With a career spanning more than two decades, Suzanne Vega has long stressed quality over quantity. It's no surprise, therefore, that her first release in six years is more than worth the wait. Her eye for detail, laconic vocal cool, and thematic focus on New York City continue to distinguish her artistry, but the sonic sheen applied by British producer/multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Hogarth sparks a musical renewal. Crisp guitar riffing recalls the streetwise work of fellow New York chronicler Lou Reed, while chamber strings, electronic atmospherics, and multitracked background vocals lift the results well beyond the folk realm. Vega writes from a perspective of memory and maturity, recalling the New York of old on "Zephyr & I" and "Ludlow Street," showing the musical sophistication of bittersweet seduction on "New York Is a Woman," applying a musical Brazilian wax to "Pornographer's Dream," and contemplating her life as a wife on "Bound" and as a mother on the lullaby "As You Are Now." The results are richly satisfying throughout. --Don McLeese

On Beauty & Crime, Suzanne Vega's Blue Note Records debut, the Manhattan native uses New York City as the backdrop for a collection of eleven new songs that juxtapose acoustic guitar-driven melodies with coolly synthesized beats; intensely personal lyrics with compelling, short story-like narratives; images of today's scarred cityscape with memories of Vega's old Upper West Side 'hood and Lower East Side haunts. The past commingles with the present, the public with the private, familiar sounds with the utterly new, just like the city itself. Making her first new studio album in six years, Vega says, "I feel like I really stretched my limits. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone--to sing in keys I wouldn't have sung in before, to work with different textures, to be unafraid of doing what ever sounded good to me. I wanted to make a modern classic."

Better than ever.......2007-07-19
Loved it from the first note. So reminiscent of her first album...yet modern at the same time. Marvelous.
Sounds Better With every Listen.......2007-07-19
This is the kind of music that seems to get better the more it's listened to. While I'm a big fan of Suzanne Vega and her music is instantly recognizable to me, I had hoped for a trailblazer. All of the songs are very reminiscent of something she's recorded before. Perhaps this is due to the small group she's using which can easily perform everything live on the road. The accordion was a nice touch on a previous CD. Maybe she can throw in a brass section (a la The Beatles, "Got to Get You into My Life" ) or use a few more exotic instruments, e.g., a sitar, on future projects.
I love this new CD from Suzanne Vega.......2007-07-18
I love this new CD from Suzanne Vega. She is such a talented musician and songwriter. This new album is proof of that. My favorite track is "New York Is A Woman." This is a beautiful song about the allure and romance of New York. "Zephyr and I" is another highlight on this disc. This is a great song about friendship. I love the beat of the song very much. "Ludlow Street" is a tribute song to the place where musicians get together to perform in Manhattan. "Frank and Ava" is a reference to the difficult relationship between Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner. This track has a nice retro sound. "Unbound" is a groovy track to dance to. I like this song vey much. "Pornographer's Dream" is an interesting song title. Suzanne's vocals are very soothing on this track. As You Are Now is an excellent song about enjoying all the little subtle things about a person The violin playing on this track is very pretty. I love all the tracks on this album.
Missed her.......2007-07-18
Well, it's been a while since Suzanne Vega released a CD, and the wait was well worth it. I didn't but the CD yet, just heard all of it online, but now I'm going to buy it as soon as I can.
Her voice, sweet and yet not fully clean. Her sound, something different, something we can only hear when she sings her songs. The lyrics of course...
I also hope I'll get to see her show in SF soon, was once in her performance and she was great...
As usuall a masterpiece.
Just what we needed.......2007-07-18
The long wait is finally over, and it's just as it should be. Her albums are always similar enough to be familiar, but different enough that each has its own personality and offers something unique. This installment is no different and has a secure home in her pantheon of classics.

The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making, but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actually started her career on the British boards (she was in The Pajama Game and 42nd Street), so her turn as slinky Velma Kelly isn't that surprising; Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart is more of a leftfield choice, but she shows she can handle the singing demands with pizzazz. The real revelation may well be rapper Queen Latifah, who belts out "When You're Good to Mama" with a marvelous affinity for the material. OK, so the R&B reprise of "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" by Queen Latifah, Macy Gray, and Lil' Kim fails to convince, while Anastacia's "Love Is a Crime" is just blah (rest easy, purists, it's over the end credits). On the other hand, the CD provides two bonuses: "Class," which was cut from the movie, and "I Move On," a great duet written by Kander and Ebb for the final cut. It's really easy to mess up film adaptations of Broadway shows. Happily, Chicago proves it can be done right. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A pretty good movie based on a musical........2007-06-13
This is a really good movie musical! It seemed that, within the last ten years, movie musicals have started to suck. This one was actually quite good. I saw many celebrities that I never knew could sing, like Richard Gere. What I liked most about this show is that, instead of randomly bursting into song, the songs were performed separated from the events of the show; they served more like commentary. It reminded me, somewhat, of the movie of Cabaret, which restricted the songs to the stage and served as commentary. This is an excellent soundtrack, and the songs are very jazzy. Some of my personal favorites are "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "We Both Reached for the Gun", "Mr.Cellophane", and "Hot Honey Rag." I recommend this CD and its movie to all.
She loved it........2007-05-12
I got this for a very close friend last Christmas. She is completely and utterly fascinated by this movie, its woman empowerment, the dancing, and especially (I eventually agreed) the fantastic lyrical and musical composition.
It's in her stereo, her mp3, HER HEAD, all the time. She adores it.
I'm not much for musicals, but I admit, the few scenes she made me watch were pretty nifty...
Worth every penny and more.......2007-05-07
I love this soundtrack, I can listen to Cell Block Tango and When you're good to mama, over and over. I was going to DL it from Itunes, but that version is missing a few songs and cost a little more.
All that Jazz.......2007-03-29
mm hmm i love this movie i love this soundtrack...i sing to it all the time...it always gets me going when i go out!! If you like musicals with an upbeat tempo...buy this one! The movie is fun too!...but dont take my word for it!! :)
He Only Had Himself To Blame.......2007-03-26
I heard this soundtrack two years beafore I saw the movie. But when I first heard the soundtrack I was... I don't even know to what to say. It just hit me. It was so great, one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. And the voice of Catherine Zeta-Jones is just amazing and it carries both the songs and the movie all the way trough. From start to fhinishi. And it never stops.
If you like musicals or just want a good music esxperiensse you have to buy this cd.

A new direction with a new lineup.......2007-05-18
This isn't Supertramp's first album although it was the first that most people heard. What might surprise people was that Supertramp started off as a prog band. Their first album had four members and no horns. Their original guitar player Rick Palmer would quit over the band's musical direction and end up as King Crimson's lyricist from Larks Tongues thru Red. Their first album Supertramp wasn't even available in the US until 1976. This is their third album and finds the band headed in a different direction and doing quite well at it. This was a monster hit album and ended up making the band one of the most popular band's of the '70's. To try and pick out any song would be tough as the whole album recieved a lot of airplay back in 1974 and 1975 and 1976...well, you get the idea. I have to admit I don't listen to it that often but when I do, I enjoy it.
Crime of the Century.......2007-05-16
One of our favorite cd's.Some of the best music of the 70's or better yet "EVER!" Every song is classic and will never get old. Super Tramp lives on!
Memories of City Hall Glasgow.......2007-05-13
Saw Supertramp perform this album in full at Glasgow City Hall, November 1974. They blew me away. The support act was a newcomer - Chris De Burgh. Every track is a gem. Typical of the best '70's progrock, this album is best listened in total and in begining to end sequence. That night I new I was at the begining of something special. The next few albums were all five star performances. Their live shows were note perfect and and enthraling. They can sound a little dated now. However the memories are magic. The line from Supertramp leads through current bands such as Coldplay and Snow Patrol.
This Is One Underrated Piece Of Goodness.......2007-04-29
The first Supertramp song I heard was Take The Long Way Home(great song). After that, I brought Breakfest In America. I liked it alot. Then one day, I was searching around on ITunes and I found this album. I read the reviews and all of them said this album was Supertramp's best. So I decided to buy 3 songs: School, Bloody Well Right, and Dreamer. That was a mistake. I should have brought the whole album because when I listened to those, I quickly became addicted to Supertramp. After listening to those, I had to buy the whole thing. After listening to the whole album without interruption, I had to ask myself: Why haven't I ever heard of this album? This could be the most underrated album in rock history. It's that good. The only negative I have about this album is the songs don't really connect that smoothly(think Pink Floyd).
SONGS:
School: Sounds alot like Pink Floyd. At first, I didn't like it. Then after listening to it again, I loved it.
Bloody Well Right: A song so catchy, it should be illegal. Keyboard work is crazy good in this song.
Hide In Your Shell: Just listen to it. It will blow your mind.
Asylum: A song thats haunting yet comical at the same time.
Dreamer: Great pop song. Listen carefully to the words.
Rudy: A pretty sad song. Great sound effects. Takes alittle getting used to.
If Everyone Was Listening: Very odd song. Many hooks to be found in this gem.
Crime Of The Century: Fantastic song. Fits well in today's world.
OVERALL: I didn't love any of these songs the first time I listened to them. Now I do. Give it time. It will touch you(in the good way).
Stranded on a island good!.......2007-03-07
Wow! This is Supertramp's 3rd album and how they have grown! The first two albums Supertramp and Indelibly Stamped were good and leaps and bounds ahead of what others were doing at that time. Something apperently clicked and a super band was born! Every song stands strong on its own merit here. If you are looking to start a Supertramp collection, buy this first. So if you end up stranded on an island and some genie grants you musical wishes, well now you know what to wish for.

It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast two minutes on average. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
CD COLLECTORS ARE BEING INSULTED ALREADY.......2007-07-17
Let me reiterate that 16 minutes is not an LP. I fully beleive in making a shorter album by removing all filler, but come on...this is not a full length album by any stretch of the esoteric imagination. I understand why spazzcore punk bands like Some Girls, The Locust, & XBXRX release 20 minute albums (because more would be clearly too much), but in this case it's not enough to do anything more than load my IPod with, and in which case why did I buy the actual CD? The robot pictures are cool and everything, but if this was a dollar a song, then that means most people are paying three dollars or more for the cover art. I have the strong suspicion that this will be repackaged later with more songs to try and get more of my money, when the band gets done being dragged around the world on a short leash by their management. All I'm saying is that I bought this used and I still wish I had bought the last Strokes or Interpol album instead. That having been said, this is an album of seven potential singles, which you should buy on iTunes. I would give it five stars for good music, but 16 minutes in this genre is false advertising. If this was five dollars and printed on small vinyl like an EP then we could talk, but at this price it's a full length record with one side blank.
Love every minute of it :).......2007-07-09
Although extremely short (16 minutes and 19 seconds), "A Lesson in Crime" is good from start to finish. Since there are only seven songs, there isn't room for any filler. Very fast-paced, fun and catchy...buy it!
Fantastic.......2007-05-15
I bought this EP knowing nothing about the band and without having read any reviews. It turned out to be a wise impulse buy. I love this CD. Lots of energy, quirkiness, catchiness, and no fluff. As for those who complain about the brevity of this release and the price: [1] it's an EP, not a full length CD [2] great music is priceless.
Fantastic - but not an album!.......2007-02-08
This is a really fantastic EP. But it's an EP! The other reviewers don't seem to be familiar with the concept of the EP. It's not a full length album! The album's out sometime 2007.
Cheer it on.......2006-12-23
I was skeptical about this band at first after hearing different kinds of hype from different kinds of people.
But I must say that I'm very impressed with this band.
Their music is innovative and interesting.
It's music that I can continuously go back to.
I'd really rate it at 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Also check out their Tour EP with acoustic versions of a few of these songs.

Bought This For One Song.......2007-06-27
iTunes doesn't have the English version of 'Coming Home', so I bought this album. I don't get why Peter Schilling was so big in Europe, I don't think he's that great. The title track is pretty good but I heard that it was produced later; it's got a rhythm similar to New Order's, True Faith. All the other tracks are fair to mediocre.
The Different Story (World of Lust and Crime)..........2007-06-02
My absolute favorite from Herr Schilling: Major Tom! 4..3..2..1!
Five stars!
Overlooked but excellent.......2007-02-11
I can't believe Schilling got such little airplay here in the states, especially in a time when synth rock ruled the airwaves. Schilling was way better than A Flock of Seagulls or Echo and the Bunnymen in my honest opinion, but the only song I ever remember hearing was Major Tom. This entire CD is excellent from start to finish, not only because Schilling writes such infectious melodies, but also because every song is put together extremely well. Pay close attention to the musicianship, all the performers are very talented. I'm not sure how many instruments Schilling himself plays, or which ones he plays, but he is a very gifted songwriter, and quite a charismatic front man. It's unfortunate that Schilling will go down as another Kraftwerk, Alphaville or And One, having a small cult following when so many more should have been exposed to his wonderful music.
EXCELLENT!.......2005-11-27
I love this album!
I'm a huge fan of Peter Schilling and I was very happy to have ordered this CD because I have played it so much because it's such a great CD! I love the songs from start to finish and I hope to buy his 1999 German greatest hits album to go along w/ this one!
Thank you Mr. Schilling for making such great music!
One of the Greatest Dance Club songs of all time.......2005-11-19
I began as a DJ in the 80's for my fraternity. I remember the first time that I heard A Different Story by Peter Schilling. I purchased the 12" dance remix and it became one of my dance mainstays at every event. People loved it and I loved seeing their reaction to the music. The lyrics and melody/beat are outstanding. Although I like Major Tom, I believe A Different Story is the best on the album. The rest of the songs are very good. The album is a great mix of different music. It is one of those cds that you will listen to in its entirety. I am just sorry that Peter didn't record more music.

Hard and creatvie.......2007-05-29
One of the best hard rock albums I have in my collection. My only complaint is that they go soft and pop-rock on a couple of songs. However, the vocals are great and the they have a unique and original sound.
I bought this album..........2007-05-04
the day it was released. I must say that I've been listening to it ever since. There's something about this band that really does it for me. "Albatross" is a great album that's packed with catchy hooks and melodies. I like every song on it! Ignore all the reviews out there that labeled this album as "average!"
very good.......2006-09-27
Good album, semi-typical. Suffers from somewhat inane subject matter, but with some decent lyrics.
Amazing Debut Release!.......2006-08-04
The Tooth and Nail record label is known for hosting up and coming, hardcore artists, and The Classic Crime is one of it's best to emerge this year. With a fresh sound and smart lyrics, The Classic Crime's "Albatross" is a wonderful debut achievement. The record starts off fast paced with the hard hitting single, "The Fight", and doesn't hold up until the slower tune, "Who Needs Air." The pace quickens again with the fourth track, "Blisters and Coffee", which features many change ups and a cool build up to the verses. The band's second single, "The Coldest Heart" is one of the stand out songs on the album. A very strong chorus. "All the Memories" has a catchy chorus, and a great build up to the end of the song. "Say the Word" takes a slight turn in sound, but nevertheless, is one of the highlights on the album. "The Poet" is the only song on the album that I feel doesn't mesh well with the others. The bridge is fantastic, but the rest of the song isn't as impactful as the others. As for the remaining tracks, "I Know The Feeling", "The Bitter Uprising", and "We All Look Elsewhere", they round out the cd perfectly. To close the album is the powerful ballad, "Headlights", which features some of the songwriter's great lyrics.
I give this CD 5 stars. Look for more from this up and coming band in the future!
Awesome CD!.......2006-07-31
After hearing the first minute of "The Coldest Heart", I knew I had to get this cd. And was I right! If you like Anberlin, Falling Up, Switchfoot, or any rock band for that matter, you have to get this cd.
1.The Fight (11/10) My favorite song on the cd. Probably one of the more hard rock songs. The ten seconds of commentary in the begining is a bit chessy, but whatever. The actual song is awesome. When you think the song just can't get any better...you're wrong. A great harder rock song.
2.Flight of Kings (8.5/10) Another good song with a cool chorus. Not much else to say about it.
3.Who Needs Air (9/10) A slower rock song, still very cool. A great change of pace. Great lyrics, cool song.
4.Blisters and Coffee (8/10) Personally, I think that the chorus is a bit corny lyricly, but still a good song.
5.The Coldest Heart (10/10) Cool begining with the quick octaves on the guitar. Another more hard rock song that you'll be singing along with in no time. There are many cool build-ups throughout the song. Another great one on the cd.
6.All The Memories (8.5/10) Like "Who Needs Air", this is more of a soft rock song. Still, it's a great song. Good lyrics.
7.Say The Word (10/10) The first few times I listened to this cd, I just listened to this song and continued onto the next track without really listening to the song too much. But I should have. This is a great song. The riff is very powerful, and the drums in this song really do a lot for it. The lyrics are also very well done, especially the pre-chorus where Matt's voice starts soft and distorted, then grows louder.
8.I Know The Feeling (7/10) My least favorite on the cd. I find the lyrics a bit corny and the song a bit blah. But still, it's an okay song.
9.The Poet (10/10) One of the more harder rock songs, like "The Fight". Very good song, awesome bridge leading up to the screaming after "It burns...my...EYES!!!!!!!" Great harder rock song. Again, good lyrics.
10.The Bitter Uprising (9/10) Great lyrics, a more catchy song. Good song.
11.We All Look Elsewhere (9.5/10) Another song I looked over the first few times I listened to the cd. The intro is very cool with the lead guitar playing, the breaks, then the solos inbetween. The chorus is also very good, the bridge (or bridges) are very cool too. The song changes a lot...kinda. Not slowing down, but just...different. It's a great rock song. Just check it out. You'll find out what I mean.
12.Headlights (9/10) A slower song. Great way to end the cd. Matt hits some higher notes in this song. It's a good one. I like the long "I will let you go" slowing down thing at the end.
Pretty much, if you like some good rock, this cd is for you.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.
Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20
After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.
Excellent!.......2006-08-10
Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.
Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14
I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Where do we go from here...........2006-02-04
This is an emotionally raw album of beautiful songs recorded in a makeshift/casual environment. As can be expected from Chris Whitley, the songs do not suffer for a lack of production. In fact, the organic style of the recording brings the audience closer to him, the gravity of the songs permeating deeper than if they had been studio-produced. The unique beauty of his music reamins subtle here, but somehow more intimate and direct.
The energetic highlights of the album draw from the artist's keen aptitude in musicianship, unfolding here more agressively than usual. Chris has somehow captured a vital creative essence in many of these uptempo songs. "Made From Dirt," "Dead Cowboy Song," and "God Left Town" are all excellent songs. All three are clearly a release, or rather, a forfeiture of his emotional outrages. So many artists resort to hitting their instruments more loudly or being too lyrically blunt. Other artists might be too subtle, nebulous or cryptic. Chris carefully lands on the rare poetic island somewhere between the two. "I Can't Stand It" is perhaps the most outright of the loud songs, though he did not write it, but he sure does reinvision it. It fits the album perfectly.
Quiter songs such as "Her Furious Angels," "War Crime Blues," "Invisible Day," "White Rider," and "The Call Up" shape the album into a dance between a despairing catharsis and hope with a sense of future wonderment. The wonderful song "Her Furious Angels" appears on a proceeding album in studio-produced form, however this original appearance is the stronger of the two. One of the album's most touching songs, "Invisible Day" was recorded live in a park. You can faintly hear birds in the background. That particular setting somehow makes the song utterly magical.
The album ends calmly with an a-capella version of "Nature Boy," which I feel is sung more for the meaning in the lyrics than for any sonic enjoyment. Chris' light, slippery voice merely embraces them, but does not exaggerate. It is all very fitting.
It is important to keep in mind that this album goes hand-in-hand with it's companion CD "Weed." Together, these two albums constitute a landmark in Chris Whitley's stripped-down catalog which began with the 1998's "Dirt Floor." We are wittnessing in these 2004 releases a profound ability to practically become one with the listener. It really seems otherworldly at times how far this music can sink in. This is one irreplacable artist who will be profoundly missed.
Key Songs: "Invisible Day," "Made From Dirt," "Her Furious Angels", "I Can't Stand It"
Chris at his best.......2005-04-18
Chris Whitley's War Crime Blues shows the talented songwriter in his best setting, his voice and his acoustic guitar. The songs here don't show Whitley reenacting the blues but rather reinventing them. The opening "Made From Dirt" is both furious and haunting as Whitley's voice wails over the chaotic setting comprised solely by his guitar. Other songs such as "God Left Town" and "Dead Cowboy Song" continue in this vein where the fury just takes the listener in and doesn't let go. "Ghost Dance" finds Whitley sounding like our generation's John Lee Hooker, just riding one chord and letting the emotion carry the song. The quieter but just as passionate tracks "Her Furious Angels", "Invisible Day", and "White Rider", which shows Whitley's voice sounding like an old 78 record, are also great tracks. There are also 3 cover songs here, all done completely different. The version of "I Can't Stand It" is more fiery than Lou Reed's version while Chris' version of The Clash's "The Call Up" is more laid back, emphasizing the importance of the lyrics. Finally, the a capella read on the jazz classic "Nature Boy" is a great albeit unusual way to end the album. Like many of his last few albums, it's quite short at 33 minutes long, but like those releases it's designed to be listened to one sitting, in essence letting the songs take you to another place. Quite simply, this is Chris is at his best. Better than Din of Ecstasy or Living With the Law? Yes.
War Crime Blues.......2005-01-06
Chris Whitley follows up last years low-key, but solid HOTEL VAST HORIZON, with what may be his best release since his staggering debut over twelve years ago.
Whitley has covered alot of ground sucessfully over the years, but I feel that his strongest work is when mines solo acoustic blues. Rather than using the blues as an excercise in nostolgia, he uses it as a springboard for explorig his personal demons in a modern context. He also manages to put his personal stamp on every composition including covers, such as the Velvet Underground's I CAN'T STAND IT and the Clash's THE CALL UP, which are included here.
WAR CRIME BLUES is an excellent album showcasing Whitley's talents as a guitarist, vocalist, composer and interpreter. There is not a weak track included. Those new to his work may be better advised to try his debut, LIVING WITH THE LAW or his excellent compilation LONG WAY AROUND first. Those that like what they hear there, or are already familiar with his work are then well advised to invest in this album.
Another great blues album.......2004-11-12
This album is another great work by Whitley, and it is a great complement to Dirt Floor. The most objective way to describe this album in comparison with Dirt Floor is that if they were a two-disc set (they're similar enough to be), then War Crime Blues would be the loud part of his acoustic blues work and the cd set. I really enjoy this album because it veers off from Whitley's previous acoustic work and is a lot louder and really brings variety to his discography. Besides it being louder, louder in the sense that he strums harder and is playing his music forte on about half of his tracks (not necessarily singing forte), i find that what attracts me is his vocal melodies blend together very well with the dobro he plays and, for the artist, this is an inspiring work to listen to because as a blues record, it is orignal, which says something in itself about the work.
compelling.......2004-07-30
after recording the quiet, ballad-based record Hotel Vast Horizon in 2003, Chris wanted to do something more urgent, more raw, and War Crime Blues is exactly that. From the first note, there is an aggressive sense of desperation that permeates the record, some kind of pissed-off melancholia. while not an overtly political record, "made from dirt", "war crime blues", and a cover of the clash's "london calling" among others comment on the shaky state of affairs in the world today. although this is a solo acoustic record like Dirt Floor, the production is very in your face and the songs are loud and noisy, so be warned. highly recommended.

Crime Mob Return Solid With This One..............2007-04-29
Despite a three-year absence and diminished membership, Crime Mob returned fairly unchanged on their second album, Hated on Mostly. Their crunk style of rap remains chiefly indebted to Three 6 Mafia and is highlighted by some potent productions, most of them credited to group member Lil Jay. "Rock Yo Hips" is the clear-cut single, tailor-made for club play and boasting a Lil Scrappy feature. "Circles" is the other standout, mostly because it's a change of pace -- relatively downtempo and sullen, built around an old soul sample ("Going in Circle" by the Friends of Distinction). There are a few other strong songs here, such as the title track and "2nd Look," both of which are rabble-rousing, if overly typical. What makes Crime Mob atypical, above all, is the group's pair of female rappers, Diamond and Princess. These young ladies are not only skilled rappers, but they're charismatic and good-looking. They distinguish Crime Mob from the group's innumerable, almost exclusively male contemporaries. Beyond the potent productions, handful of standout songs, and pair of female rappers, Hated on Mostly is all that interesting. It's a more mature and commercial album than the group's self-titled 2004 debut, certainly, but it still leaves plenty of room for growth to bump to.
Hate on.......2007-04-06
This cd is by far the hardest hitting album of the year. Crime mob has talented producers and a great crew led by two female rappers that go off on this cd, its crazy. The beats are fantastic and there are about 5 to 6 songs on this track that will blow your mind away. Such as 2nd look, rock yo hips, shine cuz I grind, circles, we some playaz and wuz-up. All of these songs will make you throw your hands up and get crunk wit it in your car or wherever you are. If you like hard lyrics and throwed beats then you deffinetly need to get this album.
My review.......2007-04-05
Im really feelng this cd on the real. I have not heard their whole first cd, so I cant compare it to that one (even though I probably have heard it without knowing as much as they played crime mob in the clubs, friends cars, etc.). I NOT BIG MUSIC LYRIC lover, because if I was, I would have rated it lower, but since Im not, this joint is Hot as hell. Definity a car CD to show off your speakers. ROCK YA HIPS track and VIDEO is BANGING (should have had some Alphas, but they were right with the QUE doggs LOL). I think the next Music Video should be Circles (my favorite track), because I dont remember them having a "slow song" video and it gives an oppurntinity for storyline (which I dont think they ever had any of their videos either). That is one of the few tracks that was saying something, and you can follow like a movie or story. They were wise for the first video to be ROCK YA HIPS. I was definity feeling theme. (even though I think the only time they probably been on a campus was working in the dining halls lol). The tracks do start to blend together half way through, but I think Rock ya hips (the premerie track) and Circles (the slow track) saved the cd. For me, its hard trying to concentrate on the lyrics because I will neglect the music. Over all if you dont want to think too hard, or if you like beats, or just that dirty south sound, this is the cd for you. ITs definity not a Kanya West, Nas, or Mos Def when it comes to lyrics (but what dirty south CD is now a days). This cd will make you put it on repeat a few times. Then after that, you will automatically start to hear lyrics (thats what I happened to me anyway) LOL
Excellent Album.......2007-04-01
This album is good you have to listen to it for a few times, and see where crime mob is coming from but Circles is a amazing track the production is amazing, and dymond and princess really do shine on the track. The other good track's are Go to War 2nd look, and Wuz up and a great 2nd single is Shine Cause I grind.
It's Okay...Just Okay.......2007-03-30
The second album from Crime Mob has no memerable moments on the album but it definitely has some crunk to it. The lead single "Rock Yo Hips" is a decent track but nothing here seems to top their most known single "Knuck If You Buck" but its a decent single and the video is alright. The female emcee's Diamond and Princess standout more on the album than the guys on "2nd Look", and on "Circles". It's not a horrible album but its not the best. The two females should go solo maybe they'll sell more.
