1 out of 5 stars Prog Metal at a True Nadir.......2004-04-08

You can't review a prog metal album without the obligatory raving about the musicians' technical abilities (I'm convinced that many prog reviews are simply erudite versions of "My guy can play more intricate material than your guy!" in a sort of classical music meets kids from the wrong side of the tracks snob fight). OK, I'll admit it. The band members have talent, and they know how to make some nifty melodies from time to time, but effective songs, they make not. It's like every song exists just to showcase the prowess of the musicians. The vocals, while excellent, are just an afterthought. That's a shame, because the lead singer has a fine voice capable of everything from screaming to spooky growls to emotion-choked wails to powerful singing.

The album falls prey to the same problems that beset genre-combining bands in general, and prog metal bands in specific -- how to use the best of the genres and make it work? In the case of prog metal, you risk the music sounding weak and emasculated (as it does here), dreadfully long and boring (as it does here) and prone to noodling and without hooks or cohesion (guess what).

But whither the metal? Hint: playing guitars very fast does not automatically create heavy music. You sound like Shadowfax rather than Slayer. Even Tourniquet's brand of speedy progressive thrash outshines Antithesis; at least Tourniquet brings the music into focus with killers like "Trivializing the Momentous, Complicating the Obvious."

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2001-08-19

This is some of the best heavy metal I've heard in years, and I'm glad I bought it. This CD will be well worth the money if you like your metal heavy, technical, and VERY powerful. Highly recommended for fans of Nevermore, Dream Theater, and any Progressive Power metal.

5 out of 5 stars These guys can play.......2001-07-23

This album leaves no doubt that the members of Antithesis know how to play their instruments extremely well. They also can write complex music. This album can best be described as precision metal. Think Dream Theater or Symphony X for a good comparison.

If you like a little complexity in your metal, then Antithesis is worth checking out. Great stuff !!

        Album Description

First time on CD for their third album, originally released in 1972 on RCA. The songs on this album, while still beauti fully arranged and featuring the group's signature harmonies, were considerably shorter in length than their previous two releases. 12 tracks. 1999 release.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Buyer beware........2006-02-20

First, let me say I love this album and have considered it to be a valuable part of my collection for nearly 30 years. I originally purchased the cassette(!) in 1977 and played it to death. In the mid eighties, I located an original RCA Dynaflex pressing, which sounded better than the cassette, but didn't stand up to repeated playings (black vinyl literally was shaved off each time I played it). I happily bought this CD from Bedrock when it first became available. The good news is that someone has seen fit to produce a CD of this great music by Gypsy. The bad news is...it's from a vinyl copy. If the unmistakeable sound of vinyl equalization (especially at the end of the sides) doesn't tip you off, the subtle (but definitely present) surface noise and occasional static will. Granted, it's from a very good vinyl copy, but it's still vinyl-a far cry from what the CD should be made from: the two track, unequalized stereo master. My rating for this item consists of a 5 for the material and a 1 for the presentation. I apologize for raining on anyone's parade, but I believe everyone should know the truth about this release. There is no misrepresentation here (the CD says nothing about the source of the audio), but neither is there any acknowledgment that is IS indeed taken from a vinyl album. While I am happy to listen to the CD I have, for now I can only imagine how great a proper remastering would sound.

5 out of 5 stars The Heartless SOB asking $99.00.......2005-11-16

I grew up with these guys and have been a collector for many years. I buy them whenever I can so others can enjoy music that will soon be impossible to find. The cd that I am trying to screw everyone on I paid $75.00 for and after amazons commission I will make a whole 10 or 15 dollars on for my time and effort. So excuse me for being such a heartless SOB and you can search the garage sales and try to find a 50 cent bargin cd since to me you are as cheap as I am heartless.

5 out of 5 stars Please re-release this on CD!!!!!.......2005-05-29

I wish the record company would release this and put an end to the money hungry, heartless sharks who will screw you out of $99.00 for this.....am not saying that it isn't a great CD...because it is......I just refuse to pay an obscene amount for any cd....because just about the time you do.....they will release it for regular price.

I hope these people who feel they can justify screwing somebody out of $99.00 for a CD....can live with themselves....

If it's such a GREAT cd...why are they so willing to part with it?

        5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2003-07-21

All of the Gypsy titles are some of the best music ever produced and you never heard of them. Tsk Tsk. This band had a lot of bad luck to blame for that. I grew up in Stl where they were a cult favorite. Buy this album and buy the first self titled album and also 'In the garden' and you Wont only Not go wrong, youll be shaking your head and wondering whats wrong with the world that youve never heard this. All 3 albums are timeless masterpieces that Id take with me on that deserted island after all the nukes were dropped to preserve and play for future civilizations who thanks to me will think this is what Rock is all about instead of aerosmith.

          Album Description

Cleveland based ANTITHESIS bring their self-titled, full length, debut CD to the metal industry and fans. Recorded at AudioWorks studios in Cleveland, Ohio, with engineering by the talented Ed Tomecko, and self produced, Antithesis clearly demonstrates intentions of becoming a force in the progressive metal scene. Antithesis brings the listener a variety of heavy grooves, intense vocal and instrumental harmonies, and a full compliment of melodic hooks all equaling some of the most creative, thought provoking compositions for the progressive thinking mans genre.. Antithesis was compiled with the efforts of accomplished guitarist Sean Perry, the lyrical depth and vocal talents of Ty Cook, drummer Paul Kostyack, and bassist James Lewis. Antithesis will take the listener from one emotional plane to the next, picking up non-traditional metal fans along the way. For the music fan, metal or otherwise, Antithesis is everything you would want, expect, and more.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Good ... but not a standout release.......2001-01-04

With this debut, Antithesis definitely demonstrates their potential to be a major player in the prog metal game. With exceptional playing and intriguing song-writing, the pieces were all there, but still this album just seemed to be missing something (other than superior production) that would make it all come together. The overall feel to the album gave the impression that the band was indecisive as to just what kind of metal they wanted to be: traditional, progressive, power, or technical. The album has its brighter moments -- and its duller ones -- and while I'd consider it a good release, nothing about the album really jumped way out. In my opinion, the band could have really benefited by adding some piano or keyboard work into the mix. Taken as a whole, I think this is a band to watch. What this debut offers, I think, would probably be more appreciated by fans of the more technical side of progressive metal, however I didn't really get the impression that these guys wanted to be a tech-metal band. It'll be interesting to see what Antithesis' sophomore effort brings us....

5 out of 5 stars Wow, these guys are great..........2000-12-14

If you like bands like treasure land and iced earth, these guys are a perfect mix. They've got the great technical prowess of treasure land (who by the way were heavily influenced by Malmsteen) and the great power metal sound of Iced earth. I actually give this album a 4.8 out of 5, but they don't have that option :) I highly recommend this CD to fans of shred guitar and heavy metal, this is an excellent mix of both. I can't wait until the next album, these guys will become recognized as one of the great (sort of prog) metal bands one day.

2 out of 5 stars Possibly the best terible metal compialation ever.......2004-08-20

This is a compialation that i aquired about 5 years ago when i was first discovering the metal genre. At the time i didnt like anything that i heard on the album. Recently i pulled it out of the closet and gave it a spin in hopes of getting some good laughs out of the Horrible album. I was thuroughly dissapointed when i realized that i was actually enjoying the cd now that my musical tastes have matured. It is whithout a doubt a terrible cd, but it has some hidden pleasures that any metal/deathmetal fan can enjoy. some of the highlights are,
track 1, some band called covenant( not to be confused with kovenant) this song is way cheesey but has a substantial metal factor that kicks some ace.
track 3, canadian band named erase, this song is pretty heavy, almost hardcore type sound.
track 4, an insane band named frank's enemy, i cant even discribe the madness that this track is generates. think thrash, trash, smash, crash, ash, dash, bash
track 7, S.O.G., this track is ok, vocals are entertaining.
track 9, pretty heavy death chugging via a band named Vindication.
the rest of the album is a blur except the last one which takes the cake for being the most kick ass song, and heaviest song on the compialation. the band is Crimson Thorn the song is Dissection, the genre is death metal, and the guitars are tuned way low, ooooh yeeeeaah. it made me a fan.
