The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson

4 out of 5 stars Several Weak Tracks.......2007-06-27

The only thing holding this album back from being consistentatly a 5 star critic's favorite is the fact that it contains several weak tracks, and the title song Grease is possibly the only legitimate song that will bring back nostalgia for those that liked the movie and the singing in the musical. I always thought they were stuck in the 50s, but they've updated it to like the 70s or maybe even 90s, but still not modern enough for my tastes. The music is well crafted filler to a classic movie that will only date with time.

5 out of 5 stars Throwback music.......2007-05-29

If you hav ever seen the movie than you already know, and if you haven't, then you need to. It is a classic American musical, with great oldies music. Highly recommeded.

5 out of 5 stars Very Upbeat Songs.......2007-05-21

Listening to the music from Grease brings back the good memories of watching the movie. The music is funny (Summer Nights; Beauty School Dropout; Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee; Greased Lighting), touching (There Are Worse Things I Could Do; Hopelessly Devoted To You) and very 70's (Blue Moon; Rock "n" Roll Is Here To Stay; Born To Hand Jive). John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing great, but the supporting cast (Stockard Channing, Sha-Na-Na), also contribute to a good sound. Great rock and roll!

4 out of 5 stars Classic nostalgia .......2007-05-03

I of course remember when I was eight years old when Grease came out and I played the singles to death on the turntable. Revisiting now I remember how *cumbersome* it is. The first ten tracks are absolutely essential. They are the strength and reflection of the soundtrack and what makes the movie go.

Any listener should not be remiss about the cumbersome nature of the soundtrack. One can skip over easily the songs they don't like. Not like the ol' turntable vinyl where that convenience was not there. Let's face it, too much Sha-Na-Na is too much Sha-Na-Na.

Overall, it's a great buy for the asking price for those who remember. A versatile Travolta and Newton-John strutted their stuff in a time they could do no wrong. And contributions by Franki Valli, Channing and Avalon make this a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars A feel-good, sing-along soundtrack.......2007-04-14

Although I'm not usually a fan of movie soundtracks, my one big exception is Grease! Who wouldn't love this collection of sing-along songs that brighten your mood no matter when, or how often, you listen to them? Since Grease is also one of my all-time favorite movies, hearing the songs automatically makes me recall the particular scene they correlate with, and I invariably start smiling.

Grease consists of many talented actors and actresses, most of whom could sing as well as they could act. Therefore, each song -- including numerous solos by John Travolta, Oliva Newton-John and Stockard Channing -- is a treat to listen to.

If I were only allowed to bring one CD to the proverbial deserted island, Grease would probably be it! This is one purchase that will pay off, time and time again.

Greatest-hits collections often deprive the listener of the chance to experience an artist's true scope of talent. Not so with Steve Miller--his strength has always been more in crafting an occasional blast of FM-radio heaven rather than a dozen solid album tracks. Greatest Hits 1974-78 chronicles the best singles from Miller's most successful years, after he veered from Haight-Ashbury bluesy trippiness to more accessible blues-based pop-rock. There are the slippery grooves of "The Joker" and "Fly Like an Eagle," and there's the air-guitar-beckoning riff rock of "Take the Money and Run," "Jungle Love," "Rock n'Me," and "Jet Airliner." Don't expect groundbreaking art, expect references to the "pompatus of love" and instant gratification. Requisite listening at the classic-rock keg party. --Neal Weiss

5 out of 5 stars Miller Time!.......2007-07-17

This Steve Miller album gets 5 stars largely on its strength as a compilation. All of the Steve Miller hits you know from the radio are on this disc. It's all you need for an overview of Steve Miller and for slapping in the CD player when you're at a party and want some 70s rock on. This stuff is good, simple, rock music. Steve's vocals are well-backed by the guitars. Very solid album.

5 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-21

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
This is a rather fine example of what a greatest hits CD should be. A bunch of really good songs with not much in the way of "filler".
Tracks 1,2,3,4,8,9 & 11 are the popular classics you'll know from the radio. (Tracks 6,12 & 13 aren't that popular, but they grow on you). So you get $7 worth of essential tracks for the current Amazon price of $8. Not bad. (You can get each of these songs individually from iTunes and save yourself $1). Two other good songs from Steve Miller, that fall outside the 1974-1978 range, are "Abracadabra" and "Living in the USA". Don't go and pay $14 for the "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD just to get these two additional songs. I'd buy each of them on iTunes for $1, if available.
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Fly like an Eagle, let you spirit set you free........2007-06-10

A wonderful CD of some of Mr. Miller's best tunes. This is a staple for those times when you want to kick back and relax, and just fade into your memories. Super tunes.

5 out of 5 stars TAKES ME BACK.......2007-05-14

I LOVE IT. I LISTEN AT HOME OR IN THE CAR . IT HAS ALL OF THEIR GREAT SONGS AND IT IS SO MUCH FUN.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Outdated Compilation.......2007-03-12

The Steve Miller Band produced some remarkable pop rock songs in the 1970s. They were sticky, short and sweet tracks that bore the mark of ingenuity and economy. They didn't take up a lot of your time, but they songs stayed in your mind for a long, long time. Indeed, many of these are FM staples down to this day. This 1978 collection is filled with the gems of their mid-70s work. How do the songs rate?

Swingtown- It begins with a fade-in. The bassline we hear becomes the backbone of the song. Harmonies fill the song, as do catchy melodies. An excellent way to kick off the compilation.

Jungle Love- A classic. Just thinking about "Jungle Love" is driving me crazy.

Take the Money and Run- A short little gem that's one my favourite SMB tracks. The off-kilter drum intro is great, as is the zany guitar work. The lyrics themselves tell the story of a robbing couple and the sheriff who's out to get them. Goofy fun all around.

Rock 'N Me- "Keep on 'a rockin' me baby" says it all. Memorable guitar riff, too.

Serenade- Not the best song, but good by most standards.

True Fine Love- Cute ballad with a nice little swing to it.

The Stake- A slow-burning pop classic.

The Joker- This is from 1973, so its inclusion is dubious. But guess what? The song is one of SMB's most enduring and pivotal tracks. If "Maurice" followed by a guitar-made whistling-like sound doesn't ring a bell, there's something wrong with you.

Fly Like an Eagle- A mellow paean to freedom embossed in some fine electronic atomospherics. One SMB's other key songs.

Threshold- Not really a song at all. It's an intro to...

Jet Airliner- Pop rock about being a celebrity. Great chorus.

Dance, Dance, Dance- More country than anything else. Good thing they stuck it at the end, because I always skip this cold fish.

Winter Time- Doesn't do anything for me.

Wild Mountain Honey- Dull.

Now, as you might've noted, a great many of these tracks garnered quite a bit of praise from me. That's because the music itself is quite awesome. However, this set does have some weaknesses:

*Nothing (aside from "The Joker") outside the 74-78 range. That means you don't get any of SMB's early classics or the early 80s cheesball "Abracadabra" track.

*Original issue CD, which means the sound quality is rather low.

*Not a lot of songs. Given that this compilation was originally released on an LP, we can understand why we don't get that much music.

*Better compilations are out there. "Young Hearts" offers more songs than this, and the sound is better. BUT,if you're looking for a concise overview of hits, you might be interested in this one. If you down mind less tracks and low audio quality, this compilation will work for you. It'll probably cost you less, too.

Overall, this compilation was great for its time. But in this day and age, it seems rather outdated. Fantastic tunes, though!

One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Black Box!.......2007-07-19

Black Sabbath's gotta be one of my favorite bands now. I wanted to get some of their records and the "Black Box" seemed like a good starting point.

Black Sabbath, in my opinion created some of the most brilliant songs, ever! True music enthusiast should at least own their first 4 albums.

For the people thinking the "Black Box" is a rip off, think about it. You get the first 8 Black Sabbath CDs, that's $80+ if you get them individually, (and the ones in the box set are remastered too), and a sexy velvet hardcovered biography of the history of Black Sabbath, all inside a cool box, for around $60. I don't see how this is a rip off...

4 out of 5 stars nice box!.......2007-07-14

here we have it all 8 sabbath records with ozzy fronting, nothing new whats so ever we have all heard these songs before but let me tell you it sounds fresh, remastered you hear little things in the songs you may have missed before. one thing that i would like to clear up is upon purchasing this box set i was reading other reviews and noticed someone stated that the medley tracks mainly on the selt titled album had been seperated into individual tracks, this is not the case they are still medleys. maybe they changed it for different pressings of the box set (highly unlikey) but it matters not this is black sabbath how it was intended.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest black box ever.......2007-06-16

The reason I bought this is because if I ever wanted to experience Black Sabbath then I should just get this and listen to all the albums that Ozzy was on. Boy was I in for a ride! I have listened to the albums from beginning to end and there are key tracks that I had loved on each album but then hearing them along side with the other tracks makes them even more attractive. Like the segue of "Am I Going Insane" with "The Writ" and many others. I absolutely LOVE this box set. The SUEDE book goes through each album and track explaining them which is cool and i watched the dvd and it's very good just makes you wanna trip out and watch.

So if your thinking of getting this then DISH out the money and get it. It's totally worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-06-11

While I already owned the original CD issues of all these albums and most of them on vinyl as well, I can tell you that I do not feel that I wasted any money buying this box set. Not only is the sound quality a HUGE improvement over the extremely muddy, low volume original CD's, but it's a significant improvement over the vinyl as well. And this is comming from someone who is a vinyl junkie. This is how these albums should be heard.

5 out of 5 stars oh yeah.......2007-06-10

the beginning, the best, dvd is classic, remastered discs, almost sound as good as the original vinyl(almost),nothing sounds better than master of reality on vinyl, but this is the best way to upgrade your early sabbath collection,

The Best That I Could Do collects the singles that led John Mellencamp into the radio/jukebox pantheon he celebrated in "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." and "Cherry Bomb." While albums such as American Fool, Uh Huh, and Scarecrow held Top 10 spots for months, their spinoff hits made this Hoosier disciple of Jagger, J.B., and Iggy into something like a Reagan-era John Fogerty: not only were "Pink Houses," "Paper in Fire," and "Crumblin' Down" wise (and wiseacre) dispatches from an America where it wasn't always morning, they could fill a dance floor and get you pounding the dashboard on the way home. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars I had forgotten how much I enjoyed his music..........2007-03-14

until I heard a couple of his '80s hits on my daughter's ipod. So I bought this and wasn't disappointed. All great songs, all great to sing along to. I personally think his '80s stuff was way better than Springsteen's '80s output. Not as bombastic or nostalgic.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Hits.......2007-02-08

Good Collection of Hits but you might want to invest your $$ on Mellencamp's excellent "Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits [LIMITED EDITION]"

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Songs.......2006-05-27

Great Collection of Songs
This is another one of those "best of" compilations. If you're new to John or just want to hear the hits (up until 1988), this is a good CD to get. If you'd like to hear what John is really about, I think you should get the individual albums. Although all the songs here are greats, it's almost too skimpy of a collection to fully appreciate John's great music. Still, it's good fun to have all the hits in one place for easy listening convenience, and I do recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever - All Classics.......2005-09-21

This will be the fourth time I am purchasing this CD. My daughters have "borrowed" every other copy I had. Just the fact that I would buy this 4 times (so far) should tell you something. And you know what? If I lose this copy, I'll buy it AGAIN!!

If you love John Cougar Mellencamp, this is a CD you must have.

Amazon.com essential recording

Evita was Andrew Lloyd Webber's last show with Tim Rice before he went on to projects with less interesting collaborators, so it's no surprise that it remains his most consistently involving and rewarding work. Loosely based on the life of Eva Peron, the charismatic wife of post-World War II Argentine president Juan Peron, Rice's compelling story of one woman's rise from poverty to power is complemented by Lloyd Webber's colorful music as propelled by vigorous Latin rhythms. The showstopper, of course, is "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," but the score is full of gems, including "On This Night of a Thousand Stars," "Oh, What a Circus," and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall." Headlining the 1978 Broadway cast, Patti LuPone is fabulous in the title role, showcasing her big voice and brash egotism in the role she was born to play. Mandy Patinkin is Che, the Greek-chorus character commenting on and criticizing the Perons, and his tenor is sweet on the ballads and powerful on the driving numbers. LuPone and Patinkin made their names with Evita (and took home well-deserved Tonys), but it's the third principal, Bob Gunton, who elevates this cast to the stratosphere. As Peron--a role often filled by a nonsinger--Gunton inflects his strong voice with both menace and sensitivity. Forget the movie; this is the definitive version of this score, and an essential cast recording. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars SUPERCALAFRAGILISTICEXSPIALODOSIS.......2007-06-05

I think that this phrase from Marry Poppins is the best to describe the amazing recording. LuPone is the Best Evita, hand down. She does this role with a flair, but not so much flair that it loses it's meaning. Mandy Papkin (The Secret Garden (1991 Original Broadway Cast)) Is a Phenominal Che and really does what Antonio left off. He adds a sarcastic and mean flair with his songs so as to insite that his character is not really that nice and slightly does not like Evita. Infact at one point he is actually asked by Evita to leave toi just get out of her life.
The Orchestrations are phenominal. evan though I do prefer the Movie Orchestrations over this one, what the Orch. lack the singing carries on. There is only one song that I think is really missing from this grouping and that is "The Lady's Got Potential". That song was wisely added to the movie.
Another pro for this version is the fact that the original show is intact. In the movie, due to Argentinan sencorship, some of the sarcasim and the mockery of Evita's life was cut. Unfortunately this made Evita look almost like a saint. The Part were it is really prevelent was in the song "Santa Evita" Where Che blandantly tells Evita some of her faults. The Montage is also woth the $30 bucks it is outstanding. Buy this alvum evan if you have to sell your house to get it it is definately worth it. every Single Cent. :)

4 out of 5 stars Lapone Vs Madonna.......2007-01-26

Too bad Lapone criticized Madonna's voice. I bought this cd since Lapone was supposed to have been the "ultimate Evita". Yes, Lapone has more of a broadway bounce, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed Madonna's version. Same for Bandaris. The man who sings in the original broadway version is certainly more operatic, but Bandaris I think is more manly, which is part of the character.
Anyway, I have both cd's and the contrast is great and they're both excellent cd's.

5 out of 5 stars The movie is good but..........2007-01-20

While the movie version of "Evita" is indeed wonderful, one cannot forget the marvelous must have of the INCREDIBLE Original Broadway Cast Recording. For one thing, the singing is beyond outstanding. Mandy Patinkin has always been a favorite of mine, as has Patty LuPone.

This was probably one of the very first smash hit musicals that Andrew Lloyd Webber composed.

I saw the movie and must admit that this version (even though it is only a recording) hands down is by far the superior of the two. It's the gorgeous singing that got me hooked to this beautiful score.

If you are a fan of musicals, I highly recommend this to you. I even recommend it if you are only a fan of Mandy Patinkin--you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars BUY this one, NOT the Madonna version.......2006-10-18

This is a great Broadway soundtrack. Mandy Patinkin has an amazing voice, and the singing is amazing. Don't bother with the pathetic movie version.

5 out of 5 stars MANDY PATINKEN IS BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-10-01

OMG! Who knew he could sing?? High Flying adored is one of the best (most beautiful) songs on the album! I can't imagine how people can say Antonio Bandaras is better, just because he has a Spanish accent (i haven't seen the movie, though). I also LOVE LuPone in Rainbow High! Especially this part:

"I'm their savior! That's what they call me. So Lauren Bacall me. Anything goes. To make me fantastic, I have to be rainbow high in magical colors...
I also the dressers in that song.

"Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure! Dress! Voice! Style!
Movement! Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour! Face!
Diamonds! Excitement! Image!

Lumet and Jones had experience and success when they picked up this project - unfortunately neither had experience or success with adapting a broadway musical to the silverscreen - and it shows - quincy jones obliterated a perfect score with meaningless dribble and sidney lumet miscast and misdirected the rest - what a shame - the original score (music and lyrics) by charlie smalls was perfect, melodic, lyrical & memorable - mr. smalls should have told mr. jones to, "play it the way i wrote it!" - all melody is lost, the lyrics are half sung half spoken in some overacted and oddball interpretations - it's a visual mess with a cheesy studio feel - buy the Original Broadway Soundtrack to get a real sense of the music and story - buy tickets to a local production - just don't waste your money on this junk of an adaptation - poor charlie smalls...

4 out of 5 stars Love this CD.......2007-07-05

Had this when it came out on LP--didn't even know it was ON cd til just now, and I ordered it. Take it for what it is, a timepiece from the period. The Bee Gees in the mid to late 70's were as dominant as the Beatles were in the 60's. PS- CHICAGO was offered the "Got To Get You" song and passed.

5 out of 5 stars to those disco freaks that love cheesy films!.......2007-04-19

Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of Peter Frampton and the Brothers Gibb and I'm an even BIGGER fan of cheesy films. I've been hunting down this soundtrack on CD since wearing out the VHS I checked out from the library. After having the DVD fall on my foot at my local Walgreen's (and watching it 7 times over 3 days), I'm now starting my search again for the awesome soundtrack. I'm a bit miffed that the tracks are out of order, but it's no big deal. If you love Frampton's guitar work, the BeeGee's vocals, and a cheesy film from '78 to boot, then by all means, get it. For those haters that don't like disco-fied Beatles covers, well, all I can say to them is pfft (oh, and not buy it if they're going to just fuss and cuss about how it's not 'right').

4 out of 5 stars Why would you buy it then?.......2007-03-20

Looking at the previous review I wonder...Did you see the movie? if you did then you heard all the tracks before buying the cd. Yes the movie was corny and campy...and I'm glad it didn't turn out to be like Xanadu (largly due to the fact that no one had to act, they just sang the parts) but it still leads me to wonder why would you buy the soundtrack to a movie you felt like was a flop? I enjoyed the music therefore I will most likely buy this cd. I enjoyed the movie as well (sucker for the Bee Gees)...

4 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-03-17

This sound track from the movie is a very good remake of the Beatles tunes. I enjoyed the movie back years ago and enjoy the music again now...

Album Description

Black Sabbath-the Black Sabbath, the original lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, four childhood friends from the north of England-grew out of the U.K's late-60s blues/hard rock scene, which also included Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer, and other greats. Sabbath's sweeping and masterful metamorphosis away from that tradition spawned heavy metal music, inventing the template for everything that would follow. With crushing rhythms, torpedo riffs, haunting songs, and Ozzy's other-worldly vocals, the band conjured a dark, menacing, and resonant sound that reverberates still.

2 out of 5 stars Buy a different Black Sabbath Complilation.......2007-07-04

For some reason on this best of album they decided to shorten the song Iron Man. Iron Man is a great song and deserves to be heard in its complete form. Who ever was in charge of putting this cd together has just lost themselves a huge amount of sales buy editing one of Sabbath's most well known songs.

I recommend this album
We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll

2 out of 5 stars love ozzy and sabbath..........2007-06-09

but c'mon why did they edit iron man? did they run out of space (only reasonable answer) but why iron man. why not war pigs, (love that song but
has a VERY long instramental part)and that why i rate 2 stars. could have had
5 stars but sabbath, you f%$#ed up REAL bad. :(

3 out of 5 stars Good but unneccessary!.......2007-04-30

Greatest Hits 1970-1978 is a single disc overview of Ozzy Osbourne's years in Black Sabbath. While it is full of Sabbath classics like Paranoid, Sweat Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and War Pigs, there is really no need for this complation to exist! First of all the double disc set Symptom of the Universe is available. Secondly there is already a single disc Sabbath complation out there "We Sold Our Soul for Rock n Roll", which I would recommend over Greatest Hits 1970-1978 if you are only wanting a single cd instead of the two disc Symptom of the Universe.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-01

I got this for Christmas last year and loved it. I still do. It has some of the best Sabbath songs on there, but I only have two real questions:
1. Why is Iron Man edited? It's still good, but come on.
2.Where's Johnny Blae? Fairies Wear Boots?

Apart from those, this is a near-perfect CD. It also has a little pamphlet thingy, that talks about the history of Black Sabbath. All in all, great.

2 out of 5 stars 'BEST OF' is misleading.......2007-02-24

The edit/fade of version of IRON MAN makes no sense to me at all. It's one of their best and most beloved and well known songs and should have been included in its full length version, even if it meant leaving off one of their later, lesser songs. Do yourself a favor and skip this disc and try to buy the remastered versions of PARANOID and MASTER OF REALITY from the Amazon UK site. I would recommend you stay away from any Black Sabbath (or Ozzy disc solo for that matter) that list Sharon Osburne anywhere in the credits. She has done nothing but try to rewrite the history the this great band....what a shame!

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and just plain fun.......2007-03-08

Saw the Broadway Revue many years ago on Broadway. Always loved the moving music. Reordered the CD so I could put it on my ipod. Some songs are soulful, like "Black and Blue", but most are just plain fun and funny, like "Your feets too big". This should be brought back to Broadway now!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-08-25

Very few revue shows are as satisfying as this one. I'm obsessed with the finale right now; can't get enough of it! The cast is stellar, and it's very obvious that each song is telling its own story. What makes it outstanding are the arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Great, Late Nell Carter.......2006-07-30

What a shame that Nell Carter didn't do more theater or sing more than she did. I would have loved to have seen and heard her do more. An incredible voice. How sad that she passed so young. I had the pleasure of meeting her and talking with her at length in 1984, and she was as warm and charming as could be. A lovely woman.

5 out of 5 stars Best Broadway musical of 1978 - hand down!!!.......2006-07-28

Fans of Fats Waller should all have this in their collection. The night I went to see the show was so close to what is on the CD - it's amazing. This CD allows me to re-live that magical evening.

It was hard to find this CD. I looked high and low in my hometown, and am glad that Amazon had it to offer. Thanks to Amazon for having what some consider "out of the way" items for us 'finicky' consumers.

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.
