If merry Liverpudlians the Zutons really do have aspirations to marry Talking Heads with Sly and the Family Stone they fail miserably on Who Killed the Zutons?. There's a riot going on this debut album, but there's no bloodshed, just a mobbish custard pie confrontation between differing factions of pop history. Putting gimmickry to the fore, the Zutons start the album with their Monkees-styled theme tune "Zuton Fever", which could well be a cartoon voodoo version of Echo and the Bunnymen. Then the fun begins: obvious touchstones are the British invasion R&B of the Spencer Davis Group and the Animals (stompers such "Long Time Coming" and "You Will You Won't" are convincing vintage soul fakes) coupled with that awkward evolutionary blip in the 60s when white soulboys went psychedelic (see Zoot Money and Dantalion's Chariot). Add on some ghoulish surf guitars and creepy stuff about zombies, food poisoning and tropical diseases to keep fans of the Cramps happy and then append with the cheapest toy sax in rock since Laura Logic's punk parpings with X-Ray Spex. It works. Even so, the melancholic moments are the best, among them the Kinks-tinted, rainy-day ennui of "Not a Lot to Do" and the cruel-to-be-kind kiss-off of "Confusion" ("from day one, I led you on"). --Kevin Maidment

4 out of 5 stars I killed them!.......2007-02-14

great album, sort of like a 60' brit. invasion band gone crazy, with eccentric quarky lyrics, a saxphone, and a light hearted feel to it.
but that isn't to say there aren't a few deep heartfelt songs on the album, it has that too!

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare albums that holds your attention from beginning to end.......2006-12-19

Normally I don't buy an album after hearing just one song, but after seeing the Pressure Point video on MTV's Subterranean about a year ago, I knew I had to have this one. I had no idea that a year later, it would still be one of my favorite albums. I was hooked on this CD from the second I put it in my player, and it only gets better the more you play it.
It sounds strange but the B-movie feel and saxophone are what really set these guys apart from the rest. I'm currently waiting for their new album (Tired of Hanging Around) to show up in the mail. If it's at least half as good as this one, they'll officially be one of my all-time favorite bands.
If you are tired of all the same old carbon copied emo bands taking over the airwaves these days, give this one a try. You won't be sorry!!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Album Zutons.......2006-12-13

one again the brits have to show us americans what good music is , in world full of senseless overblown egohyped music of today that i don't care much for with the expection of a few bands music today sucks . The Zutons rescue us from the abyss of bland it's take one alex music consist of bands with no talent. the zutons have talent and they are fun to listen to with their musical tastes range from funk, old R&B and alittle folk infulence fused with new wave flavor. these guys hail from the same place as the beatles.

4 out of 5 stars Embrace a Zuton today.......2006-11-13

The Zutons are a fun band, a very talented band, and unfortunately a relatively unknown band,( at least here in the States). To me, there is something of a early Talking Heads vibe about them, distinctive vocals, deceptively simple songs, offbeat lyrics. Zuton Fever, Pressure, You will You won't, and Havana Gang Brawl are my personal favorite tracks. This is a strong first recording in my opinion, not perfect, but strong . Spread the word on this band, support their music, they deserve it. Dare to be different!

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2006-07-17

a friend of mine popped this cd on a long car ride last summer and ive listened to it at least a hunred times since. 5 stars, and i dont seem to see any reference to the rockabilly nature that comes through at times.

    Album Description

Beefheart worshipping Scousers with a penchant for skiffle-ridden pop. 'Who Killed The Zutons?' is quite possibly the best debut album to arrive from Liverpool since the La's proved there was more to the city than Lennon & McCartney. Energetic, inventive & constantly surprising, this is destined to be one of the albums of the year. Deltasonic. 2004.

Debut Album from the British Art Rockers who Fuse Sounds Generated by their Forefathers and Mothers to Forge a Fresh New Sound. Influences Range from Paul Mccartney to Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, War and Any Number of Bluegrass and Rockabilly Favorites.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2004-11-29

I'd only heard the single pressure point before I picked up this album, and I was pleasantly suprised to find the rest of the album to be just as good or better than that song. I'm hopeful that this band continues to produce this well in the future.

1 out of 5 stars bad band bad music.......2004-09-09

Very disappointed by this band...nothing new..no good melody...It is a CD that everybody will forget quickly

    5 out of 5 stars Epic Debut!.......2004-08-06

I just saw these guys (and gal) on Aug. 2nd, 04. Man, what a live set. This is one of the few bands that is hard to place. They definately carry a vintage vibe. There are some classic rock sounds, there are some nice folky songs (but not traditional), there is a bit of Mo-town, a bit of ska and a splash of rockabilly! Now blend it up, shake it, and play it loud. If you are not infected by the songs, check your head, eh?
This is the record that I hoped the band the Coral would follow up with, but they didn't.
Buy this and enjoy introducing them to you buddies.

ps...after the show (they opened or co/headlined) for Cosmic Rough riders) we were able to meet them and hang out for a while. Great people, great fun. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great cd form a great band.......2004-07-05

Despite some similarities with Liverpool fellows The Coral, The Zutons sounds so fresh and energizing to me that I cannot stop spinning the cd. They managed to successfully mix 70's influences such as Sly Stone and Talking Heads into a very personal formula. I haven't seen them perform live yet but I read positive reviews of their performance at Glastonbury festival. Highlights are the singles "Pressure point" and "Remember me". One of the best surprises of 2004, so far.
