Back in the 1990s, when Mandy Moore was still trying to outmaneuver fellow junior glamazons Britney, Jessica, and Christina up the pop charts, the best song she was able to pull from her bag of tricks was "Candy," a tune that was way more Twizzler than Starburst. Cut to 2007: Moore, a respected Hollywood actress (never mind the Diane Keaton dud Because I Said So), has made a record that reflects the artist that--against some heavy odds--she's become. Wild Hope, co-written with the cred-conferring team of Rachael Yamagata, Lori McKenna, and the Weepies, should earn her a spot on adult-alternative radio alongside format regulars Dar Williams, Sarah McLachlan, and Jonatha Brooke. Its songs, like the achy "Gardenia," sung over a gently plunked piano, aim at confession and clarity: "I'm the one who likes to make love on the floor," the chorus reminds a vacant-eyed lover. Earlier, on first single "Extraordinary," Moore pours her rich, country-rubbed, Anna Nalick-like vocals into self-scrutiny and renewal: "I was a starling, nobody's darling/Now I'm ready to be extraordinary," she sings. Talent will be Moore's ticket to the transformation she's going for--no wild hoping necessary. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, better than expected........2007-07-20

I have never heard any of Mandy Moore's previous work, as it is not something that appeals to me. I bought this on lark, I heard part of a song, and figured I'd try it out. I am very happy to say that it is an awesome CD! I like every song on the album! It's got a folky richness that makes you want to listen to the CD on repeat! GIve it a shot, I love that I did!

5 out of 5 stars Moore Delivers the Whole Package.......2007-07-19

I have been a fan of Mandy Moore for over five years, since I found a used copy of her 2001 self-titled album. I was impressed even then, because despite the schlock that was on the radio and the MTv at the time, Moore was singing good rock and pop songs that rose above the silly gimmicks of her contemporaries. I was never sure, however, that Mandy was as great as I imagined she could be: I never saw her perform live, her success has been marginal if it can even be called success. There had to be an explanation for that.

However, I saw her sing in Boston three days ago and she exceeded my expectations. Moore is an incomparably skilled vocalist. She covers a range that Kelly Clarkson would certainly have trouble with, and her style is distinctive, not relying on genre-specific cliches. That was just with a guitar and piano player accompanying her. Then I heard her album. It's awesome: even Coverage pales in comparison, as far as vocals go. The thing that blows me away is once I get past the skilled vocals and the excellent production and playing, the lyrics are brilliant! I hope Moore's celebrity ex-boyfriends are music-lovers, as they should be proud to have inspired such great music.

As a counter-example, I still listen to 10,000 Maniacs on a regular basis; they are one of my favorite bands. However, after a while I get bored of Natalie Merchant's singing, and fall back on enjoying the sound of the drums and listening to the lyrics. Even though I've listened to Wild Hope fifteen times in the past three days, I haven't fallen back on the instrumentation yet.

Buy this album: if you love good music, you will be well-rewarded. I feel great knowing that when Moore puts on a full show, I will get to hear her sing most of these songs and others with her powerful vocals, and she will deliver. She has taste and she has skills and it all shows.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-15

Mandy Moore totally shocked me with this album! It is full of songs I can relate to and sing along with. She has definetly moved on from the pop world, where you make music that sells, not what makes you happy. I recommend this album to anyone looking for easy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Mandy is not tabloid fodder, just special.......2007-07-13

I loved reading the excellent reviews for Wild Hope. While I respected Mandy for releasing "Coverage", I am old enough to have heard many of those original songs repeatedly - and wasn't crazy about hearing Mandy sing them. I knew she was capable of an album like Wild Hope. I waited a long time. Finally!! I am watching and listening to her grow up, it is very cool. Her recent life experiences, particularly in the romantic realm, have clearly become part of her music. I love the sound, love the sincerity. I have listened to my CD many, many times, and will continue. Go Mandy!

5 out of 5 stars Wow This is Mandy Moore?.......2007-07-13

When I first listened to this album through my Zune subscription I was like uh..Who is this? Is this album mislabeled? No way this could be the girl who was prancing around singing candy singing about making love on the floor..Well, yes to to my surprise it was her and I am loving it. Mandy has truly grown up and her music shows it. I love this new her and I hope there is lots and lots to come. I love the album its my favorite this year along with Kelly Clarkson's latest effort.

One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2005-11-13

One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09

I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.

5 out of 5 stars not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14

This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

Album Description

"Remember Beck before his career devolved into magazine-pleasing genre exercises? These guys have the same bent, rustic perspective on popcraft, and a heap of ambition." -- Pitchfork "A chewy mash-up of groovy, Syd Barrett-y quirkiness and Elephant Six-style songsmithing ... strangely, lucidly polished." -- CMJ "A dense but playful collage of indie rock, folk, and junkyard aesthetic electronic music. It's messy and loose and joyful and full of shouts and lo-fi drums." -- Skyscraper

Teeming Portland-based musical clan Blitzen Trapper is pleased to announce the arrival of its third brood of offspring--songs, that is--in the shape of an album called Wild Mountain Nation. Brought forth in a spasm of creative mania, Nation is rough-hewn but lush, crackling (sometimes audibly) with a weird and lucid energy. From outer space to down on the farm, campfire sing-along to atonal dystopia, the new album is a raucous constellation of favorite souvenirs from the Trapper's gamut-running musical adventures. As usual, the group's trusty fourtrack was used to capture the "souls" of the songs, which were then buried in a rich soil of sweat and love so that in due time a delicious, varied harvest of fresh music was drooping from the vine. Taste it--it's good! A sextet of old friends whose youths were spent wandering the hoary forests and high desert plateau of the Pacific Northwest, Blitzen Trapper has long been a stalwart of the Portland music community, rocking audiences of all ages, socioeconomic groups, and species with its unique sonic blend of Zane Grey, Darjeeling tea, candy wrappers, and Choose Your Own Adventure. Though you may mistake the members for can collectors or immigrant day laborers, the group loves you very much and promises to slave away at the office to keep Wild Mountain Nation and the other kids well fed and tastefully attired.

4 out of 5 stars Pavement + Sergio Leone + early Beck = Blitzen.......2007-07-01

This record is a fun mixing of styles. There is hard rock, dance, alt-country, dance, and more. This mixed bag works on almost every track, each being engaging and unpredictable. If you like unpredictable indie-rock then this record is for you. Kudos to the band.

A note on the mastering: Like virtually all new rock records, this one is mastered way too loud. It is still listenable however. The damage done by the audio engineer is not excessive, it's tolerable. I wish bands would insist on proper mastering. it would benefit them as a properly mastered record is more likely to produce an emotional reaction in the listener. And thats how you get loyal fans, by touching people on an emotional level.

Amazon.com essential recording

All the voices in Tom Waits' head come out on this CD: the growler (of course), the crooner, the preacher, the screecher, and the Vegas cheese ball. The instrumentation is equally eclectic. (Yep, that's Waits himself playing the "rooster" on the album's best song, "I'll Be Gone.") More memorable moments: "Innocent When You Dream" (both times), the vocal howling at the end of "Blow Wind Blow," and the lovely coughing fit after "I'll Take New York." Frank's Wild Years is the musical remains of a theatrical collaboration between Waits and Kathleen Brennan, originally staged in 1986. It contains nuggets of important practical advice, sure--"never drive a car when you're dead" (from "Telephone Call from Istanbul")--but mostly these songs are fantasy freaks. Frank's is big-time dreamer. It's a dreamy album. Sweet dreams. --Dan Leone

3 out of 5 stars Tom Waits is Tom Waits.......2007-05-20

Tom Waits has one sound and is at least consistent for sticking to it. If you listen to more than one Waits's album, then you have heard it all before. His sound, unique and unforgettably that of an intense hang-over from cheap liquor, sticks with the listener long after the music ends.

4 out of 5 stars four and one half stars for another waits jewel........2007-02-26

if you don't already have this cd, i want to know why? who told you you don't need this? did your old lady say you don't need this? did she wake up with a wild hair up her behind and say something like, "Leroy, we already have sooo many cds!" well, don't listen to your old lady. you need this. if you don't have this cd, you definitely need it. you're gonna be comin home from work and sittin down to drink a few forties and you're gonna need somethin just right to listen to. and this is the cd that is just right for that moment. so forget what the old lady says, get this cd now.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Waits goes wild... and this is good.......2007-02-15

What can I say ? One of the best, in one of his best works. Seems like being married to an actress influenced Waits' theatrical point of view. It IS indeed a play. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Ecclectic doesn't even begin to describe it.......2007-01-02

FRANK'S WILD YEARS (title taken from a SWORDFISHTROMBONES tune) is a record of sound. No kiddin' Sherlock, you say; it's a music record. Please note, I didn't say it was a record of "music." I mean, yes, this is a musical record--but the emphasis, as with it's two predecessors SWORDFISHTROMBONES and RAIN DOGS, it upon sonic diversity.

I guess WILD YEARS is a polka record. It does tell the story of a young accordian player from the butt-end of nowhere ("Rainville. Hardly ever did, though. Rain, that is. It was nowhere.") bent on making the big time ("I'm goin' straight up to the top, oh yeah, up where the air is fresh and clean"). He hits a lot of potholes along the way ("It's more than rain that falls on our parade tonight"), eventually crashing and burning ("It was a train that took me away from here/But a train can't bring me home"). And we are just listeners along for the ride, reveling in Waits's ever-expanding experimentation with what all he can do with a few instruments, some lyrics, and his haunting, gravelly voice.

5 out of 5 stars if ever you are blue..........2006-10-20

...turn to tom waits. all the problems in yourlife, tom will be right there, all you need to do is listen. human's are social creatures, tom waits is the genius mind, the friend and storyteller, who will make you feel better because you'll be able to relate to the music and stories he tells. tom understands that sadness is just another emotion in life that everyone needs to deal with. and he touches upon this, becomes your shoulder to cry on, all you need is his lyrics and music. this is a very melancholy album. but i guarantee if you're blue, start singing along to "innocent when you dream". shout it! it's a victory song. listen to the lyrics of "more than rain". this heals the wounded soul.

i don't review many things any more. i don't want to be critical, just way too much negative energy. don't trust my opinions and formulate your own. if anything, trust tom. he's got what will make you feel better.

These albums mark nothing less than a watershed in the Beach Boys' and Brian Wilson's careers. Fresh from the artistic triumph of Pet Sounds and the landmark single "Good Vibrations," Wilson began work on Smile, a project that would become a music fan's Rashomon: pop's most (in)famous unreleased album; artistic Waterloo for Wilson; near career-ruination for the band. Smile seemed an attempt to expand on the jigsaw session methodology Wilson had applied to "Vibrations." What went wrong has been debated for decades, but Smiley Smile was the album that followed in the summer of '67--a "bunt instead of a home run," as Carl Wilson admitted. Bookended by the glories of the "Vibrations" single and its truncated follow-up, "Heroes and Villains," Smiley can seem an exercise in creative schizophrenia. There's an earthy quality to remakes of Smile tracks "Wind Chimes," "Vegetables," and "Wonderful," while Wilson's "Fall Breaks," "Little Pad," and "Whistle In" underscore his playful, off-center instincts. But this album also anticipated the roots-conscious retrenchment that the Beatles and Bob Dylan would undertake at the end of the '60s.

Wild Honey has taken its place as a cult fave among fans, and rightly so. Its surprising R&B influences (epitomized by the buoyant title track, "Darlin'," and "Here Comes the Night") were not only a brave turn for a band just then at a low ebb, but a prescient pointer to the black music explosion of the early '70s. This great twofer edition includes some of the series' best tracks: a near seven-minute "in progress" suite of "Good Vibrations" outtakes as well as a complete early version; the odd, Smile-era B-side "You're Welcome"; a beautiful live rehearsal rendition of the a cappella showcase "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring"; and another suite of edited session takes for the unreleased standout "Can't Wait Too Long." -Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars An Elegantly Flawed Disc.......2007-05-22

I feel that this grouping of albums is a blessing in that you can get two important but slightly flawed albums of Tehe Beach Boys for a low price. The music is unbelievable especially Smiley Smile. It is exhilirating to hear Brian Wilson's genius in this stripped-down form. What is there just teases you as to what it would have been if all the problems of Smile hadn't occured. The second half, Wild Honey, is just fun Beach Boys, no psychedelia at all, just fun. It's a great summer album all together, the first half for when your blazing, the second for when your driving around in the hot summer air. I recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Surfing, Hello God !.......2006-07-16

Smiley Smile - The "released" version of Smile is here in a smaller scale. If you ever wanted to hear what the Beach Boys would sound like on Hashish and laying on their backs while singing harmony stoned, get this, it's really good.
Wild Honey - White soul before there was white soul and 10 years before Hall & Oates and the white Philly soul movement, The Beach Boys did it in 1967.

3 out of 5 stars Smiley Smile 2 stars - Wld Honey 4 stars.......2005-11-16

Smiley Smile simply is the moment when the Beach Boys died. It maybe impossible to imagine now, but up to 1966 the Beach Boys were as respected as artists as the Beatles. Smiley Smile is a rushed album, with practically no instrumentation whatsoever and many under-rehearsed vocals, except for Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villians. If Capitol ever releases a Smile box set as they promised, Smiley Smile will be then send to oblivion, in the hall of shame where it belongs. The world never took the beach boys seriously after that. Wild Honey is actually a very good album, not better than Pet Sounds or Smile, but different than anything they ever did before. Some of the songs and arrangements are totally Brian Wilson at his best. Some of the 'soul' vocals I find difficult to digest and I miss the Beach boys blend on the songs. The extra tracks on the album are ESSENTIAL to any serious beach boys fan, so, if you are, you need this album.

5 out of 5 stars Smiley Smile- 4 Stars Wild Honey- 5 Stars.......2005-08-23

Letting go of the "what could have beens" with Smile hasn't been easy for many Beach Boys fans- yet it tarnishes a lot of what they did afterwards. There have been many bands that have had aborted projects- some songs found life in other projects. In the progression of The Beach Boys circa 1966-67 there's Pet Sounds, the "Good Vibrations" single, Smiley Smile, and then Wild Honey. There was a time when I might I have thought that Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were steps back artistically; especially when I would put myself to wondering about the aborted Smile project; but in my maturity the steps back artistically have become steps forward humanly. The proceeding albums had less flair and "ambition"; the staple became more and more friendly and subtle- especially when you include the wonderful Friends album.

The enormous ambition that was so much the core of Brian Wilson's progress had turned into personal flights of fancy. The remnants of this, Smile, was rerecorded and turned into Smiley Smile. Parts spooky and haunting, parts comical and silly, the music is complex yet at times astonishingly simple- it was an exorcism and slow return to being the Beach Boys. One major change that started occurring during the recording of this album is that the Beach Boys started recording the music themselves without the assistance of the Wrecking Crew (a famous group of LA session musicians).

Although I have preferred the "Smile" versions of Wonderful, Vegetables, Wind Chimes they are not without plenty of charm. She's Going Bald and Little Pad are fun ditties that have some experimental elements. Although this is a personal estimation I think some of the songs could be very disregarded by the most serious fans such as Fall Breaks Back Into Winter and Getting' Hungry.

Within the same year they had switched tracks to a much more earthy less psychedelic sound. The result is the highly enjoyable Wild Honey. This is a truly great album by the Beach Boys- this was their back to basics album with a new found interest in R&B. It was a group effort on many levels- the song writing was very good and the performances had a passion and honesty that I have found on Pet Sounds without the self indulgence. Songs like Darlin', Wild Honey, Here Comes The Night and Aren't You Glad are on my list of top Beach Boys songs. The Stevie Wonder cover I Was Made To Love Her is actually a surprisingly good cover; Carl sounds quite soulful.

Finally I have to mention Let The Wind Blow- a touching reminder of the power of love- the deepest and most important thing in the world. The sentiment came during a time when many were writing protest songs about everything that was wrong with the world. The simplicity of the desire to give and feel love to one special person in his life resonates so strongly in contrast to the protests and criticisms of inhumanity. The song itself is so simple that it's easy to past right by it but with the feeling of the song hits you it is a sincere plea for more love.

The bonus tracks a cool- there is an amazing live recording from another aborted album; Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring is a cover of a Four Freshmen song that harkens back to Brian's youth. There's also a good version of Can't Wait Too Long once again from the Smile sessions.

I highly recommend these albums. They come as a twofer but both albums are remarkably short; many albums back then clocked in at 40 minutes long because of the time constraints of records-- Wild Honey is only 23 minutes long!)
Also check out Sunflower, Friends, Holland, and Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blues (if you can find it) all top notch albums.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome CD!.......2005-08-22

Smiley Smile is a terrific album, and definitely should rank among the most underrated, overlooked masterpieces of the last 200 years.

Sure, it wasn't "SMiLE", but it stands alone as a great work of art with its own merits. The songs, "Heroes and Villains", "Good Vibrations", and the several rare bonus tracks make the CD well worth buying, yet the CD offers much more than that.

If you like offbeat, eclectic songs, you will love Smiley Smile. This stuff is far wackier and stranger than anything the Beatles, Pink Floyd, or anyone else was doing at the time, or really since. But the songs aren't just strange and mystifying; they're also quite beautiful and enchanting.

The vocal harmony work on Smiley Smile is among the best the group ever did. The instrumentation is sparse on some songs, and deliciously rich and intricate on others. The album is an amazing tapestry of wild sound effects, beautiful vocals, haunting instrumentation, gorgeous melodies, psychedelic clownery, and genius concepts.

I could go on and on about Smiley Smile. It's one of my personal favorite albums and I never get tired of listening to it. But Smiley Smile is only half (in volume) of what the CD offers. I don't have much to say about Wild Honey other than there are several good songs on it, and it's a solid album with a consistent sound. The production is minimal as is most of the instrumentation. Overall, it's a good album worth owning if you like the Beach Boys.

The bonus tracks on this disc are just amazing. You get to hear an alternate version of Heroes and Villains often referred to as the "Cantina" version, and some of the tracking sessions for Good Vibrations, which is really quite cool. There's also a wonderful a capella song, originally from the 4 Freshman, that the Boys do with incredible grace and remarkable beauty. "Can't Wait Too Long" is apparently a SMiLE-era outtake that was never used, but it's hard to see why; it's a great song.

Basically, if you are a Beach Boys enthusiast and really like Brian's experimental side, you must get this CD. These Capitol "two-fers" are a great value, and this one in particular is a real gem.

This grandly conceived two-disc collection of Hollywood and television Western themes showcases the City of Prague Philharmonic's indefatigable passion for rehashing great works from composers like Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, and John Williams. But listeners less prone to swoon over highbrow symphonic grandeur may respond with a yawn. Yes, the collection is a wonderful reference source, with a sweeping chronology from John Ford's Stagecoach to Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp. And the pieces are competently executed, with John Barry's contribution among the highlights. But the concert-hall acoustics--with little to no studio artifice--have a dulling effect. Those with access to the Dolby Surround may detect a rewarding nuance or two, but for others with fewer audiophile idiosyncrasies, the mood may be stuffy and uninspired. --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western music themes.......2007-05-15

This is the best collection of Western Movie themes I've heard. All the great ones are here including the incomparable Ennio Moriconne's. There is one defect of manufacture on the second DVD which has still not been corrected. (I have 2 copies due to borrowing by offspring.)

5 out of 5 stars Best Classic Western Music.......2007-01-09

Not only does this CD bring back memories of favorite western movies, it's also just good music. I listen to them at work along with it's companion "Way Out West", at home while I'm working, and in my car. They go with me everywhere. This was definitly one of my better purchases.

3 out of 5 stars Great Western Themes.......2006-03-28

The orchestra generally gives a fine treatment to the themes they perform but I do not agree with their selection. Soundtrack themes from Glory, Gettysburg and The Last of the Mohicans are not, to me, true westerns. Yet they miss Blazing Saddles and "Do Not Foresake Me" from High Noon.

5 out of 5 stars Wandering Around the West.......2005-11-02

I bought this CD for a family trip to Montana hoping for some good background music as we drove through mountains & Indian reservations. My whole family loved it. It is very evocative of a different era. Now that we're home I still listen to it. There is a great selection and the arrangements are well done.

5 out of 5 stars Performance and sound Quality.......2005-06-16

I disagree With anyone who says the sound quality is not good on The Wild West. I have a high end all tube system and this cd is one of my test cd's when someone wants to here my system. It is one of the best produced cd's I've ever heard and the performances are masterful too. We listened to this cd on my dealer's $60,000 solid state system and it blew him away. Now he uses it as a test cd too. Also try Way Out West. It is just as good.

4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

Music in the Liquid Mind series changes little from one recording to the next--good news for contented fans of the long-running bliss-out series created by keyboardist/composer Chuck Wild. The former Missing Persons keyboardist and studio colleague of famed producer Ken Scott (David Bowie, Supertramp) has evolved into a premier space-music specialist whose relaxing, gentle soundscapes artfully evoke the softer side of the cosmos. His eighth Liquid Mind installment, subtitled Sleep, is a lovely, slo-mo spacewalk through serene, gravity-free realms that consistently yields a sustained sense of well-being and calm. Deserving of a spot at the head table with ambient music's most sophisticated sound designers, Wild creates slowly unfolding, universe-at-rest textures using few of the supplemental sonic dimensions (space winds, angelic voices) often employed by fellow stargazers Jonn Serrie and Jon Jenkins. And he sidesteps the small dramas and mysterious fractals that sometimes add a hint of uncertainty to the otherwise like-minded works of Brian Eno or Harold Budd. Happily, you'll hear no new-agey crystal bowls or plucked harps, either; just a warm, resonant, faintly classical glow skillfully designed for relaxation and peace. Pull up a cloud, lie back, and enjoy. --Terry Wood

Album Description

"Mr. Wild successfully creates a soothing and calming atmosphere which could be an excellent addition to one's nightly sleep regimen." William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. Director of Sleep Disorders and Research Center Stanford University School of Medicine

"The titles of the first seven Liquid Mind albums have honored values important to me on my life's journey. This eighth album honors the need in all of us for a healthy and regenerating rest each night. I hope you'll enjoy my music, and use it in good health." Chuck Wild

5 out of 5 stars Drift consciously into sleep without realizing it........2007-06-27

Liquid Mind music is truly universal. And while I may not be able to name which album a certain piece comes from; the music on each CD seems to encourage the feeling or state of mind named in the title. This album, Sleep, does help me drift of to sleep. The other albums, likewise, support Meditation, lifting of the Spirit, and other states of mind. Perhaps they are inter-changeable; in any event, this album's selections help me relax and prepare for sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for napping.......2007-05-18

Some new age music albums get it; some don't. I do not buy new age music to hear third rate melodies (that quickly become annoying), annoying beats and clicks, drumming, chanting, etc. I buy it to help me relax and chill out. Sometimes I use it to filter out noise from outside my home or in my office. Sometimes I use it to help me sleep. Good sleep music should lull - it shouldn't demand attention. It should draw you in enough so that you will stop fretting about your problems at work or at home but not so much that your mind is anticipating a predictable melodic pattern. Liquid Mind has figured out how to do what new age music should do. This album has gently changing tones that ease in and out, cascade, and encircle the listener. Think of it as pleasant white noise. This is definitely sleep inducing. If you feel like youa re sleep deprived but are too wired to nap, put this on your headphones and just listen. You won't be able to focus on any sound in particular - there is enough shifting to keep you from doing that. But you will find yourself being lulled into dreamland. Very good.

5 out of 5 stars Really helps put me to sleep.......2007-05-07

I have no trouble staying asleep, but for years I've struggled to fall asleep. I've used several relaxing CDs, some commercial and some I've put together myself. Most of them helped, but eventually they had less effect, so I changed to another one for a few months. I started using Liquid Mind VIII recently, and it has easily been the most effective sleep CD I've used. Most nights I'm asleep by the fourth or fifth track (15-20 minutes, which is very good for me).

Other than the obvious fact that the music is fairly nondescript and very soothing, I don't know why it works so well, but it does.

Highly recommended if you have problems falling asleep.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely makes you drowsyzzz zzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-04-21

I happened to hear this on XM Radio in the car. Oh my goodness. This is not the thing to be listening to while driving. I happened to have on the Vision (New Age music) channel and this came on in broad noon daylight as I was running some errands. Within minutes, I was as calm as a lake on a windless day and heading for nod-off time. Change the channel..but quick, make a note of the album.

I tried it (safely) at home. It has a warning; do not operate machinery or drive while listening to this cd. It does really work. I put it in the cd player in my alarm clock and put it on low before I went to bed. I think I fell asleep in 4 minutes.

The trick is the slow tempo. The music is almost complete phrases, no discernable tune but also not simply noises that sound spacey.

If you want something effective to calm yourself during yoga, to sleep to or to calm a fussy baby or put down the toddlers, this is it. Zzzzzz

5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2007-03-09

The sounds are what I think heavens angels would play for you. I love it! Relaxed me. Have to stop the cd when alarms goes off or I will over sleep. Enjoyment for the soul!

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

1 out of 5 stars Why not ZERO? .......2007-01-27

I would give this one ZERO.....absolutely waste of money. The sound quality is terrible on my Made in Japan SONY / Kenwood / Panasonic CD / MP3 Players. Also, the collection of the noise is not all that impressive, I have seen much better calming peaceful MUSIC. Do not waste money, I think it is rediculous to have a band for military, How about a band for PEACE?

5 out of 5 stars Great Military Music.......2007-01-11

The CD was just what I needed for a special memorial tribute to our service people that have passed on. The recording was clear and bright. The music selections were well performed and TAPS was especially evoking.
