What if reggae was rooted in Fort Greene, brooklyn? What if soul was baptized in Bridgetown, Barbados? DAVID PILGRIM was raised in an island paradise, came of age in a hard city; embodies both, but reflects an experience unlike either. The ISLAND SOUL of DAVID PILGRIM spans reggae, calypso and soul music. It is a living journal of his rich musical and personal experiences. It can be playful; it can be profound. It makes linkages and connections that challenge and envelop any listener. And he has a damn good time playing it. Come take a listen.

Carencro, named for Marc Broussard's Louisiana hometown, is at times a swamp-pop masterpiece, with leadoff track "Home" stealing the mud-crusted show. What happens in the 11 songs that follow, though, could redeem major record labels from their bullying reputations. Because instead of shoving this pop/rock/soul/R&B wunderkind in the right direction--that being the direction that center-spears his gift for channeling greats like Sam Cooke, John Hiatt, and Stevie Wonder in the space of a single song--whoever was in charge let him wander, and what resulted is a collection that, while hugely promising, fails to measure up to his big, baritoney talent. The songwriting is troublesome in spots ("I know you can break these chains/and set me free," from "Save Me"), and the genre shifts, while fun ("Saturday" is a '70s-style, horn-studded affair), can be jarring. For next go-round, fans--he will earn them, and deservedly, with this disc--should keep their fingers crossed that "Home" is where his heart is. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

For those music buyers who have enjoyed Barry White's music since the early 1970s but may not be devoted enough for the three-CD box set Just for You, this 20-track compilation brings together all of White's major chart hits between 1973 and 1979, along with a couple of entries from his Love Unlimited Orchestra. White's distinctive vocal style--a deep, resonant baritone-bass that oozes sex appeal--was the icing on the cake for those hits; superlative string arrangements (courtesy of the late Gene Page) encased White in a lush setting, while White's hand-picked rhythm section (which included many of Los Angeles's top session players) created a groove that was hard to beat. The combination was lethal: hits like "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," and "You're My First, My Last, My Everything" made White a chart staple and an early king of disco; his skill as a vocal interpreter was fully evident on a 1979 reading of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," another standout on this collection. On the evidence of that track alone, it's hard to believe that, according to legend, White never planned to be a recording artist in his own right and would have been happy to remain in the background as producer and songwriter! --David NathanAmazon.com
The most hot-buttered of all soul singers, Barry White is an artist whose CDs come with a purpose. To say what that purpose is, is not for a family Web site--but it involves that thing that Mommy and Daddy do at night with the bedroom door closed. All-Time Greatest Hits collects the essential White and Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks onto a packed CD. Are 20 cuts too much? Not with Viagra. That's a kind of medicine that grownups take. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

Stands the test of time.......2007-07-16
There were many albums and songs that I enjoyed in 1986 but very few albums that have held up well. Many albums had a lot of songs that sounded the same. You would have an artist that had a HUGE hit in one style and half of the next album would be trying to copy that style in order to get another big hit. Albums like this was an exception. Of course it helps that this is Steve Winwood's first big solo hit album. There is a lot of varity to keep this album interesting from the first to the last song and it is short enough that it doesn't over stay it's welcome. It is now 2007 and I have yet to get tired of this album and it has remained in my essential favorites for over 20 years.
If you are a fan of the 80s, even though you may have "Higher Love" on one of the many 80s compilations out there, the other songs are just as good and in some cases better (like "Finer Things" and "Freedom Overspill"). Give this one a chance.
My only complaint is this album is in much need of remastering. This is a minor complaint because all I have to do is turn up the volume a tad more than I have to do with other CDs.
Got it for "Back in the High Life".......2007-07-12
Three good songs and the rest is forgettable to unbearable.......2007-05-28
Great Variety In One Package.......2007-05-12
Steve primarily focuses on jazz, soul, dance, and island styles blended with good ol' rock 'n' roll. The lyrics of these songs explore fairly deep issues of life but the music tends to be light-hearted and suited for a party. Several of these tracks have become major hits on pop radio during the late 1980s, and the listener may be moved to sing along as the tune plays on the radio or on one's personal music player.
The album starts out with "Higher Love", a bouncy, lively hit with plenty of lighthearted percussion, and a memorable, sing-along chorus. This song is about finding a type of love in contrast to world problems and concerns, and was a popular hit on the radio. "The Finer Things" is generally an island sound, almost reggae-like, and was also a major hit. This track explores the enjoyment and appreciation of the good parts of a relationship with a loved one. "Back In The High Life" is perhaps the gentelest track, with a piano and synthetic fiddle in the background, and a folk/country sound; it was another major hit to reach the airwaves. It deals with returning to the good life after having to face responsibilities and problems.
The remaining five songs are of high quality as well, and noteworthy on their own. "Take It As It Comes" is the second track and is marked by a prominent brass section, giving it a jazzy flavor. This high-energy piece covers the necessity of dealing with and accepting difficulties in one's life. The next track, "Freedom Overspill" has a rhythm and blues style and brass horns, and could be misattributed to another very popular R&B singer. In this song, the subject encourages his friend to open up and talk about concerns and problems. "Wake Me Up On Judgement Day" makes a great dance song for a party, with a high-energy pop/synth background, even though the lyrics are about a guy who would rather sleep through the world's problems caused by human error. The second-to-last track "Split Decision" includes verses with a reggae sound and a chorus with a southern rock style similar to that of Joe Walsh. This mid-paced song tells a story about a guy in conflict with himself over making decisions and taking action. The last track "My Love's Leavin'" contains a synthetic string background along with extensive percusion and electronic keyboard. As the title suggests, this song is about experiencing the loss and heartache when one's lover leaves him.
Overall, this is probably the best of Steve Winwood's albums in his entire music career. If the listener obtains just one of his albums for their collection, this would be the best one to choose. It demonstrates his versatility in his musical styles and performances.
I'm not really under thirteen.......2007-04-10

Dusty Springfield's voice is one of the great pop instruments. Showcased here on 20 tracks from her '60s and early-'70s heyday, her sensuality and strength wrap themselves around everything from big-beat rock and roll like "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Stay Awhile" to seductive masterworks like "Son of a Preacher Man" and "The Look of Love." Very Best ends with a vulnerable reading of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin taking-stock anthem "Goin' Back"--a rarity in the States, where it appeared only briefly. It's great to hear it here. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral player in his gritty 1973 saga of a renegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting one of the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in the lead, and filling this soundtrack--here presented in a remastered version--with classics from Toots & the Maytals ("Pressure Drop," "Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), the Melodians ("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). Cliff himself gets pole position, however, getting in the first ("You Can Get It If You Really Want") and last ("The Harder They Come") words in this first-rate reggae primer, which also features Cliff's enduring "Many Rivers to Cross." --Sam SutherlandCustomer Reviews:

DJ Shadow, a.k.a. Josh Davis, could be credited with bringing newfound introspection to the gloating sounds of hip-hop. Condensed with urban oscillations and scatological beats, Endtroducing shutters with eclectic samples and aural montages that reach beyond the constraints of hip-hop style. Enhancing the mix with fundamentals of rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, the modern fusions fail to go unnoticed, even by the casual listener. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched. Darkened melodies carry throughout the album with its eye on the end of the tunnel. The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. With a message as fragmentary as an overheard conversation, Endtroducing conveys no apparent conclusion, but begs the mind, body, and soul for some rewind. --Lucas HilbertAlbum Description

"The Music Comes Through Me...".......2007-07-06
I try to avoid cliches but sometimes they are exactly that for a particular reason. In other words they're right. Okay, this still sounds like music beamed down from above. It sounds other-worldly, it sounds elsewhere...very, very different.
One of my friends is almost exclusively into dance music, has seen DJ Shadow live, and yet still can't quite get into this. My own take on it is that it's a DJ album you can't actually dance to. I mean you could if you wanted to but that's not quite the point. It's far more important than that.
It's just the sound of it all. And this is bass-heavy sampled heaven. 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Sand' builds to a scenario where it sounds like the tinkling ivories are battling the angels of heaven or your imagination whereas 'The Number Song' sounds simultaneously like it's old school excitement, something approaching the here and now, and the very future. Scratching and the skattering, clattering drums. Just excitement. And things like trying to remember that this is all sampled music. It is not live. Just very much alive. 'Changeling' has swampy drums drowned in some muddy production before it takes off and that scratching arrives followed by that bass and then...
Listening to this now I'm struck by how fearless it is, how it taps into a neglected part of you. How it just is. How I struggle sometimes to believe there could actually be a mass market for this. For something this challenging.
You may want stand out tracks but if that's the case, i think I'm struggling. Music this spontaneous (and yes, I know it isn't and there's the trick, the very height of the artistry here...)washes over you as a whole. You feel it or you don't but you hardly worry about which track you're listening to.
Having said that though, if you did want moments, that tension in music when things just work, then you might, just might go for 'Stem/Long Stem'. It soothes and then it builds and then...
'Midnight In A Perfect World' is possibly the most perfect song title ever but i'm still stunned that the song itself doesn't disappoint. A most mellow start until the drums arrive but then keyboards soothe and soulful vocals double that effect. An undercurrent of scratching and repeated mantra-like vocals. Midnight. Midnight. Midnight.
I'm probably more stunned though by 'Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain'. That bass. That bass...And then those drums. And the spectral keyboards at the end. Where does he get all this stuff from? And what happens next? And it goes without saying that we will never have an inkling as to how he then does what he does and makes it all fit together.
'What Does Your Soul Look Like' is definitely the most perfect song title ever and as a song surfaces twice here. You decide which version you prefer.
When people talk about an album being groundbreaking they usually mean 'worthy' and not necessarily something you'll want to listen to over and over again. This though is groundbreaking in the real, the true sense of the word...things beyond. Just listen and expect to be swept away.
The beginning and the end of something not yet heard.
In Car Freestyle Session Instrumentals (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-05-20
DJ Shadow really shows the art of turntablism and blending vinyl records and sampling (and I mean at it's best). You really have to understand the type of sound that he is trying to create on every track, and it flows real nice. Most of the track vibe real well, something that a lot of instrumental tracks don't have that much, if at all. "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" is one of the tracks that flow so easily
There were some tracks that I weren't feeling too much. "The Number Song" really didn't stand out to me because of it's high energy and high live sounding effect. Also, I personally thought some of the songs were a minute too long (mostly those two song in one track songs). At a point, I was like, "Damn, how long is this song???". Also I'm mad that "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96" is only 35 seconds long. In my opinion, that is one of the best beats on the album. But thats all the bad things I can think of.
"Entroducing..." is one of the best instrumental tracks you'll hear. At a time in '96 when hip hop was changing, this would have been a breath of fresh air to hear (espically when people were starting to loose their origonality). This album blows The Outsider as well as Funky Skunk away. There are no vocals on here, except for the samples. This is just pure music to vibe to real easily. Whether if you're driving in traffic, or chillin' in your bed, or if your preference is jazz, or hip hop, this is one album that you will enjoy. Peace.

Early buzz on The Emancipation of Mimi predicted that this would be the disc to mark "the return of the voice"--the voice being that glass-shattering instrument that propelled Carey to bestselling female artist of all time status--and mostly it is. But because of the small army of talent involved in its assembly, the album is way more than just a comeback vehicle. For proof, try straight-ahead, look-out-Beyonce-Mimi's-still-got-it "Mine Again," or '70s-soul cuddle-up, "Circles:" a don't-attempt-on-American-Idol love song, or the gospel dazzlers "Fly Like a Bird," and "Stay the Night." But for songs that steer this disc directly into 2005, no looking back, scan the jewel case for the tracks followed by the word "featuring": "To the Floor," with Nelly, bumps along to maximum booty-shaking effect, while Twista spins his natural-disaster-force vocals into "One and Only." Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and Jermaine Dupri also pitch in; between them and the highwire vocals, Emancipation works the kind of pure-pop magic that sets us all free. --Tammy La GorceMore from Mariah

MIMI WHO?!.......2007-03-28
You mean our good old fatty Mariah Carey.
Hmm, not musch of a fan for the Mimi nickname, too much remindy of J.LO a nickname of her pop-fella Jennifer Lopez. Speaking of Lopez, I heard she got a new perfume line coming out...
Wait, I'm supposed to review MC's new album.
Can't I just smell J-LO?!
Mariah did grow as an artist and probably made her best song so-far with this album, but I personaly expected more with her new album.
The best song so far, earlier mentioned is offcourse WE BELONG TOGETHER! An absolute delight off the album, Mariah's best song ever!
BUT! There must be a BUT!
Mariah has been trough a lot and I espected a more serious album and more tracks like WE BELONG TOGETHER and DON'T FORGET ABOUT US. but Carey knows how to make an comercialized album... Who am I kitting?! No she does not!!! But JD or the hitmaker JERMAINE DUPRI surely knows what sells best.
Mariah fitted very well between these hip-hoppy club tracks with IT'S LIKE THAT, SHAKE IT OFF and other tracks off the album.
But, having huge ups and downs in her life I expected a more dramatic aproach to the album and more immortal tracks like WE BELONG TOGETHER!
I can for sure say that EMANCIPATION OF MIMI is an album that no one will remember 5 years from now! Mariah left a 5-minute impressions on everybody who was listening to the album. And this is just Mariah's last 5 minutes, but Mimi I was hoping for 15 at least! And the last thing I have to say is; good job, Mary, you at least made forget about Glitter!
