Anyone who is still clueless about what a great singer Ronnie Dunn is need only grab this second greatest-hits package from Brooks & Dunn, a 17-song compilation that skims the commercial high points from the duo's 1998-2004 period. Dunn, the quintessential balladeer, soars on honky-tonk laments and reminiscences like "Red Dirt Road" and "How Long Gone," and on full-throated romantic plaints like "That's What She Gets for Loving Me" and "It's Getting Better All the Time." His sidekick, the underrated guitarist, utility singer, and all-around dynamo Kix Brooks, also gets his moment to shine on a marvelous '60s-style, 18-wheeler ditty called "Independent Trucker," one of three new cuts included here. --Bob Allen

Real Country.......2007-04-12
It's amazing to think they have more than enough for another greatest hits compilation! Full of originals that will always be greatest hits.
something missing .......2007-02-16
Ok, you see two stars up there and you start thinking to yourself "what
could possibly be wrong with this album" Well, there is something wrong
with this album. If you do not believe me then look it up for yourself.
This does have great songs on here and all of their hits to mention that.
But I just noticed something, and I have had this album for a year or
two. There is three songs that is not on here that was hits on the radio.
They might not have been big hits, but they did get air play. (missing
you) from their "tight rope" album (you'll always be loved by me) from
their "tight rope" album and (I am that man) from the "boarderline" album.
Brooks And Dunn - always Great!.......2007-01-09
I love this cd and all the songs on it! There is a great variety of their style music for all to enjoy. I would be hardpressed to find a favorite! I have other cd's of theirs and they are all good - including the Christmas cd. If you are a fan of theirs you will really enjoy this cd!
impressive/holds its own.......2006-11-04
While this collection doesn't quite hold up to the duo's first greatest hits compilation, it is still good. Hits like "How Long Gone," "The Long Goodbye," and "South of Santa Fe" are good choices for this album, which pretty much holds its own. If you are a fan of Brooks & Dunn, odds are you will like this album. The duo is still good after all these years, and I hope whey will continue for many more.
Great collection and service........2005-09-06
I was very pleased with the cd and the prompt service I received.

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.
A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki

Love it.......2007-02-24
Bought a copy for a trip to Kauai. Listened to it while I was there and now all we have to do is slip the disc on to be transported back to the islands (at least if we keep our eyes closed and try real hard to imagine).
The music is sublime.
Delicious!.......2007-01-09
I am hooked on this music and could play this CD day and night.
beautiful.......2006-06-01
This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals. I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father! Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it. Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.
2006 GRAMMY WINNER!!!.......2006-02-25
This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...
Slack key has come into it's own, many prominent guitar players are following these talented Hawaiians around, learning their new tricks and their old traditional ways. (In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)
This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.
All I can say is, MORE! MORE! MORE!
Please, more slack key without vocals!!!.......2005-11-22
That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise!

The most surprising track on this collection isn't hidden between blockbusters selections from the blockbuster Lloyd Webber songbook but is located in plain view right at the beginning of the CD. The previously unreleased "Probably on Thursday" was originally written as a pop song in 1967 and indeed sounds very much like a forgotten gem by an obscure 1960s pop singer. It's absolutely delightful and the last thing you'd expect from a composer best known for neoclassical bombast. Another surprise is another previously unreleased song, this one from Sunset Boulevard: "The Perfect Year" is a sweet ballad, and Brightman smartly doesn't oversell it. In fact, the CD decidedly emphasizes the singer's more subtle side rather than her vocal pyrotechnics---"Make Up My Heart" from Starlight Express and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar are particularly nice. The cache of previously unreleased songs also includes guest apperances by the likes of Michael Ball ("Seeing Is Believing") and John Barrowman ("Too Much in Love to Care"), but there's never any doubt as to who the star of this CD is. And deservedly so. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A handsome Part 2 of Brightman's ALW songbook.......2007-05-25
I've long hoped that one day all of Sarah Brightman's recordings of Lord Lloyd-Webber songs would be released together in one comprehensive collection. This handsome CD, a sequel to her better-known Lloyd-Webber collection, is a treasure-trove of gems, focussing on lesser-known recordings and boasting several unreleased tracks. Brightman tackles a wide range of songs from the Phantom theme to a beguiling Spanish version of Don't Cry For Me, Argentina. But there are rarities on this collection: we get to hear Brightman shine in Mary Magdelene's two songs from Superstar, and kick back in her rendition of Any Dream Will Do, which we normally associate with Donny Osmond or Jason Donovan. Half the CD is made up of rarities and duets. It is a treat o hear her duet with Sir Cliff Richard on the B-side of the All I Ask of You single, Only You, and also her take on the Sunset Boulevard song, Too Much in Love to Care. It is also a treat to hear her in two songs from Starlight Express, and also in the unreeased early ALW song, Probably on Thursday. I konw this collecion reprised her recording of Think of Me from the Phantom London Cast album, and also her lovely rendition of Whistle Down the Wind, but it really makes it a treat to buy this collection without splurging on the other CD. A pity that this CD doesn't include Half a Moment from Jeeves, as there would surely have been enough space. A pity also that the rare song English Girls was left off the CD too, let alone the Spanish version of Amigos Para Sempre. In short, a lovely sequel to her ALW Collection volume 1, and perhaps more worthy than the hastily-assembled Encore collection. Now if only Decca and Really Useful might consider combining all of Brightman's ALW recordings into a comprehensive set...
Lovely listening!.......2007-04-03
Sarah Brightman has a beautiful voice, and this selection of songs is just made for her. I really enjoyed this CD when I first checked it out at my local library -- and then I decided to buy it new, something I don't do except when I REALLY like the CD and intend to listen it it over and over.
The quality of her voice, the other performers, and the variety of Webber songs makes for an excellent combination!
a must.......2007-01-30
an outstanding collection of songs that prove the consummate vocalist in all her glory. No one else has so wonderfully bridged the gap between opera and pop. This one's a keeper.
Love Changes Everything: Andrew Lloyd Webber Vol. 2.......2007-01-13
The CD was ok, but I prefer Vol. 1
A Great New Compilation from Sarah Brightman!!!.......2006-04-09
I was a bit sceptical when this album was released since I owned 3 other albums with Sarah Brightman singing ALW songs: "Sarah Brightman Sings ALW" "Surrender: The Unexpected Songs" and "The ALW Collection Vol. 1" But when I read the song list, it does sound interesting to me so I decided to just go and grab one.
I was totally surprised at how this album was presented. I really like this side of Sarah Brightman. We usually portray Miss Brightman as a big powerful high-pitched soprano kinda singer, which sometimes nice but can get a bit annoying at times. But this album features more of Sarah's relaxing side. She sings all the songs softly and beautifully with a little flair of pop music as well. Most of the songs end with a fade out not with a big powerful Broadway-like ending. And her repertoire here is really interesting. Firstly, it doesn't repeat other albums that much. It also has 7 previously unreleased songs out of 14. That's half the album! Here's my thoughts on each of them:
#1 PROBABLY ON THURSDAY: This was an unreleased song. It sounds more like a pop song than traditional Broadway. But Sarah sings it wonderfully.
#2 THE PERFECT YEAR: From Sunset Boulevard, This unreleased version resembles Dina Carroll's version to me but Sarah has her own take on the song which makes it more gentle and beautiful.
#3 ONLY YOU: From Starlight Express, I'm sure we all have heard Sarah's duet with Cliff Richard in All I Ask of You. But here's another wonderful duet, previously unreleased.
#4 LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING: From Aspects of Love, Some of you might think "Oh C'mon, we have this song in ALW Collection Vol. 1" Well, folks, this is another version of it and, may I say, a better one. This unreleased version has a completely new take on the song. She sings it softly and it sounds so relaxing and she didn't go all the way to that strainful high note in the end like in the previous album (which I hate). This version has a soft ending and it's wonderful!!!
#5 SEEING IS BELIEVING: From Aspects of Love, This is so awesome, Sarah, who once played Rose in Aspects, singing with the original Alex, Michael Ball. What more could you ask!
#6 THINK OF ME: From The Phantom, This is taken from the Original London Cast Recording so no doubt that it's wonderful. I think the reason why they chose this songs is that they ran out of songs from Phantom since 4 of them was featured on Vol. 1
#7 ANY DREAM WILL DO: From Joseph, This song can be found on "Sarah Brightman sings ALW" album. But that album is very old and most of the people might not own it. So I think it's good that they included it here in a newer album. The music sounds exactly the same as the cast recording album just with a female voice instead, nice!!!
#8 I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM: From Jesus Christ Superstar, I found this song on 2 albums, "The Very Best of ALW" and "Sarah Brightman sings ALW" The first time I heard this, I thought to myself this is the best version of the song ever. I like Sarah's take on this more than Yvonne Elliman, really. Don't boo me for that.
#9 TOO MUCH IN LOVE TO CARE: From Sunset Boulevard, Here's another of our previously unreleased. Sarah sings this with the brilliant John Barrowman. This is my favourite songs from the show but not many singers recorded it. So I was really excited to see this song on the list and it didn't disappoint me at all.
#10 THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: Then my nightmare comes. Sorry but I really hate this version of the song. I don't like Steve Harley's style and this song always appear on every compilation album. But one bad song couldn't hurt this wonderful album. Just skip it. As I said, they just need some songs from this show since it's what made Sarah a star. And Michael Crawford's version was on Vol. 1 already.
#11 MAKE UP MY HEART: From Starlight Express, Our last unreleased song. I really like it. I have to admit that I have never heard this song before since I didn't own the new Starlight Express album. But it's wonderful and a little heart-wrenching, don't you think... :)
#12 NO LLORES POR MI ARGENTINA: From Evita, This is the Spanish version of Don't Cry for Me Argentina. I really like it when Sarah sings the songs in other language. It's something about her voice that suits these beautiful languages. This song is also featured on "Surrender".
#13 EVERYTHING'S ALRIGHT: From Jesus Christ Superstar, This song can be found on "Sarah Brightman sings ALW" and "Surrender". It's wonderful to here Sarah as Mary Magdalene. The guys singing here are just so-so. It's Sarah who's the star!
#14 WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND: Then we came to our last song. I'm so glad they included this song on this album. The song only features on "Encore" which I didn't own for I think the repertoire didn't interest me. This song is a wonderful exit music for the album. It's beautiful. It's nice. It's great!!!
Wow, this is a long comment, huh? Anyway, for those of you who are thinking of getting Sarah's album with an all-Andrew-Lloyd songs. Here's the bottom line. If you own the Vol. 1 already, just buy it! It's much much better and the song didn't repeat itself. If you own the other album with Sarah singing Andrew's songs, you should get this too just for the 7 new songs. If you are going to buy your first Sarah's album, I'd recommend this one and "Surrender" (which might be a bit pricy but the songs are great there too) Don't get the Vol. 1, it's not that good! Hope my comments help!
P.S. If you're interested in some other people singing Andrew Lloyd Webber's songs, try "Michael Crawford Performs Andrew Lloyd Webber", it's great too!

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05
This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

The engaging poetry!.......2006-12-19
One of the maxim exponents of Chopin in the first decades of the Century was undeniably Arthur Rubinstein. He knew to create - if I may - the perfect link between image and the Polish sentiment ; although the pioneer in this sense was Ignaz Jan Paderewski. Lodz was his birthplace and if Chopin was a self exiled in his historical moment., Rubinstein must have taken into account in September 1 1939.
He nourished the last traces of a dying romanticism - as well as Rachmaninov did it - after his forced exile from URSS. His golden sound was far from the tragic approach given by of Alfred Cortot, for instance. He played the piano according the canons of the artist of the Century XIX, expression and sentimentality, hovered by an ardent nationalism that still inflamed the poetic imagination in some corners of the world, specially in the enormous immigrant wave who chose different places in America in order to search a promised land.
His direct phrasing without intellectual or philosophical approaches deserved to him a special name in the Western hemisphere.
He is now part of the keyboard's legend as well as one of the Chopin`s champions.
Still beautiful to me.......2005-11-04
As a piano student during the 1950s and early 1960s, I remember that there were "knock down drag out" arguments between the "pro-Rubinstein" factions and the "anti-Rubinstein" factions of the classical piano performing world. I was made keenly aware of the aforesaid because my piano instructor was a "dye-hard" member of the "anti-Rubinstein" faction. Rebelliously, I purchased all of the Rubinstein recordings that I could get my little untalented hands on including this recording of Chopin's Waltzes. I remember loving them at the time as I still do now that I've restored this recording on CD to my collection.
Rubinstein's performance in this recording really touches my very soul. Upon hearing this recording again, I'm reminded of how much I loved them almost 50 years ago. Whatever one may call his playing (eccentric, sentimental, syrupy, etc.) it certainly has retained its appeal to me--as a young person or now as an older person. (Note: Rubinstein particularly plays the "sad little" waltzes in minor keys exquisitely!)
If you want to hear a master (at least to me) of Chopin playing some wonderful works, buy this disc.
barcode piano for barcode lovers everywhere!.......2005-04-23
i must repeat myself over and over again.STAY AWAY FROM RUBINSTEIN.his playing is just too eccentric its as if he was abducted by aliens and had chopins works downloaded into his brain.what you get is a sort of robotic chemistry with a dire attempt to sound artistic.
these high reviews do baffle me to oblivion.
Artur Rubinstein great recording of Chopinýs Bolero, Waltzes.......2004-01-05
Artur Rubinstein great recording of Chopin's Bolero and 14 Waltzes
By Peter Dietrich, president, Chopin Society of New England
Artur Rubinstein's performance of the fourteen waltzes seems to be among the definitive versions. This stereo recording from a one day session in June of 1963, issued on BMG in the Rubinstein collection volume 47, and the earlier version first issued on LP RCA Victor LM-1892 recorded in December, 1953 and issued on BMG Rubinstein collection volume 29, equals in sound and profound understanding the two great versions by Alexander Brailowsky (1896-1976) recorded in the early fifties on LP for RCA Victor LM-1082 as well as the stereo recording from the early sixties issued on Sony Music SBK 46346 in 1990.
The four recordings are milestones of the classical waltzes. Their interpretations have achieved expert fluidity with grace and elegance of nobility. As Robert Schumann remarked "should be danced at least by countesses." To the above recordings I will add Dinu Lipatti's recording issued by EMI in the Great Recordings of the Century series. My opinion is based on hearing a great number of outstanding as well as good performances through more than fifty years. I will just list several additional names from my collection who have recorded fourteen waltzes: 1) Robert Lortat (1930), 2) Alfred Cortot (1934 and 1943), 3) Edward Kilenyi (1952), 4) Moura Lympany (1959), 5) Witold Malcuzynski (1959), 6) Regina Smendzianka (1959 and 1961), 7) Samson Francois (1964), 8) Stefan Askenase (1964), 9) Adam Harasiewicz (1965), 10) Tamas Vassary (1966); pianists who have recorded nineteen waltzes: 1) Augustin Anievas (1970), 2) Geoges Cziffra (1979), 3) Claudio Arrau (1980 - several of the waltzes are played too slow), 4) Vladimir Ashkenazy (1984), 5) Lidia Grychtolowna (1989), 6) Istvan Szekely (1992), 7) Garrick Ohlsson (1996 - 20 waltzes in this recording) 8) Jerzy Sterczynski (1996 - 23 waltzes, which will be discussed in the future).
The famous Polish poet Kazimierz Wierzynski author of the "Life and Death of Chopin" (1949) makes the following observation. "Chopin's Waltzes have little or nothing in common with the atmosphere of the ballroom. Niecks calls them Tanzdichtungen (dance poems). How does Rubinstein play the Chopin Waltzes? Surely, their worldliness and elegance are particularly suited to this worldly and elegant pianist whose incomparable virtuosity goes hand in hand with his unique feeling for Chopin. Without in the least sentimentalizing Chopin, Rubinstein fully renders his warmth: he is the ideal interpreter of the waltzes in which tenderness is so subtly blended with sparkle, playfulness and deep emotion."
Other Chopin works included in this compilation are the four impromptus recorded in 1964 and the Bolero recorded in 1962. Harvey Sachs, author of Rubinstein's biography published by Grove Press, New York, 1995, wrote the following notes for this compilation: "The 1964 version of the Impromptus, heard here is typical of the beautifully poised, yet deeply poetic Chopin recordings that Rubinstein made in his seventies as a sort of summa of his interpretations of the music of his great compatriot." However, the glory of this compilation is the Bolero in A Major, Op. 19. Until the Rubinstein recording in 1962 when he was almost 75 years old, this work was "obscure" Chopin, almost completely forgotten and recorded very seldom as well as terribly underrated. Despite the obscurity of the work for such a long time, there are several recordings of it in existence. I will list the notable recordings from my collection according to their release:
1) Adam Harasiewicz, Philips (1972); 2) Arnaldo Cohen, Dischi Ricordi, LP (1978); 3) Nikita Magaloff, Philips (1979); 4) Vladimir Ashkenazy, London/Decca (1987); 5) Georges Cziffra, EMI (1987); 6) Nelly Ben-Or, Meridian Records (1989); 7) Idil Biret, Naxos (1993); 8) Garrick Ohlsson, Arabesque, vol. 8 (1997); 9) Emil von Saur (recorded 1940) Arbiter (1998); 10) Anatol Ugorski, Chopin Complete Edition DG, vol. 7 (1999).
All the above recordings, although inspired performances and technically excellent, do not reveal the hidden beauty of the dance, as does Artur Rubinstein in his performance. Mr. Rubinstein unhurried tempos and magical play with the pedal plus his affinity for Spanish music brings this work to interpretative splendid heights unknown until his recording and since. These five star performances are highly recommended for every music lover.
The Great Chopin Master.......2003-07-26
This CD is superb. It shows the best of Rubinstein's Chopin. He did this CD with so much clearness and feeling. Rubinstein ends the CD with the little known Bolero. I reccomend it a lot.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues--"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"--coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. --Daniel Durchholz

I...Think...This...Is...My...Laaaaaast...Chaaaaaance!.......2005-05-17
All the other 10 songs I've heard 100 times already but "My Last Chance", Marvin's obscure 1972 recording that was a posthomuous 1991 hit on the Billboard Hot R&B singles chart (peaking at #16), is enough to want to buy this compilation. The song alone garners four stars. It's Marvin Gaye, dammit. LOL
There are better compilations for the money.......2001-11-08
The songs here all great examples of Marvin Gaye's later material. Unfortunately there are other single and double disc compilations that include more later material and some of his fantastic early recordings as well. For the money, buy a copy of the 2001 "Very Best of" double CD which contains the best of his Motown recordings as well as music released on Columbia in the later years. The songs here are great but will leave you wanting more (there's no "Sexual Healing"). Save a few bucks more and buy the "Very Best Of" new or used. You can build your collection from there.

Good Sampler, But It Makes Me Wanna Holla..........2000-04-13
...it has MPG's masterworks, "What's Goin' On", "Trouble Man", "Let's Get It On", "I Want You" and a treat in the Marvin & Diana cut "You're A Special Part of Me", but they were done in a compilation somewheres already and done better. Good for the 1st time Marv fan, but other than that stick to the Original albums produced by Motown and Columbia records.

Rubinstein's is not the only way to play Chopin. Ignaz Friedman, Cortot, Horowitz, Wild, Cherkassky, and others have given us Chopin performances of incredible artistry and individuality, but Rubinstein's more objective interpretive stance set the model for succeeding generations of Chopin players. This welcome reissue from RCA's monster set of the pianist's complete recordings helps explain why his Chopin is still revered. The 1959 version of the Ballades is memorable thanks to his big, bronze tone, subtle rubato, and ability to make the keyboard sing like a great operatic diva. The great G minor Ballade illustrates Rubinstein's way with the music--the pregnant pauses in the introduction never overdone, the tenuous theme sung with quiet exactitude, the bold passages played with waves of sound that are never harsh or disproportionate, the whole coming off like a story told by a master narrator. The directness of Rubinstein's playing also suits the Scherzos, bravura pieces that the pianist recorded three times in his career. This 1959 stereo recording may miss some of the impetuosity of the earlier versions, but its stronger structural sense and subtlety make it compelling. Sonics are much improved over previous releases. --Dan Davis

What can you expect........2007-07-05
I bought this CD with the full knowledge of Rubinstein's ability to mesmerize worlds of people with his Chopin. His Ballades and Scherzi are no exception. Some pieces are not to my exact tastes but are very mature interpretations which one should expect from such a maestro of the piano. Great composer, great performer, great music.
nevermind the flying dutchman reviewer..........2006-05-06
...in his words:"This is by far the most transcendental recording of the chopin ballades ever created. Don't pay attention to karan jamal, he's obviously just an ignorant anti-semitic, arrogant idiot. Anyone who would give this recording 1 star knows nothing about music, which is apparent from the way the lone 1 star review was written.">>>>Now thats comedy. That made me laugh my a$$ off...........the only thing transcendental is the cheap air this recording gives off,not to mention the dutchman's transcendental stupidity.I've played classical music all my life from cello&violin to piano. If i know nothing about music it should be strange that within a month of learning piano i started work on liszt's transcendental etudes and am now up to the 5th etude after a year of hard work;and i stand by my 1 star review of this incorrigible recording. And my consolences to the poor chap who believes these are fine recordings;some of us after all are cursed with bad genes.
A testament to Rubinstein's greatness, and Chopin's.......2006-01-24
If someone wished to make a case for Rubinstein's genius not only as a Chopin interpreter, but as a pianist of the first rank, they'd need do little more than offer this one recording as evidence. The control of melodic line, lift, chordal technique, brilliance in ornamentation and fioriture - all of them are at the service of Chopin's conception, but come together with a sound that can only have been made by Rubinstein. Perhaps most moving is the first ballade; the grandeur of the main E major theme has never been brought out so compellingly, and the closing Gm section is nothing short of demonic. I've listened to this recording well over a thousand times, and have explored every other commercially-available recording of the ballades. Nothing quite compares. If I had only one piano record, perhaps even only one record of any kind, to choose for the proverbial desert island, this one would be it.
Definitive Chopin? I think not.......2006-01-03
Initially, I was suckered into buying this CD from a classical music guide that touted this CD as one of Rubinstein's greatest. Fortunately, His Ballade in G minor lives up to the hype. I love how Rubinstein is able to perfectly and naturally balance his phrasings and rubatos without resorting to cheap sentimentality. Unfortunately, its the scherzi that Rubinstein goes downhill. To me, this rendition sounds much too bland and labored. In addition, the third and fourth scherzo has lost much of the impetuosity from his earlier recordings. I know for certain that he was holding back, considering his 1964 chopin recital was much more volatile and exciting than this lethargic recording. If you really want definitive scherzi's, try Richters or Yundi Li's recordings. For the Ballades, try Moravec's or Zimerman's. And by the way, RCA's sonics don't sound that great compared to the Digital CD's of today. Get the improved (and cheaper) SACD version.
10 stars !.......2005-12-25
Chopin's Ballades, Scherzoes and 19 Nocturnes are the pinnacle of classical piano. Rubinstein Collection Vol. 45 and 49 are the reference recordings for these pieces. His interpretation of Ballades is muscular. In contrast, he is as soft as feather in the dreamy Nocturnes.

Excellent performances, both audio and video.......2007-01-09
I was delighted with this Dual Disc. Performances are excellent, both audio and video. Recording quality is very good.
I must report some problems with CD side (cracks) on older CD player.
Great music, lousy format!.......2007-01-03
I love the music, but was VERY unhappy to be unable to play this CD on my computer. The DVD side works okay, but I can't load this to itunes on my macintosh. And I can't load the DVD to my computer and store this disk at home. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the plain vanilla CD!
