5 out of 5 stars The beginning of modern king crimson.......2006-10-29

This album is, like many other king crimson releases, almost completly unprecedented. This album combines their early metal with their polyrhythmic rock of the eighties. They also continue with their pop trend. Basically, there are 6 instrumental tech metalish peices with many twists and complexities, sandwiched in between very catchy pop songs. This is a style which has continued to this day. This is why I call it the beginning of modern king crimson. Although king crimson has made pop and long instrumental metal peices before this, this album does them differently. The metal peices are twisted and convoluted, and the pop is more direct. This album features the double trio, a short lived idea where there were two on each instrument, which allowed for extra complexities. The main problem with this approach, in my personal opinion, is that it wasn't done to the degree that it ought to have been. Of course, going too far would certainly have alienated some fans, but a six peice band could theoretically play way more complex music then this. Most people would not guess that there are 2 drummers or 2 bassists. If I had my way on this album, I would have not shown any restraint on the tech metalish songs, but rather let the musicians release a fury of sound. That said, there is no major flaw in the music on this album. It is creative, complex, catchy, and contains sweet grooves. The title track is particularly cool, including the drum intro b'boom. I wish King crimson would make more of these type of tracks, featuring solos or duos leading into a main track like this. Another favorite of mine is the song "one time". Overall, if you like modern king crimson or if you have an open mind, check this out. Do not make this your first king crimson experiance, though. I would reccommend that you start with a compilation over all of king crimson so you know what you are getting when you pick up your first full length.

4 out of 5 stars what is this chaotic noise?.......2006-03-24

I had never listened to the double trio incarnation of Crimso; now I only wish they had been able to sustain the tension for a couple more albums. This is a study in fury with uncanny control and restraint. A Crimson sound that has the darkest side of Schizoid Man and the airy atmospherics of the 80's trilogy, but both extremes heavily updated. I don't think this is a good starting point if you are curious about the Crimson King. Try Red or Discipline first. It takes a few listens to start "getting it."

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-11-12

This is a great album. It has more of the 70's sounds to it. But then there's some fairly nice soul-pop on it, in the songs 'One Time' and 'People'. Other songs are more way out. Many of the tracks run into eachother, giving you the feeling of continuity.

My favourite track is 'Dinosaur' which is the most pop sounding and also the most prog sounding. It's a catchy piece of skewed pop-rock but has an extended instrumental section. There are some 'scary' moments on the album. B'Boom is a mood setter that works well as a lead into the menacing title track. My second favourite track is the lovely 'Walking on air' whcih is a lovely ballad that also has an ethereal glow, and features backing tracks.

The instrumental work is really cracking here, though not quite as amazing as stuff like 'fracture' (gotta be my favourite KC instrumental). The album has a strangely plaintive edge. 'One time' is very plaintive, as is the haunting 'Inner Garden'. The return of the mellotron is welcomed, and adds an eerie effect throughout, though they could have used it more. Usually 90's efforts from 70's bands are poo-pooed by most but this has a credible reputation and deserves it. 4.5/5.0

4 out of 5 stars Almost red good.......2005-10-29

The first post 70's album with the old sturm und drang. Don't kid yourself. Red is the heart of King Cristendom with 2 near misses on either side. This is the first album that comes close. Take it from an old hippie.

4 out of 5 stars Music to feel crappy to.......2005-10-16

Your wife just left you for another species. Your greyhound has contracted STD's from your neighbor's poodle. The state government has cordoned off your house to investigate the greatest outpouring of radon ever detected by by the EPA. The doctor tells you that he doesn't know what the hell it is, but its important enough to name it after you and your mother told you that she loved your identical twin more than she ever loved you, even though it died at birth. What is left in life? This CD; after one listening it would push you over the edge...

4 out of 5 stars I'm a dinosaur, someone's digging my bones.......2006-12-21

This is actually a very good record. It also shows the double trio (Robet Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Bill Bruford, Trey Gunn, and Pat Mastelotto) doing a very fine job. starting off with the cool instrumentals VROOOM and Coda:Marine 475 thru great harder edge songs like Dinosaur to mellower tunes like One Time and instant classics like People this album is the best of their latter efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Entrance of King Crimson in the 21st Century.......2006-11-16

King Crimson began the 21st Century in 1995, when they put out this outstanding record. From ballads to heavy metal with a progressive classic edge: essential stuff.

Thrak finds the quartet responsible for Discipline, Three of a Perfect Pair, and Beat in the '80s reassembled, with Trey Gunn on stick (a basslike instrument) and Pat Mastelotto on percussion joining original members Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford. Thrak is musically quite similar to the King Crimson albums of the '80s, but it has less of a tribal, rhythmic focus, giving the bulk of the space to the stringed instruments. Bruford and Mastoletto are present and active (check out "B'Boom") but seem to play more of a supporting role. Belew, back from his somewhat successful solo career, resumed his dominant position, providing all the vocals and plenty of his distinctive backward-sounding guitar work. --Adem Tepedelen

4 out of 5 stars King Crimson - The Debut Of The Double Trio.......2007-07-13

Yet another version of King Crimson emerged in the mid 90's with Robert Fripp putting together the "double trio" concept. Along with the 80's lineup of Fripp, Bruford, Belew and Levin the band added a second bass/stick player in Trey Gunn and a second drummer in Pat Mastelotto. I like this album a lot. It is a very nice mix of complex musical works and more accessible songs. There are several killer instrumentals to be found here including "Vroom", "B'Boom", "Vroom Vroom". The album also includes some really good vocal songs including the single "Dinosaur" with it wry commentary on band who much of the mainstream music industry considers to be a Dinosaur. "Walking On Air", "One Time", and "People" are all great tunes too. There are a few tracks that don't work that well for me including "Sex, Sleep Eat Drink Dream", but overall this is a very cool album. Of course with the lineup of musicians present here everything is played flawlessly and it is truly an album that musicians should love. Overall "Thrak" was a very nice comeback for King Crimson and for me ranks up with the best of their material.

5 out of 5 stars THRAK, capital letters fit this album.......2007-07-08

Luis Mejia (son) - finally, after their second split, King Crimson comes with a bright new future in the 90's. Even when the album doesn't fit the new music crowning of punk and grunge, King Crimson took their time to do another set of arrengements, as they NEVER do an album the same like another one.

Returning being a double trio, the band's aspirations are notably changed through the album; even when they can still put slow rythms showing rudeness in songs like Walking On Air, One Time and Inner Garden, they notably stablished in a much more heavy, hard musical pattern, not changing their style, just, as I said before, making arrengements to their genre of progressive rock. the use of a mild orchestra in certain songs is also excellent. The musical composition is not as great as it's shown in past albums but incredible as well.

Even in the heaviest songs like Dinosaur, People, Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream and almost every instrumental, it can be obviously noticed the effort they made to continue with cultural and complex sounds, notice that they were in their 49' or something like that. Levin and Gunn made a such incredible performances in this album, and thanks God they did demonstrate how they can perfectly adapt the Chapman stick even in the heaviest compositions. Belew's freaky voice is as good as ever, Fripp, well, I don't think he can make an awful guitar sound even if his life depended on it, and is a great start for Pat, too. The track B'Boom is an incredible track being their first percussion solo shows how the adding of new rythms and heavy improvisation has always characterized King Crimson.

Another aspect is that the album is not so accessible for casual listeners, because even I was shocked when I heard it. Heavy, soft, awkward, mature, perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Tends to spiral down into a molten buzz.......2004-11-04

What is the sound of two trios playing at the same time? "THRAK." Also, thud, clomp, and flump come to mind. Onomatopoeia aside, this CD does not represent King Crimson's finest moment.

Rather, the sound generated by these double trios tends to spiral down into a molten buzz, at times as harsh as the death throes of a dwarf star. Too often, the vast amount of energy the band generates seems bottled up with no place to go. It's the same "I've heard this before" riffs but times two, a wall of sound that at times makes one wonder if these folks actually played together or if this music was assembled later.

Then, there are moments of lightness, with songs like the two Inner Gardens or Walking on Air sounding perhaps more reminiscent of Jade Warrior's soft side than anything else.

Oddly, one of my favorite tracks here is the drum duo B'boom, because there is some space to breath and room for all the energy to dissipate. And Dinosaur and Vroom pack plenty of wallop and hearken back to the heady Crimson albums in the early `80s. Robert Fripp was and is a visionary, and while I laud his fearless risk-taking, I don't care for this much else on this dense, plodding assembly.

I realize any review that breaks from the KC's faithful Weltanschauung will not garner many favorable responses in this forum, but that's beside the point.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great CD by KC.......2003-05-20

Look, this is a great CD. I really dig it. I can play it again and again. Very fresh. And it is the last lineup with Levin and Bruford in the mix. Takes very little to enjoy this CD. While most KC cd's take a bit of warming up to before you can really get into them. This one is yummy right out of the box.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart..........2003-04-27

At the beginning of my foray into prog rock, the next name I heard mentioned after the likes of Yes and Jethro Tull were KC. This was the first KC release I bought, and it packs a whallop. Two guitarists, two bass players and two drummers make the musical interplay just unbelievable. As if that weren't enough, everybody (with the exception of Trey Gunn) in this band was already well established. Take Bill's crisp drumming, Tony Levin's expressive but punchy bass playing, add Robert Fripp's classic angluarity on guitar, Belew's David Byrne-like vocals, and a heavy dose of Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn on drums and Warr guitar respectively, and you have a band with a punch powerful enough to knock down the Berlin Wall in one hit.
