The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars One the best soundtracks out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-06

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Raines Continues His Beautiful singing.......2005-04-01

This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection

5 out of 5 stars timeless and precious.......2006-02-15

this album sounds like it could have come out yesterday. the lyrics are clever and honest. the music pumps you up in a realistic way (not in a jock jams way). there's something really average about their introductions to each song but, at some point of the song Orange Juice strikes exactly into your lungs and heart. they'll take the breath from your throat without having to use hightech studio effects nor throwaway hookiness. pick this up and play it on repeat.

5 out of 5 stars Used to be an underrated gem...........2005-10-15

Is there anyband left from the late 70's or early 80's that hasn't been re-marketed and re-packaged? None comes to mind, however obscure at the time, they all seem bubble to the surface by these so called aficionados. Sometimes I wish whoever missed out back then, well them too bad, but obviously the web ruined all that. Anyway, this recording their proper 2nd LP is truly remarkable, compared to the Smiths, ehh, I think more Wedding Present & B&S. This is the melodic shambling stuff that is such an enjoyable listen, all tunes great.
Alos seek out their next LP 'Rip it Up' equally brilliant.
Both hard to find I imagine, so pick up the comps'.

5 out of 5 stars "This is what life is all about" .......2005-07-03

oh, dear. All these references to Talking Heads and Smiths and Television. The wee devoted children of Orange Juice are sending out a very wrong message to the explorers that come upon our cave. Good vagabonds, hear me: Orange Juice, in a single song, is happier than all the happy moments of those three named bands put together! The Smiths aren't the spawn of Orange Juice, Heavenly is!
For the somewhat initiated: I'm not going to do a whole history thing here, but those who know . . know "Ostrich Churchyard" was recorded by OJ as their first proper full-length. It got shelved when they signed to Polydor, which assigned producer Adam Kidron to work with the shambling band. Thank God. Ostrich Churchyard -- released eventually and coming around again in August as part of the Orange Juice compilation package "The Glasgow School" stinks. Kidron made "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever" into an immediate and blissful joy. The drums have a wonderful sound. The guitars a strummed buzzy crackle unlike ever heard at the time. It was schoolboyish and endearing and exciting and set indie -- this I agree -- spinning. From Heavenly and Tiger Trap and all that onward, this is home. Incidently, "The Glasgow School" will be a must purchase for those who don't have the early OJ singles, because they all will be compiled here and -- from Blue Boy, Simply Thrilled Honey, Poor Old Soul, Breakfast time and on -- they are heartbreakingly good. Get it if you can't find the rare old "The Heathers on Fire." By the way, Edwyn Collins is recovering slowly but surely from massive brain hemorrages. Go to EdwynCollins.com and wish him well on the bulletin boards. When asked if he had a message for his adoring fans, he wrote through his wife "Disaster Area." Upwards and onwards, indeed. L-O-V-E.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten Beauty.......2005-01-12

Preceding the similar sounding Smiths by a couple of years, Orange Juice had no problem in operating deliberately outside the mainstream and creating a highly original sound that took punk's intensity and DIY work ethos and fused it with a romantic lyrical sensibility and some soul for good measure.

Truth that it all only worked out as swimmingly as it did because they had in their ranks a worldclass songwriter called Edwyn Collins(best known for his worldwide solo hit "A Girl Like You") that composed for their debut a handful of classics with the excellence of "Felicity","Satellite City","Consolation Prize","Tender Object" or "Falling and Laughing".

Absolutely worth checking out under any pretenses.

4 out of 5 stars Credit where credit is due.......2003-03-29

Make no mistake, without Orange Juice the very existence of the Smiths would have been in serious jeopardy. Edwyn Collins' fey vocals and the band's earnest jangle were the foundation upon which Morrisey's career was built. As such, it's especially difficult to separate the influence of the band from the actual quality of their recordings. "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever", from its title on down, was a direct challenge to the post-punk nihilism so fashionable in the early 80's underground. At the time the sweet pop of Orange Juice sounded like a revolutionary gesture. 20 years later that gesture has long since lost its significance, but we're gratefully left with the sweet pop. Pleasant listening for anyone who secretly wished the Smiths were a little less about mopey white boy angst and a little more about the funk.

This isn't a good song, believe me. I keep trying to figure out what makes him think that this recording is worthy of distribution, even if it was just to his family. The only explanation I have is that the owner of the studio he frequents doesn't have any other customers. I'm convinced that the 'producer' also does the back up vocals (which are so insanely bad they're almost worth the $6.99 if you don't have to pay for shipping) and plays keyboards.

      Listen - don't buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Scottish Pop.......2000-12-10

Recorded in less than a week, this album contains wonderful melodies combined with self-effacing lyrics. The spontaneous sound of a new band with a new idea, showing influences of The Byrds, Chic, Velvet Underground.... yet still sounding totally original. This Glasgow band was on the Postcard label, along with Josef K and Aztec Camera.

5 out of 5 stars Amongst the all time classics.......2000-01-12

You Can't Hide Your Love Forever is one of the few 80's albums that brings me over all nostalgic. The albums blend of post-punk jangling guitars, tongue in cheek lyrics and genuinely good tunes brings back memories of a more innocent time before the birth of the boy band. Lead singer and songwriter Edwyn Collins croons through the tracks in his own inimitable style and proves throughout that well crafted lyrics can be as important to the feel of a song as the music itself. If you've ever seen the film Gregory's Girl, then this is the Album that Gregory would have been listening to in his bedroom at night. The Sound of young Scotland at it's best. If you haven't heard it...buy it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest debut albums of the 1980s........1999-03-29

Arguably one of the most important debut albums of the 1980s (not that you could tell by it's sales figures) 'You Can't Hide Your Love Forever' merged the spiky guitars of the punk movement with a wide eyed idealism and sense of fun. Influenced by such diverse artists as The Buzzcocks, Al Green and The Byrds, OJ tried to inject soul into the post-punk movement. Including a killer rerecording of first single 'Falling and Laughing' as well as a slightly ill-advised cover of 'L.O.V.E. Love' the album is bristling with fantastic melodies, hooks and the sort of lyrics that Morrissey would later become famous for.In fact, it's hard to imagine why any of these songs couldn't have become hit singles, and, maybe in these more indie friendly times, they could have.If you love pop music, and don't own this album, then there is a huge hole in your record collection.Ignore it at your peril!
