Awesome indeed!.......2007-02-03

I bought this album on iTunes a couple of months ago and loved it. I stumbled on it by accident, while searching for a rendition of "Awesome God." I'm glad I found it, because this is one of the best sacred acapella recordings I've ever listened to.

Amazon does not provide this information, but the choir on this CD is conducted by Keith Lancaster. He does an amazing job. The sound is very clear and vibrant. As a singer myself, I think the choir does a great job of having a clear "forward" sound without sounding nasal. In addition, the blend between the men and women is just right. The first track is an excellent acapella rendition of the popular worship song "Awesome God," and is my personal favorite on this CD. Some of my other favorites are "Give Thanks to the Lord," "We Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God," "My Life Is In You," "That's Why We Praise Him." One other noteworthy thing about this recording: the way the track changes are edited, it doesn't sound like the choir ever stops singing; it sounds like they recorded everything in one take. I don't know if this actually happened or if it's just the result of clever editing, but it sounds great! In conclusion, this is a must-own for sacred acapella fans. 5 out of 5.

The inspirational music--sung a capella--incudes upbeat praise songs as well as moving songs of worship. Singing along with it is an uplifting experience. Mine is a 2CD set, in which the 2nd CD is recorded so that by tuning the speakers to one side or the other the different parts (alto, tenor, soprano, & bass)can be heard more clearly--this helps to learn individual parts since on the main CD the harmonizing is so smooth that it can be challenging to pick out the parts.

Although the songs are not children's songs per se, my little girl has several favorites (her most favorite is the title song) and I have used some of the songs as a springboard for discussion of topics from God's protection to obedience.

I've enjoyed singing along with this CD with both teens and adults, in the car and in a congregational group.

My favorites are "Hide Me Away, O Lord" and "Open the Eyes of my Heart".

This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.

Must Stop Ordering When Drinking - Or Maybe I Got Foxed.......2006-09-02

Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.

Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.

Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.

Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!

Another November has GREAT KARMA.......2005-11-14

This is an awesome CD, I cannot say enough about it.
The music and the lyrics blew me away. I cannot pick a favorite. All the tracks are great. This band has a TON of talent and I hope to hear them on the radio soon!

This sort of thing makes buying music worthwhile........2005-11-12

Karma Ghost is not an over-engineered, glitzy, talent-free band churning forth music written by some 'professional' composer who's never held a guitar a day in his life and performed by a group of actors whose only dedication to the music is the fact that they get paid. Instead, this is a labor of love by dedicated and talented individuals. Real laughter and tears went into the writing of these songs; mirth and pain into the performances. Every song has a story, and the band members are more than happy to share them.

This is an introductory album, but it doesn't feel like it. There is a synergy between the instruments and the vocals that shines through - and would not come through, perhaps, if the album were engineered and auto-tuned and tweaked into a plastic-wrapped shell of music. It sounds like Karma Ghost is sitting in your car with you, playing music - only, having heard them live, it's unfair to make that comparison; however fun they are to listen to from the studio, the energy and dedication they give off on stage makes it ten times more enjoyable.

Buy a copy, play it for your friends, write them a note to say hello - and find out when their next show is! If you happen to be in the right place at the right time - currently Denver, Colorado - it's a fun-filled time you don't want to miss.

New Indie band with great potential.......2005-11-09

Karma Ghost's first album, Another November, I have to say is not too bad. Most new, independent bands I've listened to before always seemed to having something not quite right. Either out of tune intruments, out of tune lyrics, or the beat and rythem aren't in sync.

This is not the case with Karma Ghost. Although the recording quality and mixing is not quite as good as most of the labeled artists (what can you expect, they're an indie band), the musical talent here is pretty darn good.

I'd say at least give them a try, and hopefully a second album won't be far behind.

Heartfelt, Genuine Article Country.......2001-07-10

In a town where the tastemakers label anything traditional country as "boring" (as producer Chuck Howard did with Brad Paisley in the Nashville press), this Canadian native stands apart from the style benders on the Nashville scene. Something in Gentes' personable, lilting alto reminds the listener of a 1970s Emmylou Harris, a pair of cowboy boots among high-heel glitter sneakers. Her heartfelt and traditional themed songwriting, combined with an emphasis on acoustic instrumentation and soaring vocal harmonies, give this CD both impact and listenability. Whether the winning "Courage to Say Goodbye," the whimsical "Go Your Own Way," or the emotional title track (about dealing with losing her parents to a drunk driver), Gentes has recorded a solid 13 country tracks that are quite listener friendly.

At Long Last ............................................2001-04-07

I have listened to this CD over and over! It is soulful, bluesy, jazzy and country in a uniquely packaged sound. Diane's voice and the quality of the writing is fantastic - and it goes without saying that the musicians are top notch - nothing less than what you can expect from this very talented woman.

As a fan of Diane's for many years, I have long awaited the release of her debut CD and it has been well worth the wait. Listening to the selections brings back many memories of the bands Diane has sung with, the thrill I felt singing with her and of course, the memory of her wonderful parents and family. I have commented many times over the years that she's one of the best kept secrets in Canada. But no longer! Another amazing Canadian taking the music world by storm! Finally the rest of the world can enjoy this talented and gifted performer/songwriter.

Congratulations Diane on a fabulous debut CD! Your Mom & Dad would be so pleased for you (I KNOW they're watching!).

A Lifetime Left to Cry.......2001-03-17

I have known Diane for more than twenty years, although we have not always been in contact. Her music has always reached deep inside my soul, but her debut CD just blew me away. Her title song, A Lifetime Left to Cry, indeed brought tears to my eyes as I had known her parents who were killed by that drunk driver. No one has ever written and sung a song as powerful as that one. She is one great artist!
