Editorial Reviews
Grunge-laced guitar riffs pounding over ethereal melodies, beaten back by alluring harmonies. Picture Nirvana with P.M.S. meets the Go-Gos on massive amounts of steroids and you'd be getting close.

Album Description
British singer/songwriter Mark Crozer has released his second album for the independent Tinderbox Productions record label. Unnatural World showcases his maturing talent as a singer and songwriter of Beatle-esque Retro-Pop. For this outing he's dropped the 1980's synth-sheen that coloured his first release (1999's Shining Down On Me) and has instead opted for a more organic sound. That's not to say that the album doesn't have its poppy side. Better Than The Truth is a three-and-a-half-minute gem that is rich with three-part harmonies, chugging guitars and a chorus to sing along to. Elsewhere, on songs like Rise and Fall and Surrounded By Love, Mark demonstrates a more minimalist approach stripping down to just voice and acoustic guitar. It's perhaps on these songs that Mark is in his element.Lyrically, Mark expresses unusual, almost psychedelic tendencies. In Surrounded By Love, he sings about getting lost under the sea (a recurring theme after four years spent living on the Pacific Coast) and growing to like it. Rise and Fall and Unnatural World, the album's title-track, display more socially conscious content: the inevitable collapse of the Western World as we know it. It's not as depressing as it sounds
The album's greatest strength though, is Mark's voice. His soothing, almost whispered vocals and haunting melodies float over a background of simple acoustic guitar work, reminiscent of Elliott Smith or Nick Drake, and remind the listener that often the simplest things in life are the most beautiful.

Good for a few tracks, not so great overall........2005-09-01
A nice dark album.......2000-08-07
For Completists.......2000-07-27
"Unnatural History III" isn't one of their best: in fact it isn't even close. For that, I would recommend "Windowpane & The Snow" and "Love's Secret Domain". UHIII's shortcoming is that of most - if not all - compilation albums: lack of cohesion. In other words, the pieces on offer here sounded disjointed when played one after the other. However, it should be remembered that the point of this album (alongside UHI - II) was to release Coil's music found on EPs, other comps, outtakes, rehearsal tapes, etc.
Now having said that, there is much to praise about this album. I ordered this CD from my local record store for track 10 "Lost Rivers of London" which would have to be one of the darkest, and most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. It brilliant captures that 'mystical London' of an Arthur Machen story, or of dark rumours about Jack the Ripper, underground occult groups, etc. I first heard an excerpt on Coil's website (http:/brainwashed.com/coil) in early 1999e.v., and the piece has haunted me ever since.
The CD also has excellent photos of Balance and Christopherson, and some interesting artwork.
Most of the CD is reminscent of "Scatology" and "How to Destroy Angels" - i.e. harsh, discordant, 'stream-of-consciousness' music, rather than Coil's later, stylised, music.
There is the unfortunate inclusion of "Music For Commercials" - 10 mins of bland, uninteresting music. Unless this is an example of Coil's notorious black humour, or to show that Coil can indeed produce banal, tedious music, this is a pointless inclusion. I can appreciate that, by necessity, advertising music must be bland and 'catchy', but why include it? That aside, I would recommend this release for those who have purchased the bulk of Coil's 'proper' releases (LSD, Horse Rotorvator, Scatology, etc.), enjoy their music, and wish to hear their lesser know music. For those who have done so, you won't be disappointed.
Standout tracks: "Meaning What Exactly?", "Scope", "Lost Rivers of London"
A nice collection........2000-03-14
