4 out of 5 stars Billy Joel - A Nice Late 80's Return To Form.......2007-06-12

"Storm Front" was an album that Joel recorded after he had the experience of being one of the first western rock stars to play in the Soviet Union the year before. The experience is reflected in some of the songs here especially the excellent "Leningrad". The album was produced by Foreigner main man Mick Jones and I have always thought this was one of Joel's stronger efforts and a return to form after several mediocre albums in the mid to late 80's. The album had two monster hits "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "I Go To Extremes" both of which are good songs. The third single "Downeaster Alexa" did not make as big of a splash, but I think it is one of the best songs he has done in it's description of career Fishermen in the Atlantic. Other highlights include the title track "Storm Front" and the previously mentioned "Leningrad". On the more average side Joel includes several love songs to his then wife model Christy Brinkley including "That's Not Her Style", "Shameless", and "When In Rome" none of which are really memorable. The album closes with a mournful tale of lost love called "And So It Goes" which is the type of song that Joel always does well. Overall I think the highs far outweigh the lows on this disc, and it is well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Big improvement over the original.......2007-01-10

I purchased this CD when the Storm Front tour took place in the 1980's. This version has been greatly improved over the original one. I lost my old copy and bought this as a replacement. I'm so glad I did!

2 out of 5 stars Too strained and "pop" for the Virtuoso.......2006-06-15

Looking back on this album, it really lacks any of the elements that make the "classics" by Billy Joel truly special.

Blow by blow:
"That's Not Her Style" - fun rock song. That's all.
"We Didn't...Fire" - Just listen to the music and ignore the words - this is just a terrible song.
"Downeaster.." - okay song
"... Extremes" - Pop/rock-ish; good piano solo.
"Shameless" - he should be for writing this one.
"Storm Front" - decent, but feels like he's forcing it.
"Leningrad" - interesting lyrics
"State of Grace" - nothing special
"When in Rome" - forgettable
"And So It Goes" - now this is a special song. If you really like the B. Joel songs that dig deep and you feel every note and lyric, this is the one. You're better off downloading this one song than buying the whole album.

Get yourself the "Songs in the Attic" album and call it a day.

5 out of 5 stars On the list of 80's guilty pleasures.......2006-04-04

I can't help it. I like this cd. Songs like 'I Go To Extremes', 'We Didn't Start The Fire', and 'Shameless' all bring back great memories of the closeout of one the greatest decades ever.

Joel has never been one to write serious social song as much as be a reporter of what's going on in society. So a song like 'We Didn't Start The Fire' makes no sense at all but the lyrics conjure up pictures of specific events that do mean a lot to listeners like myself. On a song like 'Downeaster Alexa' he does a very good job of painting a picture of a fishing boat captain. 'That's not Her Style' is just a straight ahead rocking type of song. It's more fun than anything else. But the song that is pure Billy Joel is 'I Go To Extremes'. He wrote this for his drummer but it has all the trademark Joel badboy wannabe lyrics we've seen and loved since 'Only The Good Die Young'.

This cd isn't going to change your life but it has some great tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Essential Billy Joel.......2005-09-01

Billy Joel's tenth studio album, "The Bridge" featured no very big hits and highlighted a more mellow style of songwriting than his normal, catchy, rock-beat songs of previous albums. People debated whether he was growing old, whether he still had what it takes to make a successful rock song. Some even accepted that, sure, a little bit of his flair is missing and his music is more "adult contemporary", but they'll take it.

And then came "Storm Front". Within the first fifteen or so seconds of the first song on the album, "That's Not Her Style", the world knew Joel was back to his old and great form.

Every song showed flavors of classic Joel: "That's Not Her Style" contained an infectious, catchy refrain with a dastardly beat reminiscent of "Half A Mile Away" on "52nd Street". "We Didn't Start The Fire", though not popular among critics and even fans, showed that Joel still knew exactly what pop industry needed, and the song bolted to #1 on the Billboard Charts. "Downeaster Alexa" displayed Joel's love of storytelling through song, as previously seen in "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and "Zanzibar". "I Go To Extremes" reminded us that Joel was and is the Hendrix of the piano. "Shameless" reassured us that, even after all those years, Billy could still make a meaningful, catchy, excellent love song. The list goes on and on. Every song reminds us, somehow, of Billy's roots in the pop industry.

There is no filler on this album. Everybody likes some songs, dislikes others. But nothing is low quality or uninteresting. So whether you buy this album for "We Didn't Start The Fire" or just because you're interested in the kind of music Billy can make, just be sure to buy it.

BOTTOM LINE: "I Go To Extremes"? "Shameless"? "And So It Goes"? Monumental pop hit "We Didn't Start The Fire"? How could this not be essential? Prepare yourself for some of the best pop-rock of all time.

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars HBO, you're idiots!.......2007-05-07

This was a great show, and the music is awesome. Haunting and wistful, it's great in the background when working or taking a bubble bath.

2 out of 5 stars best part isn't even by jeff beal.......2007-03-04

the tone for the shows music was created by wendy melvoin & lisa coleman...the theme they created is the best part of this cd. too bad more of the original music from the first season wasn't included in this compilation. also, just a correction to a previous post; the people who designed the main titles won the emmy, the jeff beal.

Lionel Richie's Back to Front isn't just a definitive greatest hits collection, it's a reminder of Richie's supreme strengths as an R&B singer-songwriter. From the gentle sweep of "Do It to Me" to the earnest lovelorn crooning of "Hello," Richie's ballads are timeless. Even the borderline sappy "Endless Love" shines despite cosinger Diana Ross's histrionics. Also featured is "Still" and "Say You, Say Me," and while the faster songs--the Caribbean-inspired rhythms of "All Night Long" and the '80s synthpop of "Running with the Night"--are weaker, they hardly detract from this otherwise sterling survey. --Courtney Kemp

3 out of 5 stars Truly.......2006-05-12

There are often times where a decent artist can make or break the best reflection of their career with a greatest hits record. While it is often desired as well as it could be, it is often declared as a miss. That has been the case with so many artists like Whitney Houston, Melissa Etheridge, and the late Luther Vandross. They've had a very wonderful reflection of music, but it wasn't that way with their greatest hits records. For Lionel Richie, he has been another example. His era of his solo works, and his success with The Commodores in the 60's and 70's, is arguably some of the most elequent works ever in the history of the Motown era, and his first greatest hits is a mixed reflection of good works.

Back To Front, Lionel Richie's 1992 greatest hits record, tries to do a good job at reflecting Lionel's solo works with his efforts with The Commodores in a convient package of music. The collection does have a lot of great songs that still remain defiant towards Lionel, and what has made him one of the most elequent singer/songwriters ever. The collection includes a lot of great songs from his career including Endless Love with Diana Ross, the Oscar-winning Say You Say Me from White Nights, All Night Long, Easy, and the tender ballad Hello. Although the album does include some great songs, there arguably could've been more added on that was overlooked from not just Lionel's solo works, but also The Commodores as well. The collection overlooks tracks like Love Will Conquer All, the soft and soulful Stuck On You, and Commodores tracks like Lady (You Bring Me Up), and Brick House.

All in all, Back To Front fairs well as a good hits collection reflecting Lionel Richie's career, but there just could've been a whole lot more to have been desired that should've been shown. I absolutely suggest you purchase the 2003 Lionel Richie Definitive Collection instead. It is a much better greatest hits record than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Picks Up Some of the Greatest 70s and 80s Love Songs.......2005-12-31

Lionel Richie reminds me of the boss at my first part time job workplace who had the exactly the same hairstyle and had similar face. Lionel Richie is a perfect student of Motown school and created some of the finest love songs of the 70s and 80s either during Commodores days and his solo works such as LIONEL RICHIE (1981) CAN'T SLOW DOWN (1983) and DANCING ON THE CEILING (1986). Also he contributed a lot to make ADULT CONTEMPORARY household words for ordinary music fans.

It is true that this compilation has some flaws seen from seasoned fans because it misses a lot of great songs that should have been here such as YOU ARE from LIONEL RICHIE or BALLERINA GIRL from DANCING ON THE CEILING. Yet for music fans that are new to him this compilation is an excellent guide to know his music.

EASY, THREE TIMES A LADY, STILL, SAIL ON comes from Commodores all of them are some of my all time favorites. ALL NIGHT LONG is a fun reggae-like pop song and one of my all-time 80s hits. RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT and DANCING ON THE CEILING are the power pop track with excellent guitar solo. HELLO, STUCK ON YOU, PENNY LOVER are the love ballads so unforgettable. ENDLESS LOVE duet with DIANA ROSS is the theme title for the film. Newer tracks are of lesser degree than all time favorite hits but enjoyable. DO IT TO ME might be for someone else to sing, say , LUTHER VANDROSS? MY DESTINY could have been CAN'T SLOW DOWN track.
MY OH MY seems to find a place in WE ARE THE WORLD soundtrack.

Verdict: All Time Favorite Compilation though missing some great songs.
Rating: 94 out of 100
Recommended for: Wide range of music fans who are new to Lionel Richie.

5 out of 5 stars one of R&B's best.......2005-09-06

Rewind 8 years: On my way to high school and BACK TO FRONT is playing on my mom car's stereo...Fast forward to present: and BACK TO FRONT is STILL playing, only this time on MY own CD player.

This album is a definite classic!!! "Back to Front" only gets better each time you listen to it and will have you singing along in no time. Richie's lyrics are plain, simple and sincere; the kind men write to their partners and pass off as their own. His voice too is absolutely phenomenal. This is one of the few albums you listen through without skipping a single track.

Listen out for top songs like "My Destiny"(my personal favourite).

From the first time that I saw you
I knew it was forever
This mighty love between us
Will keep us together
You're the girl God sent from heaven
I'm so glad I found you, Forever............Its lyrics tug at every last string....lovely lovELY, LOVELY!!

Other personal favourites include:
-"Stuck on you" - Doesn't seem to be on this version but it's definitely one of the better tracks.
-"Do it to me one more time"
-"Three times a lady"
-"Running with the night"
I definitely 101% recommend this album to all classic R&B lovers out there. Perfect for a lie-in with that special person..

5 out of 5 stars lionel.......2005-07-27

A superb lyricist, lionel's touching lyrics and superbly delivered vocals touch me every time. This cd is one to buy and leave on repeat all night long...

1 out of 5 stars The Very Worst of the Best..........1999-03-27

Stay far away from this album. Not only is there no trace of piano here, but it is overflowed with rancid pop songs, country styled flops, and senseless tunes with wierd sound effects. The only good song on this collection is "I go to extremes", and THAT can be found on the greatest hits album. Billy should have stopped when he had writer's block.

5 out of 5 stars Given up the piano???.......1999-03-10

This review is in reference to the one that came before. It states that Joel has "almost completely given up the piano in the album," which is a bit misleading. Actually, he delivers perhaps his strongest performance as a rock pianist (I Go To Extremes), and his most delicate (And So It Goes). Also, his writing is at its peak, especially on the stirring Downeaster Alexa.

3 out of 5 stars Billy Joel Not as his best.......1999-01-17

This album is a bit disappointing, not necissarily because it is bad, but it is just not Billy Joel at his best. It seems that he has almost completely given up the piano in the album and gone for a more fast-pace pop style. The album really lacked the punch that has come to be the trademark of Billy Joel. It is still enjoyable, I have just come to expect more from Billy Joel

4 out of 5 stars "Leaving the scene of the crime.".......1998-12-29

Actually, let's make that 4 1/2 stars. While Storm Front is not quite up to the high-water mark of Joel's Nylon Curtain and 52nd Street, it's close enough to make it one of his strongest efforts. Songs like That's not her Style, I Go to Extremes, and We Didn't Start the Fire(which upon its release as a single had to be one of the most-creative hits ever) remind me of Phil Spector's "wall of sound," an approach that usually masks mediocre songwriting, but in the case of these tunes, makes for a dynamic combination. The songs are perfectly crafted, melodic, crisp and strong. The Downeaster Alexa, written with Joel's daughter in mind, is amazingly un-syrupy, while And So it Goes is his most beautiful song.

'Bridge' and 'Storm Front' are both great. 'Nylon Curtain' has one or two really good songs, but the rest of it just isn't my style. As a set this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Joel Rocks.......2001-03-22

There are no bad Billy Joel albums!

2 out of 5 stars The Worst of Billy Joel.......2001-03-16

Seriously, these have to be Joel's worst albums. "Storm Front" is okay but the first two are ridiculously excessive and very unnatural sounding. This is Billy Joel at his most boring, adult-contemporary stage.

5 out of 5 stars A review from Mr. Entertainment Lover.......1999-05-29

This three box set contains Billy Joel Cds of The Bridge, Storm Front, and The Nylon Curtain. Billy Joel is one of the most talented rock stars out there. His music is a must for anyone, especially this set.

5 out of 5 stars One of Billy Joel's Best Albums from the 1980s or any other decade.......2006-10-29

Billy Joel ended the late 1980s phase of his career on an extraordinary strong note with the release of the album "Storm Front", featuring some of his best lyrics and melodies that he's crafted during his decades-long career. "Storm Front" contains a splendid group of pop ballads and rock and roll songs which encompas diverse musical influences ranging from country to folk and jazz. "That's Not Her Style", the opening track, is an uptempo rocker that is one of several musical valentines to then wife Christie Brinkley. "We Didn't Start The Fire" is Joel's compelling history lesson covering the nearly 50-odd years of his life which is sung to a fast rock and roll beat. "The Downeaster 'Alexa'" is Joel's elegant Celtic ode to Long Island fishermen, with a sizzling violin solo that could have been performed by Long Island native Dotty Moore (An old friend of mine who is a sensational bluegrass/country violinist.), and a heavy back beat from drummer Liberty De Vito that sounds as if it came from an Irish bodran, and not from his drum kit. Speaking of De Vito, "I Go To Extremes" is Joel's fast-paced rock and roll tribute to his long-time drummer, observing how he has lived his life "to extremes". "Shameless" is a classic Billy Joel ballad which owes more than a passing nod to country music, and was subsequently recorded by a leading American country artist, becoming a bona fide hit.

"Storm Front", the album's title song, is another pleasant rock and roll tune. More interesting is the next one on the album, "Leningrad" with its Russianesque melodies and compelling lyrics, in which Joel compares and contrasts his life with a Leningrad native who is approximately his age. "State of Grace" is another pleasant ballad that's a musical valentine to Christie Brinkley. "When in Rome" is a sly musical look at the difficulties that a couple face in having two high-powered careers, which, in this case, were Brinkley and Joel. "And So It Goes" is yet another fine ballad from Joel, that's musically not too far removed from "Just The Way You Are". Last, but not least, the sound quality of the original album has been enhanced substantially via digital remastering. Without a doubt, "Storm Front" has to be regarded as an essential Billy Joel album.
