Product Description
Quirky indie-pop chart botherers The Futureheads have already established themselves as Top 30 heroes with the spectacular 'Decent Days & Nights' & with 'Meantime' they look set to repeat the success & then some. 'Meantime' is a blisteringly spiky slice of angular pop from Sunderland's answer to Franz Ferdinand. Taken from the self-titled 2004 debut album. The title track is backed with one non-LP track 'Alms' (acappella version). 679. 2004.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD that was ripped off by a not so great genre.......2006-10-30

I know that I may get blammed for giving this a five, since this CD influenced nu-metal. But like Tool and Rage Against the Machine, i've never considered these guys nu-metal(i'd call it metal influenced by alternative rock and jazz). There's no rapping here, no turntables, no gimmicks, a various amount of influences, and the lyrics are actually intelligent, something you won't find in Limp Bizkit. Page Hamilton's vocals are fierce, and his guitar playing, while not godly, is still nice and catchy. He and Traynor played a "stop-start" style with their guitar playing, which was ripped off by the nu-metal genre. What nu-metal bands don't take into account is that Helmet didn't recycle 2 chord riffs and they actually have instrumental skill. Another thing is that Helmet actually plays guitar solos. The basslines are audiable(unlike nu-metal), and the drummer actually lets loose some cool fills. The two most famous songs on here are In the Meantime and Unsung, but my favorites are Ironhead and Give It. Instead of buying a nu-metal CD, get this instead. I know a lot of my metalhead homies will scorn this band, but at least give this a shot.

5 out of 5 stars A Mammoth Album.......2006-07-13

Strange....I keep reading all of these references to Helmet being the originators of nu-metal yet, when this album was released, the concept of nu-metal had not yet even begun to brew inside the mind of some soulless marketing executive, itching to brandish a newer and more simplistic sound to attract the masses with a short attention span. One can certainly make a path from Helmet to the spawn of nu-metal that followed a few years later if they felt so inclined but if you dig a little deeper, nu-metal only shares the most basic traits with this band that offered so much more to anyone who cared to listen.

In some ways, it almost seems strange to slap the "metal" tag on a band like Helmet. Sure, they wrote this album that is bludgeoningly heavy with songs that would blow your head clean off your body from the outset but beyond that, Helmet shared little with the dyed-in-the-wool metal bands from the early 1990's.

I suppose that this is where the whole nu-metal tag comes in, due to the nu-metal kingpins to follow utilizing the stop-start riffing that Helmet mastered out of the gate. However, those comparisons end when you get into these songs.

Unlike Korn and Deftones that followed, Helmet combined that riffing style with head-snapping time changes, absolutely monster grooves and a strange combination of vast musical influence filtered through a seemingly minimalist approach, all of this done with no use of samples, rapping or tortured soul gimmicks. Helmet was strictly about the music.

Maybe this is why their flirtation with the mainstream didn't last. They had nothing by way of gimmicks to offer the growing number of angst-filled teens that were a year or so away from the transition from grungy teen to Johnathan Davis impersonator. For those (and there are many of them) always on the hunt for the next fad to grasp onto for lack of true identity, Helmet provided those of us looking for music with substance an album that still could blow us away almost 15 years after it appeared on store shelves. "Meantime" is precisely that album.

5 out of 5 stars The gospel according to Page.......2005-11-02

From the moment I heard "Strap It On" blasting in a little bar in NJ back in 1990, I have worshipped Helmet. This album, in particular, represents to me the ultimate hard rock achievement - massive groove, killer guitar sound, and intelligent, angry lyrics. True, they never had a flashy singer with much vocal range, but a really dynamic vocalist would have sounded out of place over this music. As complicated as it sometimes got rhythmically, Helmet was always a very "minimalist" sounding band.

To the disinterested ear, this could easily sound like the same song over and over; all of the songs are in "Drop-D" tuning, and all but one (Unsung) are in the key of D. But the grooves that Page Hamilton concocted are tremendously diverse. He perfected the art of "adding a beat" to his riffs at certain key points, resulting in very subtle shifts that catch the listener by surprise; the solo in "Ironhead" and the middle section of "Unsung" are two prime examples. He also knew how to write riffs in 5/4 that flow naturally ("Better," "Turned Out"); and he came close to writing a big-band swing tune for Helmet with "Give It."

Sonically, this album showed a quantum leap over the low-fi production of their debut, "Strap It On." Every single note and drum crack is well-defined; the guitar solo in "Turned Out" sounds like a guitar vomiting. And "FBLA II" features John Stanier's all time tastiest drum fills.

If you never heard this album, I'm sorry you missed out on such an amazing band. But if this album came out today, it would still sound fresh! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A great start for a short-lived genre.......2005-09-18

At the time this album was released (1992), this type of music was called "alternative metal," but this album ("Meantime"), and this band (Helmet) were, for all intensive purposes, the start of the genre that we know today as nu-metal. Its heavy riffs, stop-start rhythms, and soft-hard song structures were the motivating force behind many `90's hard rock bands. Thus, Helmet should definitely be considered one of the most influential and important rock bands of the 1990's. Even super-influential bands like Korn, Pantera and Tool have cited Helmet as an influence.

Musically, it's clearly evident that frontman Page Hamilton listened to a lot of Black Sabbath while making this record. "Meantime" is full of sludgy riffs and even some Ozzy-esque vocals (which are especially apparent on the song "Unsung").

Songs like "Ironhead," "Give It," "He Feels Bad," and "You Borrowed" best illustrate Helmet's famous stop-start rhythms (and "Ironhead" even has fast, almost galloping guitars), and "Unsung" and "Turned Out" have the aforementioned sludgy riffs, which lurch and almost bob. Elsewhere,"In the Meantime" has a heavy, grooving main riff, "Better" and "Role Model" should quench your cravings for a heavy song ("Better" has some heavy yells, and "Role Model" has heavy, churning riffs), and "F.B.L.A. II" has a guitar solo and some everything-but-the-kitchen sink drumming.

For whatever reason, this album has aged very well (better than most nu-metal records). This may be because Helmet were such an original band, or maybe because Page isn't constantly yelling about "nookies" and hatred. Or maybe it's because "Meantime" has a few guitar solos, and guitar solos are foreign to almost all other nu-metal bands. But, whatever the reason, Helmet are not normally grouped with nu-metal bands, so they are one of the few bands whose albums sales didn't plummet when nu-metal collapsed. Thus, it's OK if your friends know you listen to Helmet--they won't laugh at you.

In conclusion, this is where nu-metal began, so if you hate nu-metal, you should hate these guys; but everybody who enjoys nu or alternative metal, and those who are fans of Korn, Deftones, Tool, etc. should definitely check out "Meantime." And even if you don't listen to Helmet, you should definitely give them props for essentially being a modern day Black Sabbath and creating a whole genre--even though that genre would die off about a decade later.

3 out of 5 stars Not The Party's best...but has some gems........2005-06-07

"In the Meantime, In Between Time" was released to tide fans over until The Party's "official" second album "Free" could be released. It kicks off with a bang, with a techno-infused cover of Dokken's "In My Dreams" which was The Party's biggest hit. Covers of "Private Affair," "I Know What Boys Like," "My Generation," and "Spiders and Snakes" also feature, with varying degrees of success, but their cover of "Peace, Love and Understanding" is their greatest track. They capture the songs feeling and it's message perfectly, bringing it squarely into the 1990s, and it still works today, more than ten years later. The rest of the album is basically remixes of tracks off their first album, and "Adult Decision" which was the B-Side of their "That's Why" single. While the originals are great tracks, the remixes are slightly less than thrilling. "Sugar is Sweet" loses it, erm, sweetness, and "Adult Decision" is just messy (the original was much better.) All in all, not a bad listen. I was crazy about this CD when it came out in 1991, but over time, I find myself more drawn to their other three releases, especially "The Party's Over...Thanks for Coming."

Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac's cool as an oyster chanteuse--ying to Stevie Nick's quirky yang--decided to pass on Mac's latest reunion efforts, prompting her former bandmates to insist that the icy blonde was fed up with the music business, and planned to retreat to her country home. But it seems that McVie was only fed up with her former compatriots, and stealthily recorded In the Meantime, her first solo album in two decades rather than participate in reconfiguring the seventies pop monolith. And just so we know she means business, she not-so-cryptically tackles the invitation from Mick, Stevie, Lindsay and John on the anxious and vituperrious "Bad Journey," leaving no doubt in fan's minds that she's shut the door on her past for good. Meantime finds the formerly winsome musician newly empowered with claws fully extended--penning songs that crackle with ire and ennui without any of the frothy self-deception of the past, whether on the casual hit-or-miss sex of "Anything is Possible" or the chilly kiss-off of "Sweet Revenge." --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better than rated by some.......2007-03-10

Regardless of Fleetwood Mac comparisons, I think this second solo by Ms. McVie is only slightly short of stellar . . . and I'm really quite picky about the music (especially the songwriting) I call really good. Most musicians/songwriters don't make the cut (my favorites are Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Lowell George and David Knopfler -- not quite so much older brother Mark, although I do agree he's quite good). My first listen to this album was enjoyable, my second was a smilefest. If you want to hear Fleetwood Mac, listen to Fleetwood Mac. Christine is still almost "Perfect" (her maiden name). Her voice is magic, the arrangements and production are first rate, and the songwriting is wonderful if not exactly legendary. Hard to expect much more. I rate this as a "must have" for any Christine fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great songwriting.......2007-01-17

Christine's new album, not unlike her solo album from the 80's has great songwriting...particularly the first five songs on the disk. Musically it is not very challenging...but if you like her voice and think that she is a GREAT songwriter, as I do, you NEED to get this album.

2 out of 5 stars Adios Perfection.......2006-12-10

Starting back in the days of Chicken Shack, I always longed for more of Christine. Her first solo album was wonderful (please remaster than gem), the second divine--the tour she mounted to support that effort resulted in a night of bliss for this listening. I was so glad when Fleetwood Mac efforts with CMc made it to cd, so I could program the discs to just play her songs.

And then there's this.

What a disappointment. My guess is that there's a lot more to her not joining the reformed Mac. This is such a poor effort. The songs are commercial in a way that her fine tuned songs that reached artistic or commerical success never had to stoop. Christine, there was a period when we loved you. This cd was a tough break up for me, but it's just time to tell myself it's time to move on. Adios.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars just for showing her face!.......2006-08-10

OK, I consider myself one of the consumate fans since the 70's and could get really critical here but I will show alittle respect and not be too harsh.

Yes, she sounds great.....no this is not her best songwriting ( ala "booze" ) and yes the comparisons to FM are unmistakable on a few tracks but unfortunately there are too many throw away tracks.

Friend, You Are, Northern Star & Giving It Back should have been on FM's 2003, SAY YOU WILL and we wouldn't be here leaving disapointing reviews.

Chris, come back to us

3 out of 5 stars Love Hate.......2006-02-22

A lifetime....

I have recordings of Christine's all the way back to Kiln House. I absolutely love them. I have even made my own compilations of only her songs for my personal enjoyment. So, it's not that there's just too much Christine here and that Stevie and Lindsey, John and Mick are missing. It just isn't an immensely enjoyable album to listen to. I would probably stop in my tracks to listen to every lyric of a single song from this if it popped in over the sound system while I was out shopping. But as a whole, to me, the album is too repetitive. As a huge fan, I can honestly say that she has given us decades of beautiful music and has certainly given more to the world than most of us reading/writing these reviews. Christine, despite what I feel about this album, when all is said and done, you deserve a lifetime acheivement award. That's how good CHRISTINE MCVIE is....

I should start out by noting blur's status as my favorite band, which would predispose me to liking this set. And I do, let there be no doubt about that. The packaging itself is luxurious, something few bands ever have the distinction of receiving. Not only is it a collection of the singles and b-sides, but their original sleeves are all reproduced, in high-quality. It sounds silly to include that as a note, but these are gorgeous reproductions. The booklet isn't much more than a compilation of different covers for different formats of the various singles, but it's on excellent paper and is worth flipping through. All this is nice, but, obviously, the focus of the set is the music, and here's where it gets interesting. All the live b-sides are fantastic, that should be made clear. blur were a formidable live act, and their skills are in full display here. The studio b-sides vary in quality, as is the case for most bands. I found the majority of b-sides for all the singles off Leisure and Modern Life is Rubbish to be passable at best, and I didn't even get through most of them. After that, the band really hit their stride, and it's a conistently entertaining listen. Definitely not a purchase for those not familiar with the band, but for big fans, it's a must-buy.

Blur may have strategically packaged all their singles and b sides in a cool case logic type packaging, divided them in 22 cds and 127 songs all in all, but it is worth it for all of you die hard blur fans. Blur singles are hard to find in America and so here is our answer. The lucky consumers will even get some live tracks. Blur's music have changed since their early years. The contents of the 22 cds will then cater to Blur fans who liked their music then and now. Each cd neatly enclosed in the singles' original cover sleeve, the whole collection may become valuable in the new millenium. Mind you only 7000 box sets are released, each with its own serial number.

    5 out of 5 stars It's like owning another 7 Blur albums.......2006-02-19

Blur made collecting cd singles a joy. That's why this boxset is so essential. Every song is quality (even Rednecks is a lot of fun), but the b-sides from the Modern Life Is Rubbish era has always been my favorite. I owned all of these singles on my own at one time, but when eBay FIRST introduced to me, I remember making like 90 bucks for the 2cd set on For Tomorrow, not to forget selling Popscene for $50, and Bang and the original There's No Other Way for the same...this boxset makes the grade. I like how if there were a part1&2, it's now on the same disc. Just great stuff. The only other band I think stood the test of time like this as far as really strong b-sides is Mansun. If you haven't b-sides from them, get Kleptomania. The fans picked their 14 or 15 on disc two, but again - every song is powerful.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Blur.......2005-08-18

Blur is, hands down, the best British rock band of the last 15 years (yes, even better than Radiohead...Blur did it FIRST, did it better, and without the ridiculous overhyping and pretension). This box set contains all of Blur's 22 singles (up to the point that this was released...they released 4 more singles....Music is My Radar, Out of Time, Crazy Beat, and Good Song) and their b-sides, all in the original sleeves. Blur is one of those bands (along with Suede) where the b-sides were usually top-notch quality, and that's borne out in this set. Check out Young and Lovely, Ultranol, Explain, No Monsters in Me, Bone Bag, Peach, Tame, Magpie, All We Want, All Your Life, and Polished Stone (just to name a few)! Fantastic. While this is hard to find, especially in America, for a true Blur fan, it's essential.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must.......2001-03-08

If you are a true Blur fan this collection is a must have. The packaging itself is superior. Very creative and thoughtful. The cover art for the CD's is high quality. The zipper case that nestles the CD's is first class. If you look closely the typical and funny thing about this set is that it comes in a plain brown box. So much for the packaging, which is an important feature for box sets. The music is what truly counts. The music speaks for itself.

Music That Tells the Story is the companion to spiritual guru Iyanla Vanzant's self-help bestseller of the same name and incorporates the principles laid out in the book. Blending spiritual wisdom with common sense, the author tells us how to come out of the "basement" and live vibrantly even while we're waiting to manifest our wildest dreams of love and connectedness. Vanzant calls this "the meantime"--a place one will revisit periodically through life's unfolding. Interspersing smooth inspirational R&B tunes with bits of juicy text read by the author, the disc espouses nuggets such as "Love doesn't hurt; falling into the traps we set for love makes us hurt ourselves." The songs, some cowritten and performed by Vanzant, are both old and new, and are sung by a group of artists including Kelly Price, Yolanda Adams, and Faith Evans. Successful in its mission, the recording is affirmation for a life fully lived in the absence of perfection. --Paige La Grone

5 Stars is not NEARLY enough to rate this magnificant cd. It's not just music but its spiritual and mental awakening at its very BEST. Each and Every Song on this CD is BEAUTIFUL and MEANINGFUL... at the least! And the interludes frmo Ms. Iyanla Vanzant are too valuable to put into words.... Anyone who knows hurt, anyone who knows confusion, anyone who knows pain and anyone who KNOWS they want Peace will find total joy in owning this disk. If you listen, you will be heard... meaning, if you listen to what she says, your inner most self will be heard... she touches a part of you that you neglect in so many ways... it's just wonderful... I heard this cd probably back when it first came out and I have been in love with it ever since... In fact, passing it along to my Mother, my best friend, and recommending it to anyone I feel would truly gain something from this remarkable delivery... I would recommend this cd to anyone who is trying to get thru life with their head up and their heart open... In these days, it's hard to live with an open heart because there is so much pain evolving but for anyone who wants some spirtual feeding, This is a full course.

For anyone struggling with relationships, this is the CD for you! Most of us have to be "told" when to take care of self! Play this CD as you are preparing to start your day, and I can assure you that your self-confidence will be more secure, your self-esteem will be raised and you will not allow any relationship, whether personal or professional to make you feel "less than." One of the best "self-help" lessons available.

    4 out of 5 stars killer album.......2005-07-07

The accepted wisdom (at least amongst my friends) was that SNFU only has one good album. Although none of us could agree on which one that was. My vote was for "If you swear you'll catch no fish". But after seeing a recent show, I took a chance on their new ablum- and I say! It rocks. Intelligent distictive hooks do nothing to soften the hard thrash. I now have two favorite SNFU albums.

5 out of 5 stars THIS WHOLE ALBUM RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-08

With something like seven years since their last full length album (FYULABA), I was so relieved after I heard this album for the first time because it's SNFU and it's just as rad as all of their other albums. This is now one of my favorite and most played albums .............ever. This is a must have for any SNFU fan, infact anyone who is into punk should have this.
