5 out of 5 stars DIRT.......2007-06-09

As a life long Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Fan and also having had the chance to meet and interview Dirt Band founding member John McEuen several years ago it makes my pirchase that much more special

4 out of 5 stars After 20 years, he still grieves........2005-07-12

While this is supposedly a 20 year career retrospective of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it only includes two songs from the band's first ten years. The first four songs cover the bands "pop" hits (although "Ripplin' Waters wasn't a hit), while the remainder of the album features their "country" hits. While the bands early years definitely get the short shrift here, most of the songs are good. It's a decent compilation that will be a disappointment to fans of the bands early stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Great Dirt From One Of The Best Groups Around.......2005-03-27

For all of the complaints about this disc(lack of early tunes, too country, too brief), folks seem to forget that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been around for a long time. Trying to pick the top hits from a band that has been consistently putting out great music is like trying to pick the best child in your family. It's impossible. Someone will get hurt because "their" song isn't included. Another person will cry because certain time periods or albums are focused on too much.

Anyway, take this album for what it is. It's a nice package of well known hits by a band that deserves the respect given to the top groups in country music. It doesn't include all of their greatest hits, but it has some great ones on it. Also, the price is great for such good songs.

Recommended to folks interested in learning more about NGDB who might have only heard songs like "Fishin' In The Dark" on the radio. It's not included here(but it is on their second greatest hits), but you will find "Mr. Bojangles," "Fire In The Sky," "Stand A Little Rain" and the brilliant "Dance Little Jean" and "High Horse."

If you think that too much of the album was focused on their hits of the eighties, buy their older stuff. If you find this album to be too country, go back to listening to Faith Hill and Mr. Faith Hill, I'm sure they're right up your alley. Leave the real country artists for the rest of us.

Thanks for reading my review. I highly recommend this disc.

2 out of 5 stars Too country.......2004-11-16

I gave this release only 2 stars because it de-emphasizes their best stuff. "Jealousy" is one of the best albums I have in my collection of 600+ albums. "Fire In The Sky" is an awesome song from that album. I really wish they would have released more stuff like this before they went back to hillbilly.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of NGDB's hits.......2002-02-24

I have the tape of this album. Twenty Years Of Dirt was released in 1986, the twentieth anniversary of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It has my three favorite Dirt Band songs on it: "Mr. Bojangles", "Ripplin' Waters" and "Partners, Brothers And Friends". The latter two songs were written by Jimmy Ibbotson, who in my opinion is the Dirt Band's best songwriter. The record also includes a number of other Dirt Band classics, as well as one previously unreleased song, "Stand A Little Rain". Bob Carpenter, NGDB's keyboard player, hardly ever sings lead on a Dirt Band song, but on "Stand A Little Rain", he does a fine job of singing. The reason I give this record only four stars instead of five is because one song on here, "Fire In The Sky", doesn't sound "country" enough, at least in my opinion. True, the Dirt Band was influenced by pop music as well as folk and country music. Also, Ibbotson, who besides the since-departed John McEuen was probably the band member with the most "country" musical background, was not in the band when "Fire In The Sky" was recorded(he left NGDB in 1976 and rejoined the band in 1983). However, I think "Fire In The Sky", on which Jeff Hanna shares the lead vocals with Kenny Loggins, veers a little too far in the pop direction with its saxophone, although the song itself is well-done. Nevertheless, that's a small shortcoming on a solid album. Overall, Twenty Years Of Dirt is a great collection. NGDB fans should have this one.

5 out of 5 stars Always Superb.......2006-03-19

The songs that Collin Raye chooses to record are ones that every human being can relate to. Words that turn into personal messages that only the listener can truly interpret. His voice is easy to listen to and his music is never disappointing. My personal favorite on this CD is "We'll Be Alright." There's a message in that one for EVERYONE no matter what circumstance surrounds them.

3 out of 5 stars Twenty Years & Change.......2006-03-11

There are several songs that almost feel like he's going back to his beginnings, and I enjoyed hearing those songs. I also like to hear how he's evolved over his career and I miss seeing him in concert to see him perform these songs live. I really enjoyed his take on some of the older songs on the album, he has a unique take on them and I it was quite entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Big Collin Ray fan.......2006-02-25

I've missed Collin's music. I thought the cd was good but wish it had more ballads which is where I think he shines. I hope it's a good seller so we get more!

4 out of 5 stars Hated it first, loving it now........2006-02-09

I am a great fan of Collin. The first songs I heard from him was Love Me. Since then I listened to every album and I like his talent to produce a great ballad with amazing lyrics.

Last week I received the cd and put it in my car radio and started to listen. I found myself skipping tracks to find the 'well known' ballads, and was disappointed to find only track 3 that comes close to 'In my life'. After all 12 tracks I was hugely disappointed and throwed the cd on the backseat.

A few days later I realized that I was thinking about some songs in my mind. Strangely enough the cd caught my curiosity and it went back in the cdplayer and played it at least 3 times a day since then.

This cd is something different and is very addictive. Raye has produced a good album again. Give every song a chance and you will be surprised by some of them.

A Collin Raye fan.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD this year.......2005-12-10

Combine the finest tenor voice in country music today, with an unerring choice of material, with great production, and what do you get? You get a CD that you won't be able to take out of your player for weeks. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Great Rocking Great Preaching!!!!!.......2007-04-26

This CD is nothing short of incredible!!!! It is song after song of head banging, ear bleeding music meant to draw you closer to Jesus! It was because of Rez Band I learned way back in the early '80's that you could be a long haired weirdo and still love Jesus... Because of Rez I learned that even if I didn't like hillbilly gospel music or hymns I could still be saved (actually I like them both anyway). The music production is also better quality than some of their earlier albums. If you're tired of the current mind numbing, anesthetizing, coma inducing worship music that's meant to bless you, and heal your various neuroses, etc, that is so popular these days, and you want music that will actually inspire you to turn your life around and live for Jesus then I highly recommend this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Christian Rock Concert Cd of All Time.......2007-01-10

Rez Band Rocks in concert!! This Cd is so dynamic and powerful. Definitly the best Rez band recording ever. I feel like I'm there at the concert as Glenn and Wendi share their passion through their music and their testimony. If you enjoyed the studio recordings of Rez, this Cd is definitly the upgrade. Rez is 100 times better live. The energy level is amazing and Glenn just never seems to run out of steam. No whimpy songs on this cd, just pure rock passion.

Album Description

"The Hallmark Sessions", recorded at Hallmark Studios in Toronto, Canada on November 28, 1961, were recorded when Lenny Breau was only twenty years old. This is Lenny's first professionally recorded Jazz session and, until now, has never been released. The original analog reel-to-reel master tapes have been in the possession of Lenny's former manager, George B. Sukornyk, for over forty years. In addition to several Jazz standards such as: It Could Happen To You and I'll Remember April, Lenny also performs several solo Flamenco and Country & Western pieces, as well as four previously unheard original compositions. Lenny recorded seven tracks with acoustic bassist Rick Danko and drummer Levon Helm, both former members of the group The Band, as well as six solo guitar pieces at Hallmark Studios. In addition to the trio and solo tracks, there are also six bonus tracks that contain the Stereo versions of the trio pieces. All tracks have been professionally mastered using 24-bit digital technology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the "Rough".......2004-09-08

Anyone who had been playing guitar for 40+ years would love to be able to play like Lenny does on this album. Coming from a 20 year old, it is simply unbelievable, unless of course, the individual is Lenny Breau, perhaps the greatest guitar genius of his time (or any other). His greatest years were ahead of him, starting with "The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau", but these sessions give us a rare preview of his potential. Jazz, his main love, is primarily featured, but his skill at playing Travis-style picking, which he did so well, as well as flamenco-inspired playing, made him unique as a guitarist. Only Danny Gatton mastered as many styles. Lenny is always a delight to listen to and we should be grateful for every new batch of recordings uncovered. Lenny rules !!!!

4 out of 5 stars Technique to Burn and Even Some Taste From a 20-Something!.......2004-04-13

I haven't heard "Boy Wonder" yet, Lenny's little precocious guitar kid album, because I love the later, more introspective and deeply touching music from Lenny, after the years of pain from his addictions, and the bad choices they cause us who were/are addicts to make, scarred and sensitized him with their sorrows. So I was a little reluctant, but I bought this CD because I had to check Lenny out as a 20 year old cutting his first official jazz album, with Rick Danko and Levon Helm no less!

Absolutely fantastic use of his great prodigal prowess on guitar. It is hard to believe he had only been listening to jazz for a relatively short time, and beginning to practice and learning to play it for even less time. He sounds so fully developed, with of many of the licks and techniques down that dozens of world class oldtime jazz guitar players made entire careers out of.

I hear Barney Kessel in many of the up tempo single note cascades. I hear some Joe Pass in the trio stuff, when he's mixing the chordal passages with single note cadenza-like outbursts of sheer enthusiastic shredding. My only criticism is he is hung up on using one too many pull-offs (from pinky down to index with left hand on a single string)in one too many places.

Overall, another exhilarating, exciting, rewarding addition to the best of the best of chordal jazz guitar collections possible, by a young master high up on his game, with unimaginable peaks and valleys to come.

5 out of 5 stars Love the new Lenny Breau!.......2003-09-25

Love the new Lenny Breau! Congrats on continuing to spread the sounds of one of the most unheralded of guitar giants. To hear him cross every musical boundary and genre from THAT early on is just astonishing.

5 out of 5 stars Many thanks for making this gem available........2003-09-23

Just got the new Lenny Breau CD a couple of days ago. What can I say? The guy just blows my mind! I can't believe the guy was playing as good as he was so early on. I knew the CD would be good, but it far exceeded my expectations. Many thanks for making this gem available.

5 out of 5 stars Lenny was unbelievable..........2003-09-23

Lenny is one of my all time favorite's. I thank you folks very much for bringing this CD to the world. Lenny was unbelievable.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

5 out of 5 stars How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

Album Description

Glenn Shorrock's voice is knowing, worldly, yet smooth at the same time. Classy AOR has usually been the main format, but Shorrock always brings a noticeable edge to any song he touches. You can hear it on this stellar collection, which encompasses Shorrock's time with three legendary Aussie bands: the Twilights (the undisputed 1960s pop classic Needle In A Haystack), Axiom (the unforgettable, uplifting Arkansas Grass) and, of course, the Little River Band (the brilliant Home On A Monday and Cool Change). The 34 tracks also include many samples from Shorrock's solo career (Rock'n'Roll Soldier amongst others) and reveals precisely why this (British-born) singer is regarded as one of Australia's finest.

Album Details

Before He Formed the Little River Band in the 70's, Shorrock Had Been a Member of the Twilights (Famous for their Single "Needle in a Haystack") and Axiom, Popular for their Hit "Arkansas Grass". This Double Disc Set Celebrates his First Twenty Years of Recordings with These Major High Points as Well as More in his Solo Career. He May have Been Born British, but Australia Considers Him One of their Very Finest.

I have listened to The First 20 Years so much and taken it with me so many places that I am now looking to purchase my 2nd copy as I have just about worn my first copy out. Glenns incredible vocals will never disappoint you as he will take you to another place. This is the very best variety of his work thus far and I am excited he is perfoming again with BSG as they are incredible!

Been following Shorrock since the early days of LRB, actually talked to him once in Primm, NV (stateline). Loved his solo album after he left LRB the first time... great stuff. Love hearing his voice again.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

Johnny Nicholas is a genius of the blues and R&B. Too bad his output, typically on small labels, is so sparse. Find "Too Many Bad Habits" on Blind Pig records as an example. He covers a variety of R&B genres here: Texas, New Orleans, hard blues, to great effect, with guest stops by Marcia Ball, Kaz Kazanoff and other stalwarts. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars almost best of.......2005-09-03

this cd is almost the best of the exploited. it's good to see they've included songs from almost every album.... except one. what the hell happened to horror epics?? there's definitely some good stuff on that album. i figured they wouldn't have put anything from death before dishonor on it, but they did shockingly. It's a good cd if your lookin for sumthin that basically spans their whole carreer, but a being a person that owns all of their albums i wouldn't buy it, but then again i have no need to, i can make my own.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME COMP !!!!.......2005-08-08

For the uninitiated;this cd shows a little chronological history of the band,a demolishing choice of songs, from their excellent first singles to the latest album. The appeal here is the variation in styles the band suffered during their 25 years of career, from a primal oi/hc crossover through speed metal and somewhat back to the roots without loosing the metal edge at the end.Be warned, though, that this cd may be dangerous for your economy, can cause you to end up getting their entire discography !!!!!!
    Enjoy !!!
