Here's a shocker--a good, maybe even great, album from a man whose solo efforts 'til now have been formulaic. With the unheralded Gerald McMahon subbing for Townshend as music director, Daltry invests "Before My Time Is Up" with genuine passion, wails soulfully on "You Can't Call It Love" and crafts a CSNY-style hum-along classic in "Days of Light." Daltrey Amidst A Slick Backing: Not bad at all.......2006-11-14

This is from '92, and it shows on the production. The drums are very tight and flawless, the guitar is crisp and on-point and there is nothing sloppy in this albums execution. The music is presented in a way that's almost too perfect and they're quite obviously the work of trusty studio men. Roger's vocals, however, are spot-on fantastic. The man has got a tenacity in his throat that shines whenever his rock & roll roar comes out. The combination between the early 90s rock sheen and Daltrey's timeless voice comes out quite well, though. It's certainly better than I expected. A few less-amphetamined numbers can slow down the momentum, but great material abounds on the CD.

Hightlighs include: "Times Changed," "Who's Gonna Walk on Water," "Perfect World" and "Before My Time is Up."

I'd suggest that if you like The Who and don't mind slick-overproduction, you should grab this great album immediately; you won't regret it at all.

Better than His Work With the Who!!.......2004-06-09

This is Roger's finest album, a showcase for the melding of Who vocals and LA Hair-Band rock stylings. Whoever thought this up is a genius!! Imagine Appetite for Destruction, but with Roger's vocals. Pure gold.

Great Great Album.......2001-11-11

This is simply maybe the second best of Roger Daltrey s' solo albums of new material (for me his best is "Under a Ragin Moon).
It contains songs co-written by Roger and especially the last one "Unforgetable Opera" , seems not only written with the The Who or the Rock opera TOMMY in mind, but also seems to be addresed to Pete Townshend
"Take the key in your hands, its time to walk a naked stage of glass from hot sands, where a sound within your heart will rage, and it rocks in the head moving ever on, life is an unforgettable opera"...
It is simply his best song ever with music and words by Roger Daltrey and former Joan Jetts guitarrists Gerard McMahon who also did a great production job. There are various great songs on this cd apart from Unforgetable Opera: Willow, Who s gonna walk on water, Before my time is Up and love is.
Just get this cd and also his great live recording "A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who".
Get it. Maybe then record companies will release a couple on "unrelease" albums he recorded in 1977 and 79 and in the 80s.

Nearly four stars.......1998-11-23

I hated this album after first listening to it. It sat on my shelf literally for years, unplayed. I mocked it. Then for some reason I played it again and guess what? It's good. It would be four stars, but I still expect so much from Roger that he is still rated on a higher level.Rocks in the Head isn't like his very enjoyable first solo album, but thankfully it isn't like his Brian Adams fixation albums either. It is a good gender crossing AOR album that just needs a listener with an open mind. Recently, Roger Daltrey had made that tough, but this album does deliver, both in craft and with quality songs.

Who Needs the Who!!.......1998-11-10

"Mirror Mirror" is a classic. An extremely romantic song. One of the most romantic song ever in fact. Just like "Something". "Mirror Mirror", "Can't Call It Love", "Love Is", and "Perfect World" can all be Who songs. "Days of Light', "Time's Changed", and "Before My Time Is Up", can also be Who songs. Why "Who's Gonna Walk On Water" was released as a single is besides me. Roger shows that it doesn't matter who wrote it, it's who sings it. He's never sounded better. A must for Who fans.

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Daltrey - Rock Dinosaur God.......2002-02-27

I discovered this little known gem of an album while driving across the continental USA. Buying it on tape dollars and expecting little from my outlay I was stunned as I listened to an album of rare beauty and inventiveness - perhaps the best I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.
From the first song, "Walk on water" (where Daltrey invites the listener to join him and Jesus on the lake of his Tunbridge Wells trout farm), to the last, "Unforgettable Opera", Daltrey takes us on a magnificent journey through his rock filled brain!

Pete Townshend eat your heart out!
