Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band's first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, "the best thing that we've ever done . There's this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records." Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off.Customer Reviews:

Snow..the hit from the soundtrack.......2007-07-11
For the past two days I've been listening to one song, Snow, over and over. The cool thing is with iTunes repeat, it's the kind of song that just undulates into highs and lows, mellow and rapping and metal and back to mellow; like it never ends (and by the way, I DON'T do drugs anymore. Just want to clarify).
This is what the Chili Peppers represent to me. They have that definite sound that's been imitated ad-infinitum. But they started that sound (at least for white people) and added the heavy guitars to rapping found only in Run DMC's second hit, Rock Box back in the early 80s. Punk? Yeah. Well, that's just part of their story. Much more multicultural than that.
But what I want to say is, you know how there's that song that represents a certain time in your life? I call them life soundtrack songs. They're powerful and give you goose bumps, and you remember that time when you were, say, just walking down the street, and this beautiful serene rhythm took over from hearing that one song. Two years from now I'll try to recapiture this song's impact, but it will be second hand by then.
So, thank you Chili Peppers, for coming up with what I see as tPart II of that beautiful/desperate epic of pain and resurrection; Under the Bridge. That's when I knew you guys were incredible, and that you'd been there.
You know.
And that it made you better in the long run.

Some good stuff, missing lots, HORRID sound quality.......2007-07-05
However, the sound quality is as bad as it gets. It's easily the loudest album I own, and anything that was the chili peppers is flattened out as much as possible. Give It Away is a far, far cry from the original release quality.
Do yourself a favor, since RHCP have only released a few albums in the past 15 years, pick those up individually (you'll get 90% of this Greatest Of by picking up their last 3 releases). Then track down the ORIGINAL ISSUES of RHCP's early stuff, they used to care about sound quality and had some really great stuff back in the day. Just don't get fooled by the "Remastered" editions, they will have hacked sound quality just so it can sound as loud as modern releases.

Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so One Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, "Around the World," swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some unexpected twists. Ten years ago, Anthony Kiedis and company wouldn't have been comfortable doing revamped new wave ("Parallel Universe") or unpretentious ballads (the acoustic "Road Trippin'"), but such material fits Californication's extra-wide canvas. Except for a few meandering numbers that could have been excised, the Red Hot Chili Peppers succeed and regain their footing on the mountain of adrenalized funk. --Jason JosephesCustomer Reviews:

With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

ALL YOU NEED.......2007-07-15
hold up.......2007-07-13
And I can't believe that you even have audacity to bring up lyrics. First of all, most of the songs are funk rock, Thusly, it's party music: i.e. Sir Psycho Sexy, which is brilliant in its own way. Secondly, the songs that do call for different lyrical composition come through in every which way. Are you seriosuly trying to tell me that 311 has a song more meaningful than "Power of Equality?" Do you even listen to the lyrics? I think not.
Lyrical abilities aside, you must realize that you are basically taking Chad Smith, and extremely respected rock drummer, John Frusciante, hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and Flea, (debatably)THE greatest rock bassist of all time, and saying that what many people believe is their greatest piece of work in BSSM, is garbage. I just hope you didn't listen one time and write that bull****. If so, your review is all the more less credible because you fail to realize one of the most key compenents to good music; the fact that it grows on you and it takes more than one listen. You just can't absorb it all in one take.
I have nothing against 311, they're not a bad band. But it's hard to give you any respect when you rip a band like Nirvana at the end of your review. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but you have to see that you are contradicting yourself when millions of people love BSSM and Nevermind and you just shut that down like you are some kind of all knowing god.
Anyways, just to add some of my own opinion, this is my favorite album of all time and will always be. I feel like although the chili peppers have moved on and continue to make world class music they will never top what they did in 1991. Just too much emotion, attitude and musical ability when into that album. They went into it with something to prove and just ripped it up. I think Stadium Arcadium is definitely a step down for them. It's a great record but it lacks some of the artistic maerit that they had in their last four albums (minus OHM).
Way overrated.......2007-06-24
The Peppers have their own sound, but it's too bad they suck. THe band (besides Anthony) are very talented, but the playing just don't go together very well. I like 311 better because they play funk better, they don't seem to try to force everything, everything just goes together so well, their synergy is just great.
Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer because they just don't seem to fit together. No doubt the whole band is very talented, but they go together, they just dont' seem to blend as well. Anthony is a cheesy vocalist. The lyrics on here are mostly on the same topic, sex and drugs, which gets old after a while. He can't sing either. His later lyrics cleary were a step up from the pointless lyrics he does during this time.
Basically, I dont like their sound, although the bass is something to check out. It's not worth it to me, I find nothing special about this band, although I give them points for talent and originality.
4.5/10
UPDATE: HAHAHA!!!!!!
The retard who replied, the way you judge people on a silly band shows how stupid you are. Think about that one for a second. I think 311 is great, and I am not going to say what I think, the last thing I want to do is make a ________ reply like you did, and become everything I hate, people who spend their time insulting because they upset you and your precious RHCP (I'm only writing this to embaress you).
IF I was somebody who you met on the street and we had a converstation, and I said the same, you would actually walk away on one silly opinion?
Call them ignorant, bash them, explode and blatantly insult somebody. Well, you could say that it's just the internet, but some people treat internet insults the same way. YOu don't have feelings anyway (hey I sound just like you!)
I'm not mad that you bashed 311, I don't get mad about a silly musical opinion. It's your opinion. I don't call you ignorant over one band opinion, because I actually think that you could be a person with a good mind, that's smart. Music is music. How many ignorant people can listen to Classical music, millions of different rock, jazz, blues, world music, electronic, and more? Oh well, your a closeminded @$$hole (let's make a retarded insult just to get through the night! *sarcasm*).
Excuse me while I listen Wagner. I'll find layers and depth of music that you never will.
Your the ignorant one (here I go again! *sarcasm*).

When the Red Hot Chili Peppers first appeared smeared in neon body paint with socks dangling precariously from their wieners, even the most faithful funk-metal convert couldn't have conceived they would be around some 20 years later, carrying on in much the same fashion. Despite a long history of tragedies and personnel upheavals, the California quartet's eighth album is mostly business as usual--and business, as usual, is quite good. The title track, "By the Way," is a powerful, bruised piece of slap-bass and intermediary white-boy rapping. "Universally Speaking" pays sweaty, soulful tribute to singer Anthony Kiedis's hometown of Detroit. And "Lemon Trees on Mercury" sounds eerily like it could have been lifted from 1984's Freaky Styley. The band's reliable eclectic side, meanwhile, surfaces on the Latin-flavored "Cabron" and moody "Venice Queen." But the biggest surprise is "Tear," a masterful homage to the Beach Boys that suggests the Chili Peppers' perpetual state of arrested development may someday lift. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description

I simply wasn't impressed. Maybe I got a little spoiled from Californication, but bottom line is that all these other albums had some ballads, alotta funk, and some hard rock. This album is missing a couple key ingredients from RHCP. They simply aren't hard enough, and should have a warning label in that regard.
all that said, i'll note some songs that were good.
-By the Way. Way to go Flea! You made this song what it is.
-Dosed.
-Zephyr Song. You can feel it, lyrically and spiritually.
-Can't Stop. Good jams.
-On Mercury. There's those old roots showing again.
For most bands today, this would be a breakout album. Not for Red Hot, though. For the Peppers, this is sub-par.
By The Way, This Is Amazing.......2007-02-15
It begins with "By the Way", one of the only numbers on the entire album which have preserved the once quintessential funk and rap-driven verses. It is vastly discrepant to those of the other recordings found on the album, and is, thus, misleading. The intricate song structure evolves from mellow, harmonious and humble beginnings to a brazen verse and impeccably bridges into a melodic chorus. "Universally Speaking" follows. It's instantly apparent that this song has very few things relative to that of it's predecessor. The song has a sort of Doo-whop feeling as it bridges expressively from the verse into a 60's-type chorus.
"This Is the Place" has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. It begins with a modest base line (which is played throughout the entire song), and gives way to Chad's lustrous drum beat and Anthony's masterful lyrics; it contains some of the best song-writing I have ever seen, though one never knows what he is actually alluding to. John comes in with a seemingly invisible guitar segment; all until the chorus, when it brings through stunning life altering sounds. The most notable segment is the conclusion, when Kiedis sing unwaveringly, and John pounds furiously on his guitar. "Dosed" follows, which is elegant, wispy, and, for some reason, makes me feel as if I were in an Arctic blast. Four guitar lines run luxuriantly through the song.
"Don't Forget Me" has the most intricate and zealous guitar-playing I have ever heard. Like "This Is the Place", the exact same base-line is played perpetually until the conclusion. Anthony's haunting and ubiquitous voice resonates in your mind, as John picks masterfully at his guitar. Following the first and second choruses, astonishingly intricate solos are given by Frusciante. Each one is an ecstasy of euphoric delirium, executed with impeccable perfection. "The Zephyr Song" comes next, and seems as though it were lifted directly out of the 70's. It's psychedelic nature stands out wondrously.
"Can't Stop" is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. It starts fast paced, but somewhat quiet, until it reaches the climax. An amazing bridge to the verse is played by John. The verse is far better than the chorus, as Frusciante provides majestic backing vocals. Amazing song. "I Could Die for You", the shortest song on the album, is hard to describe. It's elegant and beautiful and gentle in it's nature. The track is quiet, yet perky and alive, as though driven by an enveloping, fervent, fanatical force. "Midnight" is another gem. The sounds which it engages have rarely been seen elsewhere. It is so unique, as each one of the songs are. Melodic and lush, bare and unsparing. "Throw Away Your Television" is the funkiest number on the album, though certain sections imply an innovative sense, and as though one were experiencing a whirlwind of nuance and jet speed illustriousness.
"Cabron" is an experimental track, which has a tang of Latin influences, hence the name, and is played exclusively on an acoustic guitar. It is another vastly dissimilar song which contradicts much of its colleagues. "Tear", a striking and lethargic (and long) song is an unexpected tribute to the Beach Boys. A magical trumpet solo is performed by Flea, which allows the song to prevent itself from becoming lost on the record. "On Mercury" is, if there had to be one, the weakest track on the entire album. The faux ska sound simply sparks too much turmoil between the songs it surrounds, and does not fit in with the grand message which By the Way is attempting to articulate.
It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: "Minor Thing", which shows, blatantly, how much Kiedis has evolved as both a lyricist and a singer. His compelling and spellbinding voice gives way to the enchanting, enthralling and captivating guitar playing given by John. "Warm Tape" is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track the Chili Peppers have ever produced. The sound is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created.
The final and longest song on By the Way, "Venice Queen", may be the most meaningful. It's mellow and windy intro gives one the sense of walking in a forest, while the bitter cold wind attacks you from all angles. It defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Anthony comes in perfectly and begins singing in a depressed and crestfallen manner. Until, however, the song completely turns around and kicks itself into high gear. Near the halfway mark, it turns from a glum ballad to a driven acoustic melody, alluding to the death of Gloria Scott, a woman who aided Anthony in the fight against drugs. John provides majestic backing vocals, to make this song an amazing stand out.
So, if you took the time to read why By the Way is the best album ever recorded, you'll purchase it. Carefree.

The Chili Peppers finally hit their stride with Mother's Milk, for the first time making their breakneck mix of funk, rap, and metal smooth enough to attract the masses, while keeping it raw enough not to alienate old fans. They've straddled that edge ever since. It didn't hurt that they offered a pretty mainstream cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" to introduce the album. That single though, and the rest of Mother's Milk (including "Knock Me Down" and the randy "Sexy Mexican Maid") is pure Pepper--from Anthony Kiedis's in-your-face vocals to Flea's chattering bass. Milk was also guitarist John Frusciante's debut with the group and he shines, especially on Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:
GREAT CD!.......2006-11-02
Good Time Boys.......2006-07-26
This was the bands first commercial success, and of course the introduction of John Frusciante and Chad Smith. Only John could have filled the void left behind by Hillel Slovack, and it is clear on this album Hillel was one of his biggest influences. I doubt the Red Hot Chili Peppers would have ever tasted the success they have, had it not been for John, as he brings something more to the band.
And then of course there's Chad, who hits the drums harder than anybody. Flea's bassline lays the foundation, you can feel all of his energy being poured into the making of this record, while Anthony has a couple of his best lyrical efforts on here. (Knock me down, Taste The Pain).
While this album may not be as good as the ones that followed, (with the exception of 'One Hot Minute', of course) it is certainly a good aquisition for anybody who jumped on the post 'blood sugar' bandwagon.
A couple of songs on here (Stone Cold Bush & Johnny,Kick A Hole In The Sky) will leave you breathless, while a couple (Magic Johnson & Nobody Weird Like Me) could have easily been left off the album and not missed.
Overall, a very good effort nonetheless...It definitely set the stage for what was to come.
The Chili Peppers at their meanest.......2006-07-02
1. Good Time Boys: Flea's funky slap-bass line opens this track, which then explodes into a powerful blast of hard rock. This track is an explosive anthem about the Chilis themselves, as "they don't believe in age" and "make a sad man happy". It's clear; the Chilis are back from the brink, and are taking no prisoners.
2. Higher Ground: An incredible tribute to Stevie Wonder, this is a pulse-pounding song that will dance around in your head for a while.
3. Subway To Venus: The manic funk never stops. The track features some wildly funky insturmentals, including an over-the-top trumpet by Flea. As Anthony puts it, this song will "make you dance, or make you **** your pants". The song also features a mind-blowing insturmental attack, which will make you "bust into your funkiest stroll", or have a heart attack.
4. Magic Johnson: Truely bizarre. A tribute to Anthony and Flea's favorite team the LA Lakers, the Chilis unleash a manic chant-rap that will have you bouncing off the walls.
5. Nobody Wierd Like Me: This song about Flea is a masterpiece of mayhem. The track is dominated by a pulsing, surging breakneck attack of adrenlin-fueled hard rock that will set your brain on fire. You'll also be wondering by the end of the song, "how does Flea play on this track without his fingers falling off?"
6. Knock Me Down: A slightly-slower paced song than the mayhem before, but instead a more introspective rocker about Hillel Slovak and drug addiction. The chorus steals the show here, with some beautiful backing vocals along with the song's unexpectedly touching and true-to-life lyrics.
7. Taste The Pain: The Chilis reveal an unexpected dark side on this track, with morose lyrics and chilling insturmentals. The chorus is a true knockout, with John's demented wail complimenting Anthony's pain-filled lyrics.
8. Stone Cold Bush: The hard funk steals the show once again, with surging insturmentals and naughty lyrics that are sure to turn some heads. There's also an insturmental solo that has some certain "sound effects" in the background (which I'll leave to your imigination) that will put a dirty grin on your face.
9. Fire: This two-minute song is completely insane. The Chilis reveal the manic energy that first got them attention (and notoriety) in their early days with this track. They also go completely insane in the middle of the song, in a sudden and hair-raising burst of energy.
10. Pretty Little Ditty: After the all the mayhem, sexiness, and tales of addiction, it's time for something completely different. This track is a beatiful and atmospheric jam between John and Flea, that will cool you off a bit (and give you a chance to change your soiled shorts).
11. Sexy Mexican Maid: A slower track than the others, a jazzy tale about a sexy Mexican maid. The erotic lyrics really make the song all the more memorable.
12. Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky: An unexpectedly epic track with lyrics about Native American plight. The heavy, funky insturmentals are in their top form on this track, with a knockout chorus that features some amazing backing vocals.
Sure, you've read this review and many others like it, but what good is it that you haven't purchased this album yet? Don't spare another second until you have this album and the other works of the Chilis in your hands.

and the cover of stevie wonder's classic "higher ground" was an excellent choice for the chili's as they put their own warped funky punk twist..
this also features the other single "knock me down"
also on "Pretty little ditty" that riff i know i've heard that riff before and few years ago.. in a one hit wonders "crazytown" "butterfly" i've heard that tom petty is sueing the chili's for usually an riff on their classic new single "dani california"from one of his old songs well i hope the chili's sued crazytown for the use of that beautiful riff..
final summary the chili's have made classic albums over the past 25 year either with hillel slovack john frusicante and the vasely underrated album with dave navarro..
the chili's certainly know in an clinched saying "bring the funk up"

At the time of its release, One Hot Minute was viewed as the beginning of a new direction for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Guitarist John Frusciante had departed and former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro joined the ranks after some false starts with short-lived replacements. Band chemistry here isn't quite up to past standards. Navarro stretches out throughout the album, imbuing tunes with a heavy dose of hard rock and psychedelia and providing a stark contrast from Frusciante's dexterous noodling. Tracks such as "Warped" and "Aeroplane" display a band prone to exploring a less frenetic hard rock, while "Shallow Be Thy Game" sounds like the old band. Frusciante eventually returned to the fold, so this 1995 collection now stands as a curious intermission for the Peppers. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
#1 on my list of Most Underrated Guitar (Rock) Albums of the Last 25 Years.......2007-06-04
This is obviously not an easy album to like; many people will find that, stylistically, the album's scope is just too broad. Familiarity with the material is key to liking it; it's simply too overwhelming to take in all at once. "Transcending", the album's closer, floats on air for the first half, then suddenly turns assaultive and angry. This is not radio friendly material for the most part, and it most certainly is not safe. It is, however, exciting and a refreshing change from the usual stale AB/AB/C type of songwriting. Of course, there are hits here; "My Friends" and "Tearjerker" (a song rumored to be about Kurt Cobain) received airplay, but they don't represent the album as a whole. No one or two songs could.
In terms of technical ability, the Peppers have never been better. They seamlessly utilize odd time signatures as well as any progressive band, and production by mainstay Rick Rubin is crisp and clear. Navarro, who has always been fond of experimenting with different guitar sounds, shows surprising reserve here. Seldom does he stray from more than a simple Wah and Chorus pedal setup. Occasionally there is a bit of delay added but, for the most part, the odd sounds you think you're hearing turn out to be the style of the music rather than any added effects. Flea, too, shines, popping and slapping bass notes one minute, hammering and pulling off the next, but always serving as a solid foundation and backing off where needed. Now if we could only get the man to stop singing, although I suspect the addition of his warbling, off-key vocal "Pea" was done to make regular vocalist Anthony Kiedis sound better by comparison. As for Kiedis, his lyrics have matured as well, while still retaining his unusual wit. "Coffee Shop" boasts the terrific couplet "Meet me at the coffee shop / We can dance like Iggy Pop" while, on a more serious note, the Agnostic "Shallow Be Thy Game" announces "Your Hell is something scary / I prefer a loving god", then continues "And what is worse / I do not serve in fear of such a curse". Personal and spiritual exploration are the intertwining themes on the album. The only true problem I have with the lyrics is the continuous stream of vulgarities. While I'm not a Puritan by any means, I do love to share great music with people, and this limits my ability to do so in this case. Nevertheless, the listener should be warned: this one is raunchy even by the Peppers' standards.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers go through guitar players like Spinal Tap went through drummers. Some, like current axeman John Frusciante, have been in and out of the band for years while others, like pre-One Hot Minute guitarist Jesse Tobias, were only around for a few months. If you have always found yourself on the verge of liking the band, Dave Navarro has given them the edge you just may be looking for on an album that ranks as #1 on my list of Most Underrated Guitar (Rock) Albums of the Last 25 Years.
One Hot Minute ~ Red Hot Chili Peppers
======================================
The Good - Amazing stylistic depth and replayability; technical skill has never been better
The Bad - Flea sings; too vulgar to share with my kids
The Final Word - This is a sonically exciting album that needs to be heard several times in order to learn, then love, the music.
Not the same band.......2007-03-18
A Weird Detour from RHCP.......2006-11-16
This album IS, in my a opinion, a strange detour from the line of continuity that the Chili Peppers had been following. The first album was patchy funk affair nurtured under the hollow production imposed by GoF's Andy Gill. The second album saw a lazy, fun sort of funk come to the fore under the auspices of George Clinton. With "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan," there was a move towards trebly funk rock. 1989's "Mother's Milk" was a great blend of powerful funk rhythms and massive guitar overdubs. The sound was rather balanced by the sheer intensity of it all, and the production made it all enjoyable. The next album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," brough the production back to a more stable level. It was here where the care-free funk and the unique guitar work were allowed to flourish in their own manner. And the results were great.
But "One Hot Minute" sees the production values take an abrupt dark shift. The general atmosphere of the album is one of hazy psychedelia meshed with overly dark sensibilities. Songs like Warped, Deep Kick and the title track best exhibit this foray into the dark side. The psychedelia comes to the fore on both the funky numbers (Walkabout, Falling into Grace) and poppier tracks like Airplane. Both of these types of songs inhabit a barely lucid realm that's totally different from the band-in-a-room sound on the previous album. Sometimes, the darkness and the psych can both manifest themselves within the confines of a particular song. All of this can be rather unsettling for those accustomed to a funky, happy-go-lucky sort of juvenile sound.
The songs themselves are much more difficult to swallow than the tracks on previous albums. Those albums had a lot of filler and throwaway tracks, while all of BSSM could be enjoyably absorbed in a single sitting. With "One Hot Minute," however, the overbearing heavyness makes it hard to listen to the album over and over. Navarro's guitar sound is just too heavy in many ways, and it drowns our Flea's characteristic bass in many instances. The vocals on the tracks rely more on attitude than content (as always with Kiedis), but there's a certain straightforward approach here that stands in contrast with the more playful mannerisms of previous album. The various songs can be instantly catchy or tough to assimiliate, but very few are actually terrible. For instance, the title track descents into unnecessary repetition which just hurts its value in the end. But, for the most part, the tracks are all quite solid in their own right.
This album seems to head down a direction that defies the route that the Chili Peppers seemed to have been following. The production and the songs, coupled with the heavier guitar sound and vocal approach, made it tough to stomach this piece of work. In retrospect, however, it manages to stand on its own quite well. It's not a dud; it's just an odd digression that will take some time to reconcile and appreciate.
Pretty dope actually.......2006-10-29
awesome and beautiful.......2006-10-22
i would say that this dave is the best guitarist rhcp ever had
however, frusciante is my favorite musician of all time, so his stuff remains my favorite.
the one great thing this album has is that it flows beautifully, not like a collection of songs but as a collection of art. music, poetry, attitude, meaning, all of that into one album something that so far rhcp has been unable to recreate. I also enjoyed the lack of sex driven masculine songs on here replaced by more sensitive songs (not that i dislike sir psycho sexy, or the like). One hot minute is beautiful and only surpassed by bssm, rhcps masterpiece.
warped-kind of scary, atmospheric song about keidises addiction to drugs
aeroplane-a song with references about keidises drug addiction, but more importantly, a song about music providing a high instead of drugs
deep kick- a song about the crazy times keidis flea and hillel had as kids, including using drugs
my friends- a sad ballad about keidises friends depression)maybe after hillels death)
coffee shop-quick song about nothing with the sickest bass solo ever
pea-sung and played soley by flea(the bassist) good song about how stupid rednecks and homophobes are
one big mob- odd song with lots of variety, and a crying baby solo, its awesome
walkabout-is this a song about walking? i think maybe reguardless its awesome and one of my favorites on here
tearjerker-sad song about the death of kurt cobain
one hot minute - about keidises first kiss i think its so cool
falling into grace-the most beautiful song on the album, with almost billy corgan-esque lyrics (she moves in a rapture that her capsule might land on your star)
shallow be thy game-good song about the banality and closed mindedness of religion, some of the greatest lyrics , no truer words were ever spoken
transcending- never heard anthony scream like this such a great closer, very angry and dark, leaves you with the sad and dark feeling that "warped" brang you into originally

There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Red Hot + Blue adds a whole new dimension to the art of swellegance. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
red hot and sometimes, not!.......2007-05-14
the representation of artists is a cross section of who was hot in 1990 with few exceptions (prince, janet jackson, madonna and cyndi lauper immediately comes to mind--madonna would pay her dues soon though). some of them are gloriously up to doing the cole porter songs justice.
for example, lisa stansfield's 'down in the depths' is elegantly jazzy and a perfect showcase for her sweet honeyed mezzo. and, kd lang can do wrong working her way through 'so in love'. it's brilliant. as is annie lennox's 'ev'ry time we say goodbye'.
others bring their stamp to the songs and make it happen for the pop market. u2's 'night and day' is a great success, david byrne takes 'don't fence me in' on a great romp and fine young cannibals take 'love for sale', which has an unshakeable identity with women from billie holiday to aretha franklin, and makes it a randy boy-toy cruise that porter would have loved!
now, while sinead o'connor and iggy pop made be the last two singers one would expect to take on cole porter, o'connor's whispery boop-a-doop approach to 'you do something to me' is a definite change of pace and pop just says 'so what!?' he and debbie harry give 'well, did you evah?' the punked out once over that again would have tickled porter to no end.
now, if he wouldn't lose his sense of humor on some of the rest, as a listener i do. jody watley has one of the toughest tunes to do in 'after you--who?'. and a sense of humor or a little help from elton john might have saved her. as is her apporach is too studied and careful. and i don't get salif keita's 'begin the beguine'. this is one of the songs that needed to be sung because of its lusicious melody. and i like rap as much as the next person but i have to concede the point that porter's lyrics don't need reconception as raps.
A CD I still listen to regularly after years.......2007-02-19
The artists have different styles, so you'll probably like some tracks much more than others. I think they're uniformly good with some standouts, such as Annie Lennox's Everytime We Say Goodbye.
Interesting tribute developing now it's own classic status........2006-07-18
The songs and artists here are a sound spread of genre. Sung in either classic form or as refreshing reworkings. On the whole it works well with a few unfortunate exceptions.
It is well worth adding to a discerning collection. My personal favourites are those which by and large retain their classic quality, Annie Lennox, K D Lang and Lisa Stansfield do beautiful interpretations of their chosen songs. Andy Bell and David Byrne add twists which work to great effect. It is a certainty that the album is developing it's own classic status as time moves on, it was origianlly released in 1990. The perfect tribute at the time and a mark of how far we have come in an effort to fight HIV. The songs howevr in my opinion need little tinkering or adjustment since they were and are beautiful, it is a shame some of the artists chose to rework certain songs so heavily.
FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS THE BEST SONG.......2006-05-21
LOVE FOR SALE BY THE FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS. THE CANNIBALS
NOT ONLY DO JUSTICE TO COLE PORTER'S LEGACY, THEIR PERFORMANCE
ILLUSTRATES PORTER'S SONGWRITING BRILLIANCE. ROLAND GIFT NAILS THE SONG'S MOODS AND THE ACCOUSTIC TOUCH IS ON TARGET FOR THIS SONG. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE CANNIBALS ONLY MADE A COUPLE ALBUMS, BUT LOVE FOR SALE IS ARGUABLY THEIR FINEST SONG, AND REASON ENOUGH TO BUY THIS CD.
Ridiculous blended with the sublime.......2006-02-26
Some of the cuts are excellent. Sinead O'Connor needs to do more standards. Annie Lennox can sing anything and I'll love it. Tom Waits, on the other hand, sounds best singing his own music. Song samples listed on the Amazon web page give the best segments of the songs, not a representative sample. So, if you enjoy experimenting, or can afford to buy a whole CD for a few good tracks, get this CD. If you want an album of Porter's standards this is not for you.

With their second album, Freaky Styley, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were still growing into their oversize funkdafied britches. The polished funk-punk-metal-rap hybrid of later albums was still in its seedling stage here, with the group yet to successfully merge those elements. Still, there's a consistent old-school garage feel. Flea's bass lines, normally in hyperdrive, are clipped and springy, like bare feet hopping on a hot Los Angeles blacktop. Lead singer Anthony Kiedis risks sounding like a parody of the vocal styles he's trying to emulate but commands the songs with every variation of bravado his voice can muster. And finally, the merit of this album could stand solely on the talents of the late guitarist Hillel Slovak, who infuses the tracks with resonating harmonics, psychedelic screeches, and righteous riffs. As disjointed and occasionally amateurish as this album was, it was also groundbreaking and captured the undivided attention of the rock world. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:
Thank you, Michelle.......2007-05-07
Super pfunky!.......2007-03-09
What we have here is a very entertaining variety of off-kilter, and bizarre pieces of funky rock; but to give you my view on the Peppers in general, so to compare your personal opinion to mine, I think that 'Freaky Styley' 'Mothers Milk' 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' and 'Uplift Mofo Party' are the Chili Peppers most creative, and entertaining albums. This is the Chili Peppers before the extreme funk and experimentation was watered down by alternative and commercial influences. To me, this is more along the lines of what the Chili peppers should have remained.. but of course I am more into Primus and Tom Waits than anything alt pop.
The only downfall to this album is the sometimes immature lyrics. While I don't enjoy the later Peppers music all that much, I do think that they have really evolved lyrically. The production isn't so good either, wich may bother you, but I find it to add personality to this particular recording.
If you are looking for classic Chili Peppers radio hits, then look elsewhere. There is not a radio-friendly song on this album. If you are looking for something weird, funky, and fun, then I would say that you have found it..
Double Awesome!.......2006-11-06
Definitely Funky . . . .......2006-11-01
Guitarist Hillel Slovak was without a doubt something special and probably would've gone on to much greater heights with the band had he not ODed. Also without-a-doubt, there's some good stuff on here and I especially like the bonus extended version of "Freaky Styley." And their version of "If You Want Me To Stay" is pretty good, but why bother with it when the original is so much groovier and soulful? This music is pioneering, trend-setting stuff to be sure, but the band has gone on to make music so much better that this album mostly retains an appeal for fans who were there when it came out, or maybe for those who just want to funk and don't mind the lack of superior songwriting that the band would go on to produce.

Classic Chili Peppers.......2007-03-08
This album really offers a glimpse into the band's roots and shows insight into how they evolved into the group they are today. A must own for any true RHCP fan.

Get it Right.......2006-04-07
Just because Californication or BSSM was more popular doesn't mean it wasn't a work of art. Uplift does not touch either of those albums, which are classics and two of the greatest albums ever made.
They truly combined everything when they made those albums, and delved into a world with songs like "Under the Bridge", or "I Could Have Lied" on BSSM, which were missing from Uplift.
Uplift is still a five star album, but "true" chili fans are wrong when they say it's the last good thing they did.
FUN FUN FUN!!!.......2006-03-21
