Editorial Reviews
There are few things more depressing than a goofy punk rock band that suddenly decides it needs to be taken seriously. Sum 41 did a brilliant job parodying corporate rock, pop and a large chunk of the '80s with breakthrough hit "Fat Lip." But over three albums, the Canadian band has unwittingly gravitated in that very direction. On Chuck, its hard to tell whether the quartet is poking fun at the platinum class or merely paying tribute by copping entire melodies and verses from some of MTV's biggest stars--Metallica's "Battery" on "The Bitter End" and Linkin Park's "One Step Closer" on "No Reason," respectively. More troubling, however, its formerly tongue-in-cheek awe for cheap metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest seems to have turned into a full-on admiration. That's clearly no laughing matter. --Aidin Vaziri

What a compilation! Definitive indeed!.......2007-06-22
Some of the major cuts:
"Maybellene" was recorded in 1955, one of his first major hits. Talk about class: Willie Dixon played bass. The thumping rhythm and driving rock beat makes this a quintessential Chuck Berry song. This song reached # 5 on the Pop Chart, making Berry a recognizable figure.
In 1956, "Roll Over Beethoven" Another great rocker: "Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news." An infectious beat and driving singing.
"Up in the mornin' and off to School,
Teacher teachin' the golden rule."
So "School Day" goes, with the expectation of a lot more fun once the School Day is done.
"Rock and Roll Music" (1957) has the estimable Willie Dixon and Fred Below supporting Berry. Another rollicking early rock song that set the stage for what was to follow.
More greats from 1957--"Sweet Little Sixteen," a teaser of a song with a compelling pace; also from 1957, one of the greatest rock songs ever--"Johnnie B. Goode." "Go, Johnnie, go, go."
A number of these songs were covered by the "British invasion." British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and Beatles, covered such songs as: "Roll over Beethoven," "Little Queenie," "Come on," and so on.
This CD contains 30 of Chuck Berry's greatest hits, from "Maybellene" to "My Ding-a-Ling." If anyone is unfamiliar with Berry's oeuvre, this is a great place to start. For those who appreciate his role in rock and roll, this is a good addition, to pull together some of his best works. A good compilation. . . .

Good looking back.......2007-04-11
Chuck Berry is one of my old favorites. I danced to his music when I was a teenager. This CD contained many of my favorites from back in the day such as Johnnie B. Goode and Almost Grown. Also, some of his less known music was introduced. Havanna Moon was a surprising musical treat.
For the casual listener..........2007-04-03
"...Tidewater four-ten-oh-nine...".......2007-03-18
How can a guy come up with those riffs? Those simple, yet poetic lyrics? One of his rivals was the output of the Brill Building writers, but that was a group of enlightened kids (influenced by Berry, among others) feeding off of each others energy and ideas. Maybe the closest "rival" was Buddy Holly. Here is a poor guy from St. Louis who even pushed Presley, not to mention how he (along with Holly) inspired the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
Bottom line: great sound, finally a great single disc overview of one of the greatest musical minds since 1950 and certainly one of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" if you are looking for the genesis of rock n'roll.

Wind Me Up, Chuck!.......2007-07-16
My husband and I were having lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl today and "Chuck Baby" started playing on the jukebox. Everyone in the place was bobbing their heads! People were still singing the song long after it had ended! I left Ben's and went straight to store to buy this CD! As we say in DC, "This joint is CRANKIN'!" This is the serious party/driving CD. It was produced by Carl "Chucky" Thompson who has produced for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Biggie, NAS, Faith Evans, etc. If you are not familiar with Chuck Brown's music, this would be a wonderful introduction for you. The CD, like Chuck's live concerts, will not disappoint. My favorites are "Chuck Baby" (Chuck's daughter KK has a really nice flow on this one), "Theme from 'The Godfather'", and "Block Party." Maryland native and most-able crooner, Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on the song "Eye Candy." We (the DC Metro area) pledge our allegiance to Chuck Brown! He rocks!

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John SanchezCustomer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

Only in America could an album like this have come together: Eva Cassidy, a young vocalist who, had she lived, might have gone on to become her generation's favorite song interpreter, trading verses with Chuck Brown, seasoned godfather of the D.C. underground funk movement known as go-go. By the time this was recorded in 1992, the go-go trend had long since peaked for Brown, while the twentysomething Cassidy was still an unknown local session vocalist. Yet, on this set of standards, the two collaborate as if they were picking up where they'd left off decades earlier, from easy-riding versions of "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" to near-definitive renditions of "Over the Rainbow" and "Dark End of the Street." And while it's easy to focus on the posthumously acclaimed Cassidy, Brown's haunting solo turn on "You Don't Know What Love Is" suggests that unjustly overlooked talents are still making music in the shadows of our nation's capital. --Bill FormanCustomer Reviews:
Is It Just Me?.......2007-06-12
As to the music itself... The Eva Cassidy movement is so fervent it's tough to criticize anything she's ever done, but this is a very mixed collection of cuts that doesn't really even belong inside one jewel box. Three or four absolute pearls in a slurry of tired standards performed so perfunctorily they sound like they were taped on the Catskills circuit in the 1950s. Nothing wrong with Eva's voice, or Chuck Brown's for that matter, but you can smell the mothballs on much of the song selection and non-arrangements.
2 1/2 stars for the pearls.

She truly was the greatest female singer ever - her passion and pathos is unparalled . Her rendition of " God Bless the Child" is the best ever ! It will bring tears to your eyes .

Music in the Liquid Mind series changes little from one recording to the next--good news for contented fans of the long-running bliss-out series created by keyboardist/composer Chuck Wild. The former Missing Persons keyboardist and studio colleague of famed producer Ken Scott (David Bowie, Supertramp) has evolved into a premier space-music specialist whose relaxing, gentle soundscapes artfully evoke the softer side of the cosmos. His eighth Liquid Mind installment, subtitled Sleep, is a lovely, slo-mo spacewalk through serene, gravity-free realms that consistently yields a sustained sense of well-being and calm. Deserving of a spot at the head table with ambient music's most sophisticated sound designers, Wild creates slowly unfolding, universe-at-rest textures using few of the supplemental sonic dimensions (space winds, angelic voices) often employed by fellow stargazers Jonn Serrie and Jon Jenkins. And he sidesteps the small dramas and mysterious fractals that sometimes add a hint of uncertainty to the otherwise like-minded works of Brian Eno or Harold Budd. Happily, you'll hear no new-agey crystal bowls or plucked harps, either; just a warm, resonant, faintly classical glow skillfully designed for relaxation and peace. Pull up a cloud, lie back, and enjoy. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
"Mr. Wild successfully creates a soothing and calming atmosphere which could be an excellent addition to one's nightly sleep regimen." William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. Director of Sleep Disorders and Research Center Stanford University School of Medicine"The titles of the first seven Liquid Mind albums have honored values important to me on my life's journey. This eighth album honors the need in all of us for a healthy and regenerating rest each night. I hope you'll enjoy my music, and use it in good health." Chuck Wild

Other than the obvious fact that the music is fairly nondescript and very soothing, I don't know why it works so well, but it does.
Highly recommended if you have problems falling asleep.
Definitely makes you drowsyzzz zzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-04-21
I tried it (safely) at home. It has a warning; do not operate machinery or drive while listening to this cd. It does really work. I put it in the cd player in my alarm clock and put it on low before I went to bed. I think I fell asleep in 4 minutes.
The trick is the slow tempo. The music is almost complete phrases, no discernable tune but also not simply noises that sound spacey.
If you want something effective to calm yourself during yoga, to sleep to or to calm a fussy baby or put down the toddlers, this is it. Zzzzzz

Feels So Good!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-30
Chris Vadala:
On tenor and soprano saxophones, alto, and c flutes, and piccolo. He is without a doubt, one of the best reedists Mangione ever had in his band lineup. Gerry Neiwood was the other master! Chris Vadala's playing is so unique and his sound is extraudinary, and soulful. His magic adds so much more to the music of this album. His solo on Feels So Good is magnificent. I still find myself humming it over and over, hours after I've played it.
Grant Geissman:
On acoustic, electric, classical, and 12 string guitars, Grant Geissman, just might of played one of the greatest guitar solos in jazz history. Yes, you guessed it; the solo on Feels So Good. It's a wonder, he didn't spend hours and hours working it out, since it's so melodic.
Charles Meeks:
Funky, "Meet Man" Meeks. One of the grooviest bass players ever! He adds some hippness to the album.
James Bradley Jr:
Every drummer should learn from this master. Although some might not call him a master at this time, because he was only 18 years old. Well accomplished, who had a role in Cool Hand Luke when he was 7, was a child prodigy on the drums. He cools it down a little bit, on this album, but makes up for it, in color. Some nice conga playing on 11th Commandment.
The first song, Feels So Good, is Mangione's classic! Still, after 25 years, it's still loved by pop and jazz fans alike.
Here, the way it originally was issued, the full 9 minute version. With the edited version, so much magic was lost, and until this day, gone forever. Next up, Maui Waui. One of the most melodic songs ever; Chris Vadala's flute playing adds to the warmth and beauty of the piece. Theme From Side Street, is one of the greatest songs by Mangione, ever! The melody, the hook, the groove, it's all there. Number 4 is, Hide And Seek. Another classic. Great solos by all! I particularly love Vadala's soprano solo, and Geissman's guitar solo. Last Dance, is another pretty piece. It has a beautiful acoutsic guitar solo, by Grant Geissman. The last piece, 11th Commandment; another classic. Charles Meeks, and James Bradley Jr. are featured soloists here. Meeks's bass solo is really blusey and down to earth. After some splap bass by Meeks, the piece picks up. James Bradley Jr's solo is perfect for this particular piece. Not too over powering, not at all, boring, just right! This is a classic album, and is still enjoyed by many. This album put Mangione on the map, and if you enjoy any fusion, or early contemporary jazz, you'll love Mangione's music!

The Best of Chuck Brown.......2006-11-03
Long overdue retrospective of a true legend ! ! ! .......2006-08-23
Though DC's go go music (which Chuck Brown created) never caught on like it should have, the truth is that if you listen to this CD and don't come out convinced that Chuck Brown epitomized the words "legend", "style" and "funkyness" -- you ain't nothing...
As an added bonus, to fans of Chuck's more "musical elements", this CD is proabably his most consistantly engineered and best packaged representation to date... you really get to hear his various bands over the years work out, and have to be amazed how he's always at the helm gushing with his distinct trademarks - - the non-stop beats, those slick and funky guitar lines, the ever popping bass and congas and his funky emcee-ing and stage bands that are always funner than fun and tighter than tight.
Though Chuck can and does travel the year, it is true that he's under-appreciated... and its ashame because I truly believe that if everyone in the world knew more about him music worldwide would be 100 times as good !

Chuck Mangione composed this music for a film soundtrack in 1978, but it quickly took on a life of its own when it was released as a two LP set, garnering a loyalty the film never enjoyed. Its film origins certainly show both in the purely atmospheric quality of some of the music and in the earnest vocals and awkward lyrics that introduce the suite and later reappear. However, the simple themes and the powerful, minimal orchestrations--brass and drums for funereal military music; cello, flute, guitar, and eerie voice for the very pretty "Consuelo's Love Theme"--retain a strong appeal. Mangione's own performance on flügelhorn--sometimes hinting at Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain transported to harsher terrain--is frequently riveting, a darkly expressive, soulful element that conveys undiluted passion, sorrow, and joy. --Adam RainsCustomer Reviews:
