Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09

Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11

This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13

My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

    Album Description

The most requested collection of music for all your favorite party dances. Based on a nationwide survey of DJ's, dance instructors and PE teachers, this CD includes the Electric Slide, Hand Jive, Bunny Hop, Macarena, Cotton Eyed Joe, Chicken Dance and more! These rerecordings of the original songs are digitalized and the sound quality is excellent. Even the suggestive lyrics were removed so the muisc can be played in school settings. Geared towards kids and adults who want to be kids again!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Well Done.......2006-08-28

I'm pretty stunned with the review below by "johnnybighit" (is he a competitor maybe?). This cd is an excellent and professionally done recording for students and teachers alike. Christie Lane produces a well done and appropriate cd for kids and adults, and frankly, whether these are original artists or rerecordings -- not usual for this kind of cd -- is neither expected nor all that important.

What IS important is the reaction of the kids to the cd, and they LOVE IT! I heartily endorse the quality and originality of this cd for everyone. Enjoy, and dance along to well done and fun bits of music. You will not be disappointed. Five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars D.J........2004-05-27

I DJ for churches,Y's ect. and this cd is GREAT! The music is "clean" and it sounds great for remake. Good production job.Nice to have it all on one disk.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Content.......2003-05-16

I am extremely pleased with the content of this CD. Being in the field of physical education and conducting corporate events for over 15 years, I have never been more pleased with a music CD. More so with the Chicken Dance. I feel this CD is the best on the market. ...

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2003-04-14

I ordered this CD to go with the video and it taught me all those dances that I see everyone doing at public functions. This is the BEST versions I have heard. I didn't even know they were not the originals. There are about 4 out of the 20 tracks that I could tell were remakes, but the rest were just great. Nice to have all of these on a disc that my kids can listen to.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD!.......2003-03-10

I highly recommend it! I bought it for my nieces because all the lyrics were clean. However after listening to it, I decided to bring it to my company party and it was the hit of the party! I knew these were not the originals and didn't expect much, however, I felt that all the songs were great. In fact, some of the songs like the Electric Slide sounds better than the originals!

3 out of 5 stars No angry tangos?.......2007-04-05

Coumbia Ballroom Orchestra albums will make an inexpensive foundation for your new or growing collection of ballroom dance music. This is full orchestra dance music and the strings often carry the melody line. The cover lists the appropriate dance and the tempo (bpm). The tempos are appropriate to the suggested dance and it is all just sweet and beautiful. But sometimes this is not enough, because tangos can also be angry, and cha chas provocative. . .

This is great for practice, and barring a better recording, playing at dancers' requests. I wouldn't schedule a lot of this for black-tie dance parties. Please don't be distressed by the three star rating. I explain the difference between three and four stars in my profile, and you can find links to several dozens albums reviewed there.

Here is the title, duration, suggested dance, and the tempo (bpm):

    Danny boy 2:59, Foxtrot, 30
    Malagueña, La 2:44, Rumba, 27
    L'amour, c'est pour rien 3:13, Tango, 33
Sway / Quien sera, Cha cha, 32
    Sunrise, sunset 2:58, Waltz, 30
Sing, sing, sing 1:55, Swing, 48 (You could also dance quickstep to this)
    Broken promises 3:04, Foxtrot, 30
Sans toi Mamie 3:17, Rumba, 27
    Cumparsita, La 3:10, Tango, 33
Tea for two 2:14, Cha cha, 32
    Time for us, A 2:58, Waltz, 30
    Thriller 2:02, Samba, 54
    Stardust 3:04, Foxtrot, 30
Tonight (Westside Story) 3:17, Rumba, 27
    Jealousy 3:10, Tango, 33
In the mood 2:32, Swing, 44
    Changing partners 2:59, Waltz, 30

3 out of 5 stars Columbia Ballroom Orchestra CDs: Far From Perfect .......2005-10-04

THIS REVIEW APPLIES TO ALL THEIR CDs: Unless you have access to a large music collection, this series may be your best bet. HOWEVER, its far from perfect:
    1. Most of the music feels artificial, and lacks artistic feel.
    2. Several of the songs do not have a clear beat, required for beginning dancers.

On the three albums I bought, I found only about one third of the tracks to be acceptable. I just wish someone would come up with a better collection of music.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Choice!.......1999-02-04

Let's Dance Volumes 1-6 are all good choices for ballroom dancing enthusiasts or instrumental music listeners. I went to a ballroom dancing school that used this music almost exclusively, because it is of high quality, it stays close to strict tempo, and it uses popular songs. Unlike some other ballroom music collections whose songs all sound alike, this one is not boring and numbingly dull. The Latin tunes have authentic-sounding instruments and rhythms, and the smooth tunes (foxtrot, waltz, tango, etc.) have a nice full sound. These CDs should definitely please anyone with an interest in this type of music.

    2 out of 5 stars What's happened to Debbie?.......2005-04-15

I am not a staunch Gibson fan like most of the drooling 5-star reviews here. But I loved her in the 80's and think her to be a talented singer-songwriter who puts modern pop moppets to shame. I thought it was awesome when she broke into Broadway and made a steady career of it.
    Then I heard 'Colored Lights'.
I ask, Debbie!(sorry, DEBORAH), what has happened to you??
Like others here, I applaud her choice to include lesser-known songs. But in doing so, it really behoves her to SELL them as great songs, not rework them for her own interpretation. I felt like I was listening not to the pure-toned, crystal voice of our favourite teen idol, but someone doing a bad impersonation of her. There is hardly a single line she sings which isn't punctured by bad ennunciation, poor phrasing or a lack of respect for the intent of the composers.
There were no gravelly growls(meant to sound sexy, no doubt, but too overdone to succeed), breathy sighs, uneven tone, lacklustre dynamics, excessive scooping, wavery pitch and lack of top range in the Debbie Gibson I remember. But her voice on this album is such a mere shadow of its youthful self that she resorts to these irritating vocal bandaids to get through the song. Any track that had a 'big finish' invariably caused her to run out of steam long before she got there. A belter, Deb is not.
(and I know what I'm talking about, I'm a trained singer myself. If Deborah has a singing teacher, he/she should be shot).

This album was a huge disappointment for me. I love Broadway, but Deb fails terribly to give these songs the great renditions they deserve.
I should add, I have never had the fortune to see Deb sing live, so for all I know, maybe she COULD have done these songs justice had she avoided the pop slant. But this album shows neither the songs nor any talent she still has to advantage at all.

Listen to some Idina Menzel if you want a pop-feel voice that can also out-Belt them all.

    5 out of 5 stars A Taste of Broadway.......2004-10-13

I've been a fan of her since God only knows. I know she's not just talented but she is very passionate of (her) music. Knowing that she moved herself into broadways, it's rather of a challenge for me to listen to the songs especially when I'm too familiar with her pop genre. But after a while, I'm used to it coz Debbie is still Debbie to me. She's not afraid of re-arranging the original song to her style, at least she knows what she's doing and again she's proven it. My most favourite track is "Colored Lights", it's light, cheerful, somewhat witty and, in a way, brings up my imagination of seeing her (and the casts) on stage performing the song. All in all, Debbie still has a class and style for us to share.

    1 out of 5 stars OUCH!.......2004-08-23

Deborah Gibson is a talented rock star. With a good musical director, she has proved herself to be a wonderful musical theatre performer. This album, however, is a very uneasy marriage of the two genres. She sings every showtune on the album as if it's a pop tune with horrendous bubble gum arrangements. I have seen Miss Gibson in two musicals and have heard her sing showtunes live on other occasions- she knows how to sing showtunes. On this album, however, she's trying to pander to her pop audience and in the process, she created an album that fails as a pop album and as a showtune album. I can only hope that Miss Gibson finds a better musical director the next time she decides to record showtunes.

5 out of 5 stars (Deborah Gibson ) AT HER BEST!!!!.......2004-04-23

4 out of 5 stars Deborah delivers deliciously.......2004-02-13

After more than 15 years in the business, Deborah Gibson has learned many lessons and fulfilled many dreams. After 2001's horrifyingly misguided "M.Y.O.B.," she returns to the adult contemporary sound that landed her two number one hits on the Billboard charts, and turns that up a couple of notches. By selecting 13 showtunes from varying Broadway musicals, Gibson satisfies immensely, and delivers a unique compilation worthy of at least one full listen.

"Colored Lights" is not meant to be a showcase of hit tunes; many of the songs on this opus aren't radio hits. Instead, Gibson puts together a delicious smorgasbord of rhythmic melodies and heartfelt ballads that complement her voice (that, strangely enough, hasn't seemed to change that much after more than a decade in the industry).

What is also important to consider in one's evaluation of "Colored Lights" is that, while comparison with the original works/performers is inevitable, we should also take the time to consider that Gibson's pop sensibilities will always shine through. Perhaps it is for that reason, that Gibson has had the best of both pop stardom and Broadway success, that she gives new dimension to these melodies.

The standouts on this collection include "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love," which radio would do well to pick up, as the soothing melody and heartfelt delivery will find AC audiences easily; "On My Own," off "Les Miserables," where Gibson as Eponine sounds both heartbroken yet hopeful; the playful title track, from "The Rink," which features some of the most whimsical lyrics I've heard off Broadway thus far; "Raise the Roof," which is truly enjoyable in its pseudo-Latino reincarnation in Gibson's hands (yes, it does beg for a house remix; Gibson's gay audience will see to its success), and "Anytime (I Am There)," which is heartbreaking in its stark delivery, and is easily one of my top five Gibson tracks of all time.

Admittedly, Gibson can't overcome comparisons to the definitive versions of some of the songs. Let's face it: Debbie ain't no Barbra. Her versions of "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Who Are You Now?," while stellar on their own, just fall flat when compare to Streisand's. "Let Me Entertain You," off "Gypsy," ironically, isn't very entertaining, and "Blame It On The Summer Night" drags on.

All in all, "Colored Lights" puts together a collection of songs that are quite distinct and classy, and is easily one of the more worthy albums in Ms. Gibson's discography. She would do well to continue producing albums along this line instead of trying to fight the Britney's and Christina's, because those fads fade, and only the classics remain. Trust in "Colored Lights" to earn a well-deserved place in that section of your record collection.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.

4 out of 5 stars Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02

I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.

Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.

The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.

I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18

I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.

    2 out of 5 stars COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30

Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.

The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

Purchase all of the Coumbia Ballroom Orchestra albums! They will make an inexpensive foundation for your new or growing collection of ballroom dance music. This is full orchestra dance music and the strings often carry the melody line. The cover lists the appropriate dance and the tempo (bpm). The tempos are appropriate to the suggested dance and it is all beautifully recorded.

Please don't be distressed by the three star rating. This is good stuff! I explain the difference between three and four stars in my profile, and you can find links to several dozen albums reviewed there.

Here is the title, duration, suggested dance , and the tempo (bpm):

4 out of 5 stars Great ballroom dancing CD with strict tempo and good variety.......1999-07-04

This is another good professionally produced CD with a selection of strict tempo numbers by the familiar Columbia Ballroom Orchestra and is worth having in your expanding music library. Fresh music is a must for the competition dancer whether amateur or professional. This disk provides enough variety to satisfy the most jaded dancer. May not be competition quality, as Gunter Noris and others, but well worth having for listening and practice. We compete in American Smooth and Rhythm since 1995. Beginners will also enjoy dancing to this easy listening music.
