At the time of his death in 2004, the indomitable Rick James was in the process of unleashing yet another wave of freakiness on the general populace. He had penned 10 songs, half of what he hoped would become a double-disc set, and holed himself up in his L.A. home studio to record them. Though the project never came to fruition as he envisioned it, Deeper Still culls the tracks he had in the can plus a single cover, and it opens wide a window on the freak-master's mindset in his final days. The gentle title song swerves away from empty come-ons and excessive suavity to celebrate romance and (of all things) commitment, and a later track, "Sapphire," again dispenses with signature slinkiness in favor of affirmation--here, strong black women see some love. Evidence of James's fabled "sex, drugs, and funk & soul" lifestyle peek through on the steamy "Do You Want to Play" and the autobiographical cuts "Taste" and "Stroke," but mostly Deeper Still represents a mellowing. "Guinnevere," the cover, is a great example: James, who was still in fine vocal form, gets comfortable with a meandering David Crosby meditation on a green-eyed lady who longs, above all, to be set free. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Rick James' new CD, "Deeper Still".......2007-06-29

I would give 5 stars to Rick Jame's latest CD for how much I have played it and loved it since I purchased it last week! In honor of Rick - I appreciate the fact that the record producer pushed to have this CD released! My fave song is "Stop It.." I hear it in my head constantly. I also enjoyed "Deeper Still" and "Taste". "Do you Wanna Play?" with Howard Hewitt was quite simply a classic Rick ballad. He had (and always will) have a unique voice; you always knew it was Rick. I have been a fan of Rick's since he and the Stone City Band first toured in Oakland - even checked out Prince as the "opening act for Rick". He was "the Man" back in the day and will be missed always...

Rick James was a musical genious and definitely the "King of Funk"!!If you are a true Rick James fan (and loved his vocals and ballads), pick up this CD! If you miss the old Rick with the upbeat, fast-paced songs, this CD isn't for you. It is for the true Rick James fans that saw "Deeper Still" into who Rick was, a soulful balladeer....

Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Good; not great Rick James.......2007-06-23

It was a welcome posthumous gift from the King of Punk Funk. The album boasts some interesting twists such as Howard Hewitt on vocals even (though the song is dreadful) and the inclusion of a remarkable cover of the CSN classic, Guineverre (a stroke of genius and a throwback to Rick's early pre motown days that made me want to go get out my Great White Cane album). But the nasty, new wave edge that Rick James funk has always had is in short supply (after Stroke and Not Alone, that is pretty much it). You can hear some invisible R&B producers and writers attempting to get him back on urban radio and BET. The cheesy liners notes and packaging give the set a very low budget, independent look - there arent even any player credits even though there is an insert to hype the forthcoming book. Stone City Records could have taken a cue from Prince's NPG Records on art direction. The fuzzy cover photo looks as though it was taken the morning after an all night coke binge.

I went to Rick's last album, Urban Rhapsody, and it is alot beter than this one. That album is vintage Rick without being dated or "over-modernized" - it was a shame that it didnt get more commercial recognition because it was his best since Throwin' Down. Deeper Still should have been in the same vein. It actually is to some extint as half of it sounds like outtakes that didnt make the cut for Rhapsody - maybe they are since Rick was long gone by the time this album surfaced. Don't get me wrong. It is not bad - in fact it is good overall with a few cuts saving it from being slightly less than mediocre. You have to be a hardcore Rick James fan to appreciate it fully - I think. I have been one myself since Mary Jane -- but I know will be bored with this album in a month.

5 out of 5 stars Grown Folk Funk n Roll.......2007-06-08

I know some of you will beg to differ but I am the BIGGEST RICK JAMES fan ever! I never missed a concert and bought every album that he released. I waited for 2 1/2 long years for this album to be released and when it finally was I was no where near disapointed. A lot of folk want to harp on his legal troubles and the deamons in his life but push that crap aside and listen to the genius that was Rick James. From "COME GET IT" to "URBAN RAPSODY", the funk was alive and kickin. His voice was one of the best in music. We have all heard the classics (YOU AND I, MARY JANE, BUSTIN OUT, FIRE IT UP, GIVE IT TO ME BABY, SUPERFREAK etc), but take the time to listen to Rick's ballads and I'm not just talking about "FIRE & DESIRE" and "EBONY EYES". One listen to "JEFFERSON BALL" from the Bustin Out album or "MY LOVE" from the "THROWIN DOWN" album and you too should be convinced that his voice was superior to most. This new album "DEEPER STILL" will go down as a classic. After all the drama in his life, "DEEPER STILL" represents RICK JAMES THE ADULT. The title track is tearing adult radio down and shows that the funk in him still lives...it never died. His remake of "GUINNEVERE" is simply beautiful. The groovy "STOP IT" is straight riding music and could possibly be the next single from this album. "DO YOU WANNA PLAY" with JOHNNY GILL and HOWARD HEWITT is a stone cold blue lights in the basement joint and Rick more than holds his own with two of R&B's greatest voices ever. "SAPPHIRE" is his ode to the black woman (i.e. EBONY EYES). It's a beautiful song (BLOW DANNY)! This album will not disappoint. From the funk of "NOT ALONE" and "STROKE" (about his trying times) to the smoothness of "Maybe" Rick was headed back to the top of the charts with this one. PICK IT UP...you will totally love it. Too bad he's not here to enjoy the success that could have been (or will be). Imagine a video for "DEEPER STILL"...
RIP JAMES AMBROSE JOHNSON JR, (aka SLICK RICK JAMES). I miss you brother !

5 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper!.......2007-06-02

Rick James was the type of musician that left you never knowing what to expect when purchasing his music, aside from knowing that in the end a good time was to have been had by all. This album is just the same and the outcome no different! My official review can be found on soultracks.com but I have to say that this is one of the best albums I've have had the pleasure of reviewing recently. Diversity through earch song, with nothing sounding vaguely similar to any song previously played. A blend of uptempo, ballad, mellow, funky grooves makes "Deeper Still" one for your personal collection!

4 out of 5 stars Album of the year.......2007-05-30

Rick James Dominated the funk in the 80's and he pretty much single handly kept the Funk Alive back in the day. he has never gotten his due because others stole his Concepts and Ideas. well on this Album Rick played a whole different hand and it works. Rick already did Funk, R&B,Blues, Jazz, Pop,Rap and everything else in between. He is a Underrated Smooth Singer. Rick has some of the tightest slow Jams Ever. the Man was a Musical Genius. He understood style. the title track along with 'Taste" are on point."Sapphire" is a Great tribute Song to Black Women. Rick was a strong Poet and never afraid to show his emotions. you ain't gonna catch Rick James having to Perform behind a Sheet on National Tv or something. he was striaght to the Point and direct. He should Win more Grammys and be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was One of a Kind and he left a lasting impact. he was Soulful. He was a Strong Soul Brother who understood changing the game up. His game got stolen, but Rick this time went into a whole different direction and it works. RIP to Brother Rick James. the Genius Lives on.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars My Number One.......2007-06-20

I live in a little village in a small country many thousand miles away from Luther. But from the first day I listened to him singing the song 'Here and Now' many years ago, he has remained My Number One.No male vocalist today can match the sheer talent he was gifted with.

And I especially treasure this 'live album' because I never had the chance to see him perform on stage.Disappointed initially that it wasn't made into a music video, I found that with no visual distractions, the senses are more alert to every word, every pause, every scream in the crowd. To just hear him talk was thrilling. And I was laughing at his jokes!

This album is like Luther's musical history. Opening with 'Never Too Much', the song which catapulted him to fame, then a slower version of 'Here and Now' and then sharing some jokes with Kevin Owens and his
background singers before continuing with the seductive 'Take You Out'.
The ballads 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' and 'superstar' are stunningly beautifully ( there won't be enough adjectives to describe them ) sung as only Luther can do.

The audience was screaming ' We love you Luther' throughout the performance and I felt like doing the same too.By the time he had finished 'If Only For One Night', 'A House Is Not A Home' and 'Glow Of Love' and said "goodnight everybody, thanks for coming" , I was left speechless and breathless as if I was sitting right there in the audience.

It's been two years since he's been gone but he's still My Number One.

5 out of 5 stars AN AWESOME END TO A STELLAR CAREER.......2007-02-21

I've always loved Luther, although I wouldn't consider myself a fanatic.
Suffice it to say I've enjoyed MOST of his output. Vocally, he is the
last of the great male R&B vocalists, IMHO. No one since has come close
to his silky, sensitive yet powerful vocalizing. That said, I think this
CD stands as one of LV's very best. It has everything you want in a
live CD: great sound, great song selection, AMAZING vocals and that vibe
that makes you wish you'd been there that night. I highly recommend it
to Luther fans everywhere. Listen to the soundclips and see for yourself.
We miss you Luther, and we'll never forget you!

5 out of 5 stars A Non-Believer .......2007-01-09

I must admit that I had heard Mr Vandross coming to my city to do a concert. Scores of people would go...for what I asked? I was talking to a relative and she said he likes to do concerts. So what was all the fuss about? Then I heard "A House Is Not A Home." I knew Dionne Warwick had me enticed when she did it...but this man......He gave this song new meaning. Fortunately, for me my Aunt called me up and said Luther is coming to town. Well, Well, so Mr. Vandross will be here. I must go and hear him sing this 'signature song'. I called up and nearly dropped when I heard the price of the tickets. Decided against going until the lady said I have Front Row Center Seats !!!!!! Did I buy my ticket...yes I did!!
Front row center can have you spellbound....but I will admit...His concert was good...but I didn't know a single song, except "A House Is Not A Home" !! I was shamed...and... I was not a fan of his. So I went with a looking and inquiring mind to hear this creamy voiced singer.

I was not disappointed... but kept waiting for the signature song. It finally came with the theatrics and Mr. Vandross walking across the stage from left to right with intermittenent sounds of ""Oh""... in front of the microphone then to the other side and back in front of the microphone with another loud ""Oh"". My mind said..... He's setting us up for the kill...and he did more than that. I felt like someone just had made love to me, begged me. seduced me, and caressed my mind...first...then body ...and then soul. This man knew how to use his voice , was truly Gifted and A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. His backup singers were absent and the soul catching , dramatic voice and sounds of Luther were there alone on the stage (not to forget the band).

I came thee seeking, and I found... However while the crowd gave him a standing ovation for his intrepretation of a song of a man in love with a woman that had made a mistake.......I just melted in my resolve and knew that I would be a life long believer and fan of Luther Vandross.

Being in the front row center seat...Mr Vandross had a good view of my calm reactions (being I didn't know any of the songs he sang...so I just relaxed and sat back in my seat to be entertained.) When the evening was over...he clapped with the audience....thanked them for coming...and before he left the stage...Mr Luther Vandross looked RIGHT AT ME....SMILED HIS PEARLY WHITES AND SAID """GOODNIGHT"""................. Now I must admit the concert and A House Is Not A Home ..blew me away, but for him to say Goodnight......left no doubt in my mind...I was looked at and smiled by a celebrity last....and by a GENTLEMAN first!!!!!

Now you have read my story of me and Mr.Luther Vandross. I went out after that concert and bought mostof all the songs he recorded..and played them until they got scratched up. The DVD at Wembly was EXCELLENT.....the man can dance when he wants too.(smile) I just wish someone would make a dvd of this cd available...so far I have heard nothing...but I brought this cd and it's **7 STAR PERFECT**. I've played it over and over and over again. Superstar is his favorite to do and Nat Adderly is.....out of this world.... and nobody does it better than Luther..someone on here wrote "Only Luther can outdo Luther." Then I accidently left it at my daughter's house, but not to be dismayed...just got another copy. So I will eventually have 2 copies of this magnificent cd of the Late Luther Vandross. I have the studio version of most of these songs on this cd. but hearing him do it ""Live "", packs such a powerful punch !!!!I know that he danced with his father again... when he saw him ....and is now waiting for his mother so that they all can dance together again ...... FOR ETERNITY.

Thanks for reading my long review....My favorite songs...they all are..but "Stop... to Love" and his Signature song are echoed in my mind FOREVER !!!

5 out of 5 stars My Secret Love.......2007-01-06

Simply the greatest Luther CD ever put out. You really do experience the magic of being at one of his concerts. What other R&B star has a live CD that sounds just as good, if not better then the original studio version? Not many!

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-06-07

overall the album is ok...not all the songs live up to how wonderful "Underwater Love" is. It's not a bad album, but I wish there were more tracks! Underwater Love is the track that made me want to get the album. There are only 10 tracks and it is expensive because it's an import cd. I really do like the singer's voice though =) "Devil Mood" and "Numbers" have more Jungle elements intertwined with them while "Dark Walk" is an instrumental track that is more Trip-Hop. "Giulietta" is just a boring track and definetly a "filler" "Jamie Pan" is also a weak track...the album has a total of 10 tracks of which 3 range from 3 mins and 11 secs to 3 mins and 48 secs. The best track is unltimately "Underwater Love" which is a great 6 mins a 46 secs. Songs to download: "With You" and "Aguas de Marco" Also I think the group Supreme Beings of Leisure offers much better albums but they only sing in English.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly created together in a bliss of rhythmly beats!.......2007-05-26

All around a great CD! Nina's voice is downright smoky, seductive, playful, uplifting and smooth. The keyboards add a touch of flare throughout the CD, shifting it from past styles to present ones, as it goes from trip/hop, to bossa nova, to jazzy and all mixed in. Then adding in with it all kinds of creative blends and effects, a truly wonderful production, perfectly created together in a bliss of rhythmly beats! Something I just enjoy listening to constantly. If you like Sade, this is sort of like it, but with a sweet kick of juvenating spirit, a tad higher in tone and more imagination, simply put, it's like Sade on steroids! Definitely it's an improvement in the style, but you really can't give it a style as it fluctuates throughout the CD, and every song is simply great.

5 out of 5 stars Underwater Love...........2007-05-20

I purchased this cd after hearing a demo version if Underwater Love, although the cd was a little hard to find, I finally procured a cd, even though it was from out of the country, but once you find a copy of this cd, you will not be disapointed. Their sound is definitely original, and very much their own. The album is seasoned with hints of trip hop and is very much Brazilian flavoured. This is truely a beautiful and brilliant debut album indeed. Other notable releases and projects are the band's second effort, Heroes of Nature, Lost in a Moment by Shrift (Nina Miranda), Da Lata (Chris Franck), Kv5 (Marc Brown), and Chris and Nina by Chris Franck and Nina Miranda should have their new album out sometime in June.

5 out of 5 stars why is it so hard to find?.......2007-03-20

I was lucky i got the "last" one from mediaflow in jersey for $10 so the shipping was nil. Here's an idea you're thinking of buying a cd that you might like but are not sure, well take that money and combine in with a cd you'd like for sure and than buy this because it's so damn good. The music itself is so sick, and then add nina mirandas soft, SEXY vocals and damn you've got good music. She has such a great confident style i love it, the oooh ooh part in devil mood drives me crazy, buy it just for that. When I'm driving somewhere late at night, this cd is default.

4 out of 5 stars Trip-hop French Bossa Nova Bliss.......2006-01-05

I fell in love with the song "Underwater Love" on the Ultimate Chillout CD Collection, but had not heard anything else by Smoke City until I recently purchased this CD. I am so glad that I finally screwed up the courage to pick this up. While I am not as completely blown away by this as some of the other reviewers here are, I am still quite impressed.

The entire album is incredible and all of the songs are just as fabulous as "Underwater Love", some even better I dare say. Sexy, smoky, sophisticated, and completely lounge-worthy. The vocals are incredible, and are delivered in a multiple of languages.

So go ahead, don't be afraid to take a chance on this. I would be hard-pressed to imagine any fan of trip-hop, bossa nova, or downtempo lounge disliking this unique little number, which is a perfect marriage of all three genres.

5 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate Starbucks CD.......2007-07-04

One reads that and they may interpret it as a backhanded compliment, but it is not meant to be. It is just this disc has incredible potential to be a huge hit with the boomer Starbuck crowd. They promoted McCartney's new disc that way, and this is so much better. I am reminded of Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" disc in the way that these songs appeal to such a wide audience. I also believe this is much better than Tina's biggest solo breakout disc. To think that this is recorded in Nashville yet has not been released stateside yet, just blows me away. The disc opens with one of the bluesier tracks "Every Time You See Me Smile" with Ronnie Wood contributing. He plays on two other tracks, but oddly enough not on the outstanding Stones cover "Time is on my side". "After you" is a single in the UK, why it isn't a single here in the states? Well, your guess is as good as mine. I think Ms. Knight has one of the most powerful voices if not the most powerful voice recording today. But beyond that, her material is just so damned good. Other highlights are "No Man's Land" and "Saviour". "Black Butta" is the song that most reminds me of a Tina Turner song, in particular Tina's version of "Nutbush City Limits". She does a very good cover of "Rock Steady" as well though it is not one of the discs highlights. Amazing that this was recorded in 5 days. Hopefully she will return to Nashville for another week or so very soon. There has not been a better disc released this year. Now record company execs need to get their head out their rears and release this gem stateside. And please put her on tour here. I promise you at least two ticket sales.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive........2007-06-15

Her last set of new songs Affirmation saw Knight trespassing on Anastacia's territory, attempting a big rock-r'n'b crossover affair which was vaguely disappointing after the wealth of good songs on Who I Am.

"Music City Soul", however, pretty much does what it says on the wrapper. This is a present-day conjuring of classic soul with the odd cover like the Stones' "Time Is On My Side" thrown in.

Recorded in double-quick time, there is a rawness to the vocal performances, and a classy timelessness to the brassy, authentic arrangements.

Talking of Stones, Ronnie Wood adds his guitar to three tracks, so bowled over was he by Knight's voice.

She does indeed sound ever more impressive with every outing.
When the energetic Black Butta winds into frenetic action, it's difficult not to think of her as a Tina Turner for the new millennium.

One thing's for sure, when it comes to UK soul divas, Beverley is certainly showing Joss Stone how it should be done.

5 out of 5 stars Music City Soul.......2007-05-18

This is the first CD I have heard from Beverley and I was very impressed. She is an outstanding vocalist and this album is so good that it is unreal. This is an album that is strong from start to finish, you will not find any filler here. It is amazing that such a classic album could be recorded in five days. [...]. Thank you Beverley.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Cool versions ;-).......2006-03-15

I love R Kelly and all of his music, and now to get some remixes from him is fantastic because while not all artists make good remixes; he has done a great job. The songs on here are all great songs to start with, but now most are enhanced really well. I especially love Your Body's Calling, I Can't Sleep Baby, Down Low and Step In The Name Of Love. They are the best cuts here but for all R Kelly fans, you won't be too disappointed. He's such a talented artist, and this is a fantastic addition to your R Kelly collection.

4 out of 5 stars This Is.........The REMIX!.......2006-03-09

Most R Kelly fans have everything this man has put out anyways. But for those who were late jumping on the bandwagon, Remix City Volume One serves up the hottest (and a few not so hot) remixes that span R Kelly's entire career. Remixes for classics songs like "Bump and Grind," "Slow Dance," "Your Body's Callin'," "Sex Me," "I Can't Sleep Baby," and "Down Low" already make this disc worth the money. Additional jams like the remixes for "I Wish (To The Homies That We Lost)," "I Mean (I Don't Mean It)" "Step In The Name Of Love,"and "Ignition" further exemplify the worth of this disc. Some songs like the two "Feelin' On Your Booty" remixes as well as "Slow Wind" and "Burn It Up" could have been left off and replaced with other remixess. I guess we'll have to wait for the obviously-needed Volume Two for any other jems.

2 out of 5 stars only for those who are not familiar with r.kelly.......2005-11-26

first of all, this album is clean! i mean, non explicit. you cant enjoy anything if you have songs filled with blanks and blurs.
i wont say this album is bad. if you're a real r. kelly fan, then you should know or have had possession of these songs for a long line of years now. but if you're not a big r. kelly fan, then i would say this remix collection is a weak perspective of his better work in the past decade.
like i said this is a clean record. it has removed the explicit content of his better songs like "live to regret it" from the "down low" single. ofcourse the remixes inspired from his original 12 play album are just CLASSIC! but once those songs are over you begin to see his style as it has changed over the years and you may even sense how much his remixes lack originality in the latter of the album. i think he really should have included remixes that i find missing from the late 90's like "gotham city remix"-which was an awesome remix, hell even the "street dreams remix" he did with nas was great! or the "did you ever think remixes" or the "i believe i can fly remix", how lush were those?!
over all, this album is a great waste of new material, and could have positively been organized with what does exist in a better order but thats not what we got. this album is only a 5 star album to he/she whom has never had an r.kelly experience.
and even if you wanted a better r.kelly experience, i would have to recommend his self titled album which was a great album in '95, and then the record "R." that he had was even better (not to mention a double disc), but the pinnacle of his best studio albums i would have to say to be "[...]". after that, you're just gonna have to make a draw for it, cuz r.kelly just isnt the r&b pioneer he used to be.

Never heard of the funky soul and reggae music of Belize, that sliver of Caribbean coastline just east of Guatemala and south of Cancun? You're probably not alone, and the Belize City Boil Up compilation (the 6th this year from crate-digging music salvagers the Numero Group) is the varied and danceable introduction for the interested yet uninitiated. Soaking up influences from their Jamaican neighbors and their soulful Motown/Stax brethren from the north, these little-known groups recorded a handful of albums and singles in the 60s and 70s. The results showcase rootsy reggae (Belizean patriarchal funkster Lord Rhaburn's "More Love Reggae", The Web's "Rated G"), covers of Wilson Pickett and Johnny Nash, and some funky I-can't-believe-it's-not-sampled beats of the Harmonettes "Shame Shame Shame" and Rhaburn's "Disco Connection". Soulful standouts The Professionals (whose album covers noted their "promptness and reliability") cover both the O'Jays "Back Stabbers" and "Theme from The Godfather" - now that's a group with range! --Ben Heege

    Album Description

Belizian's call it Boil Up, and it's anything but leftovers. Mix equal parts R&B, calypso, disco, funk, reggae, bruckdown, soul, folk, and whatever else can be found back on the bottom shelf of the musical pantry. Get ready to feast on passport stamped rhythms, second-deck cruise ship melodies, hotel pool calypso, soundtracks to movies not-yet-made, and anything else savory, or unsavory, enough to throw into the pot.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sho' nuff hot.............2007-06-29

Stylistically diverse enough to encompass Latin, reggae, funk and burnin' soul, this is still tight enough to be thematic. The theme is temperature. No soft soul a la the Dells and so on. I remember the old Duke records various artists package called "Like 'Er Red Hot" (sadly never reissued on CD). That title would be pretty valid here, not that "Belize City Boil Up" misses the point.
"Can't Go Halfway" and "Shame Shame Shame" are my favorite cuts, but they have plenty of competition.
We also get here a lyrically truncated version of the O'Jays "Backstabber," just a few of the words, but no shortchange on the revved up instrumental section. And Nadia Cattouse makes a nice contribution as the lone female vocalist; here again, within the overall theme.
I love the way Numero Uno handles the cover art of their comps; nice live shots of roots musicians enjoying their craft.

    2 out of 5 stars a nice album.......2006-08-11

The album does not live up to the "hype". It's the kind of album you buy on vacation then go home, put it in your cd rack and never pull it out again. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad; in fact the musicianship is very, very good. But unique it isn't.

    5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 15 stars...mercy........2006-01-05

I'll make this review short and sweet. Buy this album. Do it now, you're online. Neumero does it again (they're 6 for 6 so far) by unleashing one of the most awe-inspiring comps in a long time. It rivals any and all Souljazz comps, and that's saying something as they are also awesome. In fact, pick a couple of those up too.

5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring reggae and funk from Belize.......2005-12-13

Who knew they had such a vibrant and vital music scene in Belize? Apparently the folks at Numero Group, a reissue label with a knack for unearthing piquant, previously unreleased or underheard treasures....

The soulful funk and rootsy reggae on parade here will enliven any party, shake rafters and, inevitably have your neighbors calling the cops...hard not to crank it up when it gets on the good foot like this...

Bonus: has the best version of "Theme from the Godfather" you'll ever hear!
