A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

nothing like it.......2006-10-01
Here is a quick primer on how to appreciate Marc Bolan lyrics. I think people are sometimes too concerned with content of lyrics, or expect to be moved or enlightened, and if something isn't presented with a poetic dignified air or something, then it is [...] Whatever, i know i'm making horrible generalizations. I've read people criticize Marc Bolan for being vacuous party rock or something. Don't trust anyone who makes such claims about Marc Bolan. Listen to some of these jems: you got a hubcap diamond star halo, just like a silet-studded sabre-tooth dream, riding sliding sorceress in your dungarees got me on my knees... (those are from the album 'The Slider', this is just a defense of Marc Bolan in general). He's not making a claim to high-art, so you won't get if you are into that fashion show. You have to disengage your need to seem intellectual. Marc Bolan is party rock a bit, but he is the party rock MASTER!
"Well you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black
Don't look back
And I love you
You're dirty and sweat oh yea...Bang a gong...get it on..."
Unlike anything before it.......2005-12-19
It is almost as mysterious now as it was then, although their influence can be heard in contemporary performers such as Devendra Banhart, and there were few clues to be had from Marc Bolan's previous work. This consisted of the two Decca singles The Wizard and The Third Degree and a single for Parlophone called Hippy Gumbo, all of which were relatively conventional moddish beat group ventures; followed by a four month stint in early 1967 with proto punk extremist mod-art band John's Children, for whom he provided lyrics and regularly beat up his highly amplified Gibson guitar with a heavy metal chain onstage, in a stage act which featured mock fights with fake blood - a far cry from Kingsley Mole.
When speaking of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Marc claimed to have been inspired by Ravi Shankar, which explains a little of the eastern influence though Ravi Shankar recordings seldom had the histrionic vocalise which featured on My People Were Fair...
As booklet note writer Mark Paytress observes, rock and roll was nearer the surface, especially on side openers Hot Rod Mama and Mustang Ford, both borrowing from the American surf and hot rod crazes of the early sixties, and The Wizard of course became re-invented as a live Tyrannosaurus Rex staple before being recorded in a third incarnation for the album T Rex.
This edition presents the album in both mono and stereo full versions. Marc Bolan was said to prefer the mono version because of mixing problems which had resulted in a thinness in the stereo version, but these problems seem to have largely overcome on this remaster so I find myself preferring the stereo half, presented as bonus tracks. These seem to be mixes of the same takes, although Dwarfish Trumpet Blues has an extra section, but the notes mention that four of the bonus tracks date from demo sessions recorded for Joe Boyd at Sound Techniques in late 1967.
The other bonus tracks consist of the single Debora (mono), which unlike the album was recorded at Advision, along with an alternate mono take; and early versions of Child Star (mono) and Chateau In Virginia Waters (stereo).
Marc Bolan went on to refine and improve the style he had introduced on this album, but no future albums could have the freshness and impact of this fearsome debut
Excellent Debut.......2005-01-10
Contrary to what a previous reviewer has stated, Bolan's vocals are not terrible on this record. His voice is less developed here than it would be on the later T Rex recordings (I noticed more of a quaver in his voice), but he sounds far from being a "retarded kid making a pathetic attempt to sing". In fact, I think he sings quite fine here if you ask me. His voice is admittedly a bit of an acquired taste, but then again so is T Rex in the first place.
At times My People Were Fair... sounds remarkably similar to some of the "freak-folk" artists (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom) who are currently all the indie rage. While this may not be the best entry point into T Rex's early work (A Beard of Stars is hands down the best from this period), it's still an excellent record.
Weak debut album.......2004-10-10
Marc Bolan would become a rock and roll superstar in the 1970s, as a part of the glam rock outfit T. Rex. However, before that incarnation of the band was created, an earlier version of his band, called Tyrannosaurus Rex, existed. This band isn't thought of as being a glam rock act like T. Rex, but rather as being somewhat of a progressive rock outfit similar to bands like sixties Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. The band's first album was released in 1968. Its title might just be the longest album title in rock and roll history. How does My People... measure up? Read on for my review.
I had really great hopes for this album, knowing it was Marc Bolan singing on it, and that many people had compared the band to bands like the sixties version of Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. Unfortunately, my expectations for the album were much too high. As soon as I started listening, I was gravely disappointed. Bolan's vocals were TERRIBLE. On this album, he sounds like a retarted kid making a pathetic attempt to sing. This is only made worse by the fact that so many of the tracks sound alike. Admittingly, there are a few salvagable tracks (mostly on the latter half of the album), but most of this album is disposable. I DO like the album's cover, but obviously, like with books, you can't judge an album by its cover. This album is NOT RECOMMENDED, unless you are a Marc Bolan completist.
Currently (as of October 9, 2004), there are two versions of this album readily available, although neither one is sold in America. One is the import version that Amazon sells. This is a good version in that it combines the stereo and mono versions of the album onto a single disc. The other version is a Russian reissue. It doesn't have any bonus tracks, but it DOES have an entire other album on the disc - Zinc Alloy And The Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow. I would have to recommend the latter version, as it is less expensive and has two totally different albums on one disc.
I was gravely disappointed in this album, but fortunately, it wouldn't serve as a premonition of Bolan's musical future. Not long after releasing this album, he would find his sound as a classic glam rock artist, and grow to be well-liked by audiences up until his death in a car accident on September 16, 1977. Skip this album unless you're a Bolan completist. Start with Electric Warrior or a hits compilation if you're new to Bolan's work.

Embryonic and more than a bit fey, but absolutely stellar.......2003-05-21
This, Tyrannasaurous Rex's debut proper, sounds (if one must have this sort of reference) like a strange combination of solo-era Syd Barrett and psychedelic-era Donovan with the Tolken-esque tendencies of any given "ethereal" progressive rock band thrown in. These songs are shimmering, playful tunes, many very modal, consisting of acoustic guitar, bongos, and the occasional fleet of overdubbed harmonies.
Yet the songs are *really good*. Mr. Bolan knew how to be a popster, as his tenure in Johns Children showed, and while this is strange pop music, it's still pop music. The melodies are infectious, and let's face it, that voice grows on you.
Verdict? If you're a fan of "pop-sike" in any capacity, you owe it to yourself to check early T. Rex out, "Electric Warrior" fan or no. You might be pleasantly surprised.
