Black Monk Time - The Monks.......2007-05-12
Brain meltin', free rockin', sky crushin' garage punk boogie from Mars........2007-05-10
Released in 1966, before the Summer of Love made peace the answer to all of our problems, before the bodies started piling up in Vietnam, and before Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground made it okay to hate yourself and everyone around you, The Monks' first (and, with the exception of an outtakes compilation, only) studio album is a twisted little masterpiece, an insane musical extravaganza that simply can't be duplicated. Over the course of these songs, the Monks pound, stammer, and bash their way through some of the most wonderfully deranged rock `n' roll music ever put to tape.
Built around one of the coolest rhythm sections ever (Roger Johnston's pounding, primal drumming is bolstered by the stomping bass lines of Eddie Shaw and- best of all- Dave Day, one of the few notable banjo players in the history of rock), the Monks' sound is characterized by bizarre-yet-purposeful lyrics, instrumental breaks that jump from hypnotic drones to hyperactive freak-outs and back again, and a caveman approach to playing music. But if the Monks are cavemen, then they're highly evolved cavemen- it takes a certain kind of genius to take songs like "I Hate You" and "Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy" and make them listenable. Fact `o the matter is, not only are these songs listenable, they're ruthlessly catchy, fiercely original, and more fun than skydiving.
Take "I Hate You," for example. Based on a simple, two chord bass-organ-guitar-banjo line, the track could easily have become a meandering cliché. Instead, thanks to its taut, paranoid rhythm, comically enraged lyrics, and the weird, jaunty sense of groove that permeates the whole thing, it's a great cut. And then there are the solos. The song features two logic-defying solos that show off the group at its mind-numbing best. First, Larry Clark's attacks his organ, spiraling off in just about every direction at once, mauling the keys and shooting off sparks in random directions. All of which sets the stage for Gary Burger, who mutilates his guitar and kicks up a thunderstorm of feedback, the likes of which had probably never been heard in the mid-sixties. "Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy," meanwhile, is a barnstorming adrenaline rush, driven by a galloping, ferocious percussion attack and spitting forth an invigorating mess of barely controlled instrumental apocalypse. Burger sounds really good here, pounding out a nearly metallic mess of white-noise guitar feedback. The song also demonstrates Gary's oddly powerful vocal abilities- as you've probably guessed by now, he's something of a madman, a surprisingly engaging cross between snotty disaffection, intentional self-parody, and smug inscrutability. He shreds his throat on the song's apparently meaningless, childish lyrics, sounding like he's either possessed by a playful demon, more furious than anybody has ever been before, having the time of his life, or all three. The tribal stomp of "Complication," with its impishly enraged coda of "people die for you," its snarling guitar riff, and its halting rhythms sums up the group's sound fantastically, and makes for a heck of a listen. Then again, so does the rest of the album: "Shut Up" boasts one the wildest, meanest, and coolest refrains ever, while "Oh, How To Do Now" and "Drunken Maria" are some of the catchiest songs to come out of the sixties (which is no small accomplishment). "Monk Time" is a wild, wonderfully warped statement of purpose, decked out with sinewy, seemingly stream-of-consciousness lyrics and a locked-in rhythm section. "That's My Girl" (which was the last song on the original issue of the album, before this reissue tacked a few bonus tracks from the same period on to the end) is a jaunty, hilarious monologue that closes off the proceedings quite nicely.
So, here's the bottom line: Black Monk Time is a ridiculously good, unashamedly weird little treat from beneath the surface of the mid sixties. If you like your rock n roll a little off of the beaten path, purchase this disc and crank it up. Happy listening!
Black Monk Time is a Blast.......2007-03-31
Much Ado About Nothing.......2006-12-05
Regardless of the reason(s) for their dissolution, The Monks were little known in Europe and less known in the United States. However, through successful garage/punk renaissance periods between 1975 and the present, the cachet of this outfit grew. Comments were made that The Monks were the creators and emancipators of garage rock; that they were the trend setters for the later punk revolution with their short, blunt, politicized lyrics and near-free form approach to composition. And so, with great anticipation, I obtained a copy of this album in CD format with the obligatory inclusion of extra tracks in the form of their singles.
After listening to it straight through a number of times, I am here to say that it was disappointing in the extreme. The original 12 songs are a swirling mess of styles, ranging from hard-core-like shouted lyrics through Lettermen harmonies to - and I swear this is true - yodeling. There is but minimal consistent form or competency here. It comes across as either a very primitive set of demos or a vanity piece. In terms of the latter presumption, I was forcefully reminded of The Shaggs' daddy-finanaced recording sessions.
Now, there may be those who want to rise up and proclaim that The Monks must be viewed as the prototypes for all that was good and great in the garage and punk genres. They night well content that one must see this as a visionary exhortation for unbridled mayhem in music that for its time is the equivalent of Luther nailing the 95 Theses to the church door.
Nonsense! This is not ground-breaking in the least in terms genre-setting. One only has to listen to The Ramones or Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols! to reach that sublime level of creation. Those two works do fulfil the promise of leading the masses into the unexplored country. Listen to the consistency and comptency of these works. Consider the brilliant independence clarity of purpose and of overall ability.
Then, return to Black Monk Time and try to find something...anything...remotely of the same impact.
It is not there.
Nor is the premise that this was a ground breaking work in its time a valid statement. By 1966, when this album was first issued, the garage scene was well-established, with a number of regional, national and international leading lights. So established was the genre that it was, in point of fact, already transmogrifying into a number of spin-off styles including psychedelia and galm-rock. Such syntheses require that both extant theses and antitheses. In light of that, the claim that this album is some sort of garage/punk Rosetta Stone and that the band members be accorded hagiographic status is absurb, to say the least.
Black Monk Time is nothing but an amateurish mess.

On this 1994 recording, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon arrange the music of Thelonious Monk in a warm and witty neoclassic setting that typifies Marsalis's tradition-in-transition approach to jazz. Joining Marsalis and Gordon are drummer Herlin Riley, bassists Reginald Veal and Ben Wolfe, tenor saxophonists Walter Blanding and Victor Goines, Wess Anderson on alto and soprano sax, and pianist Eric Reed.Monk's unconventionally structured blues and riff-based compositions are an important part of the jazz canon and Marsalis and company rise to the task of interpreting them. The 4/4 opener, "Thelonious," features a parade-style, stop-time intro with Anderson's ornithological, Charlie Parker-inspired tones, and Marsalis's burnished brass. The tap-dance feel of "Evidence" is maintained courtesy of the rhythm section, while the whimsical "We See" swings with Anderson's soprano sax and Reed's piano dancing on the melody. "Brake's Sake," "Green Chimneys," and "Worry Later" are solidly set in Riley's Congo Square-Latin-tinged drum work, Marsalis's laughing wah-wah sounds and clarion open horn solos, and Goines's towering tenor. A boppish horn line sets off "Four in One" and "Brilliant Corners" and is brilliantly decoded, while Marsalis's tune "In Walked Monk" (a play on Monk's "In Walked Bud") is reminiscent of Tadd Dameron's ensemble sound. The ballads include the dirgelike "Monk's Mood," with Marsalis's hazy mute, and the twilight-toned "Reflections." On "Ugly Beauty" Marsalis duets with Reed, who throughout this recording synthesizes Monk's dark tonal clusters and stride-piano techniques into his own fleet-fingered keyboard conception. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Good effort with a couple of gems.......2000-04-14
For a tribute CD to succeed completely, it has to find real wellsprings of inspiration that put a completely personal stamp on the original music, and "Marsalis on Monk" doesn't quite make that level. In fact, for a good comparison with this CD, check out altoist/flutist James Spaulding's "Brilliant Corners," which in my opinion is just a notch better than this in revisiting and reformulating Monk's work.
The music here is never stale, but many of the cuts strike me as simply very well-played covers of well-known Monk tunes. There are two notable exceptions, however. "Four in One," one of Monk's most challenging pieces is super-charged with energy, and Wynton tears off a brilliant solo near the end. I immediately hit the repeat button after I heard it for the first time. "Green Chimneys" is a terrific set closer, full of authoritative solos and rich group playing that puts to rest the notion that Monk's music can't swing.
I'd also give high marks to Wynton for the choice of material, which includes some infrequently heard minor gems, such as "Let's Cool One," "Reflections," and "Ugly Beauty."
This isn't Marsalis's best album and it isn't the best collection of Monk interpretations, but it easily delivers enough of the goods to make it a solid thumbs up.

Unique, even for Monk.......2005-10-06
The three originals Monk tackled for this are among the least well known of his songbook-- two of these pieces ("Brake's Sake" and "Shuffle Boil") had been previously recorded on a session led by alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce which Monk served as a sideman for, but the third ("Stuffy Turkey") was never recorded before. Curiously enough, this was the only time these three were recorded. All three are somewhat odd, even for Monk pieces, and all three receive inspired readings. "Stuffy Turkey" features a straight descending theme stated by Rouse and echoed by Monk, before Rouse moves into a really well constructed solo based by-and-large on theme variation. "Brake's Sake" features a rhythmically straggering and difficult theme before turning to solos by all four members of the quartet-- Monk in particular is brilliant, but Riley steals the show with an unpredictable drum solo that recalls the phrasing technique of the leader. "Shuffle Boil" is perhaps the most unique of all the pieces-- the theme statement chirps in the extreme upper register of the tenor sax, then repeats in a more comfortable middle register. This extreme of playing (accomplished it is believed through false fingerings taught to Rouse by Monk) is certainly intriguing, and after this remarkable display, Rouse takes a fantastic if somewhat conventional solo. This is followed by equally inspired solos by Monk and Riley.
Of the standards, "Lulu's Back in Town" features the most intriguing arrangement-- opening with a stride piano intro by Monk, it eventually moves into a fairly straight arrangement (and features a superb and intelligent solo by Rouse) before dropping into another solo piano section by Monk where the leader is as advanced, fractured, and intriguing. "Memories of You" is performed as a solo piano feature, and finds Monk in an odd mood, more reflective of his style than actually embracing it-- stride and Ellington influences come through, and Monk's own sound feels like just another influence on the performance. Likewise his solo piano take on "Nice Work if You Can Get It" (a piece Monk revisited time and again in his career) finds Monk sounding little like himself, again embracing a stride and to a greater extent ragtime sound with the Monkisms just one more bit in the perculator.
This reissue is augmented by three bonus tracks-- a take of one of Monk's oldest pieces and his traditional set closer "Epistrophy" and alternate takes of "Nice Work if You Can Get It" and "Shuffle Boil". While "Epistrophy" was commonly performed live, it received only one previous studio reading for Blue Note in 1948, so its inclusion is a nice surprise. Monk states the theme first on piano with his stride influences coming forth before being joined by the rest of the band. Rouse and Monk exhibit near psychic interaction as Rouse takes apart and puts back together the piece, using the full range of his horn before turning over to a brief (but stunning) solo by the leader. The alternate takes are intereting, "Nice Work If You Can Get It" has a bit more of a lilt to it then the used master, and "Shuffle Boil" receives a far briefer presentation. Both are interesting but ultimately I prefer the issued master in both cases. The material has all been remastered and like the rest of the COlumbia remasters, it sounds superb (avoid the older issues with the purplish/blue borders, they didn't sound nearly as good) and reprints the original liner notes essay as well as including a pair of essays by pianist Dick Katz reflecting on the recording session and the music.
It seems the unusual material served as inspirational for Monk and his band, and certainly the uniqueness of this record does not hurt the frequency of which I listen to it. It's not quite the best Monk's done, but it may be the most unique in his catalog. Highly recommended.
A beautifully balanced session.......2005-04-28
On the initial listening, it can be a bit disconcerting to hear Monk soloing on the first track through the right channel only. When the other players come in on both channels, however, it becomes obvious that the instruments have been appropriately separated for a very "live" effect. The program material is also very balanced, providing three originals and three standards. The format ranges from Monk's solo interpretations of two ballads to the full quartet treatment on the medium up-tempo tunes, and the best-of-both-worlds long piano intro and finish on "Lulu's Back in Town." This is a truly outstanding interpretation of a tune Monk performed frequently. Everyone plays with focused, elegant confidence throughout.
This CD could serve as a starting point for exploring Monk's music. If you're already a fan, it might be a very worthwhile addition to your collection. [This review refers to the IMPORT release]

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15

Album Description
Tribute to the Monks. This is an amazing collection of bands paying tribute to the legendary Monks (Their first album, Black Monk Time, is as relevant now as it was 40 years ago!). The line-up is very enticing, and features several ''unknown'' bands like Mense Reents, Cycle, 27/11, Gudrun Gut, Fehlfarben as well as unlikely ones like Mouse On Mars. Other more known acts include Silver Apples/Alan Vega, The Raincoats, The 5.6.7.8's, The Fall, Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten), Alec Empire ft. Gary Burger, Psychic TV and more. 29 tracks in all!! Enjoy! Play Loud Productions. 2006.Customer Reviews:
A New Kind Of Hop Time, A New Kind Of Monk Time! .......2007-03-04
I feel fans will be divided on this CD, some peferring the ambient-techno songs mostly found on CD-1 as opposed to the more straight ahead rock renditions of Monk tunes found on CD-2. I personally play CD-2 more. The best song on this whole set is International Noise Conspiracys' take on "Shut Up." The intense interplay between the bass and drums in worth the price of admission alone! There are two Monk-sample songs, "Monk Hop" and "Blaster" (featuring samples of "Blast Off" none the less). Small excerpts of Dave Days' interview in the documentary are sprinkeled here and there in songs. Barbra Mason does a great version of "I Can't Get Over You" slowing the tempo down a bit from the ska-influenced original. The 5.6.7.8s version of "Cuckoo" is insane, an Asian girl group singing in broken English complete with a pedal steel guitar and barrel-house piano, no joke! Gary Burger proves to be a great vocalist with Faust on closing cut "Beware The Transatlantic Feedback," a heavy industrial number on which Burgers' vocal rants sound perfect. And the whole thing kicks off (after one opening intrumental), with a new updated version of "Monk Time" on which Gary Burger declairs "WHY DO YOU KILL ALL THOSE KIDS OVER THERE IN IRAQ?! GEORGE BUSH, WHO'S HE?!" Yes The Monks are here and "with it" in this decade, and they still rock. I recommend this CD set to ALL Monk fans and anyone interested in ambient, techno, or krautrock. Hopefully those who've never heard of The Monks will hear them now.
