70' style hard rock with a light touch.......2007-04-25
Hello, Darkness..........2007-01-18
Classic Rock Makes A Comeback.......2007-01-09
Nothing like Queen!!! Original and excellent!.......2006-10-16
This album is amazing. The scorching guitar solos, pounding rhythm section and shrill, powerful singing shows intelligence and originality. Don't listen to people who have nothing else to whine about. This beats all of today's boring, dull music with no talent musicians and boring, cheesy lyrics. Buy this and let it add a bit of colour to your life.
The Darkness, Oasis, and, last but by no means least, the Scissor Sisters are out to save the music industry. Don't knock 'em till you've tried 'em.
Oh, and BUY!
Permission granted chaps - a hearty 3.5 stars.......2006-09-06
The band seem quite tight and not afraid to show their influences such as Queen and other 70's eccentricities. But they also bring a fresh version of their idols to the table such as the slightly funky Stuck in a Rut and the deliberately ridiculous Love On the Rocks With no Ice. This quite deliberate humour also sets these boys apart from their peers - for some time prior to it's release the whole hard rock/heavy metal scene had so little of it. Of couse Euro metal bands were happy to play around, but UK bands and especially US bands seemed incapable of imparting any sense of fun unless it was grudginly offered under layers of irony.
So musically pretty good stuff, light hearted in attitude and with a decent production job and individualistic cover - no wonder this thing sold.
But - and there is a but. Many fans will be turned off by the vox of Justin Hawkins. Now I like the effect he's able to do with his voice, like a bloke with his wedding tackle in a vice, but why do it every song? Sure it's their signature sound but when you have a special weapon you bring it out for special occasions. Not beat yo audience over the head with it every time. So to listen to this album from one end to the other may not be the easiest thing to do.
If you like your hard rock with a nod to the past and with a big grin on it's face then snap this up. Almost three years after it's release it's videos are still in decent rotation and that says something for the bands skill at capturing a decent melody within a hard rock framework.

The Best CD. Ever.......2004-05-11
Black Shuck: A catchy, evil-sounding number with pure rock power.
Get Your Hands Off My Woman: An unbelievably rock song.
Growing On Me: Quite possibly the best song on the album.
I Believe In A Thing Called Love: The big hit off the album, with AC/DC-esque guitars.
Love Is Only A Feeling: One of the best power ballads ever. I love it.
Givin' Up: A great catchy, arena rock song.
Stuck In A Rut: A churning metal song.
Friday Night: A Thin Lizzy-sounding semi-ballad.
Love On The Rocks With No Ice: The heaviest song on the album, with roaring guitars and vocals.
Holding My Own: Another ballad, with great lyrics and great power.
This is overall the best album ever released. I think it can single handedly reverse the course of 2000's metal. If you are a metalhead, you must own this.
That dog dont' give a duck!.......2004-04-08
So far, this is my fave album of 2004. I enjoy the Darkness' tribute to 70's and 80's glam rock. I heard a lot of buzz abouth these guys last year--even Jack Black saying that they were one of his faves. I first heard them when Growing on Me was featured on the School of Rock soundtrack. I laughed when I first saw the I believe in a thing called love video. Justin Hawkins' look was so pricelessly glam--especially the floral tiara. What a hoot!
I really enjoy their rocking sound. I also really appreciate their releasing a tweaked clean version for guys like me who dont want all that cussin' (or is that shucking fit?). I like the fact that they changed the lyrics instead of blanking them out a-la-Blink 182, although that's okay too. This album is very much recommended. Enjoy!
Need Money to finish Rocket Ship........2004-04-02
oh no!.......2004-03-09
My advice:
go & listen to the legendary hard rock classic bands such as Deep purple, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, King Crimson, ELP, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Genesis.....they will not ever be forgotten in the next 50 years, but who will still remember the DARKNESS in the next 3 years??
Awesome, Pure Genius.......2004-02-03

Queen Pisstake? Most definitately!.......2005-09-12
Permission to speak.......2005-08-11
Yes, there is a passing resemblence to Queen but why would anyone want to listen to The Darkness when they could listen to the real thing instead? The songs on "Permision to Land" are indistinguishable pure throwaway HM that will never be remembered in 5-10 years time - unlike those of Queen - with poor quality lyrics seemingly reliant on four letter explitives for effect.
I hate this album every time I bother to give it a listen. Why don't the new generation of bands come up with something new instead of endlessley recyling all this old trousers? I remember a time when heavy prog bands (whom the darkness are trying to emulate on this debut album) would try and experiment. Unfortunately, I do not see any of this happening these days. I seriously fear for the future of rock & roll if new bands can't succeed in being a bit more original!

is it 2003 or 1983? hmmm too shock you it's both .......2006-02-12
and his brother wow what a new thing to rock to have your brother in a band with you [hmmm maybe they share hair-spray and tips on how to apply make-up and still look masucline any thought?]
the darkness exploded onto the rock mainstream after the failed single "i believe in a thing called love] was released and failed to chart over in this chopping island i live in england i think it stalled at number 39 well it's an odd number so what do you expect..to be taken seriously oh yeah the darkness don't
no change there for me then
so by the summer the new single "growing on me" or what it's called and this time they give us a treat in the shape of an promotional video show-casing the talents and "beauty" of the darkness you got to see them in all their "glory" "retches"
i was so disgusted when my eyes laid on that video
first of all the horrendous catsuit yeah it worked for freddie
mercury because he had balls[hawkins i'm afraid you don't]
then darkness mania started a'comin'
the re-treads of the eighties spandex and cheese balls getting lodged in your throat and the thoughts of the decade so rightly fogotten yeah the darkness were hell bent on makin' us remembered
in hideous fashion they were determined to serve us the meat and potatoes that was truly missing from rock for nearly 20 years no justin it's because rock got rid of that era when kurdt donald cobain decided to plug in a guitar and blow of them permed wigs that most bands wore to get "massive" hair so stupid even brian may would laugh...
justin hawkins has quoted saying that the darkness are queen and ac/dc joined together in gay rock marriage god forbide if that ever happen they wouldn't of sounded like this ragsack of non- formulated grabage
the darkness has said don't take them seriously so lets foget and then i can get rid of the picture of hawkins horrendous face and teeth[i surmise that dental hyigene is not at the top of hawkins list eh?]
and don't get me started on the christmas single "christmas time[don't let the bells end" please do..
in a year the darkness will be forgetten with the other pile of washed up eighties hair mettallers tryin' to bring back a genre that never really started in the first place
Fabulous.......2004-08-10
THE GREATEST THING IN 20 YEARS!!!.......2004-06-29
