Not your typical Marillion album, but very good.......2003-07-17
This album is a rarity among the Marillion collection. To begin with it's not an album of new material in the strict sense of the word, that is, material put together by the band. It consists of six Marillion songs from the "This Strange Engine" album, remixed by Marc Mitchell and Mark Daghorn as dance tracks (most, not all of them).
If you are a hardcore (mostly a Fish-era only) Marillion fan, I asure you that you will have a hard time digesting the sole idea of listening to Marillion dance remixes. But if you come into this album with an open mind, never minding who's music is behind it, you'll end up realizing it's a very good production that fits in nicely with the electronica movement of the mid-to-late nineties.
In particular, I enjoyed the version of "Estonia" and "Face 1004."
Marillion's 'This Strange Engine' incredibly remixed.......2001-10-13
As a die-hard Marillion fan having the songs of my favourite band remixed (or rather re-interpreted) as dance tunes shouldn't go down too well. But while there are some great songs on the original 'This Strange Engine' it's still not my favourite Marillion album so this CD seemed worth investing in if just for curiosity's sake. Was it worth it? Oh, yes it most definitely was! The Positive Light have made an incredible job! However, my favourites remain the first three songs. 'Estonia' has been made even more beautiful although it's more 'rock' than 'dance' so one might ask why there wasn't more experimentation on that one...in any case it's still the best song on this cd. 'The Memory of Water' is unbelievable...I actually prefer this remixed version than the original! And what can one say about 'This Strange Engine'? It's already one of my favourite Marillion songs but the remix leaves one speechless. It's that beautiful...as is the whole cd. Buy it and be pleasantly surprised!
Marillion's Makeover.......2001-08-17
I personally happen to adore this cd. It was given to me via a die hard Marillion fan (so am I) for Christmas because they wanted to hear it without buying it. (Thanks, Gary!) Needless to say, I really fell in love with it. It is not necessarily for true Marillion fans or fans of Techno music. It nicely combines the two with the vocals of Hogarth and interesting mixes based upon Marillion's music from 'Strange Engine', which happens to be an acoustic cd. It is not necessary for you to be familiar with Marillion and Strange Engine before buying this. Might I recommend though, that if you buy this cd and like it you will not necessarily like the music of Marillion. It is altered enough that an individual who likes one type of music may not care for the other. I happen to be a fan of Progressive music and Electronica both, so this one appeals to me. Either way, I hope you enjoy it or can sell it to a friend and get your money back!
Nothing remarkable.......1999-10-26
This record is clearly not that great crossover album between dance music and art-rock that it claims to be. TPL seem to be a remix duo from Britain, but they're almost unknown even in "techno-friendly" Germany. However, what they do with Marillion's music is not very interesting or innovative. They just strip away the original instrumentation (except for some guitar sounds on "Estonia") and lay down some standard acid house sequencers and rhythms. "The memory.." is quite good, but nearly every track contains too much idle motion. I wouldn't say that this is a remix album, it is just a TPL album with the vehicle of Steve's whiny voice. According to the booklet, Steve thinks that TPL make music with emotional depth, but this album is rather cold and sterile. There is much more beautiful music coming from other techno artists. Listen to Autechre's "Amber" (see my review there) or Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works".
something good turned bad.......1999-06-05
I am appalled at what has been done to some great music...I would give it 0 stars if that were an option.

Wish This CD was Longer.......2006-08-21
For the first time ever Marillion allowed remixers access to the original tapes from the recording of an album. The album was "This Strange Engine" and the group chosen was The Positive Light. The remixes turn the songs from prog-rock to something more clubby and dance-like. The styles of music go together like the ingredients of trail mix. On there own, they taste good but mixed all together they are filling and satisfy many different types of taste all in one bag.
Marillion played the result before the "This Strange Engine" concerts. The songs were familiar but not obviously recognizable. Once we got our hands on the disc we played it over and over. Positive Light has taken great songs and looked at them with new eyes. They tease out the essence of a song and expand that essence into a new work. My favorites are "Estonia" and "Face 1004." To me, these are the best examples of what I'm talking. Get Marillion's original and this CD. They compliment and raise each other to further heights of glory. I've had it for years and still listen to it on a regular basis. My only complaint is that it isn't a two CD set and ALL the songs from "This Strange Engine" got the Positive Light treatment. What a joy that CD would be!!

Interesting experiment.......2001-09-22
The title track itself justifies buying this CD. It's just amazing to hear how "The Positive Light" reinterpreted this Marillion's masterpiece with a very different music background and still transmiting the same song's spirit. If you hope to find a slight retouching of the original music you'll be dissapointed, but if you are ready to hear something new you may love it. I did.

Marillion meets Crowded House.......2001-05-23
Marillion used to be a progresive rock band.Since the arrival of Steve Hogarth Marillion albums have slowly become more and more comercial. Is it because of Hogarth's influence i do not know but ever since Fish left they have been trying to sound completly different to what they did prior to Seasons End.
Tales from the Engine room is very accoustic. The songs are very catchy. As in their latest albums gone are Mark Kelly's long keyboard solos replaced by a more techno sound. The best song for me is the title track which is a reminder of what they can achieve if they really wanted to.Why they have chosen to write pop/rock songs instead of more progresive songs i have no idea but i really miss the Marillion of old.In summary most of the songs on this album sound like a mixture of Crowded House and Marillion(Holidays In Eden).I still rate them very highly because nobody can doubt their playing ability and Steve Hogarth is a very talented singer ,i just wish they would not forget their progresive roots

A magical album.......2004-01-03
Marillion purists (I'm not one of them) supposedly have very mixed and passionate feelings about this album, all I know is when I heard it, it was nothing short of magical. Especially "Estonia". I agree with the other reviewer.
I heard this in the background at a small dinner party at a house deep in the woods of a Thailand island, the only American among a Swede, a German, a Thai, and two Argentineans; the setting only served to enhance the experience among new friends I was never to meet again.
After purchasing this album months later, it had the same magical effect. Then I bought "This Strange Engine" by Marillion, and liked it, but you know how it is when you hear one version of something before hearing another version....
Having said that, this album flopped as a gift for a friend who I thought would love it!
Buy it, it's hard to find!
A dance/ambient remix of Marillion's best Hogarth album.......1998-09-09
This shouldn't work. Marillions music hardly lends itself to a dance floor remastering. But listen to 'This Strange Engine' remixed and you'll understand why Steve Hogarth himself was moved to tears.
The opening strains of 'Estonia' introduce us to a weird and wonderful world of dark, layered musical tapestries. 'One Fine Day' is lush and nostalgic and even the PL's own 'Face 1004' doesn't sound totally out of place.
Wholly recommended. If you're a Marillion fan or not.
