5 out of 5 stars Best Ben E King compilation by far!.......2007-06-17

Here we have all the hits + the 3 big Drifters' hits when Ben was their
leadsinger. After the first Drifters success Ben received a ridiculous
500 $ "salary" and he decided he'd better be off by himself. Before
leaving in 1960 he recorded 3 more songs as leader of the Drifters
that became huge hits (Save the Last Dance, I Count the Tears and This
Magic Moment)Then as a solo singer he recorded Stand By Me in 1961 and
the rest is history. This song is considered as one of the greatest
in music history. The reason why I consider this the best compilation
ever is because of the sound quality. All songs are in full stereo and
I just don't understand why other Drifters and Ben E King compilations
are rather bad mono recordings. Hearing all these wonderful hits in
full stereo make the other compilations worthless.
Highly recommendable!

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-13

Early Rock And Roll with a mix of Blues good stuff for the ears

5 out of 5 stars Ex-Drifters lead singer made great solo music.......2005-03-30

Born Benjamin Earl Nelson but known as Ben E King by the time he achieved fame as lead singer of the Drifters, Ben did not have many big solo hits but he nevertheless made an important contribution to popular music.

This compilation includes three of his American hits as lead singer of the Drifters. All three are brilliant but the most famous is Save the last dance for me, which has been recorded by a multitude of singers in several different styles of music. It has also been translated into several languages and many great covers have been recorded in France, Germany and elsewhere.

Following the success of Save the last dance for me, Ben opted for a solo career. He had fewer hits as a solo artist than his former group had without him, but Stand by me (later to become the theme song of an eighties movie) ensures his place in pop music history as a solo singer, while his other great solo records include Spanish Harlem, Amor, Don't play that song and I who have nothing. Ben made a brief comeback in the American charts with Supernatural thing in the mid-seventies.

Ben's first (minor) UK hit, First taste of love, is also included, together with his covers of such classics as Dream lover, Moon river, It's all in the game, On the street where you live and Will you love me tomorrow.

This is a fine compilation that contains all the important solo tracks from Ben's career, plus three Drifters tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Routine.......2004-10-02

There are clearly some memorable songs on this CD but there are at least 6 tunes that are "covers" and were done originally by other artists whom you think of when you hear them. Try the CD, "Very Best of Ben E. King". Those songs belong only to him.

5 out of 5 stars What a sound!!.......2000-09-19

I have long been a Drifters fan and admired Ben E. King when he was their lead singer; but I never really appreciated his talents until I heard this album. Ben E. King is truly a soulful singer, and many of the songs on this album will have you wondering why he hasn't been more appreciated. If you like Jerry Butler, the Drifters, Jackie Wilson or Clyde McPhatter, then you will have to like this album. Wish I had found it years ago!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sampling of authentic Mariachi........2006-11-05

The selections on this recording are outstanding, as are the members of
the band who sing and play in true, exciting, Mariachi fashion. Unlike
the "Hollywood" Mariachis who seem loud and boisterous, this group is
professional and true to tradition. Fun and excellent listining.

5 out of 5 stars Good cd!.......2003-05-25

I like this cd because the songs do not mix into each other. When one song ends it stop, then start at the next song without mixing into each other.

Snap! Rhythm Is A Dancer, is the 3:49 Radio mix.

Gigi D'Agostino: I Fly With You, is the Ba Ba Ba Radio Mix 3:40.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Album Description

This eighteen-track compilation drawn from her A&M and Motown albums gives cause for pause. Clearly demonstrating her expansive vocal talent through material that ranges from pop 'n' dance grooves to soulful, heartfelt ballads, Shanice was the vanguard of the new school of teenage female R&B vocalists, with artists like Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica and even Toni Braxton following the path she laid. Shanice has been a recording artist and performer for close to fifteen years with one album on A&M, two on Motown and a 1999 set for LaFace - the Pittsburgh-born, L.A.-raised vocalist has certainly made an impact in the world of pop and R&B. Combined the Motown and A&M sets - all now out of print - have scanned more than 550,000 units.

Includes the 1991 international smash "I Love Your Smile." Not only did it become No. 2 on the pop charts and Shanice's first R&B chartopper but the song became a major global hit, with success throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and South-East Asia.

Contains eight (8) Top 40 R&B hits.

Includes three A&M singles: "(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance," a Top 50 pop and Top 10 R&B hit; "No 1/2 Steppin'," which achieved black music success without making a pop impression; and "The Way You Love Me."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2006-07-12

I like the song choice on this album. However the best song she ever performed is not on here. "It's For You" from the Meteor Man soundtrack is by far her biggest hit.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice @}->---.......2006-03-04

Shanice used to be one of my favourite female singers until she 'disappeared' at the end of the 90's. Now I hear she is back, it made me revisit her music and I remember why I loved her voice and music. Cryin, Silent Prayer and Way You Love Me are some of her best songs. She was a big talented force there for a while, and if you listen to this great compilation of her best work, you'll know why. I'm loving this again, and look forward to when I receive her new cd. In the mean time, this is fantastic stuff and something all her fans will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Collection From One Of R&B's Most Gifted Treasures.......2005-11-19

It's exciting that Shanice has her best hits and then some all compiled into this greatest hits album. She is indeed one of the most overlooked female singers in the R&B realm and she has what several overexposed female singers today lack: talent. This disc has all the goods; her hits("I Love Your Smile", "Can You Dance?", "No 1/2 Steppin'", "The Way You Love Me", "I'm Cryin'", and "Silent Prayer" to name a few)and some tunes that were never released("Do I Know You", "Just A Game", and "Never Changing Love"). Although there are a few tunes missing on this set, no fan of Shanice's music should be without this one.

1 out of 5 stars The most evil song ever written!.......2005-04-15

In the early 1990s, a singer called Shanice made a recording and a video of the most twee song ever written - "I Love Your Smile".

Hell is room with "I Love Your Smile" playing over and over again 24 hours per day. I think most nursery rhymes have more "edge" than this or anything else Shanice sang! Let's hope she has retired from music and is doing something else with her life, God bless her!

4 out of 5 stars Lyrics "...woman of color".......2004-12-31

I like Shanice. This comp CD is good value for your money. I bought it although I have all her CDs, just to get the original sound of her best on one CD. Here is a question for anyone who has an answer. Does she have a song with the line "...woman of color..."? I cannot find it on any of her CDs. When I heard a song in club in '93 I was sure it was her voice. The only words I could make out were the ones above. Drop me a note and let me know at Ftshabalala@providentbank.com.

Ok, so these types of compilations are designed by the record label to make some dough. it's a shame that that's the truth!
But lemme clear something up here. this is a pretty tight compilation from los aterciopelados. even better for the most part than the official best of compilation titled evolucion. well if this compilation would've included at least one of the new songs that's featured on evolucion then this compilation would be better period!

This is a great best of CD for the band and very much worthwhile if you're curious about their music.

    5 out of 5 stars Instrumental Legends.......2006-09-21

Several years ago we bought this great collection for my mother-in-law, who's in her 80s, and while a lot of the music was familiar to me and my husband, she knew every song. Now it's one of our favorites, too. Anyone who loves music will appreciate this. The double-disc set contains many memorable tunes, from Hugo Winterhalter's "Canadian Sunset" to Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare".

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 3 instrumental bluegrass albums.......2007-02-05

I just got into bluegrass 3 yrs ago, learned to play banjo and guitar. I went out and probably spent $200 in albums so I could learn what the songs sounded like. After buying 20 albums, this one is probably number 2 in quality. They are really top notch musicians (especially the fiddle and guitar)giving great arrangements and there are alot of "standards" on it. Highly recommended. (my favorite of all time instrumental is Tony Rice the bluegrass guitar album- the only album that beat this!) I understand there is a part two to this but I haven't heard it.

3 out of 5 stars Fantastic but not ultimate pickin'.......2006-05-25

I don't know where these guys all hail from, but the sound of this pretty enjoyable album is that of bluegrass-trained Nashille-session caliber players, for better or worse. The tunes are note for note perfect, but they don't always sounds like they are really jamming or enjoying themselves. If you've been raised on new grass or West Coast-style bluegrass (that would be me), this disk sounds a little cold, a little too fresh-out-of-the -bluegrass-conservatory. On some of the songs like Forked Deer, Foggy Mountain Special, Leather Britches, and St. Anne's Reel, this group of ultimate-ace-pickers sounds like they are enjoying themselves and letting loose. But some of the tunes just sound rotely virtuosic (Clinch Mountain Backstep, eg.) So I would recommend this disk to someone who is already a lover of this music and who wants a great chronicle of key tunes performed well, some of which are standouts, others of which sound like the musicians must be getting paid by the note. There are no doubt more soulful versions of these tunes elsewhere, but there is no doubt that these great players have their hearts and chops in the right place.

Playing Time - 67:30 -- Derived from the various Bluegrass '90s albums that the Pinecastle label released, "Ultimate Pickin'" features Jeff Autry (guitar), Wayne Benson (mandolin), Aubrey Haynie (fiddle), Scott Vestal (banjo) and Mark Schatz (bass). Rickie Simpkins also plays fiddle on half dozen cuts. Rob Ickes plays resophonic guitar on 14 of 20 tracks, and Randy Kohrs plays on the remaining six tracks. Although most of the tracks are staples of the bluegrass repertoire, these players are able to impart their own stylistic interpretations and breathe new life into them. For example, the bouncing tempo and key changes in "I'll Fly Away" are a pleasant surprise as the breaks get handed around. "Roanoke" is given the barn-burning treatment. As a matter of personal taste, I prefer one tune ("Red Apple Rag") at a more moderate tempo. The original CD releases from the 90s had two accompanying AcuTab transcription books (Scott Vestal's banjo and Wayne Benson's mandolin).

These guys are all the cream of the crop - musicians' musicians who have earned our respect for their great session and performance work over the years. I can tell that they had fun jamming up these tunes, and I can almost see their joy and creativity being exuded at the sessions. For a little motivation or inspiration, one need only put on a few minutes of this super picking. As hot and clean as their picking is, I can't help but think that a little more harmony might've embellished the project.

Drawn from the famed but sadly out-of-print "Bluegrass 96-99" series, this is the first time many of these 20 tunes have been available in years. Produced by Scott Vestal, this "ultimate" disc is truly worth of it's "Best of ..." moniker and is incomparably good. Absolutely extreme instrumental bluegrass favorites at their best! For their next challenge, I'd like to see them assemble the same pickers and give us 20 more tunes, new less-oft-heard ones that we can embrace as the 21st Century's standards. 5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-09-23

This record is pure, driving bluegrass. It is some of the best pickin' I have ever heard!

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect Title!.......2005-09-22

Ultimate Pickin' certainly is the best in instrumental bluegrass! It takes you from one spectrum to the other. As a musician I am always looking for the most innovative, clean players and this one delivers! I have been a fan of Rock and Blues for many years, but this one proves to me the true musicianship of bluegrassers! To me the standout of the record is the guitar player, Jeff Autry. He is the guitar player for the Voice of Newgrass, John Cowan who I saw play recently. They are amazing! Maybe it helps a little if you see them live.

5 out of 5 stars Exclusive Full Length Almighty Remixes!!!.......2006-12-27

Disc 1 has lots of full length hard to find tracks, including the exclusive full length remixes of Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out (Almighty 12" Anthem Mix), and Heather Small - Proud (Peter Presta Extended Mix). The latter is about three minutes longer than the Mixshow edit found on other compilations. Great remixes. Well done.
