road". Neither is it "Come On" nor is it "Shooting Straight in the Dark". It is also not any of the other fine works from this artist. It offers something different than what preceded it, although one can clearly hear some similarities to earlier material. (So for the folks who might be afraid that MCC's angelic voice may not even be recognizable, relax.)

Music evolves...artists change too. If that weren't the case, then pretty soon everything would begin to sound exactly the same and where's the fun in that?

Mary Chapin Carpenter is an excellent songwriter. She took some different approaches on this album (yes...they are still albums). Some people (at least one of whom thought it was time to respond to the "critics") think it's great when an artist tries new ideas. Others seem to think that an artist somehow "owes" it to the fans to simply repeat or reorganize the songs that have made the artist popular.

Time*Sex*Love* is very good music. It's enough that an artist of Mary Chapin Carpenter's skill and performing talent composes lyrics and music and then gets into a studio with other talented folks who can expand the basic idea into a work of art.

Thanks to MCC for having courage to try new ideas and making them work. I was really happy to find that the album (I cheated and used a CD) was not musically identical to any of the other MCC albums I own.

Stereophonics' fifth album will inevitably provide more material for the band's critics, if only for the fact its title has clearly been rather lazily inspired from the back of a rental video case. The music within, however, is anything but laid-back: the employment of Argentinean drummer Javier Weyler, who replaces founding member Stuart Cable, sees the band venturing further along the hard-rock path that spawned previous denim-and-leather-clad tracks like "Moviestar". The first three tracks find frontman Kelly Jones is in downbeat mood, his vocals drawled and insouciant, and his lyrics distinctly sour--take the raging "Doorman", where he rails against some faceless bouncer with surprising and rather paranoid ferocity: "You like nothing more than to break my face/ You like to throw me out on the street!". Things sweeten towards the album's middle, providing two of the album's stand-out tracks: the chiming, electronic-tinged "Dakota" is a light, buoyant anthem that deserves to be a hit, while "Rewind" is a reflective moment that pricks memories of mid-period U2. But on the whole, Language. Sex. Violence. Other? isn't an album out to win new fans - it's an album that caters to the Stereophonics' rock faithful, and it's them who'll really dig it. --Louis Pattison

There's some great stuff on this. Some of it's a little poppy, like Dakota, but for all out ball crunching rock, take a listen to Deadhead or Devil - Devil's just superb. Thought the band was heading down a more bluesy road until I heard this album. Terrific stuff.

It's Been Emotional.......2006-03-13

On paper it doesn't bode well. Stuart Cable, the arse-bearing gonzoid party fiend who acted as the sole respite from the po-faced demeanour of the Stereophonics, was given the boot at the tail-end of fourth album You Gotta Go There To Come Back's promotional duties. The trio of Cable, drummer Richard Jones and commanding officer Kelly Jones had built up a massive UK following since humble Welsh beginnings in the 1990s, however it was only Cable's effervescent personality that made the group interesting music magazine fodder. While their albums - mighty debut Word Gets Around, Performance And Cocktails, Just Enough Education To Perform and You Gotta Go There To Come Back - sold like proverbial hotcakes in the UK (just like their Australian equivalent Powderfinger), it didn't always mean that their music sounded inspired or progressive (just like their Australian equivalent Powderfinger). Without joker Cable to fluff about unconventionally during recording, Kelly Jones - the pint-sized dictator of the Cwmaman group - has apparently now seized total control of Stereophonics, with the resulting Language. Sex. Volence. Other? being a new beast entirely. From the sneery opening sound of Superman (with its `You don't know what it's like' refrain baiting the media in a similar manner to former single Mr Writer), Jones takes his vocals to a higher plane than earlier works, with his guitar dipping into equal parts funk and fuzz. Such is Kelly's change in song delivery that on Brother - almost certainly a flimsily hidden diss directed at former pal Cable - his singing will surely have even long-time Stereophonics fans raising eyebrows in surprise. There's still the required tally of songs detailing birds, pubs and humdrum lifestyles, but Language. Sex. Violence. Other? finds tracks such as Dakota and Deadhead registering as their finest work since 1997's Local Boy In The Photograph saw them explode onto the international scene. When Kelly quotes Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels' Big Chris in the sleeve note thank yous with the departing line `It's been emotional', odds are you'll believe him.

I am one of the many who bought and loved this band's first lp then kind of let this band slip away. 'Local boy' was the epitome of a heartfelt, irresistable pop song but then nothing really jumped out.
I read a few interesting reviews of this new lp, so when I saw it in a second hand shop at a delicious price, I ventured forth with the moolah. I was half expecting another journo-cashola pay off hype where's the tunes type situation and a return trip to the store with tail between legs.

Nope! This is a stunning return to form. Some blistering songs, swaggering riffs, great meaty production, enough to mobilize some air guitar when the wife's not looking and a couple of beautiful songs too.

The likes of 'Doorman', 'Devil' and 'Girl' make your toe tap and the hips gyrate whilst 'Lolita' and 'Feel' are just gorgeous summer songs. Then there's the chirpy 'Dakota' with its slamming chorus to round it off.

Hope they do a US club tour because this set plus a few oldies will be one goood night out. Can't wait to hear what they do next.

Pure Rock and Roll.......2006-01-08

This is the album that I've been waiting and looking for. Amazing. There really isn't a better word to describe it. This is pure rock and roll at its best. I'm a huge fan of Brit rock to begin with, and Stereophonics are a perfect modle of how great Brit rock should sound. I got turned on to these guys from the Wicker Park soundtrack where I heard their song "Maybe Tomorrow", which made me go out and buy their album You Got to Go There to Come Back. That album itself I found incredible, which made me want to hear how they had evolved as a band; henceforth, I went out and bought Language. This is a totally different sound than the aforementioned album, but one to be embraced. Kelly Jones has easily become one of my favorite lyricists and vocalists. His raspy vocals just lodge in the brain and keep the lyrics repeating in your mind. But the music is just clever in a way that other bands have seemed to want to abandon somewhat. Others may compare Stereophonics with Oasis or Coldplay or other Brit bands, but I think they've got their own sound, which is a mixture of many different types of music. But this review isn't supposed to be about the band, but the album right? Right off, from the beginning, with "Superman", this record takes off. In fact, the only songs that I don't fancy on the entire album are "Doorman", and "Girl", and they're not even that bad. I've got a fondness especially for "Devil","Rewind", and the standout of the album, "Dakota", but the whole thing rocks and just makes you happy. I can't think of many other records that do that to me.
A must have.

Social Distortion is back ! .......2007-04-11

Social Distortion brings to the table a feel of rock, rebellion and good times, but have a way of bringing it about in a deep and meaningful way in this record. Clearly the ability and depth of the band is revealed in "Sex, Love and Rock `n' Roll"; this is not just a record to "make a buck" and this is evidenced through their remaining faithful to their roots (the hard edged quality to the lyrics and songs), yet their ability to evolve in the songs.

"Reach for the Sky" seems to be the catchiest of the tunes. It has "radio play" written all over it, but the song is addictive, kind of one of those songs that just comes at you with its guitar riffs at the beginning and its memorable lyrics: "Reach for the sky `cause tomorrow may never come." The song is all about carpe diem: living for today and taking advantage of things while you still have a chance. Who cares if it is a little mainstream? This is a signature Social D song with a moral: the kind of song you want to turn up.

Other notable songs on the disc are "Nickel and Dimes", another upbeat song with the signature sound of Social Distortion and "I Wasn't Born to Follow", the lyrics seem to embody the Social D persona: "When I grow up, gonna be a star. Gonna sing my songs and play my guitar, I'm ready." One of the my favorites is the last track, "Angel's Wings", which is a bit in between hard and soft rock, but seems to evoke feelings of not being stuck in one mode in life, but living life trusting in fate: "Angel's wing won't you carry me home." Another great song is "Winners and Losers", a song that seems to be about the good and bad in life and people, and how everything has its place but keeps pushing on.

Over all, this is just a great rock CD, one that you won't get sick of like so much other stuff out there. This is one of those CDs that gets better with age and begins to grow on you. It becomes somewhat of a habit after awhile. So, when you take a road trip, or are just hanging out with friends, be sure to pop in this one and crank it up!

The Triumphant Return Of Social Distortion..........2007-03-30

"Sex Love & Rock n Roll" is the first studio album from Social Distortion in 8 years. Mike Ness had alot of material to work with when putting together this album. During the bands hiatus, Social Distortion lost guitar player Dennis Danell to a brain anuerism in 2000. Danell had been with the band from the beginning and, along with Ness, was the foundation that the band was built on.

Clearly, this album is a tribute to Dennis. Mike Ness has often said that he felt as though a piece of his youth died with Dennis. The resounding themes of this album is being a man, coping with loss, and dealing with love. These are subjects that are very easy to relate to.

For the most part, this album is classic social distortion. Anyone who saw them during their scattered shows during hiatus is probably very familiar with most of the songs on this album anyway as many of them had already become mainstays of their live set over the 5 years preceding this albums release. There are a few tracks, however, that are there basically just to fill up the album. Still, most of the songs are incredible. The highlights are...

I was Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell(Kuwait)when I bought the latest Social D cd. I must have played this CD over 100x during my deployment.
After 100 times, I still listen to Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll
at least once a week. Mike Ness proves that Social D only gets better with time.

Mike Ness needs to give it up!!!.......2006-10-03

I really liked Social D. at one time in my life until I recently seen them live a few weeks ago. I thought Mike Ness was nothing more than boring and down right ignorant. The rest of the band was good, but when the bands frontman can't do much, but say "this next song is about or is.". Give me a break. Mike Ness kept bashing people in Hollywood and politics. He seemed really immature and pointless. I think he really tried to be a tough guy that night. I seen Agnostic Front about a year ago and the frontman Roger Miret is straight up a tough guy just looking at him, but he didn't have to make a seen of himself. Actually he was really kewl with the crowd and appreiciated everyone unlike Mike Ness's fake a.. . Plain and simple Mike Ness is a fake, but maybe back in the day he wasn't until he became stuck on himself. Oh yeah, Roger Miret has more and even cooler tatts.

I DON'T CARE, if this is them "selling out" or "going pop" or even "becoming the wallflowers" (who I have personally never heard). I DON'T CARE about any of that, because I like the music. That's right, I HEAR the songs and I LIKE them and I don't really THINK about whether or not I'll still be a bonafide Hardcore (pronounced Hard [pause] CORE) kid.

Oh, and they used organs on mommy's little monster, so get over it.
