The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. Great To See The Wilburys Back In Print.......2007-07-19

It's great to see both albums by the Traveling Wilburys back in print, and even though Roy Orbison and George Harrison didn't live to enjoy it, the other three, thankfully, are still alive and still working musically. The best songs overall are "Handle With Care", which George Harrison originally intended as a B-side for a solo single, and "End Of The Line", which says that if you take pleasure in life's simple joys, you'll be a happier person than if you try to indulge in every pleasure around. This set, which also includes a DVD, is essential for fans of both roots-rock AND pure pop.

The combined talents of Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, all superstars in there own right, overflow in this superb collection. Even a not so big Dylan fan like me loved the way these superbly talented musicians, blended and complimented each other to create some wonderful music for every fan to enjoy.
It keeps alive the memory of the immense talent of Orbison and Harrison and is a must for the CD collection

A Must Have Addition.................2007-07-18

Unavailable for some time, the Travelling Wilburys in a must have addition to ones CD collection of essential music. The initial offering (CD # 1)is head and shoulders taller then the later issued CD # 2, which is absent the magic of its predecessor. The loss of Roy Orbison was perhaps a factor. The DVD is good, particularly showing the creative process that went into creating the initial offering. It is disappointing in that it only shows 2 live performances from the initial offering. However, worth the price

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. We really liked the movie and were moved by the songs and the chemistry between the two leads. We especially liked about the first 7 or 8 songs. I'd recommend seeing the movie to really appreciate the music.

Fabulous follow-up to the film.......2007-07-19

My wife and I loved the film, so had to get the soundtrack. Since then I've given it to two friends.

Every song is gorgeous. Both the male and female vocals are filled with emotion. (Maybe more than some people would be comfortable with.) You might have to see the film to really appreciate all of the lyrics and soulful renditions. But several of the songs would make my playlist any day.

Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams's ninth solo studio album, is a return to form in every way. He's already shown that he can bash out three albums in one year--not to mention the hilarious fake hip-hop records posted for free on his Web site--and that he can sound as much like the Grateful Dead as he wants to in his constant subsequent touring. Backed once again by the Cardinals, Adams synthesizes and refines his approach to smooth, gorgeous country-pop. "Tears of Gold" is one of the best songs he's written in ages, while "Two" is a slowly percolating, sweet little number that recalls Sean Hayes in its soulful folksiness (someone named Sheryl Crow accompanies Adams on vocals). One of the greatest treats of this languorous, twangy album is the subtle ways that genre gets played with. "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is the best Harvest outtake Neil Young never wrote, while the treated, synth-sounding guitar solo on the druggy, chooglin' "Halloweenhead" sounds like it comes straight out of Journey. And "The Sun Also Sets" sounds more than a little like Rufus Wainwright covering Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." It bursts with enough melodrama as to border on musical theater. But, as is clear on these songs of love and loss, Adams has always been at his best when giving into his most mellow, dramatic side. --Mike McGonigal

I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words--easy, Tiger.

Once again Ryan Adams makes another solid album. every song is great. My favorites are Hallowenhead, Tears of Gold and Everybody Knows. So go ahead and buy it you won't regret it.

A true Ryan Adams classic.......2007-07-18

I've been trying for years to nail down who Ryan Adams reminds me of, and I've finally figured it out: Van Morrison. Both are roots-bound almost to the point of being revivalists, both are notoriously temperamental, and both are wildly, erratically prolific, sometimes to a fault; yet both are unquestionably geniuses (almost unarguably so, much to the chagrin of their detractors).

So what does this analogy have to do with a review of "Easy Tiger?" To put Ryan Adams's new album in perspective, it would be the equivalent of Van Morrison's "Moondance." It is the first record that comes across as being almost conservative in its polished professionalism. If you're a Van fan who hated "Moondance" because its warm, relaxed, pastoral vibe felt like a "sellout" after the wild abandon of Them and the heady experimentalism of "Astral Weeks" (and I'm sure there were more than a few people of that opinion at the time), then likewise, "Easy Tiger" is going to sound too safe, too pat. But if you think "Moondance" is a beautiful masterpiece, then you may well love "Easy Tiger."

This is the album where Ryan Adams sobers up, bears down, and actually turns out an album of "all-killer, no filler" (arguably the first since "Heartbreaker"). And if that comes at the expense of the roughness and raggedness that has accompanied his best work to this point, then so be it. But ten years down the road (if Ryan Adams keeps getting songs like "When the Stars go Blue" covered by enough mainstream artists to make him a mainstream artist himself), my money is on this album being considered as one of his true classics.

In a way, it's almost a career summation up to this point. It has the acoustic front-porch "Heartbreaker" vibe on "These Girls," the lush "Gold"-ballad feel on "Two, and "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" the "Demolition"-style late-night laments of "Everybody Knows and "The Sun Also Sets," the atmospheric "Love Is Hell" angst of "Off Broadway," the "Rock and Roll" crunch on "Halloweenhead," the jam-band "Cold Roses" sound on "Goodnight Rose," the "Jacksonville City Nights" countrypolitan of "Tears of Gold," and to make it complete, "Pearls On a String" and "Two Hearts" even harken back to his Whiskeytown days.

In fact, this album plays almost like a Ryan Adams Greatest Hits album that, like a good hits comp, manages the trick of being summative without being disjointed or haphazard. And like a good compilation, these songs are all keepers. If this is what being sober means, here's hoping Ryan can stay on the straight and narrow from here on out and have a later-day career as interesting and rich as Van Morrison's.

Upon my first listen to this album I could not finish it...the songs were a little too twangy and Adams' voice was as well. My taste is more on the rock side of things, and this album falls definitely more on the country side.

One Man's Trash Ain't Another Man's "Ripoff".......2007-07-16

As with many artists, Ryan Adams has two kinds of fans: A) Those who pour over and worship his every utterance, and B) people who have or dig songs from an album or two. I fall a little closer to the former. But I'm a recent convert, so I can still remember life before impending fandom set in. There are good and bad things about Easy Tiger. The uber-slick production on every track tends to sound forced. Snare drums hit with razor-clarity and guitars are pro-tools polished, and crisp. This might attract some listeners, but his last two albums (Jacksonville City Nights and 29) had pretty rough edges, evoking alt. country bleed-through of a bygone era. As for whether or not the songwriting is still good, again that's entirely subjective. Some people admire where he's at as an artist, and some will just never forget that song they loved 6, 8, or 10 years ago. Moments like that are hard for even the most prolific writers to re-duplicate. I say put the record on, drive around for a few days listening, but not giving it your full attention. See if it becomes the soundtrack to what you're going through. It did with me, which is why I can't stop playing Easy Tiger now.

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. Baby You Can Drive My Karma.......2007-07-19

The songs of John Lennon are a perfect compilation for a political action CD set. The artists who contributed their covers are faithful to the original music and lyrics while adding their own undercurrent trademark sound. It is good to hear these songs again. The Black Eyed Peas provide a fist pumping rendition of "Power To The People." What better time to bring this song out of hibernation. People need to feel empowered today more than ever to Save Darfur, Stop Global Warming and End the War in Iraq. Power to the people, right on!!

Very Good Mix of Group.......2007-07-16

It's always interesting to me to hear a musician / group that I like cover the work of another musician / group that I like. The question is - "would I buy that cover?" . I was not disappointed here. I like the songs selected but it was the groups picked to cover them that made this collection A+ for me.

I recommend this collection , but since covers are what they are, take a listen to the samples first. Like a lot of covers, people can have wildly different opinions of the right or wrong of it all.

True to Lennon's Music with the Performers Own Stamp.......2007-07-15

A very well done CD, that is true to Lennon's music while the performing artists' contribute their own stamp. An example is U2 with a slight reggae sound early on in "Instant Karma" with The Edge's guitar making a distinct sound deeper in that contributes nicely while Bono's fading vocals singing "Shine on" at the end add another nice dimension. Although not a big Black Eye Peas fan, the Peas do an excellent job with "Power to the People" mixing chorous with an overlaid vocal. "Beautiful Boy" by Ben Harper is a touching ode to a child as it was intended and sounds beautiful as does the Postal Service on "Grow Old with Me". Lenny Kravitz does not display the demonstrative pain in his voice in "Cold Turkey" as Lennon but his vocal sounds unique and appropriate as he sounds tough, semi-sedate and powerful, depicting a man in distress. Jokob Dylan has a powerful deep vocal with Dhani Harrison with backing vocals, with standout guitar reminiscent of his dad, on "Gimme Some Truth". And another surprise, Christina Aguilera does a very impressive job on "Mother" showing that she has grown into another dimension. All the artists perform extraordinaryily well, thus it is hard to say which are the best but it is fitting that this Lennon Darfor tribute ends touchingly with one of Lennon's final compositions, "Real Love" by Regina Spektor.

Fourteen years, a live CD/DVD, some solo albums, and one tragic suicide after Crowded House's last release comes this highly anticipated reunion. Singer/songwriter Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour reunited after the 2005 death of drummer Paul Hester, brought in a new member and two producers (Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite) to replace longtime cohort Mitchell Froom, and the impressive result is a logical and overdue addition to the band's previous four albums. Finn's knack for a melodic ballad remains firmly in place as Time on Earth coasts on his dreamy voice and introspective, hook-laden pop choruses. However, this is a more reflective collection that requires a few spins to fully reveal its charms. Finn co-writes "Even a Child" with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and that and the frisky "She Called Up" are the most buoyant tracks on this predominantly pensive disc. Finn has generally shaded towards a darker edge and this hour-long set might have benefited from more of the lighter touch he applies to "Transit Lounge," a song enhanced by Beth Rowley's lovely and startling wordless vocals along with jazzy electric piano and even airport sound effects. Strings, sitar, and intricate production add subtle elements that bolster the timeless musical qualities Finn has always reveled in. The ominous, even brooding "Silent House," a co-write with all three Dixie Chicks, is another highlight that sounds like nothing either has done before as it floats along on fuzz guitar and hurdy-gurdy, both courtesy of Johns. Trimming some weaker cuts would have made this a more focused listen, but Time on Earth is a worthy successor to Crowded House's existing catalog--a high compliment indeed. --Hal Horowitz

I have been a fan from the very beginning (actually back to Split Enz) and have just about every piece of music that was ever available in their back catalog (b-sides and whatnot). This album is not quite as good as the other four albums, but still a 5-star rating because it is better than 95% of everything else out there. Neil Finn is the master craftsman when it comes to lyrics and musical composition and this album does not disappoint in that regard. The band broke up in the early 90s and then their drummer Paul Hester committed suicide in 2005, thus the album is generally slower and has many more reflective moments than previous efforts. They have an excellent new drummer now and they plan to continue as a recording band for what could be a long while! I am sure glad to have them back! Peace to Paul Hester- all us "Crowdies" miss you too.

Sorry, but this album bored me.......2007-07-18

I almost feel unpatriotic saying this, but "Time on Earth" bored me. I have listened to this album many times in my work place - alone in an office and through the company's general sound system. I have genuinely tried to like this album - I haven't minded some of Crowded House's other recordings in the past, although I rather liked Split Enz a trifle more.

The instrumentation didn't seem to be very interesting to me and the vocal delivery seemed to be somewhat on the perfunctory side. I listened to the words and didn't find myself engaged with the sentiments of any of the songs. However, it is a very competent and professional recording and people are likely to notice that. But the whole thing sounds very staid, conservative, dour and even a little too earnest for me - I make this judgement on the overall effect/affect of the music I hear here. I guess that this sounds like a strange complaint from a bloke who professes a love of the music of Haydn, Palestrina, Schumann and David Sylvian! However, Crowded House ostensively make Pop Music and I try to get into a different mind-set when I listen to Pop Music. I don't quite know what I am supposed to do with this new Crowded House album - play it at dinner parties? dance to it? listen to it in my favourite armchair? listen to it in the car? play it at barbecues? put it on if I ever threw a wild party?
I can't really imagine that I would turn to this album in any of the situations outlined above. The "Time on Earth" exhibited by Crowded House sounds very unadventurous to me.

Is Crowded House trying to communicate some interesting and important messages to us via this new album or simply entertain us or are the members simply trying to return to their chosen profession via this album and make some dough?

I'm blown away..........2007-07-17

At the outset, I'll admit that I have never considered myself a huge Crowded House fan. Oh sure, I enjoyed Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong like the rest of the world in the '80's, but I never bought an CH album before this one.

On a whim, I picked this up last week. To be succinct, I'm completely blown away. I'm usually a prog-rock fan (ie Rush, Yes, etc.). Coming from this perspective, this new CH album reminds me of "prog-pop," in that the songwriting is smart, well-crafted, and pushing the boundaries of the genre. Additionally, Finn and the gang seem to have been around long enough to know, for example, how to utilize just one or two notes on the piano in order to subtly "make" the entire song.

This being said, this album has something that most prog doesn't contain: absolutely beautiful, personal, and touching lyrics. Although often melancholy, the songs never degenerate into a mere joyless apprehension of life. Rather, the lyrics are deeply bittersweet; consequently, they come across as refreshingly unaffected and ultimately, quite heartfelt. They, along with Finn's delivery, make this a very special album.

In short, I am deeply impressed by this record and I am now looking forward to discovering CH's back catalog.

Run, Don't Walk, to Grab This One.......2007-07-15

It's hard to articulate how good this disc is. If you're a fan of melodic and smart pop/rock, you will love this album. Neil Finn is at the very top of his game, and the songs are more stick-to-your-ribs hooky than the last few of his efforts. I bought this three days ago and have sat and listened to it front-to-end six times since. That's extremely rare these days!

More of the Excellence You've Come To Expect.......2007-07-13

When I heard in 2006 that Neil Finn's planned next solo album was going to be a Crowed House album, I was a little disappointed. Owning CH albums, Split Enz albums, and the two Finn Brothers albums, I ultimately find Neil Finn's solo material (_Try Whistling This_ & _One Nil_) to be his best work. However, since this is Neil Finn we're talking about--easily one of pop music's best songwriters--regardless of what name was going to be on the album, it would likely be up to par with his previous work. However, stacked up against such phenomenal post-CH work, _Time on Earth_ does ultimately dissapoint a little bit.

Lyrically, the suicide of original drummer Paul Hester looms over nearly the entire album. From the beautiful opener "Nobody Wants To" to the Split Enz-like "She Called Up" to the plaintive "Silent House," Neil Finn is clearly mourning within this material. The first half of the album is just as good as anything Crowded House has done, with "Pour Le Monde" being another stunning, melancholy work of songwriting genius that fans have come to expect from Finn ("he imagines the world/as the angel ascending/like the ghost of a man/who is tied up to the chair/and he tries to believe/that his life has a meaning/with his hand on his heart"). About midway through the album, the momentum slows down a bit. "Heaven That I'm Making," co-written with Johnny Marr sounds like something that might've made it onto _One Nil_, but fails to make much of an impression, and is followed by the pretty, but again, slightly lackluster "A Sigh." Along with "Silent House," "A Sigh" sounds like something more from the "Rain" movie score that Finn was involved with a few years ago than a CH or Finn album--very subtle, low-key, lo-fi offerings. "English Trees" continues the pretty, plaintive, reflective mood that dominates the middle of the album before jumping back into the upbeat, mysterious "She Walked Her Way Down" ("and i know what the answer is/but i'm happy to be here tonight/and when you're in the moment/everything you want is right"). "Transit Lounge" sounds like the experimental side of Neil Finn' solo work and is one of the best, freshest sounding songs on the album. Closing out the album are two more low-key and subtle songs--"You Are The One To Make Me Cry" and "People Are Like Suns." Closers on albums that Finn is involved with--"Together Alone," "Addicted," "Into The Sunset," "Gentle Hum"--are usually breathtakingly beautiful. "People Are Like Suns" does not match the heights achieved by those songs, but it comes close, ending the album with the "appreciate every moment" theme that is displayed on this CH album in the wake of Paul Hester's death: "better take all the love that you got in a single hand...." People are like suns..."they come and they go...."

_Time On Earth_ is another great album to add to your Crowded House collection. It's a far more subtle offering than _Woodface_ or _Together Alone_, but it rewards the listener more and more with repeated listenings. Fans of Finn's prior work will not be disappointed.

Continuum is about as apt a title as it gets for John Mayer's third studio disc. Every element, from the peerless guitar playing to the plainspoken poetry of the lyrics to the breathy-sincere singing, makes a return from previous efforts. But to weakly pronounce this another worthwhile effort from an artist the world has come to expect a whole lot from and then call it a day would be no minor misdeed, because it's also the best, boldest disc he's ever made. Taking maturity as a theme throughout, Mayer tackles a batch of adulthood's bogeymen: indifference on the uptempo chart-climber "Waiting for the World to Change," aging on the melancholy-sweet "Stop This Train," and emotional trainwreckage on the big-rocking "In Repair." That's not to suggest he's turned overly introspective--check the Jimi Hendrix cover "Bold As Love," where he hits one home for guitarists who've been living in the shadow of legend everywhere, and the hard-charging "Belief," which benefits from a mesmerizing, liquid groove. Personal, Intimate, Incomparable.......2007-07-19

I am not familar with John Mayer's work prior to "Continuum", but this dude got it right with this particular disc. I was drawn in by his breakout song "Waiting on the world to change" impressed with its political conscience. But after listening to the whole disc a number of times, the other outstanding songs unfolded.

The song "Slow dancing in a burning room" was the first song to jump out at me; any person that has been in a tumultuous relationship can definately relate. The lyrics in that song are amazing. After I wore that song out, I noticed "Gravity" and its awesome lyrics. Next, was the old Hendrix song "Bold as Love" Mayer might not be on Hendrix's guitar playing level, but he does a masterful job on this one. The more uptempo "Belief" then caught my ear. A song I believe is ultimate truth. Finally I felt the flavor of "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" A very haunting and compelling song and performance by Mayer.

He will be performing with Eric Clapton tommorow Bryant PK NYC 7.00AM free. They say get there early, but if he is with Clapton you might have to camp out the day before. I don't know the classification of Mayer's music, but I do believe this record brings back "excellent" lyrical content to the mainstream.

If you like John Mayer, you'll love this album. "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" is totally relatable if you've ever been though a relationship that's ended. The rest of the album is fantastic....an album you can listen to over and over, and still want to listen again.

Although the music of Norah Jones continues to blend pop, soul, folk, and country with a seasoning of jazz, her third album for Blue Note is the first where she's written (or collaborated on) all the material. Bought this CD after hearing "Wish I Could" on the radio; this is a gorgeous, hauntingly beautiful, moving song.

I too am surprised to see the strongly negative reviews here. Her 3 CDs have sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, so there is clearly a strong fan base somewhere! The added plus on this third CD is that Norah wrote or co-wrote every song, so we are gaining a glimpse into her musical soul as well as hearing the beauty of her voice.

There are some real gems here. "Sinkin' Soon" evokes 1930's jazz with its honky-tonk piano (played by Norah) and its wah-wah trombone. "Until the End" has country roots. "Not My Friend" is a mellow, dreamy, wistful song with dagger-sharp lyrics. "My Dear Country" is a lament about what election day hath wrought. The final title cut, "Not Too late," winds things up on an optimistic note.

It is not surprising that Norah has good musical genes. Her father, Ravi Shankar, brought his sitar to the Beatles and Indian music to a global audience. Norah's seamless blending of country, jazz, blues, pop, and folk brings great talent and aural delight to a new musical generation.

Not as strong as the her first two releases.......2007-07-11

In my opinion, this CD is simply not as strong as her first two CDs. Most of the songs are fine, but forgettable. A couple are just a bit weird-sounding for my taste. Out of her 3 CDs, I preferred "Come Away With Me", although I understand that Ms. Jones feels that her current CD is a truer reflection of her musical style.

Right after I bought this CD, I was privileged enough to see her in concert. She is clearly talented, and has an accomplished band. The concert was wonderful and was over before I knew it. Her performance got rave reviews in the local newspaper the next day.

I look forward to her next release, mostly to see how her artistic style evolves.

Not her best.......2007-07-11

I own all three of her CDs. Come Away with Me is the best IMO. Her passion and talent shine through. Each song was worthy to be on the CD. In Feels Like Home, it seemed she relaxed a bit, had a little more fun, but lost some of the passion, a couple of the songs were not up to what I expected, but passed as entertaining. This third CD is the worst. My impression was that now that she has made a name for herself she can put any track on a CD without much scrutiny. I have listened to it a few times, but it just doesn't do anything exciting for me. A big disappointment.

That's about the highest praise I can muster for this effort. It isn't that it's BAD, but it just never achieves "lift off."

I wish I could wax enthusiastic, but after quite a few listens at this point, I don't think my opinion is likely to change appreciably.

Time for Ms. Jones to find her passion. It isn't evident on this CD.

The Brandi Carlile story so far is fairly short: fresh-faced singer-song writer from rural Ravensdale, Washington, quietly releases a 2005 debut that has critics and fans reaching for their thesauruses searching for appropriate adjectives to describe her voice. Patsy Cline, Jeff Buckley, kd lang, Beth Orton, Linda Ronstadt, and Aimee Mann get name-checked as Carlile and her guitar-and-bass-playing Hanseroth twins-led band criss-cross the country for two years, first as openers, then as headliners. Cue the overproduced, disappointing follow-up album? Not so fast. On The Story, Carlile teams up with veteran roots producer T Bone Burnett, who brings in vintage equipment and strips down her sound. Instead of using overdubs, the new songs--most of which were already road-tested--are recorded live, giving the ballads and midtempo rockers a tough, uncompromising edge and a fuller, more aggressive attack. Echoes of country and folk color the bucolic "Have You Ever" and the unadorned acoustic "Cannonball," but it's the sweeping drama of the more epic-sounding "Until I Die," "Late Morning Lullaby," and the U2-styled "My Song" that leave the greatest lasting impressions. Brandi Carlile has a rare voice, consistently spilling over with honesty, purity, and passion. Her dynamic and tonal range is truly exceptional and on par with the likes of k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, and Patsy Cline--at times soft, swooping, and clear as a bell ("Turpentine," "Josephine," "Cannonball"), and then ferocious to the point of breaking ("The Story," "My Song"). A voice like Carlile's when paired with the right material is a winning combination, and The Story's country-meets-Radiohead ballads and rockers do not disappoint. While the songs on are not as consistently stellar as those on her self-titled debut album, they are more often than not solid, and show off her talents and confidence as both an artist and performer, which have fully bloomed since her debut. This, coupled with T Bone Burnett's light, live production style, creates an album that is ultimately more rewarding than her first. The high points on The Story have raised the bar considerably for Carlile, and they are frequent. Her choice to record the album in a live setting inside the studio lends it a raw intimacy and authenticity noticeably absent from most studio recordings, and leaves us with not only an album, but a work of art. Really enjoyed this release. She can burn like Melissa at times, fall back on senstive sounds like Kathleen Edwards when she wants. There are influences from 60s rock (Elton, Beatles, Mott), yet her distinct warble blossoms as a wildwood flower. I'm gonna find her debut CD.

If you gravitate toward other female singer-songwriter greats in league with Sarah Harmer, Alice Peacock or Jessica Sykes, this should work for you.

Brandi Carlile has a unique sound and I must admit that I wasn't sure I liked her at first. But a friend encouraged me to listen to "The Story" more closely. After hearing it a few times, I fell in love. Later, I heard "Turpentine" on Grey's Anatomy... wow! I bought the cd and am totally addicted. It stays in my car because I listen to it regularly. One of my all-time favorite songs is "Wasted".

The first three tunes are great - the rest of the album turns into Indigo Girls type rock - what happened to the Brandi Carlile from her first album? I guess these were the tunes thrown out and T-Bone Burnette was called to save the day - which he didn't do. Typical sophomore slump album.

If the art of the female singer-songwriter revolves around coffee-table soliloquies then Eye to the Telescope--the debut album from Edinburgh-born chanteuse/guitarist KT Tunstall--is a pleasing mediation between the traditional demands of brooding egocentricity (espresso) and frothy commerciality (cappuccino). KT Tunstall has star quality. "Suddenly I See" is an effortlessly liberating pop fillip while, conversely, "False Alarm" redresses ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" for losers who had nothing to lose to begin with. However, Tunstall isn't entirely convinced by the compromise ("I'm struggling to cater for the space I'm meant to fill" she sings) and "Miniature Disasters"--one of several strong numbers showcasing her aptitude for wrapping up pop tunes in either folky bluesiness or ponderous jazz--catalogues her desires for unfettered self-expression. The opening cut "Other Side Of The World" might sound like Dido without the giftwrapped grief (she's none too flattered with the comparisons) but Eye to the Telescope is spiritually closer to Carole King and Elvis Costello than Katie Melua. I really love this CD, it puts me in a good mood every time I put it on. This girl is a talented singer and more of her should be heard on the radio. Her songs are artfully sung and she has her own original sound.

I had already purchased the track "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" as a single, and borrowed this album from a friend to hear the rest of the songs. Upon a first listen, I only liked about three of the tracks, but as I kept it in my car and continued listening to it, I found my appreciation of the album as a whole increasing, and decided that I needed to buy my own copy. My favorite tracks are now "Miniature Disasters", "Silent Sea", and "Universe and U"--not, to my surprise, the tracks that first brought me to the album.

Eye to the Telescope.......2007-05-19

After recieving this CD as a gift, I was dubious that it would be any good. I was never all that fond of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, it seemed to have no depth. I was shocked to hear the songs which were so DEEP and POWERFUL: Other Side of the World, Another Place to Fall, Under the Weather, and Through the Dark in particular. In fact, the only song that I didn't like on the CD was Black Horse.

Waiting to change,
But she's cold inside
She wants to be like
the water"

I also like that KT Tunstall has VARIETY. The songs aren't all out of the same mold. I get so confused with other popular artists today because all their songs sound the same!

"You say you feel like a natural person
You haven't got nothing to hide
So why do you feel imperfection
Cut like a sword in your side"

And finally: The Lyrics. Not the same old "I want my boyfriend back" or "My heart is, like, so broken" type of song. Tunstall's lyrics have MEANING and are really beautiful.

"And I used to talk
With honest conviction
Of how I predicted my world
I'm gonna leave it to to star gazers
Tell me what your telescope says"

This has quickly become my favorite CD and I highly recommend it. KT Tunstall has really conveyed depth, power, beauty, and meaning all in one CD.

The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. The 23 songs drawn from those performances cover most of the songs from the Pete Seeger tribute, but venture drastically into Springsteen's popular back catalog ("Atlantic City," "Highway Patrolman," "Blinded By the Light") while delving further into his affinity for multiple styles of music, from folk and blues to gospel and country. "If I Should Fall Behind" plays like a tear-jerking last call in a dimly lit pub. "Open All Night" has been shaped into pure swing, complete with pedal steel and sax. And "Jesse James," with its furious banjo, spectator handclaps, and Springsteen howl, could pass for the Pogues, circa 1985. Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

The best live CD I've ever heard.......2007-07-11

The Boss doesn't make bad CDs or bad concerts, I am told. I've wanted to hear him in concert since I heard his first songs. I actually was getting tickets to one of the shows that got cancelled due to a band member's illness and he's come to two cities--after I've left them. If I never make it, this CD is better than a lot of the live shows that I have been lucky enough to see.

I miss the E Street Band, but the Sessions Band he's gathered for this effort is excellent. His backup singers are soulful and the 17 piece band can handle anything from swing to Irish without missing a beat.

"Varied" is a mild description for this CD. Anyone else did this kind of concert, you'd have mixed reviews. Bruce can put folk next to swing next to gospel and then turn around and rock the house without ticking people off. He's also going international, doing American music right next to Irish traditional ballads and it appears the Dublin audience is eating it up.

Bruce breathes new life into the music here. I grew up hearing "Jesse James" but it wasn't like this. And "Jacob's Ladder" sure isn't what I heard in church.

He's also taken "Blinded by the Light" which was one of the first Bruce songs I heard and breathed new life into the live version.

"How can a poor man stand such times and live?" is one of the most heartwrenching protest songs I've heard. He really took the comments about the Dixie Chicks "Shut up and sing" to heart.

I don't like usually live CDs most of the time. Hate the staticky sussurus of the applause in the background and some idiot has got to yell the performer's name at least once per song. "Live in Dublin" is beautifully engineered. You get the 'feel' of the hall and the voices of the audience joining Bruce in song, yet the really annoying audience noise is minimized.

Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome- The Seeger Sessions" album, and this new one "Live In Dublin- With The Sessions Band" are both nothing but pure genious!!!! It's the best music that I have heard from ANYONE in any area of music, in many years! I absolutely love it!

I am so glad that I was able to experience this in concert, in the summer of 2006 near Chicago, IL. It was an experience that I will never forget. The music just captures you, and doesn't let go.

I have purchased both versions of "We Shall Overcome" (So glad to finally have "Buffalo Gals" & "Bring 'Em Home" on CD!). I also have "Live In Dublin" on CD, and the DVD too!

Keep this type of music coming Bruce! It's great!

springsteen at his best.......2007-06-24

I'm a springsteen fan for 25 years. saw already 8 concerts of bruce in the netherlands, also the session tour in my hometown rotterdam. for me, this is springsteen at his best. of course I like the rockin bruce but how he play this country/folk songs with so much passion and feeling, it touch me very much. no one can reach this level of making music. springsteen and country music. It's a great combination...."o mary don't you weep" is my favorite
