Customer Reviews:
Hot and Nasty.......2007-07-11
This was my first concert back in 1973. I got this for my husband for Christmas so he could remember that concert. Great music from the 70's.
KICKASS CLLECTION of BOA.......2007-02-11
This is probably the very best "best of" to be released by anyone ,really.I would of liked "white-headed woman"& maybe "backdoor man"
included. But Black Oak had so many great songs you can't put em all on."Gettin Kinda Cocky"is another one.I could sit here and name off 2or3 cds worth of great songs they did.
This is for the people who never saw the band or know much of their music to start off with. But be careful. This band is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!
hot & nasty cd.......2007-01-10
i had a hard time finding the first cd i had of this band. i finally found it in wyoming when i was out there on vacation.
it is a very good quality cd. i will enjoy listening to it all the time.
thanks again for helping me find it.
Great Single-Disc Best-Of On BOA.......2007-01-07
HOT & NASTY is a great single-disc best of on Black Oak Arkansas, arguably the funkiest, grittiest, most psychedelic band ever to come out of the South during the 70s. The band lacked the musical finesse of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, the Outlaws, .38 Special, or even Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet, but made up for it with a nasty sense of humor that's good to equate teasing with, so the bully doesn't get any pleasure. The only thing wrong with this anthology is that it doesn't have "Strong Enough To Be Gentle", but that's a minor quibble. If you don't want to spring for the new double-disc DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION, the fact that band members Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and Ricky Reynolds currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement and stern justice for kidnappers, makes HOT & NASTY an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
My boys My boys.......2005-03-25
What a bunch of wild styles. I grew up in the same Paragould/Jonesboro area as these young men did. They were "a little unusual" in a time and place where unusual was definately not embraced. We were pretty sure Mangrum was an alien but we could never find his spaceship. They first recorded under the name of "The Knowbody Else" These guys would smoke a joint and then go hang up side down by their knees in the trees of this old house they rented in Jonesboro. Of course right on the busiest street in town. They went down to New Orleans for a while and blended some of that hillbilly rock with some new Nawlens hot sauce. It worked. They changed some members (go Stanley) and the name and the rest is a party filled collection of the best simplified rock/party music ever made. I really love Flying Horse of Louisiana from the first Knowbody Else album, but that music pales to Black Oak's full force charge. Please experience their music in some form of altered state if at all possible.
party on guys cause you'll aways be..Hot and Nasty!!

CDs OK - Documentation Inexcusable.......2006-09-14
You can always argue about what songs should be included in an anthology of a band whose members changed over time. As a junior high school kid listening to these tunes isolated from the larger world, I may not have had the good taste to select the same songs that the larger market did, but the important ones are here and the sound quality is acceptable.
So why only one star?
Since I'm not building a shrine dedicated to Humble Pie in my listening room, I want a CD in a standard jewel case with documentation that fits also into that standard jewel case. I'd love a fact-filled booklet included with the CD that would answer questions friends will inevitably have when we reminisce while listening to Humble Pie. An informative booklet was included. However, the MORONS at A&M records made the booklet about an eighth of an inch too tall and about three quarters of an inch too wide to fit into the case! IDIOTS! Merely cropping the photos differently could easily have allowed the booklet to fit into the jewel case. It certainly wasn't too thick. Get over yourselves and make something that buyers want, not the wet dream of your cubicle musings.
Good Anthology Especially For The Black Crowes Lovers..Their Roots Are Here...........2005-12-28
The Small Faces super stardom eluded the PIE but Humble Pie always managed to fuse blues, rock, soul into some creative hybrid marking them a unique powerhouse.
With Steve Marriott and in it's earlier days, Peter Frampton, a more folk spacey sound hi-lighted Frampton's songs on their overall first few albums which dominated ..After the departure of Frampton onto his solo career, Marriott took the Pie under his wing as his total vehicle , back to their Small Faces roots and to it's love of Ray Charles,Sam Cooke,Otis Redding ..a sort of white UK blue eyes Rock, soul, revue with a very hard kicking Rock blast of bravado and and loud power chords..all this high powered soul with loud crunching guitars with the distinct high pitched voice of Marriott and for some time use female soul vocalists on chorus, created boogie and music you can move to.
This anthology does a service to the band, taking out a fine selection from all their albums..each album was different and good..from the more acoustic and folkie early Immediate label days to the louder higher octane r&b driven later recordings, smack in the middle their Live At The Fillmore album and the classic Smokin'.
Hopefully some of the later albums will find the light of day in less pricey domestic releases...Smokin' needs a definitive rerelease..
Essential career spanning retrospective........2005-01-28
In 1969, Steve Marriott (lead vocals/guitar) left the Small Faces and joined Peter Frampton (guitars, vocals) of the Herd, Greg Ridley (bass) of Spooky Tooth, and Small Faces associate Jerry Shirley (drums) to form the blues boogie rock band Humble Pie. The two CD, 31 track "Hot 'n' Nasty" Anthology covers their first 9 albums from 1969-1975 which is their best material and beyond so it goes a little farther than it needs to, but everything here is great. Another nice feature is that the music is chronological starting with "Natural Born Woman" from their 1969 debut "As Safe As Yesterday Is" and closing with songs from the 1975 "Street Rats" LP including "Rain", a Lennon/McCartney original. After 1971's "Rock On", Frampton left the group to go solo and they recruited guitarist Clem Clemson to release what ended up being their most successful chart topping LP, "Smokin" (1972). As with all compilations there are usually a few fan favorites or notable album tracks missing like "I can't stand the rain", "Roadrunner", and "Sour Grain", but that really is nit-picking in this case. Even die hard fans can't argue that "Hot N Nasty" includes their best material overall and is the strongest, most consistent collection in their catalog. There are other Humble Pie compilations in single disc format such as "The Best of" and "Classics Vol. 14" but both are small ("Best of" has 9 tracks!) and come no where near making the statement "Hot N Nasty" does. Bottom line: If you want to have one definitive collection of Humble Pie, this is it.
Here are the albums covered by "Hot N Nasty":
As Safe As Yesterday Is (1969)
Town & Country (1969)
Humble Pie (1970)
Rockin the Fillmore (1971)
Rock On (1971)
Smokin' (1972)
Eat It (1973)
Thunderbox (1974)
Street Rats (1975)

Great compliation by a great band.......2004-04-12
HUmble Pie was a great band. Why they are not mentioned with the likes of Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath I really don't know. The late Steve Marriott was one of the greatest lead vocalists ever. This compliation gives gives you the anthology from the early days with Peter Frampton to the mid seventies stuff. This band rocked. They were certainly early heavy metal and blues.

Album Description
Coined ' a blues-afflicted, roadhouse-rock group'. This is likely the most eclectic blues CD I've ever heard. It is a very delightful blend of blues, folk, classic and southern rock. The original songs offer great lyrics and instrumentation, and fine vocals. Tracks change between driving electric blues and rock, and tasty acoustic ballads. The addition of a nice violin and female vocals on a few tunes mixes it up even more, The variety of sound styling makes for enjoyable listening and offers something for everyone. If your looking for a new and different blues CD, I recommend you check this one out. - Marla Fitzsimmons, Walla Walla Blues Society
Customer Reviews:
Powerful and Fun.......2003-09-17
'Nasty Packages' is loaded with tune after tune of great lyrics, strong vocals and killer guitar-laced grooves. If you're looking for a little something out of the ordinary yet fully grounded in blues-rock, check this CD out. I loved the first CD by these guys and love this one even more (no easy feat). With that being said, their live performances even expand and add more power to these great recorded versions. Check 'Nasty Packages' and The Maynard Brothers Band out whenever you get the chance. Keep the great music coming boys!
Nothing Nasty Here.......2003-08-28
This CD and this band rocks and I like their rockin' tunes the best. The first song cracks me up and the theme song is pretty spooky. My favorite tune though is Waitin' on a Bone with a nice Stevie Ray-like groove. Great guitar and vocals throughout and I'm glad that I found it and want some more.
