Fantastic Skynyrd CD.......2007-03-08
I love this CD! It gives me happy feet, what can I say. I play it often as I never tire of hearing Skynyrd classic hits.
Pronounced Leonard Skinnard.......2006-12-27
I'm not a fan, but if you are, this is a good collection. I like the Allman Brothers better (and yes, I know they are a blues band). I bought this to learn "You've Got That Right" for my band. If the Eagles or The James Gang are considered Southern Rock, and that is your odyssey, check them out first. Sacrilege, I know.
The Definitive Collection.......2006-12-18
This CD is all you really need from Lynyrd Skynrd. It contains 14 of their greatest songs and each one is a classic. There are no fillers on this album. It's filled with hit after hit of some of the best southern rock ever recorded. All of the songs are classics as I said but one song that I'm happy that they included in this collection is "All I Can Do Is Write About It" (acoustic version). This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The words are simple and yet deeply moving and powerful. Listen to this song carefully and it will touch your heart like it did mine. The CD opens with what is probably one of the most famous songs in the classic rock pantheon "Sweet Home Alabama". This one is considered to be a rock n'roll anthem and I completely agree. Overall this is an album that every fan of classic rock should not be without. This is Lynyrd Skynyrd at their very best and beyond.
great cd.......2006-11-10
able to listen to the whole cd without having to skip any songs, great cd!!
Still Rockin' After All These Years.......2006-11-03
Music is like art.....I don't know much about it, but I know what I like, and I like "All Time Greatest Hits"...a lot!! It's classic sing-along standards to which we all know the words. Just like on the old Dick Clark American Bandstand shows..."It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it". Of course you can mop floors to it, and drive to it, and have the other drivers wonder why you look so spastic, but best of all you can just enjoy the songs. To a southern girl.....uh, old broad.....this is true southern rock and roll. I was rockin' with Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the '70's and I'm still rocking with them 30 years later.

Customer Reviews:
Great but Still Wanted More.......2007-06-27
First, I do not like the cover. But beyond that, the CD is great fun to listen to. John Denver had so many hits, that this doesn't cover all of them by any means, but it is a great CD to take you back to a more peaceful time musically. It makes me want to bring out my guitar and play along.
TRUELY a song's best friend!.......2007-05-28
what else can i say? at 36, and i grew up in a strictly religious household, so i missed him growing up, but i got spots going into public places & whatnot. i remember a vacation while young in the WV woods when one of his most popular songs was on the radio & i memorized it the first time i heard it and sung it to myself time and time again, while walking through the woods or horse back riding- just enjoying nature. he has a way of giving you nature and the beauty of it in a song. God gave us such as one as him so we could stop and remember the beauty of all that is around us all the time.
John Denver definative all time greatest hits.......2007-05-26
This must be the best John Denver of all, it has the lot
All of John Denver's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-23
John Denver passed away in October, 1997 while piloting a small airplane. Before that, he left an indelible mark on the pop music industry. By combining harmonic vocals with a recognizable acoustic sound, John's music still remains popular with fans of all ages.
From the autobiographical "Rocky Mountain High" to the melodic and uplifting "Calypso", this collection contains many of John's most famous songs. Other selections include "Annie"; a song John wrote for his wife, "Take me Home, Country Roads", and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy".
I wasn't a big fan of John Denver before I bought this CD, but I really enjoy listening to his music now. This is the perfect disc for the casual fan, because all of his most popular hits are on it; there's no need to buy several other discs to get them.
I give this great collection my highest recommendation. If you're a major fan or just a casual fan, then this is the CD you'll want to own.

As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B. The Grass Roots may have been product, but what great product. --Rob O'Connor
Album Description
This low-priced disc is far & away the best single-CD compilation ever issued of the Grass Roots' work, 16 chart singles covering every phase of their history, from 1966's 'Where Were You When I Needed You' (in its actual hit version) thru 'Let's Live for Today' & 'Midnight Confessions' to their last hit, 1972's 'The Runway.' Originally released in 1996. MCA.
Customer Reviews:
Great CD!.......2007-05-26
This will certainly take you back in time. The Grassroots had so many hits and they are all here and are the original versions that you heard on the radio! My personal favorite is "The River Is Wide", which gets very little airplay on oldies radio stations. If you are a Grassroots fan, you will not be disappointed.
Grass Roots 2007.......2007-05-08
Just saw the Grass Roots(Grill and others) at the Sellersville Theater, in Sellersville, PA. He was using a cane but still sounded great. This takes me back to my childhood days and listening to the sound bites on this CD I am amazed how well he still sounds. I really recommend you buy this one. He also has a great stage presence and really interacted with the crowd. I would definitely recommend anyone who enjoyed this band in their youth to take time to see them. Yes, even after all these years! The crowd is small, personal and you won't regret it. He even cut a live CD in 2000 that he sells on tour.
POP MUSIC DELUXE = GRASS ROOTS style !.......2007-04-26
Well, what a great CD. Listen, I remember sitting in the backseat of my parents car, I was about 10 or 11 yrs old, listening to KLIF AM radio, Dallas. Hearing The Grass Roots songs through those cheap GM Chevy speakers was almost as good as ice-cream. I had just started playing drums (thanks, Ringo), and the Grass Roots songs propelled me even more. (I am going somewhere with this). Later, in the 80's, I went to a Texas Rangers baseball game where Herman's Hermits, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Monkees and The Grass Roots were playing a special show after the game. Well, I will say this, they were all good, but the stand-out (BY FAR) was Rob Grill and whatever Grass Roots band was performing with him. He KILLED the crowd, and let me tell you, those songs sounded as good as they did when I was sitting in the backseat of the car many years before. Get this CD. As a drummer, I've always wondered if Hal Blaine was playing drums on this CD. Hmmmmm. Anyone know for sure? (Hal was a monster drummer in the 60's and played on everything for everyone).
You will listen to this CD for a very long time. POP PERFECTION that STILL sounds GREAT!
An unknown tidbit about "The Grass Roots".......2007-03-28
before American Bandstand had a song "written" for them (by none other than Barry Manilow!) the theme song for American Bandstand was "Midnight Confessions" by The Grass Roots!
Now, I dare you say The Grass Roots weren't an important musical group! Before MTV, American Bandstand was the BOMB!
A definite blast from the past.......2007-03-09
If you remember and loved the Grassroots, you will still love them.

Very good piece of music history. I still like the LP's sound a bit better then CD's due to some of the characteristic noise flaws but unfortunately LP's do not play in the car.
Born to be Reflective.................2007-02-05
Oh-What a weekend it has been. As you know-your beloved Seer is snowbound and has had to find worthy things to do. Seems, after a few hot toddys and relaxing (watching the glow in the fireplace), disaster struck! A wayward ember landed of my non-flame retardent Seer's cape, and your mild Seer had to run screaming, into the snow, to remedy the situation. It was a classic "non-Metamorpho" moment. One that I'm not proud of. But, the good news is that the hot toddys kicked in and I forgot (almost) totally about that charlatan in the southern mid-west. And since I recently raided my archives to find another worthy selection- I decided that another review was in order.
Keeping on with rockin' selections - I have a most worthy biker fest celebration for all of you. Yes, it's Steppenwolf and John Kay as the master of ceremonies! Even as we speak- Metamorpho is getting out his shades and revving up his magic carpet to take journeys into the unknown. (Some say "Stay in your own mind Metamorpho, that is unknown enough for you"). I scoff at that. Wouldn't you?
So, what have we here? Gritty, husky, distictive vocals by John Kay. Motorcycles, motorcycle mamas, social commentary, political barbs and superb rock construction. Oh yes- and sex too. Guido would definitely approve. Steppenwolf was always a male-dominated dominion. However, political correctness aside - the music was just too damn good to give it a bad rap.
Of course we have here the great eternal staples of "Born to Be Wild" (is it really about riding a bike?) and "Magic Carpet Ride" (John Kay as house genie for sure). These songs reveal the elements which many songs afterwards would often employ. The musky organ grinding on one side and the guitar riffing on the other. All in the mix. All other instruments contribute- however, along with John's vocals, this was the "sound" of Steppenwolf.
Also, don't think that they weren't diverse. They could do a rock stroll like "Don't Step On the Grass, Sam" (anti-government) and "The Pusher" (anti-hard drug). Rock raves like "Rock Me" and "Hey Lawdy Mama". And soft rock ballads like "Snowblind Friend" (cocaine addiction) and "Tenderness" (abusive love relationships). Steppenwolf's song topics were not shallow or void of diversity, as we can see. A song in this compilation that I find quite good is "Screaming Night Hog". Listen to the interplay of instruments on this song. Amazing. They hit a groove and never let up. Listen to the guitar riff- the mirroring of the organ, the harmonica riff. The see-saw effect of the mix. Listen to this one loud.
Last, but not least, the incredible tri-umphant "Monster/Suicide/America".
John Kay's history lesson with tough questions indeed. An incredible work. One section seguing into another with their own distinctive pattern. The blend only adds to the urgency of the message. And, what about the message? Precise, clear, and as evident today as it was when it was written. Seems some things never change.
For anyone who loves rock - this collection is indispensible. Miss this one at your peril (mind you, stray embers are everywhere these days).
I guess that's it for now children. I have to now get busy formulating my Seer's lesson plan for T. He's doing well on tests though- but getting a B+ on the last one gave your beloved Seer great concern.
Ah well--
Remembering the embering -------- Metamorpho
Super Remaster.......2007-01-16
I must say that I'm totally baffled by the reviewer who bitterly complains about the sound quality. I've owned various Steppenwolf hit compilations, and most of the albums they were derived from, and this is better, by far, than anything I've owned before. They even resisted the urge to jack up the volume. The jacked up volume scourge has ruined the dynamic range of many remasters and new issues in the last 7-10 years. This was exactly what I'd been waiting for - a great sounding Steppenwolf compilation with a song selection that I like.
I still wait for the cd.......2006-11-12
Until the moment the cd didn't still arrive.
What do make?
How can I trace?
Respectfully,
Mirtes Marins

A towering figure in postwar American music, for over 40 years James Brown has written, produced, and performed some of the most compelling R&B ever recorded. 20 All Time Greatest Hits! distills Startime!, itself a four-CD set that barely scratched the surface of Brown's prodigious output. As such, this collection concentrates on Brown's best-known records: "I Feel Good," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "Cold Sweat." The propulsive one- or two-chord vamps with Brown's hoarse, declamatory vocals laid the groundwork for modern funk. It's a perfect starter set for anyone unfamiliar with Brown's work. But be warned--Brown is addictive. Like peanuts and potato chips, it's impossible to stop with just one. Buy this and don't be surprised if one day you find yourself scouring used record bins for a rare copy of Grits and Cornbread. --Steven Mirkin
Customer Reviews:
Nice Hits Package.......2007-05-16
More James Brown than most casual fans need, but the price is right for the extra cuts. Look up funk in the dictionary -- it says James Brown!
Git On Uppa.......2007-05-09
This CD arrived on a Saturday before my husband and I started out on one of our weekend joy rides ( At over $3.20 a gallon there is just slightly less joy). We slipped the disc in and right from the very opening notes we were possessed. What a performer. We nearly had to pull the car over and start dancing, we COULD NOT sit still.
I love it when Brown gets so worked up he literally squeals with excitement, it send chills up your spine. I would think that listening to this CD would be more effective than medication for the manic depressive personality.
Pretty Much of Historical Interest Only.......2007-04-14
I found James Brown fairly boring back in the day, and I must admit I still find him fairly boring. Back then though I couldn't have predicted that this kind of music would evolve into fusion or Steely Dan pop. It's probably a large exaggeration to say that James Brown and his musicians invented funk, but it may be reasonable to say that they were its chief--or most visible at least--exemplars.
The instrumental parts are of much more interest than James Brown's quasi-parlando, repetitive vocals. The sound quality is generally better than I expected, and the instrumental parts are generally performed cleanly, but the horns are a bit off in "Make it Funky". There is another tune here in which it sounds as if a horn section crescendo is achieved artificially by riding the faders (on the mixing board)--a disagreeable effect.
These must be some of the silliest lyrics ever written, and I find "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" especially amusingly ridiculous. "Try Me" is supposed to be James Brown's breakthrough tune, but it sounds to me like an utterly conventional, undistinguished fifties recording. At least three of these tracks are essentialy one piece with differing lyrical snippets.
Definitely a must have!.......2007-04-12
I have been enjoying James Brown for over 50 years.
This CD contains MOST of the songs that I have loved and danced to for years. An excellent collection. Whew!
james brown rules.......2007-04-05

The Platters were perhaps the top group of the 50s with such huge hits as "Only you," "Smoke gets in your eyes," "the Great Pretender," "Red sails in the sunset," "Smoke gets in your eyes," etc. Those of you who loved American Graffiti probably noticed the presence of Platters hits on the radio as the teenagers drove around the California town all night long.
The personel has changed over the years. Only 4 people are now allowed to bill themselves as the Platters. Herb Reed ( a bassist), Sonny Turner,(lead vocalist), Zola Taylor (female vocalist) and Monroe Powell (vocalist)
According to the Herb Reed and the Platters web site, the Platters have recorded almost 400 songs. How many were hits? A large number to say the least. The Platters, of course, are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have appeared in many movies.[...]
old timer in Alabama.......2007-01-09
This is an exceptional album if you grew up in the 60's and 70's. Brought back many memories and is an excellent dance record. I play quite a bit and thoroughly enjoy every time I play. Great Selection!!!
I had to buy one for my sister and a friend.
A Great Memory ! ! !.......2006-11-10
Wow, what great memories with this music......1955/56 in the army listening to "The Great Pretender" and others in the local pubs around Hackensack, N.J.....if you could only go back in time.
Excellente!.......2006-03-12
'p d harris' said everything there is to say.... but I'd just like to agree with him.
Fabulous fabulous cd. I can't stop listening to it. *swoon*

Dionne Warwick's vocals were never more strong, more vulnerable than when she sang the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David--and, oh, yeah, "Who Can I Turn To" and the theme from "Valley of the Dolls," the two non-Bacharach/David songs included among the 24 singles collected here. Both technically and emotionally, this was an unstoppable team: from the drama of "Don't Make Me Over" to the tongue-in-cheek backing singers on "Are You There (With Another Girl)," the barely veiled civil-rights message of "Reach Out for Me" to the deceptively bouncy "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," this CD sheds light on one of the most perfect marriages of pop form and content this side of Sinatra's classic Capitol work. --Rickey Wright

Bacharach / David and Warwick.......2007-06-14
First of all I brought this album about four years ago.Every now and then when I"m feeling a bit nostalgic I"ll give it a play.So the other day when I was feeling a bit nostalgic I put the album in my CD player. And while I was listening to it I decided to put a few words about it down on paper.Very few musical collaborations have been as successful as the team of Bacharach,David and Warwick. The music that these three people produced had such a strong impact on the music of the 60"s.And the impact is stillcontinuing to some degree to this day.Hardly a day goes by that you don"t hear at least one of these songs on tv or on the radio.Mr Burt Bacharach the brilliant composer seem to be able to pick beautiful melodies out of thin air.Mr Hal David the lyrical genius,he just had a way with words. And last but not least the golded voice of Ms Dionnie Warwick. What a great team. The great songs on this album are just to numerous to mention one by one.So I"m just going to name a few of my favorites. They are 'The April Fools","Walk On By","Reach Out For Me","Promises Promises","I Say A Little Prayer" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart".The arrangements of these songs still sound great. But over the years Mr Bacharach as redone some of them,on his own and with other people. And given them a more modern sound. And Ms Warwick still sings some of them as part of her stage show. And who can blame her, these songs are masterpieces. What I like most about this album is,you get the full version of each song.No song is cut short. So if you like the music of the 60"s this is the album for you.It has all the hits on it.And it"s just great music to listen to.Here"s to the good old days.
I bought it...and I'd buy it again.......2007-05-31
This is a comprehensive double-CD collection of Dionne's AM radio hits from the 60's. I just as strongly recommend Dionne as the foremost interpreter of Burt Bachrach's music.
The sound quality is great. Rhino Records did a nice job, in this area, and the liner notes provide a good bit of information. Dionne's performances of these songs are flawless. She has great range and feeling, as well as subtlety and restraint. "Windows of the World," for example, sends a shiver up my spine. The hasty "San Jose'" is also a treat. The quantity of music presented is more than enough; you won't hear any 60's Warwick song on the radio not presented here, although this results in some unevenness. Burt Bachrach's composition is super.
I couldn't give it 5 stars because some of the musical arrangements don't hold up well, and probably sounded schlocky when they came out, even over the tinny radio speaker of a 1966 Ford Fairlane on its way to San Jose. But you know that going in. Lyricist Hal David was most effective when he kept it spare and light ("Walk On By"), not when he tried to communicate socially "relevant" ideas (e.g. - "Message to Michael" - mobile society; "Windows of the World" - Vietnam). Not every song on the collection is to my taste. It's hard to find enough great material to fill a double greatest hits album, but most of this is quite good. Anyone who likes Dionne's 60's radio hits or needs a comprehensive sampling of Bachrach-David at their creative peak, should look here. (Adapted from my review of 12/20/1999.)
great songs, great singer.......2007-05-07
These are the hits she had in the sixties and early seventies, mostly Bacharach-David tunes, all original recordings. Excellent compilation, another one my wife has borrowed, passing the wife test. Don't "Walk On By" this collection, if you enjoy good music, and all her big hits of that era.
IT IS OKAY.......2007-03-09
THIS CD HAD MORE SONGS THAT I HAD NOT HEARD THAN THE ONES I WAS FAMILIAR WITH. IT'S A GOOD CD FOR DIE HARD DIONNE FANS, NOT JUST ONES THAT LIKE A FEW OF HER SONGS.
Pop Perfection.......2007-01-10
Whoever it was that pointed out, "Man cannot live by bread alone," certainly had a nice flair for aphorisms. Even the most demented audiophile, subsisting on a diet of Blue Cheer, Albert Ayler, Vanilla Fudge, and Sun Ra; occasionally feels a strange desire to be soothed by something that is, for want of a better word, nice. The demented audiophile must be careful at such moments, lest the pendulum swing horribly far to the opposite extreme. For example, many demented audiophiles have been banned from the best jazz clubs for life simply because they let it slip that, in moments of weakness, they played something by Barbra Streisand and actually enjoyed it.
The horror!
Fortunately for the demented audiophile, this Greatest Hits of Dionne Warwick is readily available. This CD is pop perfection, the synergy of Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Dionne Warwick is breathtaking. If you're lucky enough to have been raised on these classics cranking out of car radios, you'll be thrilled to hear them in their full acoustic glory - the sound quality is crystalline. Most noticeable is how good the arrangements are, and how disciplined. These songs were composed and recorded in an era when it was fashionable to goop up good music with massive banks of intrusive strings, pouring down like waterfalls of molten Velveeta cheese and smothering the quality. Considering this is pop fare - aimed squarely at the Top 40 - (remember that?) - the arrangements are wonderfully subdued, they actually enhance the beauty.
As to Ms. Warwick; a very soulful, emotional singer able to evoke feeling from the smallest lilt and a nicely turned phrase. A subtle, brilliant talent. I don't think I could ever hear Walk On By or You'll Never Get To Heaven too many times. Although, being a card-carrying demented audiophile, I must admit that there's something about hearing Roland Kirk play You'll Never Get To Heaven. Maybe Ellington was right, there are really only two kinds of music - good music and bad music. This CD is good music, real good.

Gene Pitney - 25 All-Time Greatest Hits.......2007-06-13
Great CD, brings back alot of good memories
perfect album.......2007-05-24
This is the most perfect album I ever have from Gene Pitney so far, the finest recordings with a fair price tag too. Most of the tracks brought back memories of my younger days. As a matter of facts, I only heard a few of his most hits like Town without pity, Man who shot Liberty Valance, 24 hours from Tulsa, It hurts to be in love, Only love can break a heart and Something's gotten hold of my heart over the radio airwaves in the early sixties. So this 25 All time greatest hits I thought only a few tracks like I mentioned above were all I wanted, To my surprise most of the tracks are wonderful. For those who need a relaxation listening pleasure, take my opinion. Peter Lee
great collection.......2007-05-07
This is truly the all-time greatest hits of Gene Pitney, all original recordings, that's very important. A truly underappreciated singer, whom we lost too soon, and now even my wife takes this CD on the road with her. It passed her test, too.

This Seattle-based band was formed from the ashes of the incredibly talented Carissa's Wierd [sic], whose mopey and self-deprecating songs were like some magical and baroque combination of the Magnetic Fields, Cat Power, and Leonard Cohen. Longtime friends of Iron and Wine, few fans in their native Pacific Northwest could understand why Carissa's weren't huge. But they weren't, and after three albums and few folks really caring, they naturally broke up. Band of Horses, led by ultra-charming CW bassist Ben Bridwell, is a remarkably different, though just as radically excellent, brand of indie-pop sulk. These songs are anthems to ambivalence, and Bridwell's lovely high-pitched trill will please any fan of Built to Spill, the Shins, and Modest Mouse. It takes a few listens to sink in, but Everything is transcendent, shimmering, layered, and smartass emo-pop fully ready for stadium saturation. --James Conde
Album Description
Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and bassist Mat Brooke formed Band Of Horses in 2004 after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band Of Horses rises from those ashes. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which channel a strange brew of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, and Doug Martsch), the group's woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing, and hope. Both raggedly epic and delicately pensive, this is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

Awesome Album.......2007-07-19
I had heard one song from this band and fell in love with it. The rest of the album was just as good and well worth the purchase.

This is an excellent album full of beautiful songs that will get stuck in your head.

EATT was my favorite album of 2006. BoH is so much better than MMJ it's ridiculous.
Great melody........2007-05-27
Real nice album. Could use some guitar solos and there is so much room for it on this album. Maybe next time around? This band will only get better with age. Like a good linberger cheeze! Say cheeeeezzzzzze!
good, but NOT great.......2007-04-04
music is like built to spill, without any guitar explorations. its a straight "by the book" rock album, which is good but not great. vocals are heavy on the reverb. a mix between perry farrell and jim james , which is good but not great. i like the disc, and i play it often. its a great disc for a debut album though, and a good buy!! i have a feeling their next album will be great, BUT its on themselves to do something original and stop being someone else.

Not as good as expected.......2007-07-01
About 25% of the cuts on this CD are very obscure, not even hitting the top 50 on the charts, a couple above the top 100. The groups listed on the front of the case and the labels on the back show the best of the CD. They don't show the unknowns or little knowns. I question whether some should even be listed as bubble gum music, but that doesn't diminish their quality. There are 25 songs, but I liked only 18 at best. Look closely at the list of songs before buying.
Nostalgic bee bop bubblegum rock.......2007-03-08
What is it about these 2 minute songs that makes you want to find them, buy them and play them again and again. Could it be that the light headed lyrics can actually be heard, or is it that the catch tunes simply rekindle the past when life as a youth was full of so much promise and - i had a head full of hair - its the latter i think, and this albums collection of songs rekindles that old spirit as though it was all happening again. A particularly "lekker" compilation - but whatever happened to Tracy .............. ba ba papapa ba papapa ba
It is the Ultimate Bubblegum Collection!.......2007-01-27
This was another cd I had a hard time not playing over and over. It had some cool songs on it that I had been looking for on cd and just never did. It's a great compilation with a lot of songs!
Another Album you will want for your collection........2007-01-08
Compiling a great collection requires having all of the songs that made the past in music history. This album has songs that you just don't find on the normal "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits By".
I didn't know I liked "Bubblegum" until I heard this collection.......2006-08-28
