Product Description
Oregon is Nice Beaver's 2004 and second studio album. The leader, Hans Gerritte seems to have listened to his Camel albums, as his guitar solos are certainly in the Andy Latimer spirit. Cyclops. 2004.

Excellent combos.......2007-07-12
These albums are a superb value for Jazz amateur. I discovered Roots in the sky which is as great as Out of the Wood. It's a Must to Have!
Do buy this for great music, but not for sonic upgrade.......2007-06-30
Everybody should know by now how great these records are. I own the Discovery-issued of each, and bought this on the promise/assumption of better sound...I personally don't feel that the sound is better. In fact I don't believe I can discern any real difference(s). If you own the earlier issue, you might still buy this to satisfy your curiousity, and then I suggest doing the right thing: give it away to turn someone on to this great music.
Finally!!! .......2007-03-13
YeeeeeeeHAW!! I just know someone in the industry read my review of Out Of The Woods and agreed that it HAD to be reissued. Better still, they paired it with the only logical album, Roots, which was made shortly after Woods and has very much the same vibe and quality, though not quite as many A-1 tunes. Still, it's a four-star album at least; in fact, when I talked to Oregon's Paul McCandless after a typically splendid Oregon trio show in Berlin in 1997, he said he thought Roots was their second best record, and he might know.
Two of the best albums from modern jazz's most unique group for 17 bucks is a helluva deal; Woods alone is worth 20 bucks (though let's face it, cds are criminally over-priced; I bought these albums new in 1980 for six bucks (the vinyl still sounds more open and real than the cds), and when cds came out in 1984 for 15 bucks, labels claimed that "once we recoup the costs of the disc plants, we'll price them at 7 bucks like vinyl." Yeah, bs!! They still never have, and artists still get the same royalty rate as vinyl...so who gets all the extra cash? Yes, the same scumbag labels who are whining about how cd burning and pirate downloads are "killing music". Bite me! I see more decent local bands than ever now, who survive by pressing their own cds and selling 'em for five or ten bucks and keeping ALL their own money from THEIR own creativity. F the middle man! We no longer need record labels, thanks. Please go curl up in a ball and die. That's what you deserve for not giving bands a chance to develop over time; these daze it's "sell a load or no second album". That attitude would have derailed some of history's greatest bands. Once again: major labels, please die in hell. Thank you very much).
But, I digress...
So yeah, this is what cds should cost, about 7 or 8 bucks a pop. Hope the remaster is as good as the elektra version of Woods from 1992. It IS one of the best-sounding records of any sort ever; I originally discovered it on a tip from a guy in my local audiophile turntable joint in 1980 when I asked for the finest recorded sound he'd ever heard, and he immediately said "Out of the Woods". Thank you brother, wherever you are now! Years of joy from one simple little question.
Btw, these two albums fit exactly onto one cd, if you need to burn a copy for the car...
If you buy these and don't love them, feel free to write me and I'll send you a coupon for a new pair of ears.

Customer Reviews:
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Dolorean's remarkable 2nd album - paving the way for great things.......2006-03-05
After their experimental first album "Sudden Oak" which showed great promise - "Not Exotic" finds Dolorean in a much more focused mode. Al James is a great songwriter with a strong ear for melodies that stick around, and an interesting way with lyrics. He has a great expressive voice too. The tracks I really enjoy on this album include "Jenny Place Your Bets" "Sleeperhold" "Traded for Fire" and "Still Here With Me". Sometimes they use a narrative style on brooding songs like "Hannibal, Mo" (and also "Benito's Dust - not included here but available elsewhere as a single release). This is an album for those times when you want to be quiet and thoughful, but it's absolutely beautiful and a real grower. The themes and styles on display here are developed further on their subsequent release " Violence In The Snowy Fields" and now I can't wait for their next release due later this year. In the meantime, catch up with their catalogue - it's very rewarding.
undiscovered band of the century.......2006-02-06
I like these guys more every time I listen to this album. I was fortunate to see them open for Doves last spring in their hometown Portland. After the set I felt like I was friends with the whole band. All their stuff is good, but this album stands out. Can't wait for the next one. Keep going guys...those who do hear it, love it. Sound similar to Great Lake Swimmers, another undiscovered great band.
but I still think it's love..........2005-07-14
I don't even recall how I stumbled upon this album, but I'm glad that I did; really an excellent piece of work by Al James. Wow. I hate trying to explain why I love an album, because I can never do any justice with words. Know what I mean? I guess it's just something that you have to experience. Anyway, there are nine songs on this album and there really is not a bad one in the bunch, which is rare for any album. Most of the songs deal with love, loss, deceit, etc., the usual suspects when it comes to a wonderfully mellow album such as this. Great album, please purchase it, if you don't like it I will happily refund your $$$. Highly recommended (I know you hear this all the time, but really this album is something special, go get it hurry)!
great cd.......2004-07-11
I happened to catch Dolorean opening for Cat Power and fell in love with their sound. The songs are wonderfully written and so insightful you feel as though a friend is sharing their most intimate moments. This cd has been in high rotation on my player and have turned on many friends to it who love it as well. Go see them live - especially in a small venue. There is still great music out there and Alex/Dolorean is playing some of it. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.
So much could be said.......2004-03-05
One of the best albums I've had the fortune of experiencing. Not going to get analytical, but the music is incredible, for lack of a better term. A secret too well kept.
And repeating what others said - if the opportunity arises to see Dolorean perform live, snag it. I nearly passed on their show, which would have been such a regret.
Could ramble on, but I need to zonk.

A suitably ambitious memento of the group's 30-year association, Oregon in Moscow is not a concert recording but a far-reaching exploration of the ensemble's substantial orchestral influences. Recorded over six days in the company of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the two-disc project (covering more than 90 minutes) highlights the venerable group's attentiveness toward tone, dynamics, and phrasing as much as its facility for transcending genres and rhythms. Producer Steve Rodby seated the quartet (founding members Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and Glen Moore, plus new, fresh-faced percussionist Mark Walker) face-to-face in the same studio (Moscow's State Recording House GDRZ) during the overdub-free recording, a move that imbues the CD with a rewarding collaborative spark. On several occasions, Rodby mentions in the liner notes that orchestra members responded to Oregon's group improvisations with shouts and stomping feet. The recorded outcome is often serious-minded and somewhat less lyrical than, say, Northwest Passage, the disc that preceded this project by more than two years. Abstract at times ("Arianna") and liberating at others ("Zephyr," "Icarus"), Oregon in Moscow seems to invigorate every artist involved, and McCandless seems especially adventurous in the orchestral setting. It serves as a fitting, challenging reminder that beyond jazz, world rhythms, and categories not yet defined, classical stimuli are another fundamental element in Oregon's free-range musical amalgam. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
Bravo!.......2006-06-02
About three or four years ago, when I was trying to update my cd collection of Oregon, (my record albums were long gone), I noticed that several of the reviews for "Oregon in Moscow" were not very enthusiastic, so opted for other Oregon recordings. Then, just recently, at a local store, I saw the Moscow set on sale, and couldn't resist the bargain price. Well, after one listen, I could have kicked myself for paying any attention to those early negative reviews.
The orchestral venture for Oregon's compositions was an amazingly, natural fit. It was like having heard a jazz chamber group with Eastern and Western influences for all these years, suddenly, have a symphony orchestra around them. With the orchestra, I was not only able to hear the beauty of those old sounds, but new influences, as well, like Villa Lobos and Bartok. Anyway, the result is truly memorable and one whose beauty you will want to listen to, again and again.
listen again........2002-10-29
yes, i agree that this music is wonderful.
now, put it on some really nice speakers, or really nice headphones, and listen to the amazing sound.
Astounding. An orchestra and a jazz group. All live. Coordinating with and inspired by each other. Usually a DISASTER. This, however, is a sonic masterpiece.
KUDOS to Rich Breen, the engineer.
WHO MIGHT LIKE THIS CD?.......2001-07-25
I purchased this album because of Paul McCandless. In my view he substantially enriches the music of Bela Fleck, so I expected that he would do as much for Oregon. I was not disappointed.
Anyone who enjoys both jazz phrasiology and classical music should find this album a great addition to their library. Its more weighty than Claude Bolling's classical-jazz. It's also more lucid and spacious than the orchestral recordings of DiMeola. I plan to purchase more copies of this CD for friends who enjoy the fusion of classical instrumentation and jazz improvization.
justly successful.......2001-05-09
Apart from the fact that for a full-price double-CD this is a bit on the short side (a total of 90 minutes of music), there is little to complain about here. I was a bit concerned when I first heard of the release and the fact that Oregon is backed here by a symphony orchestra, but the union turns out to be a seamless one. I expected to hear something like a series of modern-day concerti grossi, but instead the effect of the orchestra is to create an overall dramatic emphasis and ambience, with individual musicians trading off solos or blending into the overall stream. Certainly, the whole production is very much Oregon-, not the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra-, centered. Towner and McCandless especially are in great form, there is a good mix of new and 'classic' material (the renditions of "Waterwheel" and "Icarus" *really* sparkle), and one is constantly conscious of a high level of professionalism at all levels. 'Not the best or most representative single introduction to the music of Oregon, perhaps, but probably destined to become their best known work.
Exemplary Wind Playing.......2001-03-11
I applaud Oregon for sustaining its superb artistry even as it undergoes a format change. Most non-classical groups sound like muzak when they position themselves in front of an orchestra; Oregon simply finds a new dimension.
As a professional oboist, I have always found Paul McCandless' work an inspiration. An outside-of-the-box musician with speechlike communicative abilities on all the instruments he plays, he never sacrifices beauty of tone or technical hyper-virtuosity. McCandless is the only jazz star I have heard who would flatten virtually any competition had he chosen the classical field. Best of all, the lucidity and flash of all that technique doesn't stand alone, but infuses the music with a searching expression and beautiful sense of style.

Sounding like a cross between timeless murder ballads and the crisply emotive chamber folk of Nick Drake, Dolorean's third album finds them deepening their subtle resolve. Built around the songs and singing of guitarist Al James, this Portland, Oregon quartet are no mere songwriter's showcase. They are the sound of a true band, a fact which can be witnessed by the continually evolving interplay amongst the sympathetically matched players. The songs offer orchestral details which are sometimes actual, as in "Dying in Time," but are also written into the fabric of the songs. Their sturdy chord structures and slowly revealed melodies are full of subtle tensions throughout. Beautiful on the surface, these songs are broader and deeper than many of the Americana contemporaries they're often erroneously pigeonholed with. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful, thoughtful album.......2005-11-10
It takes a few plays, but this album totally gets under your skin. Al James is a very talented songwriter and has a great voice for this kind of material, sounding world weary at times, upbeat at others. The songs are very melodic and the band are augmented by other musicians to give a fuller sound than their first two records, but it's still beautifully understated - never overdone. The production and recording quality are really first rate - and they can deliver the goods live too. Particularly great songs are "Dying in Time" "To Destruction" and the title song. My favourite and most played album in a long time
A nice follow-up to a 5 star album..........2005-01-23
Being a big fan of Dolorean, my expectations were set high for their newest release "Violence in the Snowy Fields." 'Violence' proved to be a very nice record, mixing remnants of their previous "Not Exotic" with some new sounds. This album overall is more produced and lacks the "rawness" that attracted me so much to "Not Exotic." Singer/songwriter Al James does continue to do a great job at tugging at the heartstrings of the listener providing us with tracks like "Dying In Time" and "My Grey Life (Second Chances)." The CD is quite catchy and did grow on me after several listens.
Not as good as the last.............2005-01-21
Pretty solid album but not nearly as good as "Not Exotic". 'To Destruction' is a pretty good tune but the other 8 tracks are average. Frontman Al James is no doubt a terrific musician but I found it was difficult for me to relate to his lyrics in this one. If this is going to be your first Dolorean purchase, buy "Not Exotic" instead.
Mesmerizing combination of lyrics, folk, country and rock.......2004-10-27
The opening track of this Oregon band's third CD is one of the most mesmerizing country-folk-rock tunes to come around in quite awhile. The loping two-step tempo is layered with hints of psychedelia in the fuzzed guitar and drifting piano lines, and the bunched male vocals bring to mind the harmonies of The Band and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. A similar groove is captured on the title track as well, but the rest of the album has other styles on its mind.
At the band's core are Alex James' wordy folk songs and quietly rendered vocals; think Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, and the introspective desolation of Leonard Cohen. Strummed and finger-picked guitars are often balanced by strings, keyboards, vibraphone, and brushed drums that provide moodily shifting underpinnings. The most startling tracks feature vocals backed starkly by acoustic guitar and light touches of violin or keyboard, including the weary goodbye "My Grey Life (Second Chances)," dreamlike salvation of "Put You to Sleep," and autumnally Alex Chilton-esque "In the Fall." Drummer Ben Nugent brings a few tracks to a rolling boil, including "The Righteous Shall Destroy the Precious."
Like many in the quiet-is-the-new-loud vein, Dolorean won't jump out and grab your ears with catchy riffs or startling dynamics. It's the depth of James' lyrics, and the heart and subtlety with which they're rendered that stand up to repeated listenings and yield evolving appreciation. Play this for yourself, on headphones or on a long drive along a lonely road and its charms will reveal themselves.

Grab Your Switchblad and Motorcycle Chain.......2007-05-13
Marquee Moon is only punk record that I know of that is better than Guitar Romantic. This is what rock and roll is supposed to be, from the songs to the production to the tempos. I've owned this album for four years, and it has not gotten old one bit. It's truly timeless rock and roll, the soundtrack to your next drunken drag race or amphetamine-crazed fist fight. In short, it's the devil's music in its purest form, Blackboard Jungle circa 2002.
In an ideal world, the Hot Snakes and the Exploding Hearts would be my generation's Beatles and Stones, or our Nirvana and Pearl Jam, or our Pistols and Clash, or our Elvis and Jerry Lee. Or anyway, something really important.
Classic garage rock with a punk feel.......2006-06-08
The Exploding Hearts were a bunch of young kids playing a musical style twice their age but you wouldn't know that from their flawless recreation of the sounds of the classic rock n' roll/garage movement of the late 60's. Despite their youth, there's a timeless feel to their modern take on this genre as they belt through a series of rock n' roll originals that surely would have been chart toppers in that era. Helping this out is the absolutely retro straight out of the amp, fuzzy around the edges guitars and a strict adherence to blues based rock songwriting but with a superb flair for writing memorable songs that stick out from the considerable amount of bands playing this style past and present. They also incorporate some of the energy of the early British punk movement, keeping things moving at a brisk pace that keeps the interest level high from start to finish.
Beyond a couple almost ballads (they still rock!), most of the album is packed with upbeat numbers driven by raw, jangly guitars and almost non-stop lead guitar riffs. The lead work is especially good on this album, ranging from classic straight 50's greaser type solos to bold, anthemic solos that dominate tracks like "Modern Kicks" and "Rumors In Town". At times this comes across as a more poppy version of the New York Dolls but flush with the vibe and feel of a more straight rock version of The Undertones or The Vibrators. It has that same crazy punk energy but not the angry power chords, instead going with a more bubblegum rock style full of a ton of solos.
The vocals are fairly bubblegum as well with lots of back up vocals and tons of lyrics about girls but never come across as cheesy or forced. In fact they help to further cement their near perfect retro status as they sound straight off the teenybopper records of old, full of youthful energy for a brand new musical movement.
Sadly this first record is also the last as three fourths of the band died in a car accident coming back from a gig. Truly a tragedy as this was one of the best new bands I've heard in quite some time but at least they left this one gem of a record for us to remember them by.

they could have been big.............2006-05-11
Most people who adore the Exploding Hearts have the secret of this wonderful album kept. This may be a good thing, because it is cool for bands to have a cult following, espacially as good as this. I am sure that the Exploding Hearts could have been popular, but I think it would be harder to enjoy their music if they were. At least we are lucky enough to have an album like this. God bless the Exploding Hearts.
I really have never met anyone who didn't like them........2006-04-09
Every kid I've shown this band to either immediately fell in love with their incredible garagey power-pop sound or sheepishly added them to their 'favorites' list a few days later.
It's more than a shame that the band passed away in a van accident, but you've GOT to hear them if you haven't. They're absolutely incredible and their songs will stay embedded in your brain like superglue.
How can Rock and Roll sound so pure, take a look.......2005-12-28
Really, when you think about it shouldn't rock and roll be this easy to listen to, enjoy and even feel good about liking.
When I got into the Ramones, it was late sure. Of course there were these moments completely untouchable. It was unbelieveable, the kind you kind of wish were always around. As if you yourself are the band and can move around in the forefront. It's a personal path the soul takes through a forest of cartoon animals and houses. Yeah it sounds stupid and childish but shouldn't a spur of the moment feeling on an instrument too many people tell you how to play should?

Great CPD.......2007-01-10
Great Cherry Poppin' Daddies. An eclectic mix -- as usual. With this kind of variety, you may not like every tune -- but, you're bound to find something new you like, if your a CPD fan.
if you really love music..............2005-12-17
the daddies are for you. i am lucky enough to own all of their work and with the exception of ferociously stoned (their first release), they are all awesome. this is my #1 favorite cd out of all their work. an adventure in musical styles, you will be surprised with every song.
Buy this CD... seriously........2002-01-23
Everything I was ever looking for in music, I found in Rapid City Muscle Car. Skyline Drive is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is probably the most diverse album you can get and all of the musicians are as talanted as they come. I picked up the CD in an obscure shop on a vacation in Virginia, and it really is all I can remember about the trip. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that Virginia was borning, that's just how powerful this album was. Okay maybe a little boring...
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, or at least listen to the samples. All of them.
CPD is the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-24
The Cherry Poppin Daddies are a wonderful band. I really like this CD. Infact out of the four it is my favorite. It has all different kinds of music. The Lyrics are touching. As I said it before they are a wonderful band!
this cd w/o a doubt receives a 5 from me~.......1999-10-17
ok, well, i heard zoot suit riot on the radio, went out and bought the cd. I LOVED IT. so a couple of months later I bought this one, "rapid city muscle car." Quite frankly, i didn't like it. I put it away for a while. When I started to like rock and ska more, I got it back out and started listening to it. I listened to some of the tracks, grew to love some of them, avoided the rest. Then one day, I was in a, well, mood, where I just put it on, and well, more of the songs grew on me. I listened to the entire CD every day, just lettin' it run, u know. I started to learn the words and started to feel the music, and the great, let me stress that, GREAT, lyrics, got me to thinkin' this ain't no ordinary band. I would start singing in school, it was to the point where I would wanna go home just to listen to it!(if i wasn't doing anything more useful than sittin' at a friends house) I mean I have not bought a full length CD in like a year, besides the CPD! why u ask? because I didn't need to! I mean i bought singles and everything but this CD, and the Zoot Suit Riot CD have kept me goin' for like a year and a half now. So let me tell you ppl who came to read my review, if you think this cd is swing, well it is a little, but if you're like me and all you lived for was swing, consider this cd the revolution in your life. it sure changed me, and i guarantee you it'll change you- It got your swing, some rock, punk, ska, even a touch o' country. no matter, you'll love it, so buy it.

Gorgeous, Sad Masterpiece.......2005-06-16
This was the last Oregon album recorded while the brilliant percussionist and sitarist Collin Walcott was alive; he was killed in a car accident while this album was being mixed. It's a deep and rich collection of haunting melodies, boasting the classic Oregon telepathy and a plethora of instruments, with the addition of the very subtle and organic use of synthesizers. A brooding melancholy hovers over this album, which is uncanny considering the tragedy that was about to occur. The album's final track, "Crossing," however, glows with a bittersweet exhiliration that makes it the perfect sign-off from the original constellation of musicians that were Oregon. A dark gem of an album, and a must-buy for fans of the group.
An ideal movie soundtrack.......2004-12-07
Nobody's yet written a movie for which "Crossing" could be the soundtrack?
I've had the vinyl album (c. 1985), the cassette, & now the CD: the only recording for which I've acquired & still have all three (& over about 18 years). That incessant rolling-wheels tambourine on title cut always send chills up my spine.
My personal touchstone for music is whether it delivers a sense of urgency: this album does, with every tune. It sure does stay in the CD player.
Last by original lineup with Collin Walcott.......2002-11-25
Being a hard core Oregon fan for nearly 25 years now, it's hard to listen to this recording without a tinge of sadness as it's the very last recording made by the original quartet before percussionist/sitarist Collin Walcott's death in a tour bus accident. Too bad too as it seemed the band was possibly once again morphing into something slightly different. On the previous recording (simply titled "Oregon"), guitarist/pianist Ralph Towner had introduced synthesizers into this acoustic bands aresenal bringing in an even wider sonic pallette to the groups works. It's a shame much of the bands earlier output wasn't recorded for the ECM label (longtime recording home of all of Ralph Towner's solo albums)for the labels famous for the sound quality and attention paid to the sonic details of their recordings. All the same this is only the bands second ECM recording. Personally, I prefer this over the previous recording which seemed to be largely improvised in the studio. Here, the longer more "epic" pieces are really the ones that stand out. They also tend to be the ones that utalize synthesizers the most, and to great effect. "Queen of Sydney" (8:10) and "Amaryliis" (8:49)(both written by reedman Paul McCandless)are really the tracks that show the most depth and hint at a slightly newer direction for this band that, even at this point, had quite a few recordings under their belt. This is one of the few Oregon recordings where Ralph Towner wasn't responsible for most of the compositions oddly, which may account for the slight difference in the overall sound. Bassist Glen Moore, as usuall, contributes 2 songs built around some very earthy repeating upright bass patterns which the band typically uses primarily to solo around. There is only one Collin Walcott composition here, "Travel By Day", which was also recorded with the late Walcott's other group at the time, CoDoNa, a wonderful trio which consisted of the late trumpeter Don Cherry along with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. The version here is quite interesting since the instrumentation in these two groups are quite different. Ralph Towner contributes four compositions here, still actually much less than in usual Oregon offerings, and these, atypically, are among the shorter tracks on the recording. The title track, one of Towner's compositions, is quite nice. I find Oregon music far from avante-guard, however there's something about this bands music which is too "difficult" for most people and this album/CD would not probably be the place to start for newcomers not used to incredibly adventorous music. Maybe a better place to start would be the beautiful "Winter Light" (which, by the way, features one of my very favorite Oregon album covers, a photo taken by none other than Collin Walcott) However, for those who can handle more experimental forms of music, free-jazz, Stockhausen, whatever, then they could start here without hearing anything at all "difficult" with this beautiful expressive recording, the last by this great band with the original four members...49 minutes of a wonderful journey, great for late-night solo drives in your auto by the way!
Slow Simmer.......2001-12-12
Here is music that is challenging without being difficult. There are pieces that truly swing (The Glide), and ones that lilt (Pepe Linque), as well as ones that have a drama that stays with you (Kronach Waltz). Some of Oregon's records sound too slight, or distant, for my taste, but, for me, this one carries substance and emotion. I guess the real test is does it stay in the cd player- yes.

Desert Island Album.......2005-03-28
I first bought this album, on vinyl, in late 1975 or early 1976 - because I liked the cover. Knew nothing about the music. From the first spin, it was magic - and is no less so over the years. The music has a depth and complexity that rewards repeated listening with new revelations each time. 30 years of repeated listening. It has all the ineffable mystery, natural spirit, and grace of the Northwest coast. If I were stranded on a desert island, and could take only one record with me, Winter Light is it.
An Oregon Classic!.......2003-07-17
The music sounds exactly like Oregon, the state (of being), itself. It is pure nature and spirit, and excellent to listen to on your headphones if you're in the (Oregon) woods. (Of note, Ralph Towner and Glen Moore attended the University of Oregon where Towner studied music theory and composition before his studies in Vienna, Austria.) All four musicians soar on this album. As a bonus, listen to the subtle flugelhorn by guitarist Towner on "Tide Pool" and "Margueritte". Other great albums by Oregon are "Music Of Another Present Era", and the out-of-print "Roots In The Sky" and "Out Of The Woods". I heard them play at the Northwest Cultural Center in Portland, and they are GREAT live, too!
Oregon at its best.......2003-03-20
This is the album that got me interested in Oregon back in the 70s. I have seen them perform a couple of times and they are great. It is my opinion that this is their finest album.
Possibly even their best record.......2001-07-05
I wouldn't lightly make that claim, but I have been a fan of theirs since approx 1975 and own every one of their 20- or 30-odd records, and I'd have to say that this is Oregon at their most consistent & melodic. Winter Light was their 3rd record (if you don't count the ECM contract-bucking "Solos/Trios" and the prequel "Our First Record"), released in '74 and it sold me on these guys for a lifetime... Obviously ESSENTIAL and a good starting place for novices.
An excellent album.......2001-02-06
Ensemble name: Oregon Album: Winter Light Year: 1974
In spite of the fact that "Winter Light" is one of the early albums of the ensemble, mature, well thought-out pieces makes up the album. The beginning "Tide Pool" is a well-constructed, serious, long piece, in which each members of the ensemble had the opportunity to prove their skill. "Witchi-tai-to" begins with a wonderfully harmonized piano-playing rendering with deep feeling in which the strings and the bass join later. "Ghost Beads" is a great piece of brilliant team-work, but the most significant part is Ralph Towner's stunning classical guitar solo in the inside of the piece. This long, incommonly inventive solo-part is ample of variegated, colourful tunes which are in a moment sober and serious and a moment later gentle, sensitive, but in both case firm and of special caracter. "Rainmaker" is another magnificent full-ensemble piece which contains a marvellous piano solo too. "Margueritte" is a worthy end of the album. There are also many superb performances of oboe ("Tide Pool", "Ghost Beads", "Rainmaker", "Margueritte"), bass ("Tide Pool", "Ghost Beads", "Margueritte") and percussion.
