Magic was created one starlit night in July 1990, when Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carreras met onstage at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and became the Three Tenors. They eschewed competitive instincts and cooperated in the spirit of mutual admiration to create one of the greatest musical events ever. This concert is an awe-inspiring orgy of the greatest hits for the tenor voice. Domingo and Pavarotti sing perfectly. The audience wins as these vocal supermen compete to seduce the hearts of the audience. One moment Domingo brings thrilling fire and pain to "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca; the next, Pavarotti rises to heavenly heights in an inspired rendition of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Carreras is the competent little brother, one step behind the greatness of the big brothers from opera's Ponderosa. His singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys; but his enthusiasm and passion are unrivaled. If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!
Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23
First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.
I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.
As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!
At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.
All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.
The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!
The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.
It is heavenly! I recommend this CD to you, because in my humble opinion, it will bring sunshine to your heart!!! : )

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Their story is truly one of the more unusual tales of classical music today. Pop music has produced world-famous examples of all-in-the-family groups (which typically gave way to one or two solo stars as the years passed). And of course there's the Trapp Family singers of The Sound of Music fame. But the sibling pianists known as the 5 Browns are in a category all their own. They've gotten mega-exposure from profiles on 60 Minutes, Oprah, and the like as the first example in the history of the esteemed Juilliard School of Music in which five members of the same family have won admission (scholarships at that!) and studied concurrently. But if this sounds like a P.T. Barnum publicity stunt, make no mistake: Desirae, Deondra, Gregory, Melody, and Ryan are the real thing--musicians of intense dedication and talent. Their debut CD offers different perspectives on this pianistic quintet. It's not surprising that the literature isn't exactly overflowing with arrangements for five pianos--so only 4 tracks here actually have all ten hands busy tickling the ivories (arrangements of "Flight of the Bumblebee," West Side Story scenes, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and music from Grieg's Peer Gynt). The flip DVD side includes videos of their amazing in-sync dexterity for "Flight" and the Bernstein excerpts, plus a charming interview introducing the very down-to-earth Browns. They talk about how they took to the piano, one by one, at a very early age and also point out that they remain each other's best friends, which helps them weather the stresses of the competitive classical performing arts world. Other tracks involve several four-hands settings and some solos (my own favorite is Melody's beautiful rendition of Debussy's gorgeous "L'Isle joyeuese"). When Disney and Pixar were producing their computer-animation breakthrough Toy Story, a project whose R&D costs alone demanded a blockbuster payoff, the conventional wisdom would have been to turn the music-scoring chores over to the stable of writers who'd made the likes of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast such sound successes. Instead they wisely handed the task to one Randy Newman, a musician who'd built his reputation writing some of the most skewed and astringent pop songs in history. The result is a technological marvel with a very human heart. "You've Got a Friend in Me" and "Strange Things" offer delight to listeners of any age, while "I Will Go Sailing No More" sounds like a melancholy orphan from Little Criminals--even if it's only lamenting a goofy, marooned toy space ranger. 04. Andy's Birthday: (3/5): As the opening to the Score of the Film I don't think I really expected much. For the opening it certainly doesn't start with much of a bang! Though I must say, it does get right to the idea of this piece. It's Andy's Birthday and Woody and rest of the toys are dreadfully worried!
05. Soldiers Mission: (3/5): Okay's heres the whole idea, Woody has sent the little green army men to go and see what presents Andy is getting for his birthday. This Instrumental doesn't say very much in terms of storyline presentation, but it definaly picks the Score up a little more. It is more high noted and more exciting then the previous Instrumental!
06. Presents: (5/5): WOAH! Now this one is what makes the score pick itself up. I'm not too sure on the name of the track being 'Presents' but I know that it totally captures that strong sense of panic when Woody and the rest of the Toys descover Andy is coming upstairs!
07. Buzz: (4/5): Well, the name says it all! Andy and his friends have just left and Woody has just got a new look at Andy's new toy! Buzz Lightyear! This Instrumental carries the story quite nicely. The second part of the Instrumental, the music from the 'Flying' Scene, reminds me of a Roller Coaster. By the end of this part in the Film Woody is Jealous of the new toy!
08. Sid: (5/5): Finally! We get introduced to the Villian of the film in this Instrumental Piece. Woody is busy mocking Buzz when they hear the laugh of Sid Phillips. A boy who apparently tortures toys! The Music for this scene fits quite well as an introduction to Sids character. Cruel, Rude and Punk!
09. Woody and Buzz: (4/5): The title for this Instrumental Piece fits quite well considering the Scene's it surrounds. First Woody accidently knocks Buzz out the window, next he is threatened by the toys, then meets up with Buzz at the Gas Station on the way to Pizza Planet. There is a certain tenseness concerning the bit of the Instrumental in which the toys attack Woody! Not much else to say about this Piece.
10. Mutants: (5/5): WOAH! I don't know why on earth this track is titled Mutants. The Mutant Toys dont make their Music cue until almost the end of the Piece! Anyway, Woody and Buzz are in a Claw game where you use a claw to get a prize. And guess who turns up...Sid! Sid 'Wins' them then takes them home. Soon after Woody and Buzz have a frightening confrontation with 'The Mutant Toys'! The object of Sids playtime. The Music for this whole track is pretty nice. It works well and gives off a definate wacko/horror sense, which makes scense considering the idea of the scenes.
11. Woody's Gone:(4/5): This Music Piece is calmer then the previous 'Sid's House' centred Pieces entitled 'Mutants'. Even do why this piece is entitled 'Woody's Gone' is beyond me. The music for this track begins after the Sequences at Andy's house. Whatever. Anyway, Woody and Buzz have survived one night, now they are victim to Sids cruelty. Thankfully they almost escape. But then the 'Mutants' arrive but Woody fails to be truly terrified again, and flees the room but discovers Sids Dog: Scud. Under the Circumstances this music is a preety fair accompnient to the introduction of Sid's Dog. The music is tense but not high noting tense. Besides, things are about to get worse.
12. The Big One: (5/5): Poor Woody and Buzz. Buzz has a broken arm and is trying to explain that to Andy's Toys, then Sid comes along and desides to blow Buzz up with a new rocket! Though the circumstances arn't ALL bad. Woody discovers the Mutants are not Cannibals like supposed back in Instrumental 10 'Mutants'. They fix Buzz. As an instrumental, its another panic piece. Though this time there is more at stake. Buzz's Life! Besides the music for this track is exciting and tense at the same time.
13. Home Together: ( 5/5): Well, I dont know why this track is titled 'Home Together'. Shouldn't it be 'Hang Together'. Who Knows?
This track is much like the previous one. At least the panic part is. But it has more of a marching tune to accompany the Mutants. Anyway, to get the lowdown, Woody and Buzz talk to each other, then Sid wakes up and takes Buzz to blow him up. Woody panics then enlists the help of the Mutant Toys, realising now they are not Cold hearted! The Mutants make their way outside without being noticed. Then they get ready for their showdown with Sid!
14. On the Move: (4/5): Not really one of my favorites. It is mostly a transitional track. In other words it wraps up the whole 'Sid' plot then goes right into the Climax. It works though! Anyway, Woody and the Mutants put their plan into action and terrify Sid. After a little celebration Woody and Buzz run to catch up with the moving Truck! THIS is the most dramatic scene! Will Woody and Buzz make it?
15. Infinity and Beyond: (4/5): Well this track concludes the Score for 'Toy Story'! Woody and Buzz use the rocked Sid strabbed to Buzz to catch up with the Van and land in the box beside Andy! A Happy Ending, as usual. As an insrumental piece it is very UPLIFTING and soars high with its high notes which, unlike the ones occuring during the 'SID' sequences (10-14) are not ones of horror. Otherwise a good piece.
As a complete Score Randy Newman does an excellent job of leaping from Joy to fear to bittersweet tears. This is by far my favorite score for a Disney/Pixar film. I highly reccomend it!

The Musical Accompaniment to Pixar's First Big Picture........2005-01-26
TOY STORY is a buddy flick and the songs and music on the album reflect that. From the wonderful "You've Got a Friend in Me" to the charming instrumental "Woody and Buzz", the music and songs of TOY STORY reflect an awareness and mentality that is often missing in movie music.
I enjoy listening to the instrumental pieces on the album, but am especially fond of the regular songs. Those songs are:
"You've Got a Friend in Me"--the song that captures the whole
buddy-theme of the movie. As a sidenote, this was one of the
most requested songs on the children's radio show I used to
produce.
"Strange Things"--a song about one's self-awakening and the
frustration felt in the goings on.
"I Will Go Sailing No More"--one of the saddest and most
haunting songs I have ever heard sung in a movie, the song is
all about the loss of a dream.
The TOY STORY album isn't for everyone. However, fans of the film and Randy Newman fans will probably enjoy it, not to mention Disney maniacs.

Well worth buying.......2002-08-25
I had never even heard of fado before buying this cd. It's truly beautiful music. If you also have never heard of fado before, I will try to describe it. This is not a form of rock music. It sounds a bit like the songs of some female American jazz singers, for example, Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holliday. The packaging says it is Portuguese blues, but it is definitely not as raw as the blues singers I'm familiar with (ie. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and B. B. King.) Most of the songs sound sad, but not sentimental. There is a slightly rough quality to many of the singers' voices that is very attractive. The songs were recorded at various times over the last forty years, so the sound quality varies, but it is acceptable. Even though each track is sung by a different singer, the cd still holds together and feels like a unit. The cd packaging does not include the lyrics, unfortunately, but if you understand Portuguese the words are clear enough to figure out.
Given that it introduced me to a new type of music that I now love, I would definitely recommend this cd to others.

Whether it's ukulele music, the island exotica of Martin Denny, the lounge crooning of Don Ho, or the slack key acoustic guitar tradition, many styles of music have emerged from the jeweled necklace in the Pacific known as Hawaii. Over the course of five albums, popular singer Keali'i Reichel (pronounced kay-ah-LEE-ee rye-SHELL) touches on both commercial adult contemporary songcraft and traditional ukulele and hula dance accompaniment--he was a noted hula dance instructor and cultural historian before becoming a professional musician. The Grammy-nominated Ke' Alaokamaile is the singer's tribute to his family, singing about his ancestors and his own life so far. While there a gloss on many of these contemporary songs (even when sung Hawaiian) that no doubt gives them a broad pop appeal--Reichel also does a sentimental but somewhat empty version of Sting's "Fields Of Gold"--the traditional songs are strong enough to prove Reichel's versatility. Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."
