A New View of Otis Redding.......2006-05-06
Instead of compiling the usual best of, Concord Music asked Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T. & the M.G.s and the Stax house band, to collect his favorite Otis Redding. Given the intimacy of his association (he played on virtually everything Redding ever recorded), it's a natural.
And Cropper doesn't disappoint. His thirteen picks are pretty tough to argue with. Hearing "Champagne and Wine", "Direct Me" or "Good to Me" in this context sheds a whole new light on them. It's almost like having new music from Redding.
What's really interesting is that "My Lover's Prayer" or "Mr. Pitiful" are the closest things to a hit on this CD. There's no "(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay" or "Respect" or "Try A Little Tenderness". Musicians frequently hear things we non-musicians don't, or at least hear them differently, and it would have been fascinating to have had Cropper share the reasons for his choices.
My only criticism of this CD is that there are six tracks listed as alternate takes, and on the majority of them I can find no difference between them and the final issues. No extra verses, different intros, mixes, etc. If differences exist, they're undetectable to this layman's ear.
But the recent (2005) remastering is excellent, preserving the mass of the recordings while articulating their sonic detail and separation. In fact, it's so good I wish Redding's entire catalog would be re-done. Most-high kudos to Joe Tarantino.
Soul music is, in my estimation, the greatest thing American culture has given the world. And Stax probably had the best. And this installment of the 'Stax Profiles' series will even give you your recommended daily allowance at a budget price point.
Given the short shelf lives of CDs these days, I'd get up offa that thang and get this now. It's wonderful, real and true.

Pink Floyd's drummer goes new age on second solo effort.......2006-05-23
At the time of this album's creation, Pink Floyd was on an uncertain hiatus(not different from today) and Nick was the last of the four classic PF members to come out with a sophomore solo effort.
Profiles, like 1981's Fictitious Sports, was Nick collaborating with Rick Fenn and created an album that had its moments but then at the same time was not as good as Fictitious Sports IMHO(as I found out when I got the CD in December of 1994).
The album only contains two tracks with vocals. The first was Lie For a Lie which featured Nick's Floyd-mate David Gilmour on lead vocals and is the album's best track. The other Israel was deplorable with Danny Peyronel on vocals and sounds like David Bowie on LSD IMHO!
Then the rest of the album is instrumental. While Malta, Black Ice, Mumbo Jumbo, Profiles Parts 1 and 2 and Profiles Part 3 are classics, the other instrumentals Rhoda, And the Address, Zip Code and At the End of the Day are just either bad outtakes from a bad B-movie film score or just yawn inducing.
Profiles puttered out at #124 on Billboard and like Fictitious Sports stiffed.
This album is currently out of print. If you are a Floyd die-hard(like me), scoop up. Otherwise, approach with caution.
You Will be Surprised.......2006-04-23
Obviously, instrumental music does not have words to engage the listener. It requires effective use of melody to hook the listener, draw them in, and hold their attention. As well for me, the best collections of music have always been those that were formed in such a away that their actual structure - the placing of songs in an order that somehow fit - created a novel, a story, a chain. This is such a work.
Like the best symphonies from classical music, of which there are many, they are not composed of dissparate tracks, but pieces to a puzzle. Profiles is such an album, and I consider it one of the finest pieces in my collection. People are never less than surprised to know who is responsible for it when they hear it.
You SHOULD add this to your collection.
