Noted English screenwriter Richard Curtis makes his directorial bow with this romantic comedy that follows the dizzying foibles of no less than a dozen couples, featuring a cast that includes Hugh Grant as a bachelor British PM and Billy Bob Thornton as a disturbing hybrid of the worst of Clinton and Bush. Seemingly taking its lead from Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel (both of which Curtis also wrote), Love's rich, eclectic collection of pop songs becomes something more than mere movie-soundtrack wallpaper. Indeed, tracks as disparate as Joni Mitchell's hauntingly autumnal remake of "Both Sides Now" and the Pointer Sisters' effusive '80s hit "Jump" function somewhere between supporting player and narrative Greek chorus. It's a mature, often introspective collection that mixes the expected chestnuts (the Beach Boys' evergreen "God Only Knows") and covers (Eva Cassidy's stately version of Christine McVie's "Songbird," an R&B-infused take of "All You Need Is Love" by Lynden David Hall) with standout work from Norah Jones (a torched-up "Turn Me On"), Texas (the Dusty Springfield-esque dramatics of "I'll See It Through"), and Wyclef Jean's joyous "Take Me As I Am." Underscoring the film's Christmas subtext are three holiday-themed bonus cuts by Otis Redding, Billy Mack (the film's resident rock star burnout, played by Bill Nighy), and Olivia Olson. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

(Black Lily) and was blown away by the two of them. Their music is welcoming, it's peaceful and soulful. I asked her to perform "Stars" for me and my husband. It was unbelievable. Every Tuesday their band would head to the stage and the rest is as they say history.

My husband and I go see them in concert, everytime they come to Detroit. They are a dynamic duo. I hope they don't fall prey to the industry, as their look is evolving into what records exec would have you look like, rather than the natural look, I'm come to expect. Nevertheless.......I am a fan and will continue to be. I highly recommend this CD and the new one. Look out for those hidden tracks.....gems to say the least.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show. The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.
From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13
While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.
As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!
I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.
Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12
I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.
Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.
Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.
it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

A Real Treat! Especially the DVD!.......2007-06-27
The dvd has some promo videos and candid interviews with members of the band and especially of Brian Wilson but the sound quality of the DVD Dolby Surround is truly fantastic. You just end up hearing sounds that you didn't know were there when you were just listening to the cd. It's made me decide to forego the cds and to go straight for the DVD whenever I want to listen to the album. For this reason alone I'd say go get this version unless they end up just releasing the DVD in an mlps format the way they have just done with U2's "Rattle and Hum". If they do that in the future, I'd say go and get that if you already have the cd. Oh yeah, and they really should include "Trombone Dixie" in addition the "Hang On to Your Ego" that they included with the cd but not with the dvd as well as the other outtake sounds that were part of the bonus tracks that were released in the 1991 stereo version.
Confessions from a curious listener.......2007-01-20
The 40th Anniversary edition comes with a wonderful DVD that documents the making of this album through interviews and original footage, plus a video showing a visit Sir George Martin made to Brian Wilson's home.
This album is a MUST-HAVE for music fans, and I totally agree with Sir Paul McCartney's views on this album (printed on the CD's booklet), expressing that "NOBODY IS TRULY MUSICALLY EDUCATED WITHOUT LISTENING TO PET SOUNDS"
You can never have too much Pet Sounds.......2007-01-04
I already own the box set, the 1st CD edition and even an original vinyl copy. It seems that every time I upgrade I am never disappointed.
Purist seem to like the Mono version of the album. I love the all the sounds that scream out of the stereo version.
If you do not have the box set or the other stereo Cd, I would highly recommend this set. It covers everything Pet Sounds that you will want. If you do not care for the interviews and film, you will appreciate the surround mix on the DVD. The box set is more for Brian wilson Fanatics(Myself included) and collectors.
Finally, a HIGH CLASS package for a high class album.......2006-11-11
So, this work of art was literally outstanding in its field, and those of us who actually listened to it were challenged with our feelings, thoughts, and actions toward this thing that we called LOVE. It was an absolute shame that Capitol Records was spoiled by their cash cow producers (The Beatles and The Beach Boys) and only wanted more of the same stuff that paid their salaries, and yet couldn't see the "art" part even as it was smacking them in their corporate faces! This album, Pet Sounds, spawned a deeper penetration into mainstream pop music of artistically developed poetry and music. Now we were getting exposed to productions that challenged our senses: abstract forms like "MacArthur's Park", self-divulgences like "17" by Laura Nyro, and of course John Lennon's 2 great anthems "All You Need Is Love" & "Give Peace A Chance".
....all thanks to this work of angst...I mean, ART, by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds". And this package is a fine tribute to its existence...with a Bonus DVD too!
What's better than Pet Sounds?.......2006-11-10

Touted by a highly suspicious media blitz ("Brian is Back!"), 1976's 15 Big Ones caught the nostalgic wave generated by the surprise success of Endless Summer and Spirit of America, the double-album compilations of the Beach Boys' mid-'60s, summer-music prime, and rode it close to the crest of the charts. One doesn't have to get much further than the tepid (albeit top 10) cover of Chuck Berry's's "Rock and Roll Music" to realize that band founder/original creative spark Brian Wilson may indeed have been back, but sounded like he was working under duress--if he was working at all. With a covers-heavy tack best described as a parody of the band's original trademark sound, wed to some of the mid-'70s worst production trends, it's an album that shows just how much the public still yearned for the band's classic sound, even if their faith ended up being "rewarded" by the likes of Mike Love's embarrassing "Everyone's in Love with You" and "T.M. Song." Conversely, Brian was definitely back for '77s Love You, an album that's become something of a critic's darling, if only because it hews so bravely to the strange musical vision that seeped from Wilson's then-troubled mind. Brian's synth-heavy production managed to be at once dense and minimalist, while the songs remain some of the most consistently loopy concoctions the band ever recorded. While his vulnerable romanticism is also on display, it's Wilson's playful sense of humor that dominates, from strange odes to "Johnny Carson" and the "Solar System" to innocent romps like "Ding Dang" and "Mona." A quarter-century later, it's an album that can still both surprise and delight. Both albums are digitally remastered on a single disc. --Jerry McCulleyAmazon.com

superb reissue of two albums that really go well together.......2005-05-02
That said, "The Beach Boys Love You", released in April of 1977, is even MORE of a blast. Brian's pretty much in total control here (or totally out of his mind, depending on how you look at it). In addition to producing again (with Carl credited as the `mixdown producer`), Brian receives sole writing credit on 11 of the 14 tracks (although it's long been rumored that Brian's notorious shrink/ guru Eugene Landy helped with a lot of the lyrics), & Brian also played the lion's share of the instruments, including the technically rudimentary drumming. Indeed, the album was thought to be released as a Brian Wilson solo album entitled "Brian Loves You". Also, it's almost beyond all belief how much Brian's voice had changed over the course of the decade--as if you needed a reminder, the album contains the Al Jardine-Brian Wilson composition "Good Time" with a lead vocal from Brian recorded in the early `70s which explains why it lacks the hoarse, lower-register tone of his vocals on the rest of the album (goes to show what drugs can do). The resulting album is, on one hand, extremely primitive, but at the same time, Brian's incredible songwriting ability and his ear for harmony remain on full display. On `Side 1' of the album, Brian is basically living in a fantasy world, offering up rousing, irresistibly fun songs like the stomping album-opener "Let Us Go On This Way" (written by Brian & Mike); the lustful "Roller Skating Child"; the 4-chord, Phil Spector-style "Mona"; a tribute to "Johnny Carson"; the ultra-catchy, highly amusing "Honkin' Down The Highway" (the version here restores the drum intro that was missing on the old Caribou CD release of "Love You"); and the brief "Ding Dang" (written by Brian & Roger McGuinn) with its delirious party atmosphere. `Side 2' then, in somewhat similar fashion to 1965's "The Beach Boys Today!", is the `ballad side', offering up such gems as the waltzing, wondrous, & gloriously silly "Solar System"; the tender "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" (with lead vocals from Brian & Marilyn); the brilliantly tuneful ode to babies "I Wanna Pick You Up" (with lead vocals from Dennis & Brian); and the casually anxious "Airplane" which ends with an "I-can't-take-it-anymore" boogie-woogie coda. "I'll Bet He's Nice" is a strong piece of material, although I prefer the demo version that appears on the "Brian Loves You" bootleg opposed to the overproduced version here. The album closer "Love Is A Woman" is kind of half-baked, but it does have a vibe startingly similar to Leonard Cohen's "Death of a Ladies' Man" album, which, tellingly, was produced by Phil Spector and came out the same year.
Overall, there's an absolute wealth of unique and terrific music to be found on this two-fer. No, this isn't "Pet Sounds", but if you're truly interested in the eclectic genius of Brian Wilson, i.e., a serious music listener, this disc ranks at must-have status.
Near rock bottom...and a big comeback.......2005-03-23
The 2nd album on this twofer disc is the far more satisfying, though quirky, "The Beach Boys Love You". A look at the crazed expression in Brian's eyes in the insert photo (with his wife Marilyn in the tiara) reveal the mad genius at work here. The songs run to "out there" subject matter like late night talk host Johnny Carson and celestial bodies ("Solar System").
HIGHLIGHTS:
Let's make it "3 Big Ones": Though short, the 'missing you on the road' tune "Had to Phone Ya" has a gently swinging melody (the clarinet is key) that charms. I'll risk the wrath of the "Mike Love is Satan" club by pointing out that "Everyone's in Love with You" is a very good ode to Transcendental Meditation, combining a decent melody, an OK if not great lyric, and probably the best group vocals on the disc. "That Same Song" sounds like a lost showtune from a musical about the evolution of song. It's no classic, but it's hummable and worth a hear.
If you can get over some of the odd subject matter, "Love You" has some winsome ditties here buried in deceptively simple arrangements. "Let us Go on this Way" finds Brian flashing back to high school days and signaling that he cares about his music again. (The emphatic "Yeah!" says volumes) "Johnny Carson"'s 'Who's the man that we admire?' coda will run through your brain for awhile after hearing it. "The Night was So Young" has sparks of vintage Brian (listen to "Is somebody gonna tell me..why she has to hi-i-i-ide??"). "I'll Bet He's Nice" is another one that sticks with you, with a nice handclap fade. "I Wanna Pick You Up" is Brian's tender ode to his daughters. (The "little baby go to sleep" harmony at the end is spine-tingling)
VALLEYS:
"Big Ones" is the worst BB album to feature Brian Wilson: Mike Love cancels out his meditation highlight with the completely wretched "TM Song". It's plagued by a ridiculous "mock fight" intro (followed by the spoken "It's time to meditate..."), an asinine lyric, and awkward tempo changes. It's abysmal in every way. "Palisades Park" is rendered here in a slowed-down midtempo with country-tinged guitar and completely minus the drum wallop of the Freddy Cannon original. "Susie Cincinnati" is a lame attempt at an updated "409" with a protagonist who's homely but good with a gearshift. "Blueberry Hill" starts great, with an understated Mike vocal and a bongo lope reminiscent of Elvis Presley's version of "Blue Moon" but completely falls apart once the whole group comes in. The singing on "Chapel of Love" is ragged, as is the harmonizing on "Just Once in my Life" (Brian's fault..Carl sounds OK), desecrating two Phil Spector classics. Dennis sounds raw on "In the Still of the Nite".
There are only a few egregious moments on "Love You" thankfully:
"Ding Dang" is really just a fragment, not a song...maybe it would have worked better with a tiny musical link to make it an intro to "Roller Skating Child"? "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" is a passable lyric, but Brian's wife is no singer and Brian himself sounds a little weak here. "Love is a Woman" 'tell her she smells good tonight' is part of the lyric. 'Nuff said.
BOTTOM LINE:
"Love You" is one you should have if you appreciate their 70s output so buy this and program out most of the "Big Ones" tracks. If you only really like the "sun and fun" stuff, you probably won't care for this one...you'd be better off skipping this and getting the "Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys" twofer which has some of their last chart hits and probably the most 'classic' sounding latter day Beach Boys tune "Getcha Back".

Album Description
One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.Customer Reviews:
