Once a bustling suburb on L.A.'s southern flank, Hawthorne and its middle-class values informed an innocent, distinctly SoCal vision of youthful hedonism and produced Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Irony being what it is, Hawthorne's centerpiece mall eventually decayed into a boarded-up economic disaster area while the Wilson family home was bulldozed to make room for--what else?--a freeway. But the Beach Boys' gloriously unlikely legacy remains, celebrated here in this double-disc anthology of harmony-rich rarities and audio vérité dialog snippets. It's also a credit to the band's manic 1960s work ethic; despite the wealth of similar rarities to be found on the twofer catalog reissue series and the Good Vibrations and Pet Sounds box sets, previously unheard gems continue to emerge. While the surviving members' uneasy relationship likely prevented some more candid session revelations from emerging, the focus here is the arc of the group's musical history.

Skewed heavily--and rightfully--toward the band's first seven years, this chronology offers up charmingly rough early demos ("Surfin'," "Surfin' USA," "Little Deuce Coupe"), edited session highlights, backing tracks ("Fun, Fun, Fun," "Salt Lake City," "Good Vibrations," "Be with Me," "Sail On Sailor"), spectacular a cappella versions ("Kiss Me Baby," "Can't Wait Too Long," "Add Some"), alternate takes ("The Little Girl I Once Knew" with an a cappella break, "Time to Get Alone," "Break Away"), and some modern stereo remixes and edits that add revealing details ("Dance, Dance, Dance," "Heroes and Villains," "Vegetables," "Time to Get Alone"). The crucial latter contributions of Carl and Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine are also showcased on "Let the Wind Blow," "A Time to Live in Dreams," and "Cotton Fields," respectively. The dialog adds some minor perspective but, as always, it's music that carries the day. Hawthorne, CA is a must for collectors and a concise, insightful introduction to a true American musical institution. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Essential for the true fans.......2005-10-05

Im sick of all these so called 'fans' that cannot find any value in this collection or dont understand the value in listening to instrumental-only beach boys tracks. This collection is not for the casual fan, for the fan that only has a greatest hits album. This is for us who own ALL the albums, know every part by heart, and have marvelled to the musical genious of Brian Wilson as well as the vocal abilities of the beach boys. This collection is great, although it does get weak in the last cuts of the 2nd CD, when Brian was totally out of the picture. Get this after you have listened to all the original albums from the 60's.

2 out of 5 stars Starting to get a little thin.......2005-03-29

I'm a pretty diehard Beach Boys fan, but much of this goes beyond my interest level. The "Stack o Tracks" style rarities don't hold as much interest for me as they do (as a novelty) on the boxset. Ditto the newly crafted stereo remixes of mono tracks. I'm interested in Brian's creative process..but I don't need to get sessions of every song he did (in other words, I don't consider "Salt Lake City" to be the same caliber song as the stuff on "SMiLe" or "Pet Sounds"). I do like the little spoken "interview" snippets between tracks..they make nice leadins to the rarities here, but I see them as "extra" and not a primary reason why I would buy this.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Brian's early home multitrack experimentation ("Happy Birthday Four Freshmen") and the alternate version of "Little Girl that I Once Knew" (featuring a section where the instruments abruptly drop out for an acappella chorus). The version of "Devoted to You" before the "party noise" overdubs were added is truly touching. The alternate "Time to Get Alone" has a nice acappella coda.

LOWS:
As mentioned before, there's only so many times you're happy to hear an instrumental backing track or session work unless there's something DRASTICALLY different from the official version (example...the COMPLETELY different acappella coda for "God Only Knows" that was on Disc 5 of the box set..or the "Breakaway" demo...). So it's not so much a specific track here but the notion that merely hearing the track by itself..or the vocals by itself..from the official version is a "rarity". I think Capitol needs to rethink focusing so much time and attention on those. I'll likely want to hear the next vault collection BEFORE I buy for that reason.

BOTTOM LINE:
Completism is a sickness. Even though I know there's a lot on here I'll only listen to once or twice, I got it for the OTHER stuff..and in spite of the purchase price, I'd probably buy it again for the same tracks. It's still cheaper than the boots. *sigh*

3 out of 5 stars Some great stuff, but little essential.......2005-03-11

The material on this set is very interesting, and much of it is well worth having, but I speak that as a hardcore Beach Boys fan-- to a more casual fan, this is really extraneous.

Of the 57 tracks on here, 17 of them are spoken pieces, interviews mostly, culled from the archives. While they're interesting and usually sentimental, there's nothing really revelatory in this.

Beyond that, there's a bunch of studio recording session excerpts ("Salt Lake City", "Wish That He Could Stay", "Carol K"/"Little Girl", "Barbara Ann", and "Good Vibrations"). These are all interesting, but if you're not intrigued by the construction process, this will seem largely extraneous. The "Carol K" one I particularly enjoyed, but "Little Girl" is one of my favorite Beach Boys tunes, so this is no surprise.

Additionally, there's several tracks that are isolated backing track-- songs without the vocals, Stack-o-Tracks style-- "Surfin' USA", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Good to My Baby", "Be With Me", and "Sail On Sailor"). Again, these are quite interesting, but only to someone more interested in the process of the creation of the songs.

Matching a bunch of backing tracks are a bunch of vocal only tracks-- these might be more exciting to the casual fan as we get to hear those great harmonies without any instruments. On some of them, particularly "Kiss Me Baby" and "Forever", there were vocal parts I had never previously identified that were masked by or doubling instruments. There's also a capella mixes for "Can't Wait too Long" (a brilliant short edit), "I Went to Sleep" and "Add Some Music". And two Party tracks, "Barbara Ann" and "Devoted to You" are presented without overdubs.

With the exception of what I'll discuss below, the rest of the material is alternate/extended versions, much of this ("Little Girl", "Time to Get Alone") is really nice and I'm glad to have them, but again, not anything thats exciting.

The exciting material is the couple of new songs presented here-- "You're With Me Tonight" (mixed from previously unused recordings), "Lonely Days", and a great unreleased Dennis gem called "A Time to Live in Dreams". These three alone make this set worth its weight in gold to any fan, but to the more casual listener, and even to less devoted fans, this is really quite unnecessary.

Album Description

It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.

Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.

Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.

Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

4 out of 5 stars Memphis moods.......2004-02-18

16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.

Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.

Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.

Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.

Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

4 out of 5 stars HOTNESS.......2005-02-08

This album is truly making waves...it is a definite must for those who love music and are tired of hearing the same old thang. I just went to one of their live shows last weekend and it was incredible! If you can believe it, it was better than the album itself. Free Sol's band is just magic!!! I would suggest that people buy this album and go out and see their shows. You will not be disappointed!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars free sol rocks!.......2005-01-17

This cd has a lot of good music on it, even if you don't like the lyrics, you'll probably like the music. I was also at that New Orleans show and I agree that these guys are really great! They have mad energy and were really down to earth. I think it would be awesome if these guys were more popular. It would be great if they did a project with musiq or raphael saadiq!

3 out of 5 stars CD= ok, Live= AMAZING.......2004-12-12

ok, Now since i am the first person to even probably take a look at this cd on this website...thats a bad sign. Free Sol's 11:11 as a cd, overall is decent...nothing super special or intriguing. Lyrics are sometimes childish (i.e. To keep from crying ima roll up the fattest blunt you've ever seen....wow,deep)...the instrumentals are a mix between the roots and other soul superstars like musiq, eryka badu, and jill scott. BUT and this is a HUGE but, I just saw them Live at a small club in New Orleans and they were AMAZING...honestley, better than the black eyed peas in terms of energy, lyrics....and they played like 6 new songs, (album coming out in 2 months according to the guitarist) and it is going to be HOT, if this group does anything on Cd like they do live, they r gunna Blow Up....so go see thier shows... and buy the CD cuz they are pretty hot....

Album Description

AS HOPE DIES have thrived since the release of their debut EP, Birth Place and Burial Site. Their newest offering, Legions Bow To A Faceless God, is a nine track towering trip through total devastation. More focused and mature than ever before, this album is a sincere outpouring of total emotion. It begs for total attention from willing and focused ears, and unlike its contemporaries, its bludgeoning song writing and crushing hooks are mind numbing. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, AS HOPE DIES' debut fulllength from UNDECIDED RECORDS is aruly awe-inspiring masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Legions Bow To a Faceless God.......2006-11-27

As Hope Dies stumbles into the ground w/ this release. Personally, I'd never heard of the band before I'd seen them here. After reading the reviews, I decided to give them a shot. Good production, good artwork, decent lyrics, but no originality musicwise. To me, they sound like a knockoff of Darkest Hour or As I Lay Dying, which in fact, play this genre of music w/ more originality. The lack of deviation in songwriting formula is what buries this CD in mediocrity. If that is what you're looking for in your music, you'll definitely find it here.

5 out of 5 stars A MILLION THUMBS UP.......2005-08-24

If you like hardcore, thrash or just fast stuff, welcome to your new favorite band. The band has been through some break ups but here they are with this. All the musicians are incrediable and peice together music better than i have ever heard before. Good rifts, drum beats, and good melodies at the right spot and it doesnt kill the hardcore style. Cant foret if you like screamers this vocalist is the vocalistis the best that has ever lived. Very powerful voice and very deep lyrics.Changes his style of screaming when least expected. This is by far the most powerful band i have ever heard. They have no bad songs at all. They are my favorite band. They have another ep out but good luck finding i got mine from there drummer.

5 out of 5 stars oh yeah.......2004-09-16

ok first of all the name of the band is 'As Hope Dies' not Hope Dies its even on their labels website. http://www.undecidedrecords.com/bands/ahd.php I've listened to these guys since their debut EP entitled 'Birthplace & Burial Site' they got back together and followed their EP up with another masterpiece. 'Legions Bow...' is beyond description they said they wanted more melody which they accomplished but did not sacrifice their brutal tones in any way if anything this cd is heavier then their debut. This cd is so powerfully driven by these musicians it is unstoppable it may not be the longest cd but it is an epic in its own right. The level of intensity this album brings is insane the music is beautifully raw giving it a true personal feel.

5 out of 5 stars One of the classics..........2007-02-22

for me anyway. Don't perceive this for a metal e.p. though. I love this band but if there is one thing they are not, it's metal. Nowadays it's very common for alot of bands to attach the label metal to their genre especially in the very talent lost hardcore scene. This is a hardcore band influenced heavily by European melodic metal acts like At The Gates, In Flames and black metal acts like Dissection. The vocalist takes his vocal pattern from most of those artists and the rythm section has written a massive attack of shredding metal guitars and mixes them with their hardcore roots in the drums and bass. This is a great e.p. from a metalcore band that added technicality and emotion to metalcore. One of the last good hardcore bands you'll ever hear and if you pick his up today you'll be listening to it ten years from now appreciating how ahead of it's time and truely golden this recording is. If you like this you should pick up End This Day, 7Angels 7Plagues, or Undying.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2004-10-08

For being a metal album, this disc is still very easy to get into no matter what genre of music you are really into. Every single person in the band is ridiculously talented. Crushing screams are balenced out by beautiful melodic bliss, the drumming is tight and raw, and the riffs are some of the best metal guitar I've ever heard. I dare you to find catchier guitar parts, the only other band that comes close is As I Lay Dying, but As Hope Dies and them do not sound alike at all. This is basically an extremely well put together CD, with a lot of replay value. If you are looking for flat out damn good music, As Hope Dies is it. Personal favorites - "My Words to You" (intense), and "Letters of Our Existence" (sick melodic breakdown and one of the best guitar riffs I've heard in a while)

5 out of 5 stars Brutal Yet Melodic.......2004-03-05

This six song EP entitled "Birthplace and Burrial Site" by As Hope Dies is simply a masterpiece. Every song is insanely brutal, yet is always melodic at the same time. The screams of the singer sends chills down my spine. From a musical standpoint, I would have to say As Hope Dies is the most talented band I have heard. It is a shame they broke up. I wouldnt know how to classify the genre this band belongs in because I have never heard any band like them. They have been compared to At the Gates by some, but even that isnt accurate. If you like brutal melodic music you should definitely pick this up (however you wont find this at your local Sam Goody).

This is the disc to get if you want Pete. After hearing the Decca tapes, Tony Sheridan Recordings, bootleg BBC tracks, one Cavern track backing Gene Vincent, Interviews, Anthology 1, Lee Curtis & The All Stars, and Pete Best Four/Combo tracks/albums, I wanted to hear something new and fresh (and professionally mixed)! The live C.D. Back To The Beat was so-so but this one was a pleasant suprise. The track that stands out to me was Sweet Nothings. Everyone I know that likes the 60's-70's Rock, Blues Rock type of genre was into this song. I picked up this C.D. in Manhattan when I met Pete and Roag at a collectors show. Good disc! Well worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars Best "Beatles" retrorock.......2001-04-25

This cd-along with "live at the Adelphi" presents Pete Bests band performing a number of 60's standards live. The music is a fine trip down memory lane--or a good introduction to music from that era if it's new to you. Pete and his brother both play drums-so it's never quite clear which one you're hearing--so what? Is Pete a better drummer than Ringo? I don't know-they're both better drummers than me!!! (About the only way to clearly here Pete Best on the drum is on the Tony Sheridan/Beatles album or on the Decca audition tapes--on each of these-his drumming sounds fine to me) Actually, just listen to this for what it is--a good live performace of some great old songs.
