The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott WilsonCustomer Reviews:

Any listener should not be remiss about the cumbersome nature of the soundtrack. One can skip over easily the songs they don't like. Not like the ol' turntable vinyl where that convenience was not there. Let's face it, too much Sha-Na-Na is too much Sha-Na-Na.
Overall, it's a great buy for the asking price for those who remember. A versatile Travolta and Newton-John strutted their stuff in a time they could do no wrong. And contributions by Franki Valli, Channing and Avalon make this a good listen.
A feel-good, sing-along soundtrack.......2007-04-14
Grease consists of many talented actors and actresses, most of whom could sing as well as they could act. Therefore, each song -- including numerous solos by John Travolta, Oliva Newton-John and Stockard Channing -- is a treat to listen to.
If I were only allowed to bring one CD to the proverbial deserted island, Grease would probably be it! This is one purchase that will pay off, time and time again.

Greatest-hits collections often deprive the listener of the chance to experience an artist's true scope of talent. Not so with Steve Miller--his strength has always been more in crafting an occasional blast of FM-radio heaven rather than a dozen solid album tracks. Greatest Hits 1974-78 chronicles the best singles from Miller's most successful years, after he veered from Haight-Ashbury bluesy trippiness to more accessible blues-based pop-rock. There are the slippery grooves of "The Joker" and "Fly Like an Eagle," and there's the air-guitar-beckoning riff rock of "Take the Money and Run," "Jungle Love," "Rock n'Me," and "Jet Airliner." Don't expect groundbreaking art, expect references to the "pompatus of love" and instant gratification. Requisite listening at the classic-rock keg party. --Neal WeissCustomer Reviews:

Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-21
This is a rather fine example of what a greatest hits CD should be. A bunch of really good songs with not much in the way of "filler".
Tracks 1,2,3,4,8,9 & 11 are the popular classics you'll know from the radio. (Tracks 6,12 & 13 aren't that popular, but they grow on you). So you get $7 worth of essential tracks for the current Amazon price of $8. Not bad. (You can get each of these songs individually from iTunes and save yourself $1). Two other good songs from Steve Miller, that fall outside the 1974-1978 range, are "Abracadabra" and "Living in the USA". Don't go and pay $14 for the "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD just to get these two additional songs. I'd buy each of them on iTunes for $1, if available.
Hope this helps.

Good but Outdated Compilation.......2007-03-12
Swingtown- It begins with a fade-in. The bassline we hear becomes the backbone of the song. Harmonies fill the song, as do catchy melodies. An excellent way to kick off the compilation.
Jungle Love- A classic. Just thinking about "Jungle Love" is driving me crazy.
Take the Money and Run- A short little gem that's one my favourite SMB tracks. The off-kilter drum intro is great, as is the zany guitar work. The lyrics themselves tell the story of a robbing couple and the sheriff who's out to get them. Goofy fun all around.
Rock 'N Me- "Keep on 'a rockin' me baby" says it all. Memorable guitar riff, too.
Serenade- Not the best song, but good by most standards.
True Fine Love- Cute ballad with a nice little swing to it.
The Stake- A slow-burning pop classic.
The Joker- This is from 1973, so its inclusion is dubious. But guess what? The song is one of SMB's most enduring and pivotal tracks. If "Maurice" followed by a guitar-made whistling-like sound doesn't ring a bell, there's something wrong with you.
Fly Like an Eagle- A mellow paean to freedom embossed in some fine electronic atomospherics. One SMB's other key songs.
Threshold- Not really a song at all. It's an intro to...
Jet Airliner- Pop rock about being a celebrity. Great chorus.
Dance, Dance, Dance- More country than anything else. Good thing they stuck it at the end, because I always skip this cold fish.
Winter Time- Doesn't do anything for me.
Wild Mountain Honey- Dull.
Now, as you might've noted, a great many of these tracks garnered quite a bit of praise from me. That's because the music itself is quite awesome. However, this set does have some weaknesses:
*Nothing (aside from "The Joker") outside the 74-78 range. That means you don't get any of SMB's early classics or the early 80s cheesball "Abracadabra" track.
*Original issue CD, which means the sound quality is rather low.
*Not a lot of songs. Given that this compilation was originally released on an LP, we can understand why we don't get that much music.
*Better compilations are out there. "Young Hearts" offers more songs than this, and the sound is better. BUT,if you're looking for a concise overview of hits, you might be interested in this one. If you down mind less tracks and low audio quality, this compilation will work for you. It'll probably cost you less, too.
Overall, this compilation was great for its time. But in this day and age, it seems rather outdated. Fantastic tunes, though!

One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Black Sabbath, in my opinion created some of the most brilliant songs, ever! True music enthusiast should at least own their first 4 albums.
For the people thinking the "Black Box" is a rip off, think about it. You get the first 8 Black Sabbath CDs, that's $80+ if you get them individually, (and the ones in the box set are remastered too), and a sexy velvet hardcovered biography of the history of Black Sabbath, all inside a cool box, for around $60. I don't see how this is a rip off...

The Best That I Could Do collects the singles that led John Mellencamp into the radio/jukebox pantheon he celebrated in "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." and "Cherry Bomb." While albums such as American Fool, Uh Huh, and Scarecrow held Top 10 spots for months, their spinoff hits made this Hoosier disciple of Jagger, J.B., and Iggy into something like a Reagan-era John Fogerty: not only were "Pink Houses," "Paper in Fire," and "Crumblin' Down" wise (and wiseacre) dispatches from an America where it wasn't always morning, they could fill a dance floor and get you pounding the dashboard on the way home. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

This is another one of those "best of" compilations. If you're new to John or just want to hear the hits (up until 1988), this is a good CD to get. If you'd like to hear what John is really about, I think you should get the individual albums. Although all the songs here are greats, it's almost too skimpy of a collection to fully appreciate John's great music. Still, it's good fun to have all the hits in one place for easy listening convenience, and I do recommend it.

Amazon.com essential recording
Evita was Andrew Lloyd Webber's last show with Tim Rice before he went on to projects with less interesting collaborators, so it's no surprise that it remains his most consistently involving and rewarding work. Loosely based on the life of Eva Peron, the charismatic wife of post-World War II Argentine president Juan Peron, Rice's compelling story of one woman's rise from poverty to power is complemented by Lloyd Webber's colorful music as propelled by vigorous Latin rhythms. The showstopper, of course, is "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," but the score is full of gems, including "On This Night of a Thousand Stars," "Oh, What a Circus," and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall." Headlining the 1978 Broadway cast, Patti LuPone is fabulous in the title role, showcasing her big voice and brash egotism in the role she was born to play. Mandy Patinkin is Che, the Greek-chorus character commenting on and criticizing the Perons, and his tenor is sweet on the ballads and powerful on the driving numbers. LuPone and Patinkin made their names with Evita (and took home well-deserved Tonys), but it's the third principal, Bob Gunton, who elevates this cast to the stratosphere. As Peron--a role often filled by a nonsinger--Gunton inflects his strong voice with both menace and sensitivity. Forget the movie; this is the definitive version of this score, and an essential cast recording. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

The Orchestrations are phenominal. evan though I do prefer the Movie Orchestrations over this one, what the Orch. lack the singing carries on. There is only one song that I think is really missing from this grouping and that is "The Lady's Got Potential". That song was wisely added to the movie.
Another pro for this version is the fact that the original show is intact. In the movie, due to Argentinan sencorship, some of the sarcasim and the mockery of Evita's life was cut. Unfortunately this made Evita look almost like a saint. The Part were it is really prevelent was in the song "Santa Evita" Where Che blandantly tells Evita some of her faults. The Montage is also woth the $30 bucks it is outstanding. Buy this alvum evan if you have to sell your house to get it it is definately worth it. every Single Cent. :)

This was probably one of the very first smash hit musicals that Andrew Lloyd Webber composed.
I saw the movie and must admit that this version (even though it is only a recording) hands down is by far the superior of the two. It's the gorgeous singing that got me hooked to this beautiful score.
If you are a fan of musicals, I highly recommend this to you. I even recommend it if you are only a fan of Mandy Patinkin--you won't regret it!

Album Description
Black Sabbath-the Black Sabbath, the original lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, four childhood friends from the north of England-grew out of the U.K's late-60s blues/hard rock scene, which also included Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer, and other greats. Sabbath's sweeping and masterful metamorphosis away from that tradition spawned heavy metal music, inventing the template for everything that would follow. With crushing rhythms, torpedo riffs, haunting songs, and Ozzy's other-worldly vocals, the band conjured a dark, menacing, and resonant sound that reverberates still.Customer Reviews:

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.
All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.
