Through a wash of shimmering, overdriven guitars and thunderous drums, a thickly accented Glaswegian voice rises and falls across a soundscape of sweeping expanse. And so goes the Twilight Sad's full-length debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, nine songs of ambitious scope and widescreen proportions. Each track is a mini-epic right down to its ornate title, like the blazing, blaring "Talking with Fireworks / Here, It Never Snowed," and "That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy," an evocative and affecting account of adolescent romantic bewilderment. The band's nearly overwhelming wall of sound means there's no shortage of aural stimulus to fill up the listener's ears, but penetrate the surface of this circuitous and clamorous record, and you'll find the Twilight Sad are concealing bewitching songs underneath all that noise. --Ben Heege

1 out of 5 stars Below Mediocre.......2007-07-12

This album is below mediocre, I wish I never took the time to listen to this rubbish. To buy this album is to buy nice looking coaster (because the album art doesn't offend me).

If you care for my advice, do not waste the time buying this album or listening to it...This band might be something else live but they have nothing spectacular in this album. The only benefit in buying this album could be the possibility that it allows them to afford a few more music lessons.

5 out of 5 stars One of 2007's top albums.......2007-06-22

I can't stop listening to this album. Singer James Graham's thick brogue is startling at first, then heartily endearing- much like much of the album's material. The thick layers of noise, overdriven guitar, and accordion pull you into a wash of atmosphere and emotion, where the epic scope of the songs buried underneath tear through to your very core. Anyone who knocks this album for Graham's accent either simply didn't give him a chance or has no taste in music.

5 out of 5 stars Think I'm in love..........2007-06-14

If you like The Walkmen and Interpol, you'll love these guys. I am in new band love right now. Plus they have awesome accents that will melt your heart, or maybe I'm just too American...

5 out of 5 stars one of the best debuts of 2007 yet to date.......2007-06-08

Along with The Field and Battles, The Twilight Sad makes 2007 a good start off for new sounds. This album may sound like an ordinary "indie" rock album, but the way the guitars are performed is very atmospheric that it even resembled Sigur Ros (Don't worry I'm not comparing them or anything, just saying their guitars are thick layered). In general, this album contains both power and softness, and the band members really know how to perform as an ensemble.
and stop bitching about the vocalist's Scottish accent.

2 out of 5 stars Not much of a connection.......2007-06-05

It's not the vocals, or the lack of melody that mothered me. It was lack of connection.

5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2004-02-17

Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett all have had successful individual careers (especially Bok, who is perhaps New England's foremost regional singer/storyteller/guitarist), but they have been best known as this collective for many years. Trickett plays acoustic guitar and hammered dulcimer and Bok a deep-throated twelve-string, and all have strong and complementary singing voices. The material is core "gentle folk music," with input from both traditional and contemporary original sources (e.g., Bok, David Mallett, Eric Bogle & Archie Fisher). This is truly lovely stuff, and heartily recommended to anyone for those times by the fireplace on a Sunday winter's morning, cup of coffee in hand.

5 out of 5 stars A Folk Album You Should Own.......2003-07-17

Bok, Muir & Trickett is a continuation of Peter, Paul & Mary. They sang in close harmony and their songs are real folk classics. If you like the folk-style of Peter, Paul & Mary, you will surely like this folk group.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD.......1999-09-13

Bok, Muir, and Trickett are a great group, and this is a great compilation. The final trawl and the Ways of Man are amazing, and the others are all great too. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars GLORIOUS MUSIC!!!.......1998-09-15

Since I first heard this group on A Prairie Home Companion many years ago I was hooked. This CD has no bad tracks. Every song is a jewel and I never get tired of listening to it. The voices of this trio blend so beautifully together. Gordon Bok has a voice that is so perfect. It is hard to decide which is better - him alone or with Muir and Trickett. I recommend this CD to everybody, young or old.

I received Bok, Muir & Trickett: The First Fifteen Years I & II as a wedding present 14 years ago. I believe these disks have provided me with more enjoyment than any other present I received. I have an extensive music collection with thousands of albums and CDs, and this set would be among my top twenty. It would be at the top of my list for folk music.

Bok, Muir and Trickett sing a mix of American (New England), British, Canadian and Australian folk songs. The voices of the singers are distinct and complement each other well. Instrumental accompaniment is generally simple and straightforward, tasteful and sufficient. For me, this is what folk music is all about. These songs have settled deep into me.

4 out of 5 stars Harmony Perfected Within a Strong Folk Triad.......2005-02-21

There is some history to my purchase and subsequent review of "Bok, Muir & Trickett: The First Fifteen Years, Vol. II". Many years ago, when I was still a child, my mother received from my aunt an audio cassette tape simply labeled "Minneapolis Concert". Thereafter, during long rides in the car and "cleaning day" at home, my mother put on this mystery tape: a beautiful, mesmerizing collection of folk and traditional songs and ballads, often unaccompanied by instrumentation of any sort; while others rounded out perfectly to guitar or (what we guessed to be) the autoharp.

Years passed, and my times spent at home listening to that mystery tape with my mother and brother were greatly forgotten. However, a resurgence of interest in the folk-rock music that so greatly shaped my early musical tastes caused me to remember my mother's old albums. Among those, of course, was that haunting mystery tape. A diligent search online finally revealed who those nameless, shapeless voices truly were: Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir, and Ed Trickett. Apparently great names of folk music in their heyday in the '70s, the three left individual careers to occasionally join forces as an astounding triad of harmony and melody. Bass and tenor met an earthy, throaty songbird and crafted unforgettable folk and reworked traditional ballads for a new and hungry audience: sixteen of those favorites are gathered on this second compilation volume as released by Folk-Legacy Records. Included are many of the gems I personally remember from my childhood, such as "The Gin and Raspberry", "Melora's Song", "Waltzing With Bears", and "The Rolling of the Stones".

I know my mom and my aunt will be thrilled that I finally found out who their favorite mysetery folk performers are! Yet even those unacquainted with Bok, Muir, and Trickett are sure to enjoy this compilation album--anyone who has any interest in American Folk Rock or traditional/folk music in general should take a pass at this trio. The vocals are amazing, and the instrumentation clear and strong. If you're fortunate enough to obtain a copy, you'll be in for a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars Flyin' songs.......2003-10-26

I searched for such a group for years ! I listened for a long time Peter Paul&Mary albums but I'd never found a group that can hold on the incredible harmony they lost after separation.
Now I've found it!!!! They're wonderful in harmony and seems to recreate that mixture of guitar picking and voice.
Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible harmony!.......1999-03-09

I second the emotion of the first reviewer. Bok, Muir & Trickett are incredible. Their harmony is sweet and clear. If you've never heard "Waltzing with Bears" it's the silliest, most delightful song around. Aragon Mill never sounded better. Get every single album of theirs that you can!

Political while still beautiful and emotional. The only bad thing that could be said is that several of the songs are too similar and it gets monotonous in the middle. However, it's full of anthems (Petroleum Distillation, End of the century) and there's even a funk-style song (Sweet Distraction).

Mary Rodgers is usually heralded as musical theater's sole woman composer, but this new recording of a long-lost gem introduces us to another brilliant member of Broadway's thin female ranks: Kay Swift. Collaborating with her husband, lyricist James Paul Warburg (writing as Paul James), Swift penned a splendid collection of tunes-in turn touching, daffy, percolating and tender-for this 1930 show. Taking place in the unlikely setting of a tool-and-die factory, Fine and Dandy is a bubbly jazz age musical full of melodic invention and lyrical twists. Fans of the Gershwins' 1920s oeuvre will adore this world-premiere recording, and in fact George is namechecked in the wonderful title track, in which Carolee Carmello and Mario Cantone compete in spirited one-upmanship. The CD also includes four songs written by Swift between 1929 and 1950; like Plain and Fancy, they serve to remind us that Swift was one of Broadway's unsung heroes. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Description

The classic 1930 musical comedy in its world premiere recording, featuring a 28-piece orchestra and a cast of Broadway and jazz greats. With a new biography of the composer, entitled Fine and Dandy: The Life and Work of Kay Swift, due out June 1 from Yale University Press, this new recording is sure to attract the attention of Broadway and jazz music-lovers everywhere. 5 out of 5 stars Dandy.......2005-05-06

No one will easily mistake Kay Swift for Gershwin, but it is great that she is finally getting some recognition beyond "Can't We Be Friends?" (included here on this LP as a sort of bonus) which isn't itself all that familiar except to cabaret aficionados. Writing true show music is a different kettle of fish, an art form with different skills, and listening to this LP one begins to construct a live production of FINE AND DANDY in one's head. The voices of the individual performers are immensely helpful in this journey, and some of the tracks you could listen to day and night. I understand that Donald Ogden Stewart wrote the book for this show and I would love to get my hands on it, having enjoyed some of the films he worked on so much, Dinner at Eight, Holiday, Kitty Foyle, The Philadelphia Story and Europa 51 among them. His Socialist bent had an appealing, whimsical side to it and I can see the factory for which Kay Swift wrote her enchanting opening number as the perfect laboratory for Ogden Stewart's brand of inspired nuttiness. Gavin Creel and Carolee Carmello are vivacious and even infectious on their tracks, and it sounds as though they love the songs as much as we love them. "Can This Be Love?" already sounds like a standard, and I predict many renditions of the comical complaint number "Let's Go Eat Worms."

Don't know if a revival of the show would be successful, but it sounds as though it needs one bravura comedian to put it over big. Back in the 1930s they had Joe Cook. Who is Joe Cook's equivalent today? Someone like Will Ferrell I guess--gulp.

5 out of 5 stars WOW Simply the best reconstructed show album to date!!.......2005-02-23

Fine and Dandy is simply the best 30s musical to be reconstructed for CD yet, and it was a complete surprise because who knew any of the songs from this show? Well, we know them now and they are teriffic, and performed by an equally teriffic cast, especially Carolee Carmello, Gavin Cleel and Jennifer Laura Thompson. Would it be fair to say that Ms. Carmello is wildly underappreciated? I have adored her ever since seeing her as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors many years ago in Boston. Here she is wonderful especially in Lets Go Eat Worms in the Garden and Nobody Breaks My Heart. It was so unexpected to find such a treasure trove of foot tapping songs, but here they are. BUY THIS CD if you like musicals at all, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars More than Fine, and More than Dandy!.......2004-09-18

I am very selective in writing reviews for Amazon - so if you're reading this, then please know that I must really, really love this c.d. And I hope my "review" helps in your decision whether or not to buy it!
Having said that...this recording is tremendous. Kay Swift's music comes to life through the talented and spectacular voices, most notebly of Gavin Creel and Carolee Carmello. I think I listen to their duet (Track 10), at least once a day. The whole thing is just pure broadway fun, the way it used to be! The only bad thing about this c.d. is that you wished they had staged this musical, so that you could go see it live!

5 out of 5 stars Not To Be Missed.......2004-05-31

Kay Swift, best-known for her close association with George Gershwin, was one of the few female composers to write for Broadway. Fine and Dandy was her first book musical, featuring lyrics by husband Paul James, and became one of the biggest hits of Broadway's 1930-31 season. However, like many musicals of the era, most of the original performance materials were lost over the years. In the mid-`80s, Swift began to reconstruct the score, assisted by orchestrator Russell Warner, who continued the work following her death in 1993. The new recording is a revelation, for the songs are, as the title says, fine and dandy--clever and romantic by turns, and always tuneful. Those who love Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" and "Of Thee I Sing" will find a similar feel here, helped by strong performances from Carolee Carmello, Gavin Creel, Mario Cantone, Mark Linn-Baker and Jennifer Laura Thompson, bolstered by a full orchestra. The CD also includes several other songs by Swift, including the classic "Can't We Be Friends?"

    5 out of 5 stars fabulous discovery!.......2004-05-29

This is an amazing score: witty, clever, fantastically inventive music -- fans of Gershwin et al will be delighted to discover this delightful show. What a great contribution to the American songbook. And hats off to PS Classics for this debut nonprofit historical recording, which has impeccable production quality. Can't wait for the next one they release.

5 out of 5 stars If you have never heard of Jeff Ott or FIFTEEN.......2000-09-15

you are missing out. Jeff has seen it all, been through it all and tells it the way it is. FIFTEEN has opened my eyes to many issues and problems in the world today and has changed the way I view the world and myself. The lyrics have definitely impacted my life on many different levels. SURPRISE!(and everything else by Jeff) is outstanding.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2000-07-28

I love this album. It is one of the best records I have heard in a long time. Sure, jeff may be a bit preachy, but most of the time he is right one the money. song 14 is a good acoustic tune and My Friend II is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. this record is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars don't even have the cd, but from the samples..........1999-09-28

I'd say this album was pretty good just from the samples. One of my friends has lucky, but in my opinion it only has a few good ones. This sounds pretty good. Now if I only had money....... :)

5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for fans, and a good place to start for others........1999-04-09

This album covers all the bases of Fifteen. The opening number is an angry anti-war punk anthem. The next is a beautiful(but a bit long) tribute to all the time they spent on the road. There's also Hendrix-style rock "Ain't Life a Drag", love songs "All the Good Times" and even a Hendrix cover "Hey Joe". The album ends with a touching audio zine about a homeless punk girl who died of a heroin overdose, and a haunting unlisted acoustic track that serves as a tribute to all the band's friends who have died.

It's cheap, has great songs, is longer than an hour, and you'll learn from it too. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy, weak, and incomplete.......2002-04-13

I bought this CD for accompaniment music to be used when my son sings at a wedding. Unlike most accompaniment tapes that can be played to back up songs, this music has NO WORDS (lyrics) printed anywhere so you don't know where you are with the tunes - you have to buy another CD that has them included! (You have to buy TWO CDs to know where the words and phrases are.) Also, there isn't a choice of high, medium, or low voice accompaniment (though there is a lot of space on the CD) and the tunes sound pretty synthetic/pathetic.

It was MY fault for buying this CD and trusting that it was like the very satisfactory tapes we buy.

If you want schmaltz background - go buy muzak. I'm giving this CD to a senior's home...maybe they can stomach it.

3 out of 5 stars nice if you just want music for the background of a receptio.......2001-05-08

This is a nice cd for music only..no words. It makes a nice background for a romantic reception.
