five stars.......2004-02-17
Manifestly this is a popular CD amongst Milwaukeeans, Wisconsin people, and Midwestern regionalists amongst others; the reasons why there was not a sequel et cetera is a complex question and maybe owes something to Reaganomics? Or maybe not. In any case, it is a CD I often throw on when I sit down at the typewriter or computer or drive down the motorway and is the only "Top 40"-type competition I am aware of for Schubert, Strauss, and similar fare for this purpose.

Chase The Clouds is wonderful and many things to many people I would think. The lyrics are delightful and sweet and the music is fantastic. Explored are different aspects of relationshps of various types, and other things too, like "Lazy Day," track no. 10.
Keedy has a gorgeous voice which goes along well with the instrumentation and varied lyrics to make a perfect album. The songs are uplifting, reflective, joyous, sweet, breezy, serious, and other things in different combinations. Unfortunately for all of us, this is the only one she has made so far.
My only disappointment is that the artist didn't make a large number of albums; the album moves effortlessly from light, breezy fare to some poignant pieces which likely remind the listener of an event in life. I remembered the song "Save Some Love" for years because it fit in so perfectly with the situation the first time I heard it, and I was elated to finally find the album recently. "Gettin' Around" is good background music for preparing to call up an old flame or something of the sort, and so on.

my sister had always played this album while driving me to summer school back in the day. so one day recently i had asked her if she remembered it. she didn't. i searched out the title 'lazy day', the only track name i could remember, and found it. i'm glad i did. it's not too bad as far as early 90s pop goes, and she has a nice enough voice. i would recommend it to anyone who's looking for some calm post-freestyle.

Great Taste.......2003-01-21
I bought this CD because of the intelligent eclecticism in the choice of tunes and a fatal addiction to the format of the pianoless quartet. At the time, Allan Chase was foriegn to me. Numerous listenings only made my love for this group grow. The knowing quality of the musicianship never dilutes the vitality of the improvising. Something old, something new. A great addition to the genre. I do hope this quartet records again.

Absorbing stuff.......2002-10-18
This album was a pleasant discovery. The leader on alto/soprano saxophone and Ron Horton on trumpet/flugelhorn comes up with refershing ideas in their solos. Absence of a chordal instrument adds to the clarity of the group's sound. Some familiar tunes (like Hoarce Silver's "Yeah", Gershwin's "Of thee I sing", "East of the Sun")and also two rarely heard songs by Bud Powell are featured here. The harmonically complex title track is composed by Sun Ra. The nod to Ornette Coleman quartet is apparent but this quartet is by no means a poor clone of the original. This also reminded me of Enrico Rava quartet(with a trombone instead of the reeds)in the early eighties. A must buy for all progressive jazz lovers.
I love it. A new take on the piano-less quartet........1999-01-03
In addition to the piano-less quartets Chase mentions, it reminds me, on some occassions, like a curious blend of the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the quartet Chuck Mangione led in the early 1970s before he had his pop success, in terms of the sense of adventurousness and freedom combined with melodicism (and, of course, similar instrumentation). The arrangements are intriguing, the song choices are excellent. The drummer, Matt Wilson, comes up with some fascinating sounds and an interesting approach to soloing, utilizing lots of space. Mr. Chase contributes some fine, harmonically and melodically complex solos on alto. Some good, lyrical flugelhorn soloing as well.

Customer Reviews:
The Chuck Mangione Quartet.......2005-06-24
Boy, what a group. Too bad they were only a group for two albums, or we would of gotten many more gems. This album is fabulous. Most people think Mangione sold out, and when Mangione was confronted with this he replied, "Yes I did. I sold out the Hollywood Bowl, and The Garden!"
But anyone who thinks Mangione's latest efforts are worthless can't un credit Mangione for a great album! This is real jazz! All the musicians are top notch too!
The opener is a great tune. Saw them play it live once. Mangione's electric piano playing is spectacular also. And Gerry Niewood's tenor and soprano solos are just amazing.
He Was A Friend of Mine has always been one of my favorites. Echano is just brilliant. Just when you think it's a slow ballad, they turn it into some marvelous and complex.
No one can dis-claim Mangione of his talents, as a player, writer, etc. They might be jealous of the stardom he recieved, but they can't dis credit him of his achievements.
I like the music Mangione produced all throughout his four decade career, and he's great to see live, especially when he's got great musicians with him. Usually you can catch him with his old time buddy, Gerry Niewood.
An Early Favorite!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-01
The recordings Chuck Mangione made with his quartets in the early 1970's were epivitol! They weren't really deeply enriched in strings, but rather, the quartet was the main attraction. Alive, Bellevia, and this one here are just a few of the gems the MAngione quartets released in the mid and early 70's. The opener, Song Of The New Moon, is a fast lively tune. There is orchestra, but just as background, for the quartet. Usually when a string orchestra plays with a small jazz combo, they drown the jazz band out; not here. Gerry Niewood's sax solo is great here! He really had a unique sound. The next Cant We Do This All NIght, is smoothe, calm, but yet, on fire! Joe Labarbrea's funk drumming style on this one fits the mood perfectly for Niewood and Mangione to solo. Chuck's famous tune, Chase The Clouds Away, is shown here. MAn, for a jaazz group, the musicians here on this album got lucky. They were only on two albums with Chuck, and both times, there was a big hit! The money must of been purin' in! Echano, which also appeared on Children Of Sanches here, is a beautiful piece. Chuck's electric piano is showcased here, as well as Gerry Niewood's alto flute. PErhaps the only drag on the whole album is, Soft. Its got no drums, or nothing. Just some women's voice. Anyway, this is a great album! I am surprised to see this reissue on cd. I just saw a copy in Maces's Close Out Store. Wow! That was a wierd place to find this cd!
Early Mangione Greatness Showing The Best Was Yet to Come.......2003-05-23
This album was the first in a succession of top quality albums released by Mangione between 1975 and 1980. The others were "Bellavia", "Main Squeeze", "Feels So Good", and "Fun and Games". The 1978 "Children of Sanchez" didn't measure up to the quality of his other albums. "Chase the Clouds Away" doesn't have a subpar track and shows the creative genious in Mangione that would further develop in subsequent albums. The title track was nominated in 1975 for a Grammy for Best Instrumental, but lost to the disco tune "The Hustle". To this day, Mangione wears that as a badge of honor.
One of Mangione's Finest.......2000-11-01
I became a fan of Chuck Mangione back in the 1970s when he was doing his best work. He issued an incredible string of great albums up to and including "Children of Sanchez", after which he seemed to lose the magic touch that gave jazz fans heart in that disco-ridden decade. In my opinion, two albums stand out as his best: Main Squeeze and Chase the Clouds Away. I was delighted to find this on CD. Every cut is a gem, from the stirring Song of the New Moon to the Esther Satterfield vocal on Soft. My own favorite is the title cut, a relaxing work of rare beauty that will surely chase your clouds away and give the day a new meaning. The only negative is that the album is way too short.
chase the clouds away.......1999-12-18
This is the cd to buy to get introduced to Mangione style of jazz!. Totally instrumental, with big band sound and full orchestration. I wore out the tape cassete in the 80"s. A very busy sounding jazz cd. You can't go wrong with this great sounding jazz cd.

Customer Reviews:
Where's the beef, Chuck?.......2007-04-01
It is always amusing to me that jazz aficianado's have trouble compromising their taste when it comes to crossover music. Everyone can't be Louis, Clifford or Miles to name a few. Does that mean that the rest of the musical world should drop dead? I don't think so. Appreciation is in the "eye" of the listener. Mangione's group delivers and this album might just "Chase the Clouds Away"!
Melodic Jazz.......2006-02-17
Chuck Mangione has always been one of my favorites, ever since I had the pleasure of meeting him in person when he came to visit our Junior High School in 1971 . . .soon after "Hill Where the Lord Hides" won a Grammy. (Yes, I grew up in and near Rochester, NY--Chuck's hometown). Nice guy, too! He's always been a local legend there, but his international popularity in the mid & late 70's was certainly well-deserved. The music on this CD is timeless, and terrific. You won't go wrong with this. Enjoy!
An old friend.......2005-09-19
I purchased "Chase the Clouds Away" many, many years ago on cassette tape. I recently felt the need to revisit Chuck Mangione and purchased "Chase the Clouds Away" and "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" on compact disc. It is so reassuring that music I was listening to over 20 years ago still has the power to move me and I am so glad that I added this back into my musical collection. My two favorite songs on this c.d. are the title track and "Soft."
A gem that's getting hard to find.......2005-02-09
Why do i never see this in stores? It's one of his best. The band's in a very nice groove throughout, and being a relatively small group, as far as Mangione ensembles go, they're tight. Each song's initial melodic statement is followed by each musician's virtuosic expressive improvisation of the theme. Very 70's, and a real joy to listen to.
