4 out of 5 stars I bought this cd for my wife and she LOVES it!.......2007-01-05

this is a great cd, my wife loves it! especially her two hits "Treat me like a chevy" and "Do it".. You really should purchase this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Decent.......2007-01-03

I was actually surprised at how good this CD was. The song, "Do it to it," was okay for a party track, but there are quite a few decent slow jams also. I still listen to the CD periodically and it was well worth my money.

1 out of 5 stars This Just Sucks.......2007-01-01

I thought this album was going to be so great, but after listening to it their vocals are weak, the songs are shabby, and I want my money back for this album. There are no real girl groups out because it's hard to follow the legacy of those before, and this abomination is exactly why. They are unappreciated for a reason and will remain so if they don't come better than this. Try again girls!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Cherish, So How Many People Are in the Group? (3.5 Stars).......2006-12-26

Sorry, I had to ask that. Other reviews mentioned it so why can I? Really, how many singers ARE there in Cherish. Although the vocals on the CD are decent and there are indeed four girls on the cover, why does it seem like there's only one person singing? Or is this a complication of the four girls? Anyway, just like 95% of people who got this album, I heard of it upon listening to the two songs "Do It To it" and "Unappreciated". You know you want me to say "Do It To It" lead me to this album, but guess what, "Unappreciated" lead me to this album. Personally, I thought "Do It To It" was a cookie-cutter snap-rap song that could've been done better by Danity Kane, or for a male group, Dem Franchize Boyz (ok maybe not).

So, when I got this album, I expected a ton of crappy dance songs and a few placings of excellent R&B songs. I have ot say, that is somewhat correct. Yes, there are plenty of good R&B songs on this CD that make it well worth the purchase, but there are a few good choice club songs (no, not "Do It To It"). Overall, this is really not a bad album. There are a few sprinkled in rushed songs or songs that are completely wack, but the good outbalances the bad. Cherish have (or more like has) good vocals, and productions by Jazze Pha and Don Vito add to that. For example, "That Boi" has a catchy beat and is really enjoyable. Jazze Pha proves once again he can produce a fun R&R (rhythm and rap) beat simply. Cherish does sound good on the track as well. Lyrics do flatter a bit and the mispelling of boi is annoying, but it is a great song that you can jam to.

To showecase some vocals, look up "Unappreciated", a snap-shot of today's more ballad R&B. Cherish proves that they can indeed sing, and do have good voices. Also, the writing pays off in this track ("Lately it ain't been the same at all/When you're here it's like I'm invisible/I still can't seem to see where I went wrong"). "Ooh" is sweet, sensual, smooth, and slightly sexy R&B song, even slower than "Unappreciated". Although not as vocally strong as "Unappreciated", it does have a good vibe to it and the girls pull this one off grand. The group's third single, "Show and Tell", is similar to "Oooh", but a bit more hard hitting and more put together, which reminds me a bit of Ciara's "Promise". It is catchiness at best and one of the album's best tracks, even though the lyrics are cheap. For a good party song, "Chick Like Me" is a bump-in-the-truck hip-hop song that lacks creative writing but has a catchy and well designed production that will likely be a radio single. But for the best song on the album, "Whenever" is a killer song and an album favorite. The production while simple is soft and piano heavy and the girls vocals preform best here. "Moment in Time" is a soft-ballad, while not fantastic, showcases the group's vocals in near acapella.

While there are some good moments on here, there are a couple bombs. "Chevy" is pretty lame, the production could not turn anyone on and the lyrics are laughable (taste my paint?). Also the vocals seem to be too unbalanced and the members don't harmonize, but even Destiny's Child couldn't make this sound good. "Taken" is generic pop-n-B that doesn't really go any further than decent voices, while "Stop Calling Me" is too cheesy and sounds like the production was taken from Ciara's "Thug Style". "Fool 4 You" has potential, I just think it needs a bit of polishing. The production has a cool 90s vibe to it but it seems a bit rushed. Also vocals here aren't even close to the best on the disc.

Overall, not a bad album, actually quite a shocker. Although not an excellent or even stellar album, it is a good album worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of the first two singles. For a lot of lyrics screw-ups I have to take off a star, and take off another half for occassional bad produced songs, but otherwise a mostly solid disc of today's R&B and hip-hop. 3.5 stars.

Fire up the nostalgia machine for the soundtrack to Cherish, an album filled with the type of gooey, fuzzy songs populating light rock stations now, but high school slow dances in the past. 10CC's "I'm Not in Love" sighs like a seashore, all gauzy synths and primitive computerized harmonies, while the title cut by the Association rings with soft bells and summery, melodic mellowness. Daryl Hall and John Oates's mega-'80s-sounding hit "Private Eyes" is a guilty, sing-along pleasure, and the Impressions' "Get Up and Move" jives with big horns and soul. New wave synth chic even checks in, with the Human League's droll "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" and Modern English's romantic "I Melt with You." The only newer tracks are courtesy of Noe Venable--and even then, "Breakdown" is her fragile, haunting cover of the Tom Petty song. The mix on Cherish is definitely low-key, if a little heavy on sappiness. Yet its diversity, charmingly, works well. While certainly jumping decades with impunity, Cherish's high quality hits mesh nicely--creating a sweet, fluffy compilation CD of love songs covering all shapes and styles. --Annie Zaleski

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Movie, underrated Soundtrack.......2006-12-17

A soundtrack album might contain a lot of good songs, but ultimately the soundtrack is going to be judged on how well it captures the essence of the movie. This is indeed the case with the soundtrack to the film, "Cherish" - an independent film that virtually went unnoticed in 2002. "Cherish" is one of those films I happened to stumble on - and it proved to be one of the most entertaining films I had seen in some time. After watching the movie, I realized that this was one of the most entertaining movies I had seen in some time. One thing that contributed to this movie being entertaining was the outstanding soundtrack that was assembled. "Cherish" has a soundtrack that consists of a mix of pop favorites, one-hit wonders, and some modern day flavor.

To appreciate the soundtrack, one must understand the movie's plot. Zoe Adler (played by Robin Tunney) is someone who is basically socially inept and somewhat of an introvert. Zoe struggles with her lack of social skills both in the office and in the social scene as well. She is also romanticist who loves 1970s and 1980s music and gets immersed in the songs of that era. Unknown to Zoe, she is being pursued and followed by a stalker (played by Brad Hunt) Zoe's life will change when the stalker finds Zoe going to her car to pick up her cell phone. The stalker takes Zoe hostage and forces her to drive - running down a police officer Following the incident, the stalker leaves the scene and Zoe is left facing a homicide charge. While awaiting her trial, her lawyer arranges for Zoe to be put in the "Bracelet Program". This is a program that essentially places Zoe under house arrest and uses a bracelet to electronically track that Zoe stays indeed under house arrest. The movie focuses on Zoe's attempts to deal with her house arrest while attempting to prove her innocence. At the same time, there is focus on Zoe's relationship with the police officer Bill Daly from the bracelet program (played by Tim Blake Nelson), who also suffers from social ineptness.

Much of the credit for assembling the soundtrack has to go to Paul Broucek, who was in charge of music for this film. Much of the theme of the movie deals with obsessions - and many of the songs reflect this theme. The theme of music is very nicely woven into Zoe's character as well (she is a big music fan). There are fourteen tracks on the collection, unfortunately they are not ordered as in the movie:

"She's Gone" by Daryl Hall and John Oates
"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell
"Breakdown" by Noe Venable
"I Melt With You" by Modern English
"Private Eyes" by Modern English
"I'm Not in Love" by 10CC
"Cherish" by The Association
"Happy Together" by The Turtles
"(Keep Feeling) Fascination"
"Down Easy" by Noe Venable Trio
"Alone Remix" by Mark De Gli Antoni
"Get Up an Move" by The Impressions
"While I'm Alone" by Maze (Featuring Frankie Beverly)
"I Love You" by Climax Blues Band

Some of the classic songs on here are really going to grip you. When "Tainted Love" is played during the homicide and later in the movie, it gave me a whole new perspective on that song. Before this movie, "Tainted Love" was just another overplayed song by a one-hit wonder (Soft Cell). After hearing it in the movie, it gives a much more haunting feel when listening to it, resulting in a whole new appreciation for a song that I never cared for in the past.

The Hall and Oates tunes are well positioned in the movie too. "She's Gone" is played when the stalker realizes he can no longer find Zoe (who is under house arrest). "Private Eyes" is played when Zoe calls her own cell phone and the stalker realizes it is Zoe, so he plays that song to indicate "Private Eyes - they're watching you". Again, these are old songs, but given a whole new appreciation when put into the context of this film.

Perhaps the best use of music is saved for the end. Climax Blues Band's "I Love You" is beautifully woven into the movie's final scene. In that final scene, we find Zoe and Daly reflecting on the relationship that they had established. This is a very gripping and powerful song to begin with, but when put into the finale of the movie, it is that much stronger.

Like many soundtracks, "Cherish" does not include every song or piece of music that is in the movie. In particular there are some glaring omissions such as Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun", Human League's "Don't You Want Me?" (although another Human League song, "Fascination" is included on the soundtrack), and America's "Sister Golden Hair". Other notable omissions include Togetherness' "I Bet You Never Knew That I Followed You", the Style Council's "You're the Best Thing", and the Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes for You". These songs would have been nice to be on the soundtrack - and all of them fit nicely into the theme of the movie.

One other omission revolves around "Breakdown". In the movie, the classic Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song is included (and woven very nicely into a scene where the Stalker has a "melt down"). However on the soundtrack a cover is included by local San Francisco music star, Noe Venable. Venable's music has a small role in the movie and Venable also has another song included on the soundtrack ("Down Easy"). Venable puts a haunting, folksy spin on "Breakdown".

One final note, Mark De Gli Antoni provides much of the instrumental score of this film and I wish that more was included on the soundtrack. Still, this is a very good collection of music. Not only do I recommend the movie, but I also recommend this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Cherish as in Chershing the memories..........2004-04-05

The movie was excellent and I found the soundtrack is one of those soundtracks that is hard and rare to find. 80"s were my teenage years and brought back alot of wonderful memories. They just don't make excellent music like that anymore. ANything that brings back excellent memories of my ex-husband is always an extra plus.

5 out of 5 stars A journey through the 80's music.......2002-06-27

Either if you have seen this very enjoyable movie or not, if you like the 80's, you will love this soundtrack. It's a great collection of hits from those days.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy At His Best..........2007-01-18

This is one of David Cassidy"s finest albulms...
With the great song writers of that time including Adam Miller his voice is challenged and he replies with some beautiful songs and hitting high notes perfectly. When you listen to him sing these songs on this albulm you realise the great voice he had and why he became the big star...This guy can really sing and had the perfect ingredient of that time with the most prolific song writers I believe of the century.
David Cassidy is an actor and singer and sings these songs with the feeling and emotions they deserve...These songs were made for him on this albulm and I doubt any other performer would be able to deliver these songs in the way he does with the same feeling and emotion..A trademark Cassidy albulm with beautiful songs of a special era...All the songs are beautiful with his star quality that made him a superstar..I especially love BLIND HOPE....Adam Miller...Listen to how beautiful David sings this song with so much emotion and feeling...The whole albulm is truly beautiful...One of his first and best and must for Cassidy fans.
Garry Roonan.

4 out of 5 stars Probably a rush job in the studio, theres much to enjoy here.......2005-04-23

David Cassidy doesn't write much about this record in his auto-biography, probably because it was a Patridge Family album in all but name. Some tunes are a little more personal("I Am a Clown", "Blind Hope")and Cassidy gets his own song("Ricky's Tune"), yet there's not much of his personality in evidence--however, there's a whole lotta Keith Patridge here and for PF fans it's a great trade-off. Who but a '70's cynic could resist these tender bubblegum odes? It looks and seems harmless enough, but Cassidy's handlers knew what they were doing: several tracks are teenybopper bliss, heartache touchstones.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy's First Solo Project: A Partridge Extension.......2005-03-08

David Cassidy's "Cherish" LP was a huge break out solo attempt by the artist best known for his portrayal of Keith Partridge, the perennial teenage eldest son on the hugely popular "Partridge Family" series on ABC. David's continous urge to expand his audience to a rock status gave birth to this first solo project. Yet, as it is told, he was still under strict restrains at the time by producer Wes Farrell who also produced the Partridge's musical numbers. It was said that Farrell made Cassidy follow guide lines to not overstep the purity of his Partridge status much to Cassidy's dismay but Cassidy was so enthusiastic to break the mold he gave in. Thus his first foray into a solo career sounds very similar to his Partridge tunes that Arista included many of his tunes on the Partridge compilations and it is difficult fora novice Partridge fan to really hear any difference and any of these tunes could have easily transcended over into the TV Show which was Farrell's intention. Please do not think I am easily dismissing this project however. The tunes here are beautifully produced and executed and showcase Cassidy's breathy vocals successfully. Among the bouncey Partridge-esque tunes are "Being Together", "I Just Wanna Make You Happy"(strangely reminiscent of the gypsy-like quality of Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" for some reason), and "We Could Never Be Friends (Cause We've Been Lovers Too Long". All are fun loving and peppy tunes but I think the standout ballads are what deliver this album such as the single release of "Could It Be Forever" and the hauntingly depressing "My First Night Alone Without You" which is in my humble opinion a great standout song beautifully rendered here in Cassidy's undeniable earnest vocal. I know many may not agree, but I feel Cassidy's single "Cherish" far outdoes the Association's original. Excellent David Cassidy rendition! Also included in the ballad department are "Where Is The Morning" but greater still are the morose but beautiful "I Am A Clown" and the extremely underrated self-penned "Ricky's Tune" but a definate fan favorite and would have been a surefire hit if released as a single instead of the flip side of "How Can I Be Sure". Cassidy's first venture into a solo career is well worth a listen and is economically priced for the serious collector as well as newcomers to the Partridge/Cassidy fold!

4 out of 5 stars Someone should sing these on American Idol!!.......2005-03-04

Look, I'm a guy and I think David Cassidy is COOL! I know, I know. I can't stand "today's" music. Can you? If anyone on American Idol sang these songs, they would win regardless of how talented they are.

Blind Hope, Could it Be Forever, I Lost My Chance are great songs.

5 out of 5 stars David, We Cherish Your Earlier Work!.......2003-04-25

When I was growing up in the early 70's, my older sister played David Cassidy and Partridge Family albums non-stop until she grew too old for them and I either took them from her room or bought second copies for myself...Who knew that Buddha would re-release the soundtrack of my childhood complete with the gorgeous pictures of David by Henry Diltz frolicking in the mountains with his manager's horse in his red velvet jeans, huge-lapelled zipper-pull sweaters and fabulous shaggy locks? If only David had peaked in the heyday of video, his gorgeous looks married with that breathy, overtly sexual voice would have catapulted him even further into mass hysteria, although I doubt that is possible. For all the holier-than-thou elitest music critics, get off your pedastal; David can sing with the best of them(as proven by his success 30 years later). This album has a mood; a sexy, sad set of ballads paired with just a few jazzier numbers like ("We Could Never Be Friends Because We've Been Lovers Too Long", and "I Just Wanna Make You Happy") that give you an achingly romantic feel for the David of the 70's. I've seen him live recently and he's awesome, but there is something to the teeny-bopper-packaged David of the 70's (lonely, shy and so beautiful) that does justice to this first solo effort. On "Could It Be Forever," and "Blind Hope," I never tire of hearing David husky croonings. This album is chock-full of Wes Farrell tunes and songs by my favorite PF tunesmith, Tony Romeo, that seem to be custom-made for this achingly beautiful man. The album's tracks flow nicely(with the exception of the original, unedited version of I Am A Clown) and even "Ricky's Tune" in its orginal format is infinitely better than David's re-release on 2002's CD "Then & Now" in which he alters the words. I am suspicious about this tune being about David's dog (named Sam but renamed Ricky??) but it is vintage David Cassidy. The best part of this album is hearing that lush sexy voice singing about love and loss and sadness and seeing the CD booklet of some never-before-released Henry Diltz photos (in addition to the original album back cover photos). Recently, Buddha announced the re-release of several other PF and DC studio albms including Shopping Bag, Crossword Puzzle and Rock Me Baby, David's second solo album. I don't think that Rock Me Baby captures the innocence of a 21-year old David like "Cherish" does. This album should be dusted off and savored; David, you make us all so happy!

The all-female Irish-American ensemble, on their second release for the Rounder label, have fashioned an uncluttered, forward-looking yet tradition-based and unabashedly sentimental set. Recorded between Scotland, where producer Phil Cunningham resides, and the United States, with guest stints from Irish accordionist Sharon Shannon, British folk star Kate Rusby and Karen Matheson of the Scottish supergroup Capercaille, this may well be their personal best to date. Bandleader Joanie Madden's dulcet tone and precise yet lyrical phrasing on various flutes and whistles remain world-class and are clearly still evolving; very few players can remotely approach her degree of virtuosity. Sweet Thames Flow Softly, one of Ewan MacColl's most wistful love songs, is given an especially lovely interpretation. Fronted by lead singer Heidi Talbot's bittersweet vocal, it is youth-recollected-from-age personified. Of course, as so much Irish music is meant for dancing, there are several medleys of lively jigs and reels, performed with the unflagging rhythmic brio and melodic dispatch CTL fans have come to expect. And any crusty misogynist laboring under the delusion that no gathering of ladies could ever rock HIS house is in for an abrupt change of life! --Christina Roden

Album Description

Cherish the Ladies is one of the finest ensembles of Celtic musicians on either side of the Atlantic. The American-based group, winner of the Glasgow Celtic Connections Festival's "International Group of the Year" award, recorded Woman of the House in Scotland with many of their talented friends from the festival including Kate Rusby, Sharon Shannon, Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, Liz Kane and Laoise Kelly. The resulting combination of reels, jigs and heart-rending ballads is a glorious celebration of a thriving musical tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-11-12

This is a wonderful collection of new Celtic music. It is not a beer-chugging sing-along, but rather a refreshing assortment of reels, jigs and ballads sung by the beautiful voices of these Ladies...I do cherish them!

5 out of 5 stars Calms the Dogs.......2006-02-02

This is NOT a bad review! CTL's beautiful vocals and instrumentation/arrangements soothe the savage beast(s). My 2 dogs, Henry (boxer/whippet mix) and Sophie (shepherd/huskie combo platter) come in from the other room to listen when I put this on. They settle right down and don't bother me when I have this on at home when I am working or when it's "quiet time" at night. The pitch must be just right to them to make them so relaxed. Celtic Twilight 3: "Lullabies" has a similar effect. Thanks, CTL!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ladies do not dissappoint.......2006-02-01

I have bought every Cherish album I have come across. This one is especially good. The selection of tracks, the voices, and music is wonderful. I will cherish this album.

5 out of 5 stars They never fail to impress..........2005-12-06

Once again, Cherish the Ladies has come out with a beautiful and incredibly well-made album. They are one of the most consistent Celtic groups on that front: each album they've made is equally as satisfying as the last. Beautiful harmonies, fiery fiddling and rock-solid rhythm make these ladies stand out among the crowd.

This is a perfect gift for fans of Celtic or Folk music, or women's music in general. Slainte!

Cherish the Ladies are primarily known for their instrumental skills--nearly every member is a contest-winning musician--so it might come as a bit of a surprise that on The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone, 10 of the 13 tracks are songs. But the assured way with which the band delivers its sweet harmonies on the opening track ("The Broom of Cowdenknowes") proves the Ladies can sing as well as they can play their fiddles, flutes, and accordions. They've invited a host of guest artists to perform with them, including folk singers Luka Bloom, Tom Chapin, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger; instrumentalists fiddler Brendan Mulvihill, banjo picker Eric Weisberg, and Chieftains member and flautist Matt Molloy; and the legendary Irish balladeers the Clancy Brothers. In a particularly moving gesture, the six band members pay tribute to their families by playing a lovely version of "The Queen of Connemara" accompanied by their fathers and brothers. The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone is a departure from Cherish the Ladies' previous dance-tune-based recordings, but the quality of the singing is so good that you don't miss the jigs and reels. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars couldn't be without.......2007-01-04

This is my second time I purchased this particular cd. I lost the first one and couldn't be without it. I just love these gals and this cd also has others on it that are super. great music.

5 out of 5 stars Cherish The Ladies.....Everyone should cherish their lovely Celtic Music!.......2006-06-27

I absolutely love this album! I purchased my first copy about 2 years ago and played it over and over again because I love so many of the tunes and learned a few songs for the Irish Feis' and the Fleadh Ceol. I played this CD so much, I think I wore it out...so I recently purchased another copy in June, 2006. I love Deidre Connolly's voice (especially on Erin Gra Mo Chroi---Ireland Love Of My Heart)....just brilliant! Joanie Madden continues to amaze with her tin whistles....the music she creates is spectacular! All of the gals in Cherish The Ladies are incredible musicians...keep up the great music!

5 out of 5 stars Make a date with the ladies!.......2006-05-05

A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Joanie Madden at the Savannah Irish festival. I'm sorry to say that it was my first time hearing her play, and while I'd heard of Cherish the Ladies, I wasn't familiar with any of their music. Hearing her live was my impetus for getting one of their CDs and I'm so glad I did.

This CD is a lovely collaborative effort with the Ladies and their friends, and it's entertaining and crisp from start to finish. From sentimental love songs like Bonny Blue-Eyed Nancy, to the tongue in cheek wit of The Mad Puck Goat, it's one of those experiences you have when you just feel lucky to be along for the ride. And hats off to their rendition of Down by the Glenside with Paddy Reilly. He really is one of the best ballad singers out there and he's a treat on this cut.

The Ladies are great. Don't miss them.

4 out of 5 stars A few too many guest singers.......2004-06-09

I think there should have been more focus on the band, rather than guest performers. In general, I didn't like the guest singing performances, despite how famous the guys may be. The instrumental tracks are stellar, with all-star guests such as Liam O'Flynn and Matt Molloy. "Broom of the Cowdenknowes" is my favorite track. Great song, great vocals. "Erin Grá Mo Chroí" is a beautiful song very well-sung (the Dervish version on Midsummer's Night is also highly recommended). "Queen of Connemara" and "Jolly Beggarman" are other good songs. I didn't really like the arrangement of "An Poc Ar Buile", although it is still a good song. The other songs just didn't do it for me. But still definitely worth buying for any trad fan.

5 out of 5 stars Compulsively listenable.......2003-10-01

I bought this Cd without ever having listened to a single note of the band's work. I had read a review in Sound and Vision, then the views here at Amazon, and I took a chance. I was not disappointed. Every song here is an absolute gem. The harmonies are magical, and the instrumentation will transport you. I play this disk again and again, and I think my wife is going to hide the CD if I play it at dinnertime once more. I promise you will not be disappointed. Buy this disk, and simply enjoy; it's magic, gorgeous, and worth any price.

4 out of 5 stars Daughters of NY Firefighters!.......2007-05-31

These ladies reflect their upbringing by singing classic Irish tunes in a fun and easy listening way. We "discovered" them about the time we discovered Lorie Line, in a very small California county called Humboldt. That was ten years ago and we are still loyal fans! Brava, ladies!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voices.......2007-01-11

Bought this CD for my wife who is a big fan of traditional Irish music. I love the beautiful voices. The voice & instruments mix are very clear; one is not over powering the other.

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic Gem!.......2005-05-01

This is one that I play over and over for the lilt of the fiddles and flute and the stunning vocals. Great traditional Celtic music performed as originally intended. Makes you want to dance. You can't resist singing along with the ones you know.
I've seen this group perform at the Winfield Festival which was a real treat. I whole-heartedly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Aoife Clancy's voice is heaven.......2002-12-25

The Song's "Green Grow The Rushes Oh" and "Broken Wings" alone would make this collection of music worth the price. Toss in the other great vocals and instrumentals and you have one of the best collection of traditional Irish music available today.

Aoife Clancy's vocals were the heart of Cherish The Ladies music for several years and this collection includes many of her best.

Buy it and you'll never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Like It? Get the History!.......2005-09-07

Well, for anyone who doesn't know...

This is of course a classic track and one of Madonna's best. One of its charms is that it is inspired by an older '60s tune by The Association, also called "Cherish." Madonna uses some of the words and the same notes from that song ("Cherish is the word I use to describe....", which was the key phrase from that '60s tune). But Madonna doesn't rip the Association off, rather she builds her own distinctive tune, but one clearly inspired by, and meant to be connected with, the earlier song by the Association. For people who really love this Madonna tune and want to appreciate it from a new perspective, pick up the Association's "Cherish" and compare the two. You will get a new appreciation of the genius of Madonna, one of the top two or three pop songwriters of the second half of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Who Doesn't Love This Song?.......2005-07-05

This song is one of Madonna's best songs, she is and always will be the QUEEN OF POP. As usual, she wrote and co-produced it. This song makes me think of my boyfriend.

5 out of 5 stars I do cherish this song..........2005-02-26

I love the song cherish as well as Supernatural, but I wish Supernatural was included in her Like A Prayer album.

5 out of 5 stars A Cd To Cherish.......2004-11-02

This song is a classics 80's Tune by Madonna. It is has a very typical Madonna sound to it.

1. Cherish (Extended Version): A pretty decent remix of this classic tune, not much differnt from the orginal just longer.

2. Cherish (7"Mix/Edit): The radio version, that appeared on The Immacualte Collection.

3. Supernatural: An unreleased B-Side. This song is truly wonderful. This ranks as one of Madonna's best B-sides. The cd is worth the money for this song.

4 out of 5 stars Supernatural.......2004-01-02

I remember when this single came out, and I paid less for what they are asking at amazon.com...I bought it for the unrelease song SUPERNATURAL. . .The song is diffrent and sppoky and I like it because it made Madonna that she can do anything. It is a shame that there are only 3 track on the CD1- Cherish extended version 2- Cherish 7'' 3-supernatural which you can probably find else where for less than 5 dollar. The cassette only have 2 track 1-cherish 2- supernaturalalso you can find it for less I have both it is rediculious to have it on here as an import and for the price there are asking ...you can also find a remix of supernatural on the RED HOT DANCE CD for AIDS the remix is spooky with a touch of club dance beat...I suggest that you search for the cd with a resonable price before paying the $12.99 for it....I wish Madonna would release a CD with all her un release song cause some of her unrelease are actually good and it could of been hit. for example Your Honesty which was on remixes & revisit. . . .I don't mean to hurt amazon.com for the price they are charging for the CD of cherish and supernatural but i believe it is out rage ... sorry

Irish music is particularly rich in songs relating to the celebration of Christmas. Cherish The Ladies, an all-female band made up of Irish-born and first generation Irish-American performers, has mined the purest gold for this delightful set. The 10 tracks are given sensitive yet robust acoustic treatments by a consort of top-notch players. Bandleader Joanie Madden's mastery of tin whistle, low whistle and flute has taken her all over the globe and onto dozens of albums. Lead singer Heidi Talbot's husky-sweet tone is further graced by refreshingly uncluttered phrasing. Mary Coogan's intricate plucked strings, Mirella Murray's lively yet mellow squeezebox, Donna Long's Cape-Breton-inflected piano and Marie Reilly¹s propulsive fiddle are all remarkable but each nonetheless meshes into a tightly arranged, flawless whole. The program evokes nostalgia for joyous childhood holidays long past but also reflects the wistful prayer for peace that a modern celebrant might offer up in difficult times. --Christina Roden

Album Description

The critically acclaimed women's ensemble Cherish the Ladies extends its theme of traditional Irish music to the holidays. On Christmas Night features traditional Irish melodies and carols like "The Holly and the Berry" and "The Wexford Carol" interspersed with well-known Christmas carols, including "O Come All Ye Faithful," "What Child Is This," "The Little Drummer Boy," "We Three Kings," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Silent Night," and "The First Noel." All of the arrangements are brought forth with a new freshness by the use of the group's unique Celtic instrumentation (penny whistles, fiddles, accordion, concertina, piano, guitar, mandolin, banjo, flutes) and beautiful harmonies, and then heightened by the inclusion of world-class Irish stepdancing.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Carols injected by the Celts.......2007-01-10

I played this cd all through the month of December and really enjoyed it. I never tired of it. I saw this cd advertised in a magazine. The review of it caught my attention, so I checked it out on Amazon. I purchased three, one for me and gave the other two as gifts. The music is lively and soft when it needs to be. On Christmas Night gives a new sound and tempo to the old carols. It also reminds me of the music of colonial America.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in Ireland.......2005-12-10

I first became aware of Cherish the Ladies when Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops released a collection of Celtic music which features the group as guest soloists. I later saw a slide show of images of Ireland set to their music. It was at that point I was hooked on their music. The music of the group has an authentic Irish feeling to it, but it's not the same old same old that so many recording artist claiming to be Celtic produce. The ballads, jigs, and reels are authentic and original, and in the case of works that the group did not compose, performed in a new manner. The group brings these same qualities to its Christmas collection ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT.

The arrangements of the holiday music are similar to their other recordings. Some of the music is grouped in medleys while others are stand alone works. The arrangements vary in content. Some contain vocals while others are instrumental, and as always, the familiar is blended with the lesser known which creates a great listening experience.

Ireland may not be known for its rich treasury of Christmas music. There is the "Wexford Carol" and "Christmas in Killarney" but while risking blaspheming the name of Bing Crosby, I'm not sure the latter can be considered immortal. This recording demonstrates how Christmas music is truly at home in Irish music and listening to it can almost transport a person to a pub in Ireland during the Christmas season, enjoying the company of friends and quenching thirst with a pint of Guinness. I suppose I sound like one of the "all of the folks at home" mentioned in the song "Christmas in Killarney," but the music of Cherish the Ladies can transport me back to Ireland and this collection can give the listener a feeling of Christmas in Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty deep and rare.......2005-12-06

This CD is simply beautiful.

The soulful beauty of Celtic music melding with rich and sweet Christmas tunes...the amazingness of Cherish the Ladies as a band and Heidi Talbot's clear, deep, soothing voice...ahhh, its so perfect.

This has quickly become one of my favorite Christmas CD's, but it is of such quality that no doubt I'll find myself listening to it during the rest of the year as well.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful alternative to "traditional" Christmas music.......2005-12-04

What? You're tired of "traditional" Christmas music? I can't imagine why, they only play the same 20 songs nonstop for 3 months a year in every shopping venue in America.

If you want something different that will still appeal to the traditionalists (we all have a few of those in our families), look no further. This is not only a top-notch Christmas album, but generally a top-notch Celtic album as well. Cherish the Ladies is undoubtedly one of the finest Irish groups in the world, not to mention one of the finest all-female groups! This album is a great collection of classic Christmas tunes, some common, some obscure, that will make for such a nice change come this holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Celtic Christmas Album.......2004-11-19

I recently purchased this album and can't recommend it enough! I have been a big fan of Cherish the Ladies for many years but I'm so happy they made a holiday album because I own many celtic Christmas albums and this is the best yet! Beautiful stunning singing from Heidi Talbot backed by the wonderful harmonies in favorite songs of the holidays and ones that I didn't know but are sure to become new favorites. The tunes are interspersed with wonderful traditional music - Joanie Madden leads the band with her masterful whistle playing setting the tone for a great foot stomping album that I know won't be leaving my Disc player for the holiday season!

5 out of 5 stars I Love this CD!.......2005-09-08

This was my first Cherish the Ladies CD and is still my favorite. It's not that that the others are subpar, this one is just amazing. My two favorites are Matt Hyland (great harmonizing) and The Waves of Kilkee (beautiful melody) I had the good fortune to see them in St. Paul, MN at the Irish Fair in 04, defintely the best act there. Joannie is not only an amazing flute/whistle player, but one of the funniest people fronting any band.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome surprise!.......2005-05-27

I received this CD by mistake from BMG over four years ago. I procrastinated and forgot to return it, and in a recent spring cleaning I found it, opened it, and popped it in the CD player. What a surprise! I loved every track, from the traditional jigs and reels to the innovative remake of "Leader of the Band," which took me by surprise and had me singing along. Thanks to this mistake, I now intended to collect their other albums. Now I only wish I had listened to it years ago!

4 out of 5 stars A nice (mainly) trad album!.......2003-03-01

A nice later album from this all-star, all-gal trad band. On this album, the Ladies bring in various members of their families to perform alongside the ensemble...The Longs, Maddens, Clancys, et al., pitch in, and show where the group's trad roots come from. Other than a horrendous version of Dan Fogelberg's '70s AOR neolith, "The Leader Of The Band," this is a great album. (I "get" the thematic tie between the lyrics and this album; I just can't stand the song and think it's really cheesy.) Otherwise, this disc has an admirable mix of instrumentals and ballads, and Joannie Madden's piping is, as ever, a heavenly aural treat. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Just Good Music.......2002-11-16

I have always felt it difficult to explain *why* I like a particular album by a particular group. Something about music is to me beyond explanation. It moves the soul, moves the passions, and brings a smile to your face; yet it defies explanation. Nevertheless, I know good music when I hear it, and this was good music.

One thing I can say is that I have heard neo-Irish and Celtic groups who, in my opinion, completely ruin the music. They add all these strange electronic effects, and mix the ancient music with a few too many electric guitars and such. Cherish the Ladies is not a group in that category. They understand traditional music, and how to use modern instruments to enhance it rather than destroying it.

It's just good music.

5 out of 5 stars Heart- pounding Irish dance and heart-tugging ballads.......2002-08-28

This is my second Cherish The Ladies album, and as much as I loved the first one, this one makes me appreciate these gals all the more.

First, the alternating enervating dance numbers with tender ballads gives the album a great balance. The fact that one of the ballads, "The Waves of Kilkee", is strictly and beautifully instrumental just adds the variety of this CD.

And then, there are a couple of welcome surprises here. One is a touching rendition of Dan Fogelberg's "The Leader Of The Band", dedicated to their fathers. Fogelberg's song is enhanced by the weaving of a traditional reel, "Devaney's Goat", with the main melody.

The set of dances that follows is a Father's Day Medley that starts with a hornpiipe played by banjo and accordian, the same combination of instruments playing the following reel. Third part of the medley, "Drag Her 'round the Road", features Paddy Rafferty's authentic traditional lilting. The medley ends with "Bag of Spuds, featuring some step dancing.

This medley is followed by another welcome surprise, the song "John of Dreams", borrowed first from a Southern Italian lullaby and then used as a principal theme in Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6.

These, cuts 6,7,8,& 9, form the heart of the album, but the energizing jigs and reels and the exquisite ballads as sung by Aoife Clancy that surround this "heart" set off the whole collection perfectly.

Highly recommended for all lovers of Irish and Celtic music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Ladies' Best!.......2003-04-09

As usual with a Cherish the Ladies CD this one is full of wonderful songs and performances.

My favorite is the title track, a wistful song written and sung by Cathie Ryan.
Joannie Madden gives a virtuoso performance on tin whistle in track 8 and Cathie Ryan turns out another tear jerker in My Own Native Land on track 9.
The step dancing in track 4 will make you wish you could dance and... ahh, they're ALL good!

Buy a copy and see for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars The Back Door to the best celtic music!.......2000-08-01

Each song recorded by these "cherished ladies" is a jewel to listen to. This recording has a mixture of silly and fun melodies to very heart rendering songs that will linger in your heart long after you have stopped listening. I highly recomend this collection of songs to anyone that truly does cherish celtic sound.
