It doesn't get much better..........2007-07-07
For an album like this to come out in 2007 is just another reminder that no, hip-hop is not dead, it's just a little harder to find (for another near-classic 07 release cop NYOil's HoodTREASON). The production is not only on point, it is mesmerizing, poignant, and as such the album's replay value is through the roof. Of course, as other reviewers have said, the X-factor here was the trio of debuting emcees, Kevlaar 7, Phillie, and Salute. All of them have the ability to conjure up images in the listener's mind that would make him swear he was watching a movie - Ghostface and Raekwon anyone? Only this isn't mafioso rap, it can at times be politically driven and at times be introspective. The wordplay is good, although they're not as quirky as Wu; they have their own style. The bottom line: you need this album. It is the best hip-hop album so far this year.
Loved it.......2007-05-09
Ever since Wu-Tang indie culture, and the Bronze Solo it felt like finally there are some new releases for me to listen to. The beats are solid, lyrics are tight. Great Album.
Good, but expected more.......2007-05-08
Man, I was so hyped for this CD. I've been a Bronze Nazareth fan since his superior work on "Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture," and his own solo album. I love his beats and he's decent on the mic. Now fast fowarded to 2007, he recruits his fellow Detroit natives, Keevlar 7, Salute & Phillie to form the Wisemen. These emcees are no slouches, and they can hold their weight. The only problem I have with the album are the beats. Bronze's beats are not as groundbreaking as his previous productions. They are bland to me. But some tracks keep me intrigued such as "Iconoclast" (Killah Priest kills it, very underrated), "Associated", & "Honor's Promise." I was let down by the track with Planet Asia & Prodigal. Now you got two of the most aggressive spitters in the game, but it seems that Planet Asia would of spit better if the beat was more up tempo. And why is Prodigal on the hook or in fact singing? I ain't gonna let these cons outweigh the pros. Add this album to your collection, you will be satisfied.
Bringing it back!.......2007-04-27
First impressions ARE important and as the cover art work suggests some quality work has been put in here. Just bought this and although I'm not to familiar with some MC's on here, Bronze and Killah Priest aside, they all bringing some quality skillz to the mic. Beats an that sound new and fresh. Just go buy it if you love HIP-HOP.
Wisemen Classic.......2007-04-04
This album has enough knowledge that you wouldn't have to go to summer school......It might be too much for an average WU-FAN, but it is a must have for all the diehard fans out there. Much like Bronze's 1st album, this album teachs valuable lessons. It is real hip-hop, not that water down, r&b bulls--t....Great lyrics and beats....and would GZA and Prodigual Son be on a fake album? I don't think so! If you like Killah Priest's albums, and Think Differently, you will like this album

Best Hiphop cd i have heard for a long time.........2007-03-01
Start to finish this album is off the hook BUY IT NOW all i got to say.
(About the review i was reading below from "Jesus A. Garcia "Powder" he said "beats from RZA" but just wanted to let yall know RZA did not touch this album Bronze produced all tracks)just wanted to clear that up.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2006-10-14
I thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD. Bronze is a renaissance hip hop head, producing and MC'ing. With so much garbage out there, I really appreciate his lyrics and creativity. He brings consciousness and street life together well. Bronze uses lots of old soul music samples which also set this CD apart from most other artists. I would describe the sound of this CD as Wu-Tang throwback, reminissant of Liquid Swords or Wu Tang Forever and all from a Detroit cat. It has that gritty head banging effect. My favorite song on the CD is 'Hear What I Say'. In it Bronze describes his journey thru the corporate hip hop world and what he did to land his record deal. Also he touches on the type of garbage music that he was bypassed for.
If you like real hip hop (not the grown man finger snapping variety), then cop this joint. It is a CLASSIC! Peace

"I'm migrating".......2006-09-08
I would give this five stars but I did have some minor issues with this album. There were a few spots on this gem that kept it from being cohesive. I can't help it I grew up with cassettes and that's how I rate an album. If I feel tracks don't feed into each other, it throws off my enjoyment of an album. That's my only complaint on this album. Other than that I was really glad I copped it. He is well rounded artist, good lyrically, great producer. Be warned though, the dirty production is comparable to Bobby Digital's "Digital Bullet", maybe a little dirtier. I will keep this one in rotation for some time. Thanks Bronze Nazareth for your contribution to hip-hop.
Get it!.......2006-09-06
Heard Bronze on the Wu- Tang: think differently LP, and liked his flow. Definately one to cop, and tell your friends about. Flows and beats are amazing, refreshing to not hear bout rims and bling on an entire album. Real music. If u liked the think differently album, u'll like this.

Product Description
WHISKY SUPPER, is our fifth CD, ALMOST LIVE the companion to BANGER FOR BREAKFAST. We have found that our live recordings seem to really capture who we are, musically and dynamically. On this recording, we had Tyler Spencer re-record the didgeridoo parts - hence ALMOST LIVE. We are an interactive band; we try to engage with our audiences so an instrument or two might get quieter or louder at some points. Don't worry, one or another of us is probably playing on someone's table or having a quick 'beverage' in the middle of a set. While you may hear the odd slip here or there, with this recording you'll feel the energy of our live show! Slainte

Monterey Games.......2007-05-15
I first saw the Wicked Tinkers with my family at the August 2002 Monterey Games and greatly enjoyed the band. They are fabulous live. I have since bought everything that they have released. To this day my kids still ask for bagpipe music and dance about the house to it. This CD does a fair job of capturing the feel of their concert. It needs to be played LOUD (name of one of their other CDs) though to get a true feel. It is one of the best live CDs I have.
eclectic celtic cavalcade.......2006-03-13
This CD is a great companion to the Banger For Breakfast CD, as both have very similar settings, i.e. live in front of fans in a tight atmosphere. For any fans of Irish or Scottish traditional music, this is a must have. But better yet, it's updated with what initially seems like odd pairings of instruments, like the bagpipes and the didgeridoo. Once you listen to how well those sounds plus snares, etc. meld into a wonderful set of tunes, however, you will look at Celtic music in an entirely different way. Plus, the band inserts humor and jokes, sometimes at their own expense, that gives their performances a funny and relaxed feeling. Each song is uniquely rendered but still has that familiarity that makes this genre of music so appealing. You simply can't go wrong with this one, from the nearly dirty poem to a new style Radar Love, and will quickly become a huge fan of the Tinkers. At nearly one hour in length, it will leave you wanting more. Thankfully, they have plenty more available!

wow!.......2005-05-13
This is a fantastic CD from the Bronze Buckaroo! He's sounds GREAT! I'm a huge fan of Westerns and greatly admire Mr Jeffries contribution to Western cinema. I'm glad Mr. Jeffries recorded these songs and I'm very happy to have this CD in my collection. It's excellent!
Herb Jeffries is a National Treasure!.......1999-10-21
With the release of "The Bronze Buckaroo (Rides Again)", Herb Jeffries, the great Jazz singer of Duke Ellington Orchestra fame reprises his days of cinematic glory as America's first and only Black singing cowboy - The Bronze Buckaroo. This superb CD was recorded by Mr. Jeffries in his 84th year of "vintage" and, having heard some of the same songs included herein in their original versions (recorded in his "prime" in the 1930's), I can honestly report that the 1930's were NOT Herb Jeffries' prime - the 1990's are! This man has perhaps the greatest baritone voice (still complete with his legendary 4.5 octave range) of the 20th century. I could go on but no words of any mere mortal can do justice to this man's work. All I can say is this... if you like Western/Swing music, with this CD, Herb Jeffries defines the genre for all time. It is utterly beyond human imagination that anyone else can ever or will ever do it better than the great Herb Jeffries. Get "The Bronze Buckaroo (Rides Again)"... this fabulous CD is a "keeper"!

Customer Reviews:
A fabulous vintage recording; this is among the best.......2006-12-06
From beginning to end, this is an excellent disc, perhaps the best of its kind. The 1959 recording is amazing; Mercury has done wonders with the sound. I bought this recording despite the fact that I own all but four of the overtures (Boccaccio & the Auber), and have not regretted it a bit. I had bought Mehta's recording previously, but Paray wins in most every regard. The former seems lackluster when compared to Paray, especially when it comes to The Beautiful Galatea. Pique Dame is also quite a bit more energetic in Paray's version.
As for the others, Light Cavalry is joyously executed, Poet and Peasant the same. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna is neglected far more than it should be. The same goes for Boccaccio: this is one of the two recordings of it available. This is the starting place in this repertoire.
And all this does not even touch on the Auber overtures! Auber's overtures sound almost a cross between Rossini & Suppe at times; yet they are very individual. Curiously, The Bronze Horse is an overture to an oriental opera. Auber does not treat it as such, that is for sure. Fra Diavolo begins with a bit of percussion, then leads into its first piquant melody. Masaniello is a bit more familiar; Johann Strauss's Op. 34 is entitled "Schwarttsche Ball-Tanze," Cotillons on themes from "La muette de Portici" (this is the other name for Masaniello). Give them a listen, all three are fabulous. It is surprising these concert pieces are not more well known.
Overall, this disc is a must for the lover of the overture, or any such music. Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra do the music full justice, as Mercury do to the players. Enjoy.
Paul Paray/Detroit To The Finish Line..............2005-09-29
If Paul Paray was a race horse, I'd place my bet on him each time to win...and indeed I would. This former conductor of the Detroit Symphony has the "Midas Touch", for everything he touches turns to gold. This CD of Suppe and Auber Overtures is no exception, and belongs in everyone's musical library. No matter how many other recordings of these warhorse pieces you own...these renditions are essential. Consistently, each Paray/Detroit recording is a gala event. The overtures contained on this CD are all very familiar to me, and yet it's as though I'm hearing them through a different set of ears. Conductor Paray brings out orchestral nuances like few other conductors can. Each well-known overture is played with energy, finesse, impeccable interpretation, and with extraordinary sound, which is a Mercury Living Presence trademark. Do yourself a favor, anything that Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony have recorded...BUY!!! I have not lost a race yet. Very Highly recommended.
Paul Paray Brings Rare Overtures To Life.......2005-08-15
This recording, digitally remastered from the old 50's or 60's LP, is more than anything a joyous discovery of rare overtures conducted by an excellent and much admired conductor, the Canadian-born Paul Paray. Paray shaped the Detroit Symphony and since his death in 1979, a conductor of his magnificence has yet to be found for that particular orchestra. Though Paray's home was Montreal, Canada, and he conducted the Montreal forces in his younger days, he became a big name in American conducting. He found a home with the Detroit Symphony and even recorded several fine works of classical music on LP. Many of these- Scheherazade, French Orchestral Music, Carmen Suites and others are on CD and available on Amazon.com.
In this recording, Paray treats us to finely executed overtures by the operetta composer Franz Von Suppe. Suppe was not a big star in his day. His operettas were early Viennese operettas before the more famous Johann Strauss ever staged Die Fledermaus and the dozens of other operettas that followed. Suppe was an Austrian man but very French in his attitude (hence the last name Suppe)and even had French opera-bouffes in his musical styling. Like Offenbach, his operettas were charming, engaging works of fantasy. Consider "The Beautiful Galatea" which is the first track. The Overture is ebullient and energetic, describing the magical forces behind the story which is basically the ancient Greek myth that inspired Pygmalion- an aged inventor who builds the perfect woman. Consider also his "Boccaccio" based on the late Renaissance collection of mildly erotic poetry which read more like the Italian version of the English Canterbury Tales. Boccaccio is amusing, with music expressing adventure and romantic entanglements. The Light Cavalry Overture is actually quite familiar to the trained ear. Its militaristic theme has been used haphazardly in cartoons when a cavalry on horse would appear. His Pique Dame (Queen of Spades) is not the same subject matter as Tchaikovsky's later opera which is far darker opera. Suppe's is charming comedy about a gambling salon. The Poet and the Peasant Overture is festive and brilliantly played, in fact, the best I've heard. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna foreshadows Strauss waltzes. The album concludes with overtures from an even lesser known composer Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber. Auber was a French composer who wrote early opera-buffes, though most assuredly he was eclipsed by Offenbach and Halevy. His Fra Diavolo and Masaniello Overtures are effectively engaging with their colorful phrasing.
Paul Paray brings life to these overtures, making them appear as if they are not old or obscure at all. He has genuine chemistry with all the musicians in the orchestra and the music is bright, energetic and even a pleasure to hear because it would appear it was a pleasure for Paray and the Detroit forces to make this recording.
Pure, Unrestrained JOY..........2003-02-27
I bought this CD beause I'm working on collecting the Mercury Catalog, and when I bought it, I paid no attention to what the actual pieces were because I had no idea who Suppe was or what his overtures were.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I was surprised upon first listening... Not only is this music the type of music that is inherent to people from its use in background music to cartoons, TV, movies, etc... but it is so very enjoyable because it exhudes an amazing, unadulterated amount of PURE JOY and EXCITEMENT... with no attempt at being high-brow, or overly serious music.
The good news is that even though this music might be considered to be more "common" among classical elitists, Paul Paray treated it as he would any great art. This recording gives you such beautifully refined sound, such truly INCREDIBLE energy and exhuberence, all with stunning precision and control- that you will be sold upon first hearing.
As other reviews mention- there is no need to look at other recordings of these works, because you will mosy likely get a cheap "pops" orchestra recording that treats the music cheaply beacause of its unabashed "happiness" and accesibility. The result is fun, but trite and gets old fast. With this Paray, the energy seems to remain fresh every time you play it. You can't go wrong with this orchestral uplifter to cleanse your palate between your serious Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Mahler symphonies.
So, elitsts... forget your pride and buy these CDs. Fun is not a crime. And, beginners, this is a GREAT way to find how truly fun and emotive classical music can be. Enjoy it.
Nice CD.......2002-08-13
In high school, I played Suppe's "Light Cavalry". So I wanted to get a copy for years but just hadn't bothered. This music recorded on this CD is good quallity (sometimes classical music CD's aren't as good a quality) and the music is very enjoyable. Lovers of classical music or Suppe will enjoy this CD. It is a worthy addition to any music collection.

Customer Reviews:
thanks again, naxos!.......2007-04-04
naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

Album Description
HAMMERED is the Wicked Tinkers second CD and gets its name from the second tune on the album, "Hammer on the Anvil" (or that persistent pounding you hear listening to their drums and pipes). There are a few tunes and songs that could be considered slow and beautiful, although the Tinkers don't advocate such things. If you liked the first CD, we think you will love this one. The Wicked Tinkers say "Most tunes on this CD are from the Highlands of Scotland, where the music we love was born. A few of the tunes are Irish (Warren's heritage), who we feel are brothers to the Scots. Some tunes are Canadian (where our own John MacAdams hails from), a very Scottish place. A wee bit from Australia rounds out the lot." "We are thankful to all our fans for their support of this unusual music. It is they who help us continue."
Customer Reviews:
Good performance....but fatally flawed by smut.............2004-07-09
Why on earth the Tinkers, who are otherwise terrific performers, chose to include an infantile vocal track (the kind considered risque at the elementary school level) defies the imagination....and then to repeat it in garbled form as the final track! Their first CD was a true revelation.....this one's a bummer.
Ceud Mile Failte! - Wicked Tinkers ROCK!!!.......2003-07-31
If you've never been to a highland games, or never experienced Celtic music and boundless energy, listen to the Wicker Tinkers FIRST! The music is incredible, the energy and showmanship is UNBELIVEABLE. If you get a chance to see these guys play live, stop everything and GO. We bought all three CD's and am hoping for more.
My punk rocker son's comment - "Wow, I had no idea about this music. These guys are awesome."
On a scale of 1-10, a 20 at least.
Feel the spirit of the highlands!.......2002-03-21
The Wicked Tinkers represent the real spirit of the Highlands. It's not the music you hear from the pipe bands on the field. It's what you'd hear at the Caleigh afterwards. It's wild and it is [sensual]! You feel the drums in your body and hear the pipes in your soul. The addition of Wayne Belger on the didgeridoo adds a primal element that sets them apart and makes the music truly unique. Keep your eye on these boys, they're going to go all the way!
Drums and pipes to move you.......2001-06-21
Literally! This is my all-time favourite CD to pop in and drive to! 'Radar Love' is a rollicking, drum filled sensation. And let's not forget the all time requested 'Amazing Grace/Scotland the Brave' combo! If you love pipes and drums, then Wicked Tinkers will fill your need. And if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO! Even better with new members.
bang the drum.......2001-06-21
Great CD with fantastic pipes by Aaron. And if you ever have a chance to see them in concert, do not hesitate. It'll make your weekend.

Amazing!! Tour de force of Gliere........2006-02-11
Gliere's "Bronze Horseman" is The Hidden Masterpiece!
I hope this music Play often all around the world.
Especially, I'd like Russian Orchestra(such a Saint Petersburg State Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra) play Gliere's works commencing with this music.
A Nice Gliere CD........2004-09-24
Recently, I purchased this CD to hear a recording of the Gliere Horn Concerto, a piece I am currently working on. I have really enjoyed the CD thus far, and I will continue to do so.
The first piece on the CD, "The Bronze Horseman," is a very nice, beautiful, neo-Romantic work steeped in the Russian music traditionalists, Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Borodin. The opening is very ominous and full of mystery. Sir Edward Downes and the orchestra give it their all.
Throughout "The Bronze Horseman," Gliere uses lush, colorful orchestration to communicate the story of the young man whose wife drowned in a river and who taunts the bronze statue of Peter the Great, which comes to life and kills him. The dance-like movements are light and rhythmically precise, giving a sprightly feel. One can hear the Balakirev tambourines and Borodin-like lilt! There are many memorable melodies and exotic harmonies, as we would expect from an admirer of the "Mighty Handful."
The Horn Concerto, played by Richard Watkins, is very fine, indeed. He has a light beautiful tone and the light technical facility we associate with the British school of horn playing, a la Dennis Brain. One might desire much more dynamic contrast, emotional expression, and full-blooded Russian sound, however, which Watkins does not provide. Also, his runs can be very sloppy (not all notes in the run appear clearly and beautifully). There are several noticeable fudged notes, also. Overall, Watkins gives a fine performance of a Romantic Russian horn warhorse.
I recommend this CD, though it is very expensive. You can certainly do better with the Horn Concerto (I have not listened to the Marie Luise Neunecker or Hermann Baumann recordings, but they are widely recognized as the best), but "The Bronze Horseman" is neat music which may not otherwise be available.
Gliere at his finest..........2000-10-16
Rheinhold Gliere was not your typical late 19th early 20th century composer, he was a neo-romanticist, and he shows that perfectly in the Bronze Horseman Suite and the Horn Concerto. The Philharmonia Orchestra in this recording of a piece not found on many recordings, gives an exciting reading throughout. The brass section particularly sounds robust and to the front of the ensemble. Being a horn player, I can never turn down another recording of the Gliere Concerto, and this one definitely does not dissappoint. Richard Watkins is at his best here, Singing the beautiful phrases and using his technical mastery to astound and amaze. Many horn players shy from this piece for reasons of endurance, so hearing a recorded version is quite better than a live performance as far as fewer missed notes. If you do not own a recording of this concerto, buy this one, and then get the Hermann Baumann recording and compare two great artists!
