Just for kids?? No way!!.......2005-04-08
If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.

Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28
What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.
Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"
Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10
Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.
As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

A Gem!.......2007-03-18
None of the music here is particularly virtuosic. But it is all beautiful. The tone of Rév's piano is particularly rich and marvelously recorded. And she is an exceedingly sensitive and musicianly player. There are subtleties of inflection, dynamics and rubato that make every piece, no matter how familiar, interesting and engaging.
But I must break off writing here because I want to go back and listen again to the last five pieces here, by composers I imagine most of us have never heard: the Pole, Milosz Magin, and the Slovenian, Janez Maticic.

Originally released by renowned Folkways recording artist Ella Jenkins in 1965, Jenkins appears on Counting Games and Rhythms for the Little Ones with children from Lake Meadows Nursery School. Most appropriate for preschoolers and elementary-school children, this short collection of tunes neither panders to nor reaches frustratingly beyond the abilities of its intended audience. Jenkins comes across as a warm and respectful leader gently guiding her small charges through a set of verbal tumbling while reinforcing the importance of order and of both individual and group dynamics. There are a number of old favorites here, including "Two Little Black Birds" and "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," which makes the collection as enjoyable for parents as it is for kids. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description
Now available on compact disc, this collection exemplifies Ella Jenkins's skill at teaching children basic concepts through songs and games. Memory, a sense of rhythm, coordination, and vocal expression are all exercised in these simple, enjoyable activity songs. Classic counting songs include One Potato, Two Potato and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe; and Eight Clay Pigeons. "...merely wonderful" - Rolling Stone Magazine

Essential Release!.......2005-05-05
Their next single release ( without Beck ) was the almost equally strong recording "Little Games". This song was more immediately catchy, but with a great guitar playing from Page, showing that they were still a band with ambitions to be more than a hit-singles band. I remember it being played regularly on Danish radio in the summer of 1967, and it's hard to understand how it could fare even worse in the charts than "Happenings".
Consequently the group was allowed only days in the studio to record an accompanying album. The album, also called "Little Games" was originally only released in the US, and though it contains many great songs, some of it may sound somewhat rushed.
The original version contained 10 songs ( later reissues up till 16 ). The songs vary quite a lot a style.
Fine blues rockers like "Smile on Me Baby" and "Drinking Muddy Water" are much in the same vein as the "Roger the Engineer" 1966 album.
More commercial songs had been part of the Yardbirds' repertoire since the departure of Eric Clapton, and I always enjoyed this side of the band too.
"Tinker, Tailor, Soldier", Sailor", "No Excess Baggage" and "Little Soldier Boy" are all great examples of this.
"Little Soldier Boy" has often been criticized for been an under par recording. And I can agree that a little more time in the studio probably would not have harmed the song, but still it's one of my personal Yardbirds songs.
There are also a couple of instrumentals on the album. "White Summer" is very reminiscent of "Black Mountain Side" on the first Zeppelin album, and "Glipmses" is a relatively long experimental track featuring strange sounds and voices, and a choir much like the one they did on "Still I'm Sad"
Keith Relf's "Only the Black Rose" is an acoustic song, showing that Relf at this time probably already was seeking softer grounds.
"Puzzles", which was the B-side of the "Little Games" single, was oddly not included on the first versions of the album. It is a great up-beat band composition, featuring a terrific guitar solo from Page. The song was recorded during the "Little Games" sessions, so it ought to have been included in the first place
Of the other songs that were included on later versions of the album "Think About It" and "Goodnight Sweet Josephine" are great additions.
These two very different recordings were the A and B side of the final Yardbirds single released in spring 1968.
"Goodnight Sweet Josephine" is a very catchy commercial tune written by hitmaker Tony Hazzard ( "Fox on the Run", "Listen to Me" etc, ), and had it been released a year or two earlier, I'm sure it could have made it to the top of the singles charts. I prefer the version on CD 2 which I actually took for the original version.
"Think About It" is another experimental track, clearly pointing in the direction of what was to come with "Led Zeppelin"
"Ten Little Indians" is another fine but unsuccesful single from late 1967.
CD 2 contains outtakes, alternate versions and 4 songs from Keith Relf and Jim McCarthy's "Together" project.
Most alternate versions are great and as strong as the original album versions.
Of the outtakes the instrumental "De Lane Lea Lee" could have easily been included on the original album, it's song in the same vein as "Glimpses"; most likely it was decided that two songs of that kind would be too much.
"Never Mind" and "You Stole My Love" could also have been great additions, but both obviously are lacking vocals.
"LSD" and the "Great Shakes" commercial are nice to have but nothing special.
The "Together" tracks seem totally out of place here. I would have preferred the 4 songs that were recorded with both Page and Beck.
The "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" / "Psycho Daisies" single, "Stroll On" and "Beck's Bolero" would have been logical choices.
Still I consider this an essential release for any fan of progressive 1960's music.
By the way, it deserves being noted that this 2 CD release contains a great 28 pages booklet with detailed band history, extensive discography, rare photos and notes to each track on the CD's.
The extinction of a species, the birth of an era.......2004-04-10
You cannot just bulk all of their work together in a lump sum and praise or berate as a whole, every incarnation of this band stood alone according to the guitarist of the day. An example is the EC material in comparison to the Beck era material or even the Page era material, all must be listened to as seperate bodies of work or entities, as their guitarists were and are.
This is the only available album of the Jimmy Page line up which at this time was a quartet of Page/Relf/McCarty/Dreja and is as much a real enjoyment as the other albums by this band, so many hints of the future direction of rock is apparent but not necessarily on first listen. That and the fact that this collection is amended with one or two missing classic tracks like 'LSD' or 'You stole my love', and a whole load of crap, from the commercial jingle, to the band "Together" songs,to the last singles this band ever recorded for release 'Good night sweet Josephine', 'Ha Ha said the clown', which are really light-hearted almost second rate Pop/schlock, to the one off cut of 'I remember the night', I still wonder why it was included.
Apart from the fact that Mickie Most was the producer, which is an unfortunate oversight, the fact that many of the singles included to flesh out the package are also an oversight, this band could still rock and rock HARD. Listen to 'Think about it', 'You stole my love', 'No excess baggage', or even 'Tinker, tailor, soldier...,
Evidence of things to come can be heard in the song 'Tinker, tailor.., when you hear the first recorded use of the violin bow during the middle break, or the interesting acoustic workout that is titled 'White Summer' which would reappear on the first LZ as 'Black Mountain Side'.
Its a shame that this album doesn't get better reviews or reactions from the music industry then or now, one interesting fact is that All Music Guide (wether in their book or on their web site) rate this album higher than the studio album with Eric Clapton. As an added aside if you are interseted in this time period than any reader MUST have the latest disc release about this period called "Cumular Limit" which has several songs from this time which were never released or fully developed as songs, a rare find indeed.
Take a While, think about it...a pre Zep glimpse.......2003-05-13
No evaluation of this extraordinary Yardbird-Pre-Zep collector's wet dream can be complete without dishing props to "Think About It". Ever wondered where the climatic rev-up after the bowed segment of Led Zeppelin's version of Jake Holmes'"Dazed and Confused" came from need look no further..here is the Psolo of solos..note for note in its original (albeit mono) glory. Page definetly earned his chops with this stuff and for any Yardbird fan, this comprhensive double decker easily serves up the most interesting Yardbird material just because of it's numerous glimpses to the future when a Zeppelin would rule the next era in rock n roll!

THIS IS THE FINAL WORKS OF THE YARDBIRDS WITH JIMMY PAGE........2007-05-27
A while back, I did a review on the collection of THE YARDBIRDS from 1963 to 1968 which contained very little on the JIMMY PAGE years. Through the years, there has been very little information as well as the music of THE YARDBIRDS which included the JIMMY PAGE era UNTIL NOW. At last, there is a collection which contains all of the music from the final years of THE YARDBIRDS featuring the JIMMY PAGE era.
THE YARDBIRDS will forever go down in history and be remembered for delivering some of Rock's most legendary all-time greatest guitarists ever. Anthony "Top" Topham, Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page would light up the Rock n' Roll world in their own right and have successful solo careers of their own which has lasted up to this very day. However I would like to focus on the final years of THE YARDBIRDS with the final line-up comprising of lead vocalist and frontman, the late great Keith Relf, lead and rhythm guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist Chris Dreja and drummer Jim McCarty. In my opinion, this final YARDBIRDS line-up would mark the final chapter in what was to later come, a new beginning. Listening to these YARDBIRDS songs during the Jimmy Page era does have some similarity to the legendary band that was yet to come, THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. It is also my opinion that the "LITTLE GAMES SESSIONS & MORE" is a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals during what would be the final moments of a great legendary band. "LTTLE GAMES SESSIONS & MORE" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. With this in mind, the "LITTLE GAMES SESSIONS & MORE" also serves as one of the many great contributions, accomplishments and achievements in THE YARDBIRDS long and glorious career.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of THE YARDBIRDS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. THE YARDBIRDS "LITTLE GAMES SESSIONS & MORE" DISC ONE begins with the hard Rockin' Stereo version of "Little Games," the breathtaking hard Rocker "Smile On Me," the guitar solo that would be an early trademark Rocker for the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN, "White Summer," the groundbreaking hard Rocker "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor (Vocal)," the slow hard Rocker "Glimpses (Version 1)," the incredible hard Blues Rocker "Drinking Muddy Water (Stereo Mix)," the amazing acoustic/electric hard Rocker "No Excess Baggage," the slow acoustic Blues Rocker "Stealing Stealing," the beautifully slow acoustic song "Only The Black Rose," the slow acoustic "Little Soldier Boy," the explosive acoustic hard Rocker "Puzzles," the humorous song "I Remember The Night," another humorous song "Ha Ha Said The Clown, the fantastic story told in song form of "Ten Little Indians," the electrifying acoustic hard Rocker which sounds a little like Jimi Hendrix, "Goodnight Sweet Josephine (Version 1)" and the blistering hard driving Rocker "Think About It." End of DISC ONE.
DISC TWO begins with the Mono version of "Little Games," the incredible hard Rocker "You Stole My Love," another acoustic version of "White Summer (Acoustic Version)," the song with no vocals, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor (Instrumental)," the mini song "L.S.D.," the Mono version of "Drinking Muddy Water," a very weird and strange song entitled "De Lane Lea Lee," a different version of "Glimpses (Version 2)," the fast paced hard Rocker "Never Mind," another song with no vocals, "Ten Little Indians (Instrumental)," another version of "Goodnight Sweet Josephine (Version 2)," this is a beautiful acoustic song performed by Keith Relf's band called TOGETHER, "Henry's Coming Home," another beautiful slow acoustic song performed by TOGETHER, "Love Mum And Dad," another beautifully slow acoustic song performed by TOGETHER, "Together Now," a demo containing a slow acoustic song performed by Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, "Shining Where The Sun Has Been" and a YARDBIRDS song that was used in a U.S. commercial spot clocking in a little over a minute, "Great Shakes." End of DISC TWO. May I also add that these final YARDBIRDS sessions may have very well been the finest moments on what would prove to be the last moments of THE YARDBIRDS together. Jimmy page's blistering guitar riffs and licks were definitely sizzlin' and steamin' burning hot on fire while laying down the tracks for these songs. Keith Relf, despite having only one lung, did not show it while laying down the vocals for these songs.
Overall, this is one hell of a collection worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard YARDBIRDS and LED ZEPPELIN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers or new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of THE YARDBIRDS, I would highly suggest that you purchase THE YARDBIRDS "ULTIMATE" collection before you purchase this collection. However, there are many other YARDBIRDS greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you make your final decision as to which album is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own YARDBIRDS music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
I would like to recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless Gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, following the disbanding of THE YARDBIRDS in 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page would try to form another band calling it THE NEW YARDBIRDS comprising of guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist Chris Dreja, lead singer and frontman Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham. Chris Dreja would later depart from the band joining up with other YARDBIRDS alumni and forming another band leaving the vacant bassist position open for John Paul Jones. THE NEW YARDBIRDS would now be changed and called LED ZEPPELIN. And as the saying goes, AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY. Rock n' Roll would lose Keith Relf to his death as a result of being electrocuted by his electric guitar on 14 May 1976, he was only 33 years old. THE YARDBIRDS have forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. Nothing could be more evident than THE YARDBIRDS receiving the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. So here's to you late great Keith, Jimmy, Chris and Jim. KEITH RELF LIVES! Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE YARDBIRDS FOREVER! R.I.P KEITH RELF, Born 22 March 1943, Died 14 May 1976 at age 33. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
