Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.

5 out of 5 stars I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good collection!.......2007-06-03

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.

Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music:Classic Hits of the 50's,60's&70's.......2007-05-09

If you like country music from this era it is a good sample. Many top ten hits.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful old songs remembered.......2007-01-18

My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe how many great songs are on this set.......2006-12-16

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

I hope there's a Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars GREATS HITS. HECK - EVEN THE MISSES ARE GOOD!!.......2006-12-13

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

5 out of 5 stars Starlight......Starbright!.......2007-06-23

Joyful! This is a star studded collection guaranteed to take you down memory lane almost hand in hand with Linda. Her intimate song stylings could even make standards and ballads seem like golden oldies, for she is vivacious, sparkling and exuberant! You may relive first love like it's a walk in the park. All of these songs about stars seem a metaphor for the singer...a star in her own right. In this collection are ten song titles about "stars" and even some moonbeams thrown in too. There are 8 songs in a row about stars. It's a rare and impeccable CD!

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten singers.......2007-05-14

This is a great album by a cute little gal with a big voice. Her songs were popular when I was a young man out of high school and it's great to relive them.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Scott album.......2007-03-14

Wow, really neat sounds. I loved the hits as well as the other songs on the CD. If you love the girl sounds of the 50's and 60's, you'll love this album! I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Linda Scott: Star Vocalist.......2007-01-13

Linda Scott was unfortunately an underrated talent by the media. She had a great vocal instrument and she knew how to utilize it to its fullest capacity. Her bright sparkling voice has an instant appeal. She knew how to phrase the lyric and deliver the melody in stunning fashion. She had many hits including the million seller, "I Told Every Little Star" which was recently featured in David Lynch's film, "Mulholland Drive". She was originally signed to a recording contract by the Winnipeg record mogul, Neil Galligan, who produced all the songs on this release. I treasure the fact that a local personality was responsible for bringing this great talent to a wider audience. I always felt that she should have had a broader following like Petula Clark. The arrival of The Beatles really put a damper on the American Pop Rock Ballad Singer. Woman singers like Lesley Gore, Connie Francis, Connie Stevens et al went into a sharp decline and had to find other venues for their talent. The British invasion had their pop rock ballad singer equivalents like Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield but their American counterparts like Gene Pitney, Bobby Vee, Ricky Nelson, Dionne Warwick and many others were relagated to the backburner. But now here is Linda Scott once more sounding great in a state-of-the-art compact disc. Eric Records deserves our deepest gratitude and highest praise for this superlative release. Perhaps, they might consider releasing more or all of her recordings as she never made a bad record. An artist of Linda Scott's calibre deserves to have her releases in public domain once more. I am certain her great song stylings will be appreciated by many old and new fans alike. It's wonderful that these songs are available again by this great singer. Linda Scott's time has finally come again!

3 out of 5 stars I can't believe it !!.......2006-02-25

Actually, I haven't purchased this item yet. I'm just thrilled to find it. I've been searching for the song "Starlight, Starbright" for years, without really knowing the exact name of the song. Long, long ago, when I was about to enter the 7th grade, I heard this song when I was at a friends house. The old 45 record had actually been purchased for "Don't Bet Money, Honey" but I liked the flip side better. Everytime that I went down the street to visit my friend Debby, I got out "Starlight, Starbright, and played it as loud and as long as she would let me. I've sung it over the years to my friends, but no one knew the exact name or who had sung it. Thank goodness for the internet....it saved the day. After long hours of searching, I've finally found THE song. Just had to share my joy! YIPPEE!

Album Description

Long after the one-two punch of Dylan and the Beatles rendered traditional material unhip, folk's influence continued to assert itself on the airwaves, as folk-schooled artists transported the songs and sounds of the coffeehouse into a new era of musical electricity.

This collection serves as your window to a time when folk music was as much (or more) of a fixture on the pop charts as rock 'n' roll.

These tracks were all once major hits or became standards in their own right or both and every one is by the original artist.

Some have been forgotten, some were reviled by purists at the time of their release and some can still be heard on oldies stations (or around campfires) to this day. But taken together, they reveal the glorious elasticity of the folk idiom, while refuting the notion that all great folk music must necessarily be politically oriented. If these tracks don't put a smile on your face, you must have been suckled by a lemon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a Hootenanny!.......2007-07-07

If you watched the ABC Hootenanny TV show during the Sixties this CD will seem a pleasant drive down memory lane. Although only a handful were true coffee house songs, this is a nice mix of the lighter songs of folk music. These were songs that played the airways of AM radio and could be heard on top 40 stations. Listening to this made me think of the political outcries and the dreams of youth making a better world. This will appleal not only to those that joined the Peace Corp, but anyone that likes music with good melodies and light to languishing verses. A must have for any pop or folk music collector. I have collected a number of folk music CDs and this is a favorite. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Folk Hits of the '60's.......2007-02-17

Teriffic CD that younger crowd today would appreciate since
majority of these great tunes go unplayed by mainstream radio.

4 out of 5 stars Good old stuff.......2007-01-06

If you like the golden age of coffee houses and folk music, you will love this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of memories.... but.......2007-01-03

I loved this CD. It brought back some great memories of childhood. However, I could have done without the Trini Lopez covers... I never heard them before I got this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just like old times.......2006-02-23

Oh joy! Like being back in Albuquere NM in 1964-67 and listening to my beloved folk station 24/7. There are a couple of songs here from the late 50's that carried over to the 60's The sound quality is pretty good too.It doesn't have that scratchy sound that some of the music that was originally on vinyl does.If you're an old hippie or maybe just hip get this CD.Almost makes me feel like I'm 19 again!

4 out of 5 stars Great Top-40 radio fare 1966-69 + lots of true stereo.......2005-05-14

The music industry may be bigger now than in the '60s, but it's definitely not better. The loss of radio listeners to other conveyances (MP3 players, Internet webcasts, etc.) and media (such as music television) has led to a fragmentation of pop music's audience and resulted in a balkanization of radio's formats. It's nearly impossible to imagine a commercial radio station that would program the variety heard on this CD.

Varese's fourth volume in this series focuses on the years 1966-1969, and gives a good sense of the variety that was programmed on Top-40 radio, including pop, rock, folk, soul and bubblegum. These work together on a variety of levels. There are soul songs ("Soulful Strut" "The Horse" - both, ironically, backing tracks to vocals releases that weren't nearly as successful) that segues with pop that has blue-eyed soul and jazz underpinnings ("Groovin'" "You've Made Me So Very Happy"), there are party-time anthems in both straight-ahead rock ("Mony Mony") and soul ("Expressway to Your Heart"), and there are all manner of pop tunes from Nancy Sinatra's lazy "Sugar Town" to the ear candy or The Archies' "Sugar Sugar." The freedom to create music for radio without strict genre boundaries lent itself to the era's ethos.

With the dawning of the '70s, independent record labels found themselves marginalized in a record business increasingly dominated by conglomerates. This volume amply demonstrates the savvy music business "ears" that created hits for long-gone labels like Roulette, USA, Bamboo, Soul City, Fraternity, Phil-L.A., Metromedia, Imperial, Sceptor, Sundi, Double Shot, White Whale, Abnak, Crimson, Dial, Date, Calendar, and Colossus.

Without tracks from the Beatles, Stones or the psychedelic and hard-rock camps (e.g., Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, Electric Prunes, Steppenwolf, Donovan, Vanilla Fudge), this isn't a complete exposition of the late '60s pop musical stew, but it is a generous helping of some of the era's most memorable radio hits, nearly all presented in true stereo. Only cuts 9, 14, 20, 24 are delivered in mono. Informative liner notes and detailed discographical and chart info make this a fine walk down memory lane for those who lived the era and a good introduction to radio's late '60s riches for those who didn't.

This is yet another terrific volume in Varese Sarabande's ROCK & ROLL series. Like its earlier volumes, you get twenty-five of the era's most popular hits. Not only were each of these songs top 10 hits, all but eight of them sold over a million copies each!

This series has not, however, been without its flaws. Just like the MID 60's release shortchanged the British Invasion (the predominant musical force of the period), this LATE 60's volume overlooks the psychedelic movement. I realize the difficulty in finiding top 10 hits that would fit this category, but the Jeffereson Airplane immediately spring to mind.

However, with that minor complaint aside, this is a solid collection of terrific songs with a heavy emphasis on soul and R&B hits like "Backfield in Motion," "Gimme Little Sign," "Expressway to Your Heart" and the instrumental classics "The Horse" and "Soulful Strut." The only thing that kept me from giving this a five-star rating was the inclusion of Boby Sherman's schlock pop hit "Little Woman." While this series has been far from definitive, it is a very satisfying collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
