A Wonderful transition.......2007-03-29

The 1975 Main Course album resurrected the Bee Gees commercially, but also critically and also as great artists. They had been floundering abit after their last hit single in 1972 "Run to Me". They hooked up with the great producer, Arif Mardin on this album and they came forth with a new sound that was different from almost everying on the radio in 1975. Their first hit single was Jive Talkin" which is great, but for me the next two singles were even better. "Nights on Broadway" is one of the most moving singles ever(it spoke of someone who went to find his lost love who had gone to Broadway to find fame). It has a great beat, but it was the introduction of Barry's falsetto on this track that really brought it home. It peaked at #7 after "Jive Talkin" hit #1. The 3rd(and a great single is Fanny(be tender with my love). It is a lush ballad with soaring vocals by the boys. Another great track is "Snowbird" and is soulful and blends in so well with other tracks. "Winds of Change" is also great and reveals something of the boy's social conscience. A great album in 1975 to be followed, of course, by several other great albums in the years following. Paul Hanna

In the spring of 1975, a producer named Robert Stigwood sent thousands of copies of a single with no artist's name on them, with a title called "Jive Talkin'". It was an immediate hit and people wanted more. Remember, that in 1967, Mr. Stigwood pulled this same stunt with "New York Mining Disaster 1941", teasing the public into thinking it was the Beatles trying to see if they could make it under a different band title. The resulting surprise was that it was the Bee Gees; that tear-jerking, ballad writing trio that had faded into an old record collection that millions of record buyers owned. "Jive Talkin'" went to #1. "Night On Broadway" followed with two versions - one with the slow bridge and one without. "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)" was the third hit off the album. This latter one being a studio gem, but virtually UN-singable in public due to the intense over layered vocal work. Being a 'single' oriented group in the past, the Bee Gees had finally crafted an album worthy of all ten songs being memorable. "Wind Of Change" was actually the first demo sent to Stigwood, but became a concert staple instead with it's strong beat and funky rhythm. If you still longed for the old Bee Gees sound, "Songbird" fits the bill (no pun intended). It's as strong a love ballad as any they have had in the past. "Country Lanes" is nearly an anthem in it's perseverance of commitment to a lover. "Edge Of The Universe" and "All This Making Love" are, admittedly, novelty songs, but "Baby, As You Turn Away" is a grand finale. What better way to also compliment your latest album production than to have another artist (Olivia Newton-John) make a hit out of "Come On Over"? Given the times, the music and the variety, Main Course is no doubt one of the most important albums the Bee Gees have had in their roller coaster career.

Dessert for the senses!.......2002-11-11

This, along with "A Romantic Dinner For Two", is an excellent CD for background music. Great to eat dinner or read a book to. A good compilation for those who want to be introduced to classical music.

A great collection from the BG's.......2007-05-12

I just recently found a copy of this at the local church sale. At the moment I didn't know it was a hard find. I did know that when I had a vinyl copy in my youth, it blew me away. Going backwards in time it not always a good thing for a pop music lover. In this case, I just couldn't believe how great the Gibbs were at this point in their career. The production is clean, the songs complex, and the harmonies are ones only these three brothers could pull off. The hits from the cd sound wonderful so many years after the fact, and the less famous numbers are simply beautiful. Along with the BG's first, this is my favorite of their albums.

More Than Jive Talkin' - One of the Best Records EVER!!!.......2006-10-16

Most people would remember only the Disco tracks "Jive Talkin'" and "Nights on Broadway". A few more people will even remember the ballad "Fanny, be Teneder". Programming your CD player for only those tracks will result in missing out on a wonderful music oddesey.

For example, there is the overlooked Disco-infused "Wind of Change" with it's unforgettible orchestral hooks, trademark harmony, and gutiar hooks. It's hard to describe why I love this song so much. You GOTTA hear it to really apperciate it.

Then there is the the Barry ballad "Songbird". A sad, but heartouching song with an orchestra backdrop.

Next, you have "All this Making Love". A naughty ditty with a Queen-like rock beat and old-fashion piano riffs.

Robin + Piano + Orchestra = "Country Lanes" = PURE MAGIC!!!!

Experience the Country/Western side of the Brothers Gibb in the tracks "Come on Over" and "Baby as You Turn Away". Slow tempo gems with great music and trademark Harmonies.

Last, but definately NOT least, "Edge of the Universe". My personal favorite, has a Country-Rock theme with an interesting subject, and elaborate musical backdrop which includes at lesat three gutiars.

In conclusion, the best (and ONLY) way to truly appreciate this record (and the Bee Gees), is to simply place the CD into the player, press "Play", and enjoy.

One of the best albums of all time.......2006-06-09

As most people know, the Gibb brothers have always been gifted with the ability to identify with the world through their soulful songs. This album is remembered most for "Jive Talkin'", but listen closely to all songs. There's familiar ground here for everyone to hear. Don't miss out on listening to "Baby As You Turn Away" (an incredibly arranged song). The album has all great tunes..... Yes, even a country style song: "Come On Over"(another favorite of mine). If the world hasn't turned your heart to stone, you won't be disapointed with this disc AT ALL.

Let's see..

Track 1: title track. This one is the track that is found on the ScratchHappyLand promo 10" and the Scratchcratchratchatch mixtape. It's totally out there. Kid Koala mixes the theme from the Last Emperor with Cantonese dialogue from his collection. The dialogue is a conversation between a waiter in a Chinese restaurant and a diner discussing what's on the menu. Genius!

Track 2: Space Cadet. Really spacey (as per the title). Not found anywhere else except on this 10". Great track, but hard to describe.

Track 3: Barhopper 3. If you've heard the "Barhopper" tracks on Kid Koala's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome LP, this track travels down the same road. The setting is a guy in a bar trying his best to pick up a female patron with terrible pick up lines. "Would you like to come up to my place and listen to some albums?" Hehe.

Track 4: Bugs n' Beats. A great track if you're gonna scratch this 10". Lotsa skratchable bug noises. Weird.

Overall, this 10" is worth it if you're a big Koala fan. If you've never seen Koala live, you're missing out! The tracks on this 10" vinyl are gold, especially the title track. This is a must have if you enjoyed Koala's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome LP.
