Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

91 tracks deep and five hours long, this multi-artist, 4CD set mines rare, renowned, legendary, and little-known grooves from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, and Warner Bros Records!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mm-hmm! I can smell that funky music!.......2007-06-18

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

Long live the funk baby!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

4 out of 5 stars Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to."

5 out of 5 stars Unwind with this..........2007-03-26

Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.

5 out of 5 stars A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25

I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10

Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10

David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

5 out of 5 stars JUST WONDERFUL!!!.......2004-05-17

THIS IS GREAT! WORDS JUST CAN'T EXPRESS MY EXCITMENT WHEN I FOUND THIS ALBUM. MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE ONES I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR SINCE FOREVER! I'D HEAR IT ON THE RADIO AND WONDER HOW I CAN FIND IT, NOW I HAVE

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for finding hard to locate songs.......2004-02-20

I am a fan of this series as it often is the only place to find old school classics. Songs that were popular back in the day, but by either one-hit-wonders, or artists with out of print recordings. This CD is the only place I could find "Firestarter" by Tease, and "Sugar Free" by Juicy. I also enjoyed "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright and "Come into My Life" by Joyce Sims. This collection is from a day when slow jams were more than just the whining you hear on the radio today. There was rhythm, there was funk, there was soul.

5 out of 5 stars very smooth!!!!.......2003-07-31

A very nice selcetion of songs that are nice there is a song by Eugene Wilde who was popular in the 80's but he didn't get a lot of exposure who is a good singer he has a song on here called don't say no tonight and firestarter, I'm curious, Silver Shadow, Slow down and many other great songs and I would recommend anyone to buy this album I am almost finish with completing the whole collection of smooth grooves but this is a nice cd to add to your romance cds!!!

4 out of 5 stars A fine anthology of the songs that helped define the "Quiet Storm" sound........2003-06-11

Most of the songs included on this great compilation deservedly became Quiet Storm classics. "Firestarter" (Tease), "Gotta Get You Home Tonight" (Eugene Wilde), "Silver Shadow" (Atlantic Starr), "Come Into My Life" (Joyce Sims) and "Sugar Free" (Juicy) still sound great after all these years. I did NOT give these otherwise-superb CD a 5-star rating because the songs by Oddysey and Reel To Real do not belong on a Quiet Storm-oriented anthology. If you are a fan of 1980s R&B, however, you shouldn't pass this CD up. I also like the front and back inserts' photos also.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Smooth Grooves.......2003-03-27

This is without doubt one of the finest in the Smooth Grooves series. A good mix of laid back soul (Juicy, Tease, Keni Burke) and smooth dancers (Bernard Wright, Odyssey, Atlantic Starr). Lots of the tracks here have had a hammering on my soul radio show, and feedback has been excellent. Do yourselves a favour, if you've not purchased this yet, don't waste time putting it on your wants list, get it now.

Though best remembered as the act whose "Fantastic Voyage" was transmogrified into Coolio's mid-'90s plea for urban peace, Ohio-based funksters Lakeside deserve to be recalled for more. For instance, their album covers usually pictured them in some movie-inspired getup or another--see 1982's Untouchables, which even backed up its Capone-era gangster concept for more than one song. This collection gets a little dull when they slow down, except for an inspired ballad rendition of the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand." But if you're looking for something entertaining to complement your James Brown, P-Funk, and Earth, Wind & Fire discs, you could do worse. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, But not enough.......2007-07-03

I am a big fan of Old School Funk (Lakeside, Cameo, Con Funk Shun)and I was slightly disappointed with this "best of" compilation. It doesn't give you the full length versions of "All The Way Live" (I had to wait for Solar to put out a re-issue of "Shot Of Love" for that) and they tore up one of the most original remakes of a Beatles song EVER MADE!! "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was given a ballad makeover by these guys and it works (if the record company only let the WHOLE SONG play!!). For those reasons I give it 4 stars. It is still a good sampling of how FUNKY, TIGHT and AWESOME Lakeside IS!!!

Wow. I have never reviewed an album before but after reading all of the glowing remarks I thought I would share my two cents. I purchased the album for one song and one song only. It was for the digital version of the Beatles remake of "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

After listening to the CD twice, I thought wow that falsetto does not sound like Otis Stokes. So I brought out my album and then it hit me, they substituted singers. On the original the lead in to the falsetto sung by Otis Stokes goes "sing it to me Otis" but not on this CD.

This CD is NOT a pure reissue of the original music.

THIS IS A GOOD DISC. I ENJOY LAKESIDE'S MUSIC. IF YOU LIKE LAKESIDE YOU WOULD LIKE THIS DISC. IT CONATINS ALL OF MY FAVORITE SONGS BY LAKESIDE. IT CONTAINS ALL OF THE CLASSICS: FANTASTIC VOYAGE, REAL LOVE, YOUR LOVE IS ON THE ONE, IT'S ALL THE WAY LIVE, OUTRAGEOUS, RAID, AND MANY GREAT OTHER SONGS BY THEM. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF LAKESIDE YOU WOULD DEFINITELY ENJOY THIS ALBUM IT IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY LAKESIDE FAN.

5 out of 5 stars Lakeside was always funky! Hot album!!!.......2004-08-29

I was surprised to see this album out! Lakeside had all these incredible songs like Fantastic Voyage, Raid, Your Love Is on The One, It's all the Way Live (still my favorite), Say YEs and others! They had some hot rhythm sections in their songs. One of the standouts is their nice remake of the Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand, done in a slow R&B fashion! For them to come out of Ohio is quite something as that state has produced all these hot funk bands such as the Ohio Players, Slave, Isley Brothers and others! All these songs are classics to me!

5 out of 5 stars Romanticizing The Grit of the City.......2006-08-03

This isn't daiseys and clover but it has a pulse of its own. I love all kinds of music (but not all music). This is a nice blend of hip hop, smooth jazz, with a little touch of up tempo lounge music. There is a lot of variety of groove here. I stumbled on this CD. Sometimes you find great things when you aren't really looking for it. Add this one to your collection. You will find it will work in a lot of settings from Saturday afternoon, a lead in to an evening that will eventually get quiet and romantic, to something to listen to in the car coming home from work.

i had randomly bought the CD in the store and when i got it home & put it in the CD player i had never been so pleaseantly surprised with a Jazz CD before. I usually don't buy jazz because to me it's normally a long drawn out process but i really liked this album and it encouraged me to buy more jazz albums like it.

5 out of 5 stars It "JAMS" The House of Urban Grooves Jazz.......2005-11-14

It hits that "RHYTHM" for inner city feeling and movement. The kind of music you want to "groove" with while you're driving are thinkiing about the cosmopolitan things of life. If you like "hip" buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Jams!.......2005-04-14

I bought this on a whim and it was the best purchase I have made in years! Some songs are sexy, some relaxing and smooth, others are ultra funky and fun! Some have vocals and some don't. The songs flow into one another. "Howard's In" should be in a movie (maybe it was?) with its changing moods - starting with a flowing piano over a strong beat that continues until that funky sax takes its turn, finally ending with the quiet beat blending into the next song. It makes me think of a psychological thriller! Love this!

4 out of 5 stars Julie Dexter is smooth!.......2007-06-08

Very nice and soft sound. I have recommended the "Conscious" CD to many friends. She has a very peaceful voice and it's very easy on the ear. Give her a listen and you'll like her too.

Julie's a smooth operator. This is a very nice CD of her work. She's as good on CD as in person. Enjoy it.

And this album is a big and pleasant surprise!

5 out of 5 stars A travesty that she's overlooked!.......2006-10-04

My oh my, how could the music world overlook this deep talent? Conscious is soul (not neo-soul, just soul) at it's finest. It is so refreshing when an artist comes along who can sing from the heart and who realizes the importance of top notch musicianship and Julie Dexter certainly fits the bill. After listening to this CD, you're left with a real sense of soul refreshment. You'd better appreciate this sista now!

P.s., I met Julie in person and she's truly a cool sista, just like her music.

Julie Dexter has also done concerts with a group called Fertile Ground. Make it your business to buy both if you can. Drum beats, reggae vibes, and sultry sounds all included in the Conscious CD. This is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Compalation That Takes You Back.......2005-10-18

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 7 is another amazing set of classic slow jams. Volume 7 mainly deals with songs all concering some form of heartbreak. Sukiyaki,Love On A Two Way Street, Tears, Toast To The Fool are all truthfully with heartbreaking harmonies and ever singer is in top form. The song that stands out the most to me to Try Again by Champagin. The song is dire need of a remake by a capable artist like Jon B. or Brian Mcknight. Other stand out tracks include the classic baby maker Love You Down By Ready For The World. So light some candles, burn some inscense and break out the starwberries and go back to a time when love was love.

My favorites are: Dreamboy-Don't Go

5 out of 5 stars Just the right CD for that special date.......2003-08-25

This one has the perfect collection of love songs. I remember Sukiyaki when it was first done in Japanese. They used to play it so frequently on the radio. I thought it was a beautiful song since I didn't know what they were really saying. When Taste Of Honey transalated it back in 1981, I saw it was about a love gone sour. The original singer did not ask for his rights to the translated version even though Taste Of Honey offered it to him. Try Again is also a great song that brings back memories. Yes, the group Champaign is from Champaign, IL.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made.......2003-12-04

Even if you don't even like anything that has to do with Jazz this album will definetly appeal to you. I didn't listen to jazz at all, but mostly electronic and club music like Antiloop or Fatboy Slim. Guess what? Once I put this disc in my cd player it was stuck there for a whole week! I just couldn't stop listening. The songs are so different and they all have strong and good melodies. One of the best albums ever made in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Imprescindible si de verdad te gusta la música.......2003-01-27

3 out of 5 stars Life On Planet Groove.......2003-01-05

I had initially began this review of Down To The Bone's sophmore disc " Urban Grooves II " with the title heading " Music for the Tragically Hip " but thought far better of it. While bearing in mind other Amazon.com reader's obvious enjoyment of this CD this listener had a rather difficult time digesting this disc in one sitting/listen. Well, beyond the obvious misguided attempt to present themselves in an overly urban/oh-so-cool manner this disc simply gets on my nerves perhaps more than any recent CD that I've purchased.

Don't misunderstand me....I too have been a long time fan of this style of jazz for many years. Musicians such as Donald Byrd, Herbie Mann or the early Crusaders practiced this style of jazz with mixed results but it was very enjoyable and ultimately rewarding in bringing in listener's to this genre. That being said I found the majority of what's to be heard on this disc patently phony in it's all too eager desire cast iself as 'urban chic' and in trying to maintain some type of street-creed amongst younger listener's. You can call it 'jazz lite' or anything else you please but simply by virtue of having saxophone, flute or any other wind instrument in your song's does not a jazz CD make. The tunes to be found here go on far too long i.e." The Zodiac " clocking in at a lengthy, mind-numbing 8 minutes. Which, in most cases would be fine if the song actually went somewhere but sadly it just constantly repeats itself on and on ad naseum until it mercifully dies off. And, after attempting to listen to the other tracks to be found, all of them rewarding the buyer with the same self-absorbed thumping groove and heavy
bass beat on song after song....after song I found myself throwing up my hands. Leaving this listener exhausted and looking for his stereo's on/off switch...plus the nearest bottle of Excedrin.

I, as a rule, would never cast aspertions of any other listerner's taste in music but I have to wonder how so many music lover's could find this style of rehashed, overly produced and, at times, even child-like melodies more than just slightly entertaining. Do Stuart Wade and Chris Morgans, the Brit duo who produce DTTB and are it's source of inspiration, truly have their fingers on the pulse of what young jazz listener's really enjoy or are they just market savvy enough to be able to promote their product to young suburban white consumer's who share in some misguided longings in their desire to be "hip" " cool" or even "urban." Make no mistake, like it or not, just like anything else in the vast world, this is simply a product and knowing how to market and thusly promote that product is sadly just as important as the contents to be found therein. And, again sadly, that also pertains to today's music business as well. And this duo has done an admirable job of fobbing off to any unsuspecting listener/consumer a product that is neither fresh or, for that matter, even truly current in today's music industry.

Ultimately, while " Urban Grooves II " may appear to perhaps be paying hommage to the jazz greats mentioned above I suspect that is simply not the case. Disguising yourself as some type of jazz afficionado is bad enough but when you attempt to market that enthusiasm to susceptible, at times even impressionable young music lover's, not only is that disengenuous but even reprehensible as well. (But apparently it is profitable seeing how well this duo's CD's are flying off the shelf.) Trying to associate yourself, simply by having photograph's of the Crusader's, Airto and other jazz giants in this field on the back cover of your disc, simply won't grant you entry into the field of jazz. That's like stating that Sade ( a fine singer in her own way ) is this generation's answer to Ella or Billie Holiday. It's going to take more than just recycled grooves and a few photo's of urban record stores plus the occassional jazz lick here and there to truly grant you that entrance. When 'Down To The Bone' has done some homework, payed some dues and learned some real chops perhaps I'll be back. 'Tragically hip' who's to say. But for now I think I'll pass.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Funk!.......2002-04-14

Yes, I'll add my voice to the chorus -- the disk rocks from start to finish. If not for a visit to the States one day and fortunately hearing them on the radio (a college station specialising in jazz) and then luckily catching the artist's name -- I'd never have known about these guys. This is one of today's music's best kept secrets, but hopefully not much longer. For those who've yet to hear them, it's very difficult to compare this sound to anything else I've heard. A jazzy feel with a strong danceable bottom -- Brass Construction or Wood, Brass and Steel (from the 70's) come close, but not quite.

If asked to pick favourite tracks, I'll go with "Long Way from Brooklyn", "The Zodiac", "Joy Is a Good Groove", and "Bump 'n' Hustle". Some of them are so good you just want to put the player on repeat -- but don't, because the next track is just as good. Pretty rare these days to get a disk where you like every cut, but this is it. I also now own the follow-up disk Spread the Word, but it's not quite so consistently strong. I await their newest release (coming in May) with enthusiasm!!

There aren't too many disks that I and my 19-year-old daughter both like, but this is one of them. When others her age ask what she likes, and she mentions Down to the Bone, she draws stares and "WHO?" She simply says, "check 'em out..." You should too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The strongest in the series.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: New Jack Ballads, Vol. 2 is the strongest of the series in my opinion. Two songs alone make this song very strong. Games by the very underrated Chuckii Booker (which T.I. should have sampled for his huge hit Why U Wanna ) and I Want My Girl by Jesse Johnson. Like its predecessor, Smooth Grooves: New Jack Ballads, Vol. 2 leans toward conventional urban R&B from the late '80s and early '90s instead of the hip-hop-inflected contemporary R&B that came to define new jack R&B. Even if the music on Vol. 2 isn't strictly new jack R&B, it's nevertheless first-rate urban soul, one of the best, most comprehensive discs of its kind on the market, featuring such hits as Guy's "Piece of My Love," Ready for the World's "Tonight," Force MDs' "Tender Love," Al B. Sure's "Nite and Day," After 7's "Ready or Not," Club Nouveau's "Heavy on My Mind" and Miki Howard & Gerald Levert's "That's What Love Is."

4 out of 5 stars One of best New Jack compilations assembled!!.......2004-02-25

The other two compilations in this series, Vols. 1 & 3, are very disappointing. This is one of best CDs to purchase if you want to learn more about the great period of Black music that is known as New Jack Swing. This CD makes you think back to a time where R&B music was actually tolerable. I hate to listen to the radio today because of all the thrown together crap that is played all day long. If you enjoy real R&B, definitely pick this one up!

Amazon.com essential recording

At their best, War walked a line between bleak evocations of inner-city life seen from their California vantage point ("The World Is a Ghetto," "Me and Baby Brother") and delightful affirmations that came complete with winking humor ("The Cisco Kid," "Why Can't We Be Friends?"). All those songs and more fill Grooves & Messages's first disc; the second collects remixes of some of the classics, both strikingly effective (Soundprops' mellow take on "Tobacco Road") and less so (the Ganja Kru's by-the-numbers drum & bass "Low Rider"). Still, those with an ear for both old- and new-school sounds who haven't invested in a War CD may find this two-for-the-price-of-one package irresistible. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars War...proves themselves to be most worthy Funksters.......2004-02-03

One of the 70's most Influential funk acts, with the impressively consistant catalogue of acknowledged hits, that even to this day, are a marvel in soul-laden grooves than have found their unique music, sampled relentlessly into the dance music scene, (although prominently in the `house' & `R&b' music fields). "Slippin' into Darkness" is a widely sampled track, and its easy to see why..slickly produced, impeccably sung, and toe-tappingly funky, and much of what on this album sticks to that template, of keeping the listeners attention for the use of P-funk, soaring Choruses (sometimes sung by several members in a upwardly spiralling crescendo), also providing significant firepower in getting their funk itinerary across, are "The World Is a Ghetto", "Low Rider" (which is such a excellent track, it's frequently used in films, has been used in a TV. commercial & been cover-versioned by metallers "Korn") & "Why Can't We Be Friends?"......a case of Soul-funkers on a mission to convert the uninformed???...Mission accomplished!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great music, but a disappointing product.......2001-11-12

I bought this CD partly on the strength of the Rough Guide review that described it as a compilation of "full-length" versions. Although it's a very well-chosen collection of songs, it's not true that all the tracks are full-length: at least two definitely aren't. I'm speaking of "Spill the Wine" (in which the second verse is completely omitted) and "The World Is a Ghetto" (which is nowhere near the length of the original album version). It's especially a shame because it's such a great-looking package and there is surely plenty of room on a two-disc set for the full-length versions.

5 out of 5 stars The flyest........2000-03-06

This CD is a plus for many reasons; I'd give it more than 5 stars if possible. First of all, it contains most of WAR's best known and best loved hits on the first CD. The second CD, which is especially attractive for dance fans like me, consists of some good remixes of really great WAR songs. Second of all, the price is more than reasonable--almost like getting 2 CDs for the price of one. WAR is a very underrated band, and they have a wide range of styles and sounds, probably due to the fact that they were a true multi-culti clique. They are right up there with Earth, Wind, & Fire, the Isley Brothers, and any of the various incarnations of George Clinton's groups as far as funk, funk-soul, and or funk-rock with something that most acts don't have today: actual instruments (not computers). This set has classic dusties made just right for cruising, and even the original, non-remixed versions are tight for moving. Wanna be a TRUE big tymer? Grab this CD; you will not be disappointed. Everyone can learn something from this CD, even "current" artists with their manufactured, sample-heavy, test-rabbit sounds. Add it to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars It's hard not to like this cd.......1999-10-19

War never received the radio airtime that it probably deserved, and that is why this cd is so great to hear. Like EW&F, War has been overlooked as a great group...fortunately, we're reminded of their exceptional talents with songs like "Low Rider", "Cisco Kid" and "East L.A"...an all-time favorite that was largely ignored by the disc jokeys (pun intended.) For crusin and having fun, buy this album. You won't be disappointed with anything but the remix cd; that is a useless production
