Hans Zimmer, trying to avoid war-movie clichés, accompanies the dramatized carnage at Guadalcanal with a weepy and wistful score. Like the Terrence Malick film, the music, with its sad violins and underscored orchestra, invokes a war that is more introspective, a fitting backdrop to the often purple poeticisms in the voice-over narrations. Zimmer provides occasional adaptations to the American folk hymn "Christian Race," but his overall effect is much more otherworldly. Instead of the earthier martial themes associated with warlords or heroes, this is the soundtrack to a melancholy Valhalla, a story seemingly told by battlefield casualties who are already angels. Less predictable is a brief closing track (written by Francesco Lupica) strangely titled "Sit Back & Relax" that sends out a surreal "cosmic beam." --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-04-29

This is an incredibly beautiful, haunting and intense soundtrack. It evokes the strong emotions of the film but stands on its own as an absolute work of art. It will remain one of the great compositions of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the heart of Zimmer's masterpiece.......2006-02-09

No main themes. Williams pulled it off in Saving Private Ryan now Zimmer pulls it off with The Thin Red Line.

"The Coral Atoll" begins with low rumbles becoming ever louder before being joined by a loud French horn blast. Once the horn fades away the music becomes soft and mellow and remains so for the next 7+ minutes.

"The Lagoon" is more of atmospheric music than much else. A distant male chant and bell clang during the beginning of the track. The track ends with underscore before fading off to a ticking clock leading up to . . .

"Journey to the Line" the most emotional and powerful score cue Zimmer has ever composed. The ticking clock is joined by low strings and plays in loops increasing in tension for the next four minutes then climaxing to synthesized brass blasts. After the horns fade off the song continues on high strings and carries on for the duration of the track. This song alone is worth the album price.

The rest of the album is airy with rolling strings and some tense moments with brass sections like "Stone in My Heart" and "The Village".

Overall, this is Zimmer's best work because the orchestra, not the synths, carries the score. Can't go wrong with this purchase, unless you wanted an action score because this is a dramatic score.

5 out of 5 stars Zimmers Best!.......2005-09-13

This haunting score is so peaceful and brings balence to a movie filled with the horrors of war. Favorite Tracks are 3 and 10. Worth Buying.

5 out of 5 stars best film music I ever bought.......2005-05-20

I bought this cd as soon as I had seen the film in Germany.

I heard it on a sailboat, lying flat on my back, just enjoying the music.

I have used it ever since as background music whenever I am driving my car. It is so relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks I know........2005-04-11

If you listen to this music - composed by Hans Zimmer - you notice that it's nothing like the usual war-movie sounds (a lot of brass, pounding drums, etc.).Instead it's music that makes you dream away and it takes you to beautiful and peaceful places where you have never been before. The music is quiet with a simple but beautiful melody, sensitive and sometimes a little sad but never sentimental. This sadness and the fact that on two or three occasions you hear eerie voices and sounds, reminds you that there is a war going on. It's a soundtrack you can listen to without having seen the movie

4 out of 5 stars Remember great soundtracks?.......2006-08-06

Seems like for the better part of the 1990s soundtracks were "the" in thing in music.

This was another one.

If you like any of the following in a great soundtrack, cop this one:
1) Music put on the LP that you actually recognize from the original motion picture.
2) A hot mix of contemporary, popular artists consistent with the time of the movie's release.
3) A nice number of contributions from budding, unhyped new artists that actually help make the soundtrack complete.
4) An overall musical selection that fits the tone of the movie.

Thin Line was a classic movie released my freshman year of college (1996) and every time I listen to this soundtrack it takes me back to that time.

That's a signature of great music, period.

Songs to check for on this soundtrack:

--Tevin Campbell's cover of Stevie Wonder's timeless love jam "Knocks Me Off My Feet"

--H-Town's soulful remake of the title track

--"Damned If I Do (Damned if I Don't)" by Something for the People

--"Just Beware of My Crew" by LBC which captures that '90s West Coast sound

--R. Kelly's "Freak Tonight"

And of course D'Angelo's masterpiece "Brown Sugar" (you already know!)

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Listening.......2006-01-17

I had to step and put my 5 in here, after seeing overall the Soundtrack received 3 stars. This is an EXECELLENT soundtrack with a variety of different types of songs. It has R&b, Hip hop, rap, smooth soul... I mean it's very well produced. My fav song is Tevin Campbells' "Knocks Me Off My Feat" (a beautifully intimate song about love and the imagination of love) and "Lets Stay Together" by Eric Benet' but the entire cd is great and I don't see how it could hve been any better. This is most definitely a classic! It still in heavy rotation with me.

4 out of 5 stars Love It Or Hate It.......2005-05-24

This soundrack from 1996 has some to love and some to hate. L.B.C. Crew started the soundtrack off well with the Zapp sample "Beware Of My Crew". Somethin' For The People came with a smooth track on relationships featuring Adina Howard to add to the effects of it. "Freak Tonight", a mid-tempo, bounce by R. Kelly was slept on as it may very well be the reason to purchase A Thin Line Between Love & Hate. The laid back gangsta groove by Soopafly tells us with a more lyrical, gangster twist of hardness. Ganjah K's "Love Got My Mind Trippin'" is okay at best, but nice to listen to. The best rap song on here is by the underdog Dru Down as he shows us he's a "Playa Fo Real". Roger Troutman brought another classic with the slow, seductive and nasty "Chocolate City". Eric Benet and Sandra St. Victor both delivered love tunes to make it altogether worthy. Don't be dissappointed you don't have to buy this new! But there's something on here you need to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Nice album.......2004-09-23

Honestly I only like maybe 5 tracks on this album. The opening song is tight, there is a lil variation between it and the version in the film. Come Over by Sandra St. Victor is hands down the best song on the album. My favorites: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10, 11, 13-15. Tevin Campbell's song is alright.

Okay, so maybe I like more than 5 tracks! I only got the album for the first song, but it really surprised me and I'm glad to add it to my collection.

2 out of 5 stars it's ok at best.......2003-10-06

the only reason why I was interested in this soundtrack was because of R.Kelly's "Freak Tonight" that Sampled Mtume's "Juicy Fruit".it works pretty good for the track.but for the most part this SOundtrack is pretty forgettable just like the film.

Composer/former Buggles keyboardist Hans Zimmer helped pioneer the fusion of traditional orchestral music with synthesized sounds that both seamlessly mock and supplement the traditionally acoustic. What listeners sometimes mistake for a symphony orchestra in full voice is often but shrewdly manipulated digital samples. Thus, this concert performance (recorded at the 2000 Flanders Film Festival) adds a welcome, truly organic dimension to the best of Zimmer's canon. The composer is featured as a performer (with Dirk Brosse conducting the fine efforts of the VRO Flemish Radio Orchestra), as are many of his frequent collaborators; Lisa Gerrard adds her distinctive vocals to the included Gladiator excerpts, while guitarists Pete Haycock and Heitor Pereira add their familiar flourishes to cues from Thelma and Louise and Mission: Impossible 2, respectively. Reworked music from The Lion King and The Power of One supplement the already familiar, but it's Zimmer's haunting, emotionally compelling "Journey to the Line" (from The Thin Red Line score) that is the collection's unlikely high point. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Wing of a Film.......2005-02-14

This is one of my favorite CD's. My car was broken into and my CD holder taken from the visor. This CD is the first one I replaced. If you like movie music, this is the CD for you. From the drama and power of "Gladiator" to the African plain of "The Lion King", Hans Zimmer's music moves the heart. The added bonus of vocals from Lisa Gerrard (his collaborator on the "Gladiator" score) only make this more special.

4 out of 5 stars unique live zimmer compilation.......2004-10-01

This compilation is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to sample some of Zimmer's signature compositions. If anything, it has more of a 'Zimmer and friends jam session' vibe than a true classical concert, but it still works rather well on CD.

The live versions of more 'serious' pieces such as "Am I Not Merciful" and "Journey To The Line" unfortunately don't quite live up to the soul-stirring intensity and clarity of the album versions, however they are still worth listening to if you are a Zimmer enthusiast.

It's the more lively pieces, like "Driving", "Thunderbird" and the hard-to-find "Rain Man Main Theme" which are the standout tracks, and full credit must go to the talented Pete Haycock and Heitor Pereira for their blistering live performances on guitar, which are full of energy and passion.

Indeed, perhaps the most unexpected treat on the CD is the version of MI:2's "Nyah and Ethan", which is a truly stunning arrangement of this spanish-influenced piece. The presence of extra stringed instruments which rise and swell with the melody gives this piece a much fuller, richer and epic feel.

Lebo M performs nicely on 'Lea Halalela', less memorably on 'Busa'; Lisa Gerrard gives an slower, carefully articulated vocal performance on 'Now We Are Free'; and the hard-to-find 'True Romance' theme rounds out the album.

All in all, a neat little album that's worth getting for Zimmer novices and fans alike.

4 out of 5 stars Zimmer Zimmer.......2004-07-02

Im george zimmer, no relation. this cd is good quality service, and a good price. if i had a warehouse, i'd fill it with his music. he should be president.

3 out of 5 stars Not All You Could Hope For.......2004-02-29

If you're looking for a collection of Zimmer's work all in one place this is it. But that's all. These are not the best versions of his work you'll find and if you've grown to love some of his music from movie soundtrack CDs, you'll be disappointed. This is LIVE meaning each piece has several seconds of applause at the end. The arrangements are for orchestra so some of the studio techniques which give the music a kick are missing.

For some people, once they're used to one version of a song, variations will never do. If that's you don't waste time on this CD. I'm not such a person yet these live recordings left me cold.

The music for Rainman is a good case in point. I like that the arrangement, unlike the soundtrack CD, is a full 3 minutes of the piece (the soundtrack was split into two shorter pieces) but the music simply doesn't transport me the way the original did. There's less emotion.

If you're into Hans then this is still a must have but is not as satisfying as, say, a compilation of the original works.

4 out of 5 stars MOVING.......2002-12-28

This CD doesn't grab you right away. But after a few times it's hard not listen to it. Very moving CD.

Wonderfull CD! I would like to see more of this kind of music at the stores! Is one of the best album I've bought in my life!
It's rare, it's beautifull, it's a very special kind of music.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-03-17

Its very good music. The only thing its missing is a lyric sheet or english translations.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Information.......2005-09-07

This recording has already been reviewed with regard to quality, so I thought I'd skip what we all know (that this music is fantastic) and give a few more practical bits of info.
First of all, if you have the DVD of The Thin Red Line, the chants that come in the extras are all present on this disc. If that's all you want and you can put up with having to use your DVD player to listen, then there's no real reason to buy this album. However, the album contains twice as much material, all of it just as good. Don't think that if you buy this album you won't be getting your money's worth, even if you already have the DVD.
Secondly, the sound quality of the recording is for the most part excellent, especially when one considers that the whole album was recorded "on location" so to speak. That said, there are a few moments where the high end seems to get lost somewhere, and the occasional cough or ambient noise. If this bothers you, then be warned. It really shouldn't.
Thirdly, in response to another review, the language they are speaking (although sometimes they speak English and the accent makes it hard to tell) is Tok Pisin, or Melanesian Pigin. I won't bore you with the details, but the short version is that Tok Pisin is actually a full-fledged language, not just a pigin, dialects of which are spoken throughout the area. A minor bit of trivia: "Jisas, masta mi save" doesn't have anything to do with being saved; "save" (pronounced "sah-vay") means "to know," from whence comes "savvy" as in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Lastly, some reviews might give one the impression that this album has an overwhelming religious presence, or that it is "Christian," or some such. I won't lie; I would say 75% of the songs have the word Jesus or God somewhere in them. All I can tell you is to find some way to listen to some of them and see for yourself whether or not one has to be religious in order to appreciate the music. I would say no, others might disagree.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Three times the magic!.......2006-03-31

Their third full length CD is even better then the previous two! I first heard Guano Apes about 6 years ago when my brother turned me on the the track "Open Your Eye's". I quickly bought the debut CD "Proud Like A God" and was hooked. GA posses a raw power and emotion missing in so many American bands today. "Walking On A Thin Line" combines the best of both power and emotion delivering memorable tunes that you just can't help but listen to over and over! Every track rocks! This album has more of a heavy melodic feel to it with less of the funk rock vibe that struck gold on the first album. They've grown as a band and as musicians and should be stars here in the states. We're force fed garbage on the airwaves by the radio stations who are in the back pockets of the record companies. No wonder downloading music is so big! GA are at the top of my play list toppling most of our home grown bands easily. Buy this and the other two Guano Apes CD's if you don't already have them...you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD........2005-05-30

I have nine Guano Apes CD's. The Planet Of The Apes has the cream of the crop, which is where I would point ANY first time buyer of the apes. If you already know & like the apes, BUY "Walking On Thin Line", simple as that. I have an unusually wide spectrum of musical interest. I LOVE "Quality" wherever it may be found. My collection includes, Tapping The Vein, Die Happy & Lacuna Coil. I even like The Lords Of Acid once in awhile. As of late, Whenever I feel the need for un-leashed raw female power & expression, I reach for "Planet Of The Apes", it Frosts My Cake. Expand to other Guano Apes CDs, like this one, AFTER you've experienced them. Breathe in the aroma, kick the turds around awhile, get to know Land Of The Apes, first. There are GOOD tunes on Walking On Thin Line not found on the best of CD.

5 out of 5 stars GUANO APES ARE AMAZING.......2005-04-22

I'd just like to say I agree with everything the last reviewer said. Guano Apes are bloody brilliant and this album is by far their best. Sandra has the most amazing and powerful voice I have seriously ever heard, she can sing softly and she can scream the lyrics beautifully. Guano Apes are really unique.
Another good thing about this CD is that for every CD I own I will tend to always skip over songs I don't like .. but in this album there is no song I dislike. They are all truly amazing songs ..
Guano Apes definitely don't get enough recognition in countries other than their own, Germany.
Guano Apes, along with Incubus, are my favourite band!!!
There is absolutely no way you can regret buying this album if you are into rock music ..

5 out of 5 stars Guano ROCKS the Thin Line....AMAZING!.......2004-08-21

Absolutely one of the finest albums I've heard this year. Extraordinary production, innovative songwriting, with imaginative and creative vocals. This CD just plain rocks the world! Some of the best guitar production I've ever heard. They have achieved a level of maturity. Compared to the raw approach displayed in there previous efforts Walking the Thin Line propels you into another demension. The sweetest tasting ear candy, satisfying your every need, so addictive you'll never want to stop listening. The raw power that is Guano Apes with added layers of rhythmic textures, a touch of class, a discovery that maintains its integrity being centered in the alternative rock genre.

My only complaint about this CD is that you can't hear it played on any radio however everyone I've turned on to this CD is completely amazed at how strong this band is.

BUY THIS CD and keep hammering you local stations to play it. It's the BEST CD EVER!

5 out of 5 stars More focused, more mature, classic Guano Apes (finally!).......2004-05-14

This album is by far the best work Guano Apes have put out. I own both their previous albums, but in spite of moments of brilliance (including their debut single, "Open Your Eyes", neither of them really succeeded in channelling the obvious energy of the group consistently into songs that clicked. Walking on a Thin Line finally delivers, lining up song after song of classic Guano Apes. This album is a bit lighter on the manic joke songs than the previous albums, which is probably a good thing. While they have done decent light-hearted songs as B-sides ("Candy Love") and collaborations ("Kumba Yo") in the past, the darker, more sincere material is what Guano Apes do best. Songs like "Quietly", "Storm", and "Kiss the Dawn" on this album are especially successful in this vein. This album single-handedly puts Guano Apes in the ranks of the best rock bands of the world at the moment.

4 out of 5 stars No, I haven't forgotten them while they're gone.......2003-12-13

Bryan Adams, Loverboy, and Rush may have been the big Canadian power rockers in the 1980's. Also in that decade, was a pop/light rock group who fared well with a few hits, primarily from this album. The name Glass Tiger fits well, as they never posed too much of a threat to the aforementioned bands, but their material wasn't too shabby. In fact I enjoyed their second and third singles quite a bit when they were on heavy rotation on MTV.

The title track and first single is a tribute to the fighting men of Canada. The anthemic drums and keyboards make a martial rhythm that makes a pretty good beat.

The second single, an upbeat pop number incorporating a horn section throughout, was a big hit here in the US as well as Canada. And after Frew sings the chorus, a familiar scratchy voice can be heard singing from the second time the chorus is sung, "my heart would break" or "for heaven's sake." Hint: he thinks the summer of 69 was the best days of his life.

"Vanishing Tribe" sports the poppy keyboards about how the older generation weep at the loss of their culture while the younger generation sing of modernity. Frew sings from the point of an observer of this catastrophe. "I've watched the sky shed tears till rivers overlow/I feel the mountains move/I'm watching nature die."

The nostalgic sadness of "Looking At A Picture" from another time, "of childhood days and summer nights" has the musical style of a Journey song. Steve Perry wouldn't be out of place singing this.

"Ecstasy" features synths with a sparkling effect and tells of the folly of being happy living in the past via staring at a mirror. Staring at the mirror and being captivated by its charms is seen as folly, but in examining one's reflection, one can also see how one's aged.

The third single was the mid-paced "Someday," which has a classic 80's bouncy-bass synths and a backbeat, and is an unhappy breakup song about the untruths told to protect one's ego. I get kind of pensive whenever I hear the chorus, "Someday you'll be shedding your tears/to cry over me/someday, I'll be losing this fear." Like "Don't Forget Me," this was co-written by Jim Vallance, Bryan Adam's songwriting partner, who also produced the whole album.

Then, the fourth single, "I Will Be There", sporting a hard guitar and bubbly high-pitched keyboards. Bryan Adams sings a line or two here as he did in the second single. This could've done better on the singles chart.

"You're What I Look For" seems like a nice affirmative love song, sounding a bit like the Outfield, but then there's the bridge, which consists of the single line, "Now it's over." Awww!

Glass Tiger gets some support from pro musicians. Apart from Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, Dalbello, who would work with Heart on their Desire Walks On album, helps out with backing vocals. And singer Alan Frew's singing sometimes reminds me a bit of Simon LeBon. Not a bad album, especially with the singles, for which reason, I haven't forgotten them when they're gone.

5 out of 5 stars A Sparkling Debut!.......2002-12-08

Glass Tiger's impressive debut earned them a Grammy nomination and two top-ten hits in the U.S. From the opening crash of the drum, "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" grabs our attention with classic upbeat pop, while the warm appeal of Alan Frew's voice tugs at your heartstrings in the unique mid-tempo ballad "Someday." But there is much more to this album than the familiar hits. The strength of the songs and overall performance shines through the slick production and Frew easily stays on top of it all--his personality gives the album character. For me, his voice is the main attraction--full and resonant in the lower range, while higher up it develops a bright, clear edge (to which Bryan Adams' raspy "guest star" backups are an interesting counterpoint). "I Will Be There" ends on a great "power" note, but there is no arrogance--just a pure, youthful, triumphant quality also present in "Ecstasy." But lungpower and control are only part of the package--there is often a charming vulnerability in his voice (reminiscent of a young McCartney) that is equally compelling. The atmospheric title track shows off a more rugged side--his full-bodied rolling growl in the battle cries really sets the scene. Contrast that with his light falsetto in the lovely intervals he sings in the fade-out of "Ancient Evenings." His beguiling blend of strength and sensitivity fully supported by a tight and talented band makes for a rich and varied listening experience. We can thank our neighbors to the north for exporting this refreshing taste of 80's music at its best. Kelly G. Smith

5 out of 5 stars What A Great Sound From The 80's!..........2002-10-16

This is a tough review to write considering how many wonderful memories the band Glass Tiger brings back to me. I remember hearing them for the first time in early September of 1986, with the hit "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone". It reminds me of going to a pep rally at the football field across town. I got into my little 85' Dodge Ram pickup and turned on the radio and that song was playing. I thought that was my favorite Glass Tiger song until around November or December of 86' rolled around and I heard the powerfull "Someday" coming out of the speakers. I even called my best friend to ask him who sang that song. Of course he said "Glass Tiger". I couldn't believe it was the same band. What a great cold weather song. Now when I hear that music I think of the late fall and early winter of 86' and my high school sweetheart. We used to listen to that song in my truck every time I would go pick her up for a date. Anyway, if you love great pop music from the mid-80's then you'll love this cd! Buy it! I'm going too...

5 out of 5 stars Thin Line Turns A 4 Star Album Into a 5 Star.......2006-05-27

I love Thin Line!!!. I don't know why it's only a limited bonus track when it should have been on the wide release cd and even a single. It probably would have received a warmer reception than Not Ready To Make Nice. Although a great cd, Taking The Long Way is mostly a moody, slow paced cd. Thin Line is a fast song that lightens the mood but still has the same tone and message of the cd.

4 out of 5 stars Key word: narrative first, music second.......2004-12-09

I must admit when I first purchased this many years ago I was expecting solely Glass' music. I quickly found out there was mostly dialogue from the film with the music as a background (like the film obviously). I wasn't pleased because in the film you get the music as background and I was hoping to get the music as the main focus. However, it has grown on me and like the film, the dialogue, music, and sound effects blend so well that it works! I would urge people to see the film as well but regardless, listening to the dialogue and music is captivating even without the visuals. Look to other Glass titles if you want only music but if a unique and captivating blend of spoken word, storytelling AND Glass music appeals to you, this is good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars "The kid scares me...".......2003-11-14

Be aware that this is not your typical soundtrack album, and those looking for Phillip Glass' isolated score will not find it here.

Rather, this is 30+ track disc that plays like an encapsulated version of the film for your ears. Nearly every single track has dialogue and sound effects from the film, with Glass' subtle, minimalistic, menacing and hopeful music all around.

The Thin Blue Line is far from your typical documentary, and the dramatization of some events and the use of music throughout are part of what separates it from the rest of the pack. The film is the true story of the murder of a Dallas police officer in 1976 and the rapid railroading of a 28 year-old drifter named Randall Adams through the court and onto Death Row.

The film helped overturn Adams' conviction in the late 1980s. The other main player in the case, lifelong criminal David Harris (just 16 at the time of the shooting) is interviewed throughout, and his chilling statements at the end were disturbing at the time the film appeared (since the 'truth' is finally revealed). Today Adams is free and Harris sits on Death Row for crimes other than those depicted in The Thin Blue Line.

You can actually listen to this whole disc without having seen the film, but you would be doing yourself a severe injustice. When you put faces to voices and see the reenactments and get a sense of the situation Adams was in, the whole picture opens up.

Unless you really hate soundtracks with heavy dialogue and sound bites from the film, this is a highly recommended disc for Glass fans and fans of the great film.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, but stop yakking!.......1999-09-12

This is the only Glass CD I have that I don't listen to on a regular basis. This is the worst possible way to make a soundtrack album. The film is brilliant, the music is brilliant, but the album is like someone shortened the film down and laid down the entire audio track. I hate soundtracks like this and only give it as many stars as I do because of how much I like the music and film. Only the opening titlte is only music, and some tracks have no music at all. If this were reissued without the dialogue and sound FX, I would but it in a heartbeat and sell this one off. Morris's non-fiction films are too stylish to want to hear the dialogue without the visuals, and Glass's music is too good not to be able to hear it apart from the rest of the audio track. If the spoken word were done poetically like in _Einstein on the Beach_ or _Hydrogen Jukebox_, I would recommend it, but because it isn't, I can't.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and engrossing mix of music and spoken word........1999-06-03

Mere words, like the unsupported testimony that convicted Randall Adams, are the focus of this soundtrack, but with a spare, understated score by Philip Glass lending a sense of gravity to the dialogue taken from the film. The result is that each remark, however insignificant on the surface, is made profound and meaningful. Listening to this work is like listening to an old radio drama, but without the artifice of a narrator telling us what to think. It is utterly compelling and truly demonstrates the power of the spoken word and the power of music.

3 out of 5 stars dialogue.......1999-03-02

Just so you know: This CD consists almost entirely of dialogue from the movie, with Philip Glass's music in the background. If you don't go for that sort of thing, then don't buy it. For true Glass fans, though, it's worth it.

Album Description

It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

1 out of 5 stars a huge letdown..........2005-12-21

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

1 out of 5 stars The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
recycling Glass.

1 out of 5 stars Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

3 out of 5 stars Sound Effects.......2005-09-24

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

4 out of 5 stars MISSING CLASSICS !.......2006-07-27

Excuse me, not only is "Some Guys Have All The Luck" missing, the most beautiful of all their songs missing is, "Once In A Lifetime Thing", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", and "I've Been Through This Before", one of their most powerful ballads. They were all recorded on the Atco label. If they were all included on this cd, this would be one grand cd. Why on earth the record company did not put them on this cd, who knows? I hope some day, they soon will be !! J.H.

3 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Cuts Is Nowhere To Be Found.......2006-07-17

There was a lot happening with 70s Soul, and one of the bright stars were The Persuaders. I loved "A Thin Line Between Love And Hate". No truer words were ever written in a ballad.

At the same time I cannot be but disappointed, because "Some Guys Have All The Luck" is missing in action. Why?

All the remakes since, fail to measure up. Help!

Other wise I would have given this release 4.5 stars, but for that one glaring flaw.

4 out of 5 stars Great but missing something.......2005-12-06

Most people remember the Persuaders as that group that did Thin Line Between Love And Hate. Awesome early-70s soul music there, like most of the rest of this album. But who decided to leave "Some Guys Have All The Luck" out of this collection? That might have been their next-most-popular song, and judging by the cover version Rod Stewart did of it, maybe their next most-well-known. It's a very good collection representing their soul sound, but leaving out SGHATL makes anyone who buys this collection just this side of lucky.

Unfortunately Tommy Hill passed, but The Persuaders legend can be seen on their official website; www.thepersuadersonline.com with the Living Legend/singer/song writer/producer/ Richard Poindexter, Alexander Brown, David Turner, and Carlos Flores (replacing Tommy Hill)..
