The album cover of this self-titled release depicts the members of Slipknot in creepy masks, the dark image confirmed by the presence of a parental advisory sticker. Inside, foul language and subversive lyrics complete the picture. Yet Slipknot are no Insane Clown Posse, using hyperbole to mask a lack of talent. Slipknot's sound, while indebted to the likes of Korn, is more aggressive and creative. Indeed, it's a closer kin to Slayer and death metal, yet listenable and surprisingly melodic. The common denominator among Slipknot and the late '90s crop of neo-metal-rap bands is producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit), who discovered the Iowa-bred Slipknot and signed them to his label, I Am Records. His stellar production, melded with wonderfully creepy percussive elements, a sampler, a DJ, metallic-grind guitars, and singer Corey Taylor's immense passion and wide melodic range, makes Slipknot immensely listenable. Slipknot isn't for everyone, but they provide a visceral and satisfying ride for fans of the hard stuff. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:
Favorite Slipknot CD.......2007-07-11
So if you like Korn, Disturbed, Sevendust, Static-X, Rob Zombie, or Tool I dont see any reason at all you would not like this CD..
Listen to me only!.......2007-04-30
1. 742617000027: (0:35) I dont like this track much at all. All it succeeds in doing is sound weird. 1/10
2. (Sic): (3:19) This song is about a war but the law says it isnt. Great headbanging and great lyrics, and the instruments all blend in well. 9/10
3. Eyeless: (3:56) This track is one of the longer ones on the album, and indeed a good one. Listen to it and youll probably play it at least twice before moving on to track 4. 9/10
4. Wait and Bleed: (2:27) This is indeed a Slipknot Classic and the only song which actually has singing for most of the way through. It isnt particularly good to headbang to, but it still sounds good and everyone likes it. 9.5/10
5. Surfacing: (3:37) Known by maggots as the inernational f***ing anthem, this song is often played as the last song in concerts. It isnt as popular as wait and bleed, but i actually prefer this track. THree cheers for slipknot! One, two, THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/10
6. Spit it out: (2:39) My favourite track on the album, which is such a shame as it doesnt last long at all. The intro will get you headbanging instantly, and the chorus is loud enough to shake a whole hallway! It talks about someone who argues in court and in the end, the last verse tells him that the verdict is still guilty. But it is just awesome! 10.5/10
7. Tattered and torn: (2:53) This track is even worse than a chav song and thats all i have to say. 3/10
8. Me inside: (2:39) This track is also boring, but far better then Tattered and torn. The chorus is good, and therefore i rate it an extra 2 marks. 7/10
9. Liberate: (3:06) This is a song which i know all the words to, but do not understand what it is about. It has a very strong intro and chorus, and the verses are slightly weaker than the rest, but still good. Unfortunately the bit after verse 2 is the bit i dont like and i only rate it 9.5/10. 9.5/10. Take that bit out and i would give it 10.5.
10. Prosthetics: (4:58) This song is catchy in the choruses and i enjoy listening to those bits, but i dont like the rest of it. Be careful: The song has 3 choruses:
1: Mine! Ah f***ing you will be mine!
2: Damn it man i knew it was a mistake!
3: What the f*** is different?
Overall the track is good and so i rate it 9/10.
11: No Life: (2:47) This track gets annoying eventually but while it is opening up during the first minute, the song is very good. 8/10
12: Diluted: (3:22) A song i think little about, but i do like the way god is accused (I worship Satan), and god curses somebody who accordingly did nothing wrong. 8/10
13: Only One: (2:26) This track is very fierce and merciless, and i dont understand the track but nonetheless i like it. 9/10.
14: Scissors: This song doesnt interest me that much and so i dont have very much to say really. 5/10
15: Eeyore: The bonus track isnt as good as we could have hoped for, but it is better than any of the songs given under 8/10 so i give this song 8/10. Do not miss this track (it plays automatically 4 minutes after the end of scissors)!
Unusually bad Nu-Metal.......2007-03-25
Ok, Slipknot is NOT metal, let alone extreme metal. In fact, they are about as metal as The Click Five (I take that back; the Click Five is more metal than this band). Corey Taylor's vocals are weak and off-key, and the guitars are simply downtuned noise, not to mention very simple from a technical standpoint(All they do is alternate between a few one-fingered power chords). The bass is nonexistant, and Joey's drumming is sloppy. For all the praise he gets, guys like David Husvik (Extol) and Casey Grillo (Kamelot) could totally OWN him.
I can deal with sub-par lyrics as long as the music is good, but if it sucks, then I bash the lyrics too. Corey's lyrics are immature, and could have been written by a ten year old who is angry because his mom would'nt let him buy those ridiculous Hot Topic pants with all the rings and chains. Basically, all he sings about is murder and misanthropic hatred (ooh, nu-metal kids. I used a big word). They probably stem from something so minor as being picked on occasionally in school, and now he gets to have his little temper-tantrum.
I wont make fun of the fact that they have nine members (Therion happens to have eight), but the instrumentation is horrible. Trash cans and turntables? Give me a break. These illiterate apes have no business playing musical instruments, and nobody who likes actual music should have to listen to their "wall of noise" sound or insipid, violent, misogynistic lyrics.
Heres to hoping they split up soon. For real talent check out Extol, Dragonforce, Kamelot, Virgin Black, Chthonic, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Narnia, Evergrey, Tristania, Freedom Call, or pretty much anything that is Death, Black, Gothic, Thrash, or Power metal.
OMG just shut up already! Jesus!.......2007-03-03
it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it! As I got older my taste in music matured ever more. If you were assumeing I am some teenager who doesnt know real music you are wrong! I like all kinds of metal! If you are going to call me a poser metal head you are wrong! I have respefct for all kinds of metal! I like stuff like Soilwork, Dimmu Bogir, Trivium, Dio, Nevermore, Dragonforce, and etc. etc. I like everything from classic metal, power, death, black, nu metal and beyond!
I am just sick of all this bashing of nu-metal. You have no right to judge all nu-metal fans as idiot narrow-minded teenagers! Seriously Its just like me judgeing all you narrow minded classic rockers as 35 year losers who live in their mother's basement who just cant leave the 70's and the 80's behind! Because that is probably what most of you are! If you were a "true metalhead" as you call yourself surely you would have respect for all kinds of metal! If you are saying nu-metal is talentless you must be a retard! Every genre of music is talented in its own right (except for teen pop and rap.)
Seriously why bash Slipknot if the Backstreet Boys just came out with a new CD? I am sure even you would rather listen to Slipknot than listen to them. I know I would. Like I said I am tired of hearing "Nu-Metal is dead!" So Hair Metal or Glam Metal is not dead? Yeah right! You are saying nu-metal is dead but I dont reckon the genres I just listed stayed for long now did they? Dont get me wrong I like that kind of stuff too.
As time goes by things change! Get used to it! People who were raised around different things like different stuff! I was raised around nu-metal so what do you expect? Although I do like everything else. Seriously I hear alot of people saying extremely cruel and uncalled for things about nu-metal fans and saying things like "I hope all you nu-metal fans get AIDS" or "I wont 2 kill mislef wen I heer dis!!" I think it is wrong to hate people just because they like a different genre of music than you do! So wish such a terrible thing just because I like a different kind of music than you do? AIDS is nothing to joke around about. You are sick! And if you are going to kill yourself just over music then you must be a retard.
So what if Slipknot sounds like every other nu-metal band. Hey most hair metal bands sound exactly the same as eachother so there. Sorry about my rambleing. Now about Slipknot. Yeah I know they sound like every other nu-metal band but hey who cares! Then again what band doesnt these days. I dont even know what I just said...

If it's sometimes a chore to get past Slipknot's stratified shock-rock shtick, Iowa's nouveau metal-mongers take the occasion of their third album proper to prove there's a genuinely restless, undeniable musical juggernaut beneath the horror-show masquerade. Producer Rick Rubin has honed their modern metal assault to a fine edge here, tempering it with a compelling sense of dynamics missing from all too many similar heavy forgings in the bargain. But credit the band with hammering together the solid foundations of what stands as their best album to date, a collection that succeeds by--surprise--reverting to more traditional song-forms and occasionally operating at something other than a relentless fevered pitch. Call it mainstreaming or a newfound maturity; whatever it is, it pays diverse dividends from the opening cinematic tension of "Prelude 3.0" and paramilitary-cadenced thrill ride "Three Nil" to the moody, rap-thrash single "Duality" and the unlikely, angst-laden pop hooks of "Circle." If that song's cello-inflected atmospherics and lilting Corey Taylor vocals may have the band's faithful initially rubbing their ears in puzzlement, by the time the evocative acoustic guitars, bittersweet harmonies and string quartet break of "Vermilion Pt. 2" rolls around, it's clear this is a band who's challenged itself with broad new horizons--and triumphed. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Within the confines, or lack thereof, of VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) lies a new level of musicianship, achieved through the hard work poured into supporting their self-titled debut and their subsequent hit album, IOWA. Produced by Rick Rubin, Vol 3 not only captures the band's strengths to this point- it sees the spore that is Slipknot exploding in all directions. The songs on this daring effort transcend traditional hard music structure, and will surprise the uninitiated with their dynamic appeal. Masterful guitar work, visceral drum beats, and a newly-expanded vocal range are highlights of this work that Corey Taylor (#8) calls "both brutal and beautiful." Much of the creative inspiration in evidence on the new album is owed to Rubin and his reputedly- haunted mansion, in which the band lived while recording VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). "You can really feel (the effect of the mansion) on the album. There were ghosts in the machine, in the equipment! . Things would freeze, things would loop for no reason at all. It was strange," adds Taylor. Paul Gray (#2) comments on what Rubin brought to the table "Rick brought a huge amount of open mindedness - normally 9 different people trying different things can be tough - Rick got us to just throw all our preconceived notions out the window. He was able to integrate bits and pieces of everyone's ideas."The first single off VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES), "Duality" is, "lyrically, what you might think... we've been through a lot as a band and the lyrics really reflect our maintaining faith and the perseverance of all 9 of us," says Joey Jordison (#1). "Duality" represents the album well in its unwillingness to compromise the band's rock foundation and its ability to be aurally appealing and melodic at the same time. Other songs of note on the record, "Before I Forget" and "Vermillion" underline the statement made by "Duality", with their dark melodies and fierce instrumentation. "Before I Forget" is about rising above the bull*#!t and being a person, not a human. It's about saying what you mean and meaning what you say - taking zero bull#!*t." adds Taylor, "and Vermillion is a stalker's love song, shot thru his eyes. It's kind of a does he or doesn't he type thing - it's left open for you to decide."

Haha................2007-06-01
Iowa and their self-titled at least were interesting listens, and made slipknot the forerunneres of nu-metal or whatever name you give to this crap genre of metal. Iowa has some moments that are good, and that album is extremely dark and brooding, even for nu-metal. This album focuses on Corey turning Slipknot into Stone Sour. There are seriously no interesting songs!!!!!!
Sure they get a lot of radioplay and they have more fans than they did, but this band has really turned into garbage. Corey's screaming actually was decent, but terrible in this recording. The acoustic songs are terrible and his new singing voice is just plain bad. Money turned an okay "once a year listen" into this: seriously the worst cd I've ever heard. I'd probably rather listen to William Hung than this because I can at least laugh instead of being bored and sickened with disgust for the nonuse of talent in this recording. But thats all inplying that slipknot has talent: as I said Corey HAD a good screaming voice, but the rest of the band was very questionable from the beginning. 2 percussionists? I can usually only hear 1 and the two of them together equal one half of a bad metal band's drummer. (P.S. Thats pathetic)
I just hope that some of you listening to this abomination use it as a stepping stone to get into actual metal. I got into the Gothenburg bands (In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At the gates, old Soilwork to name a few) and have never looked back into this patheic genre........when you grow up, go to college, and your brain develops, you'll agree with me. My only hope is that at least 1 person looks at one of those aformentioned bands and begins their future listening to good music. My mission will be complete!
For those of you who already have this cd, don't worry, it still has use. I put mine in a buddy's microwave and seeing it shoot sparks and disintegrate will entertain you far more than the cd ever could. I just hope this genre runs out of steam soon, as well as the new slipknot does, and judging by this cd, it won't be long for either.
W00T Slipknot at ther best.....Kill MCR!.......2007-04-17
This is the best Slipknot album there is and there most muture album. The albums prelude is a bit slow, but it get BLOWN OUT with the blister. I have all slipknot cds (including orginal copy of MFKR) and this is best one out. Alot of people go bashing this bad because they listen to crappy nickleback and mcr and poo...well all I have to say is, WTF! Metal fans alot of the time bash slipknot cuz they dont realize that normal metal is a dying breed.... Anyway about the album... The blister, three nil, duality, opium all kick booty tracks that will make u listen to um over and over. Circle, a milder track to calm u down a bit and keeps u listening, Welcome a regular kind of slipknot, but this album can afford it with it mighty powerfulness. Vermillion, one of the weirdest yet cool slipknot songs there is, if ur use to listening to self titled and iowa this song will make you go, wow, thats slipknot. pulse and b4 i forget are also great tracks on this cd that go along with opening tracks. vermillion pt 2, a uber mello song, cool though, the nameless is a awsum track, realy cool good beat and catchy, virus and danger a way to calm u down while sticking to the metal. The band has much improved since there earlier cds and there lyrics r much more tentalizing. Best Slipknot out there, and dont you slipknot bashers go picking on it cuz of ur MCR, I must point out that MCR wasnt all bad, at the start, but has grown into a point that if i hear the black parade i yell at the people playing it and threaten them with slipknot. Slipknot = Best out there right now... hope they remain for a long time.
It'll grow on you.......2007-04-11
dropped back a little/ But i have to say...........2007-03-22
The best song I would have to say is a debate between duality, and the blister exsists. Iowa is still the best CD.
Great music for angry socially inept teenagers........2007-03-15
But if you were like me in high school one of the poor, quiet, socilally inept ones wearing Band T-shirts who wishes all preppies and popular kids would just suddenly burst into flames than this kind of music is the ultimate chill out music!
This what I want to say! I am sick and tired of all this bashing of Nu-Metal! What is so bad about it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it (this alblum anyways that new stuff is junk)! Right from the introductory shriek and grind of "(515)," you know Slipknot are deadly serious about making a real heavy metal album. Iowa is intimidating in its unforgiving heaviness. Produced to perfection by wunderkind Ross Robinson, it takes the best of Slayer as a starting point. "People = Shit," "The Heretic Anthem," and "New Abortion" are relentless and wholly brutal, but this is no mere thrash. "Disasterpiece" features a weird, hypnotic riff, while "Left Behind" comes across like a duet between Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Slayer's Tom Araya. The rerecorded "Gently" builds slowly from industrial atmospherics to a punishing explosion of noise. The title track (also old and formerly known as "Killers Are Quiet") is a deeply unsettling heavy-metal "Midnight Rambler." Frontman Corey Taylor claims to have performed it naked and bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, which isn't hard to believe. This masterfully constructed collection is painfully raw and utterly compelling. --Dominic WillsCustomer Reviews:
Love it!.......2007-03-16
Although not for the squeemish (as most extreme metal albums are) I say this is a must own for fans of heavy and extreme metal. It didnt sound anything like nu-metal to me.
Some may think the excessive amount of lyrics about breakups and love are not the best option for any band to choose but I dont mind.
I don't want to bombard you with cliche's but let me just put it this way: the way Corey sings/screams alongside Mick's guitar may actually be a very well epic sound.
Check out the track clip previews, especially track 6, the Heretic Anthem. Some of the previews dont catch the best parts of the songs but I'd highly recommend this album to any heavy/extreme metal fan.

It's not just a Tac-Nuke, it's another way to say I Hate You.......2007-02-16
Man it doesn't take much to get upstaged.
The 21st Century is like some great blood-soaked gut-spattered gory canvas of Satan, and a real work of art it is: Genocide in all its viscera-spattered glory stomping red-toothed & hungry across the Sudan & despoiling Rwanda; the annihilation by 747 of two of America's most iconic skyscrapers; constant headhacking, decapitation, & the development of Suicide Bombing as one Religion's single contribution to culture; riots, looting, burning, raping, maiming to say nothing of the lesser Lights of Violence like typhoons, twisters, earthquakes, and even a hurricane that devoured a major American city while everybody just watched.
Man it's been a doozy, hasn't it? Who needs monsters when we have Mankind?
In this world full of idiots, I'm grateful that I have a band like Slipknot. I'm glad I can spin a brutal little brass-knuckles headcrusher of a CD like Iowa, which is great music to listen to when you want to crush people and break things. When you're tired of idiots on the highway driving in the passing lane at 45 mph, creating a rolling roadblock---the same idiots who scream down leafy & narrow suburban streets at 90 mph or tailgating you within inches of your back bumper when you have nowhere to go.
You with me?
It's great music to just let rampage through your ears, your guts, your windows, when you're sick of the vomit our so-called "Leaders" spew, vomit that passes as wisdom, vomit that assures us we should fret & worry about what terrorist savages think about us, that we should be ready at every instant to bow & scrape & apologize.
It's for those moments when some hideous mainstream sub-normal twists up his face and says "why do you have to be so weird?". It's for everybody who ever said "you're never gonna make it", for every chick who ever shot you down because she was gunning for the QB, who now sells used cars and comes home to the little hovel they call a home, gunning his grungy little Geo through the stoplights.
It's for those days that are Red in Tooth & Claw, when the Rage just spills over and you need something to serve as a soundtrack for fury.
That's "Iowa".

Heaviest death/trash metal album ever..........2006-12-24
It's more like a 4 star, but I rated 5 to boost the average........2006-10-06
This is definietly Slipknot's best (and only good). When it was released in 2001, I was surprised after their pretty weak debut. I didn't like that album too much, however it had its moments and a great song "W&B". And when Iowa came out, I was glad to hear a pure anger-metal assault, it was a good listen in the sea of fashionable rap-rock bulls**t bands which ones were the kings of the music world back then (crazytown, limpbizkit etc.). Now this band is a SELLOUT, Vol. 3. was disappointing after this and 9.0 Live is by far the worst live album I've ever heard! I dont think Slipknot will sound like this ever again, what a pity, Corey should stay in Stone Sour. Anyway, nevermind about this tragedy, just get this album it improves that this band used to be able to make something decent (however not excellent) and continue it but they've lost it.

Album Description
In a world where the mentality seems to be "work less, yet earn more," Slipknot have done everything they can to work harder and earn what they deserve, much to the chagrin of their so-called peers, yet to the delight of their fans, known affectionately as the Maggots. The latest culmination of their efforts is Slipknot 9.0: Live, a bludgeoning live double CD of the past three album's worth of material that captures all of the noise, hatred, intensity, violence, pain, blood and infection that make the maggots swarm. "Most of the people that are going to buy this record are core fans, and normally when they listen to an album, they say: 'Oh, this part is brutal, oh, this is bad-ass.' And they rewind over parts and sing along," Crahan explains. "But I think with this record, they're going to be very silent because I think they're going to be painting a picture of us live in their head as they hear it. You're used to seeing us live, but now you're hearing it live, so you're forced to paint the movie in your head, which creates a psychosis - that is what we are doing with rock and roll music." The 24 recordings on 9.0: Live were made directly from the soundboard in countless cities and capture the immediacy and explosiveness of the Slipknot experience, an experience that took on a new life two years ago. In July of 2003, Slipknot convened in a dilapidated mansion in the Hollywood Hills. By January of 2004, they emerged with Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses, an album that would re-establish them as the premiere hard rock band in the world. And in March of 2004, they set out to remind the world of that by doing what they do best: taking it to the people live - a full-contact concert experience. The album contains blips from the nearly two years of brutal touring the band waded through, rejoicing, suffering, destroying, but most importantly reconnecting as a unit, a family, an unstoppable force that will never be reckoned with, never be duplicated, but always envied.Customer Reviews:

"Are you ready to have a friggin' good time?!".......2006-06-24
Furthermore, if you've ever had your doubts about Slipknot being good musicians and/or songwriters, you can now (and forever) lay those doubts to rest. The guitarists, Mick Thompson and James Root, thrash away at their instruments, playing riff after blazing riff, and drummer Joey Jordinson, who might be the most talented one in the group, plays very talented, almost punk-ish drum beats which drive the songs. Plus, one might think that having all nine band members playing at the same time would drown out somebody's playing, but it almost never does. Even the second drummer, Chris Fehn, gets his moment in the spotlight (as in "The Blister Exists" and "Before I Forget").
The only foreseeable downside to "9.0 Live" is that some fans may not be able to sit through the whole thing (it is two discs and darn close to being two hours long). But, to be fair, there is a fair share of banter between frontman Corey Taylor and the crowd. Plus, drummer Joey Jordinson does get one whole track to himself (track eleven on the first disc, "Drum Solo" is an interlude of sorts.)
Every single song on here is executed and performed absolutely perfectly. Some of the songs are even arguably better than the studio version. The first disc begins with a joking, British-sounding voice telling the audience (much to their dismay) "Slipknot will not be performing this evening." Guitarist Mick, however, then launches into a grinding main riff and the first song, "The Blister Exists", has begun. This is one of many inspiring songs here which is pulsating with intensity and exhilaration (other songs like this include "(sic)", "Disasterpiece", and "Eeyore.") The catchy songs ("Before I Forget", which features both guitarists pounding out churning, headbanging riffs, and the careening "Pulse Of The Maggots") remain catchy, and maybe even have slightly better hooks than the originals. Some other places on the first disc, like during track six (when Corey bellows "It's time for everyone to jump, come on!"), I could barely control myself from staying in my seat. That song also establishes a good dynamic, because Slipknot played a neck snapper like "Liberate", but then take things down a notch for a more restrained number, "Vermillion." Later on, "Purity" (which is actually a rarity which evolved from a Slipknot demo), allows the DJ (Sid Wilson) to shine, because it begins with some good, catchy scratches. "Eyeless" shows off the whole band's stellar musicianship and willingness to work as a whole. This song is very musically complex, as it begins with some more DJ scratching and boasts a terrific give-and-take between the double bass drumming and scorching riffs.
Next, for track eleven, Joey turns out a lengthy, multi-speed, polyrhythmic, everything-but-the kitchen-sink drum solo which is pretty darn amazing.
"The Heretic Anthem"--which begins with a chilling spoken word intro (of the song's chorus) before turning to heavy, churning riffs and swift, buzzsaw drumming--and an especially vicious rendition of "People=Sh - t" are the two main highlights on the second disc. But they aren't the only standouts: "Three Nil", "Everything Ends", and "Duality" are a couple of the other blistering tracks. Plus, "The Nameless", which has a great friction between the hard hitting guitars and two acoustic breakdowns, and the punching guitars and emotional, throat-straining yells on "Skin Ticket" (which is actually pulled off, here, quite well for a song Slipknot had never played in concert before), are notable, as well. And the very last song is "the international f - ckin' anthem" (which is what Corey calls "Surfacing").
One might think that, over the course of these twenty-four tracks, the novelty might wear off. But that isn't true, either! Simply put, "9.0 Live" is a fantastic live album from an absolutely great live band (and great band in general). Definitely buy this album if you're a Slipknot fan, pop it in your changer, and (as Corey says early on) be "ready to have a f - ckin' good time"!
This cd doesnt deserve soo many bad reviews!.......2006-06-23
CD REVIEW:
This album aint at all that bad! Slipknot has a heavier sound when they perform live, cory's vocals are just as good as when he is in the studio recording. Songs like (Sic), Spit It Out, Surfacing, and others give you this pumped up feeling and just make you want to head bang. Alot of live cds are boring and dull, just listen to Linkin Park live in Texas, youll know what i mean, but this cd gives you the feel that you're actuallly there! Spit It Out contains a command from Cory to get on the ground and jump up with a giant crash of pure metal. If you've seen Disasterpieces you know what im talking about. Joey gets a little sloppy in the drums in Three Nil but still ok, gets a little annoying tho. Hope this helps!

an open minded review of not just this album, but the state of metal in general.......2005-08-07
Metal as a musical genre is really changing,I'm old school(80s thrash and black metal mostly) and bands such as Korn,Mudvayne, Slipknot and Mushroomhead,as well as Killswitch Engage have totally revolutionized(some say destroyed) metal. Metal is a trend again,it's back, angry, and coming for you...you have been warned!

Holy countercultural confluence! For the cause of fundraising for the defense of a trio of legally bound Arkansas headbangers--one of whom is currently on death row on the basis of hearsay testimony--Henry Rollins has resurrected the sacrosanct songs of his legendary former Los Angeles hardcore band Black Flag. Much as he first joined the popular Flag by jumping on stage and grabbing the microphone, Rollins here assigns lead vocals to a bewildering array of guests, including Iggy Pop, Dean Ween, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Araya of Slayer, Queens of the Stone Age, and Ice T. The Rollins Band convincingly serves as caustic backing band throughout. Protest music godfather Chuck D. of Public Enemy appears as well, though simply to introduce the album. Many of the singers, whether inspired by the cause itself or the muscular caliber of Black Flag's music, deliver the rebellious message with heartfelt intensity. Motorhead leader Lemmy's ripping version of "Thirsty and Miserable" is a stunning highlight, as is Hank Williams III's psychotic "No Values." Former Flag singers Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski bring their veteran intensity, and Rollins himself shouts "My War," "TV Party," "Black Coffee," "Annihilate This Week," "Slip It In," and the title track. (Flag guitarist-lyricist Greg Ginn is notably absent, though his trademark clear Lucite guitar joins the West Memphis Three defendants on the cover artwork.) The participating musicians' anger and frustration over the West Memphis Three case, which has been detailed in HBO's Paradise Lost documentaries, is well matched with the giant fury of this band. --Ian ChristeCustomer Reviews:
Good Music For A Bad Cause.......2007-03-07
This would be a good thing if there was good reason to believe that the WM 3 really were framed for a crime that they commit. Problem is the pro-WM 3 material on this CD contains many factual errors and fails to make a persuasive case to believe in the innocence of the WM 3.
If you want to listen to this good music, then the thing to do is to look for it at your local public library, secondhand music shop or borrow it from a friend. Don't let your good money go to support a bad cause like the West Memphis 3.
Great Songs, Great Cause!.......2007-02-16
Truth or complacency? The choice is yours........2005-01-23
This is not for fans of ignorance or complacency in any of its forms. Certainly NOT for fans who think Henry Rollins is just trying to "free convicted murderers." And certainly NOT for fans who think that people who read Stephen King books are all Satanic killers.
Watch the "Paradise Lost" HBO documentaries, read "Devil's Knot" and "Blood of Innocents" and form educated opinions. Don't impugn Rollins or any of these musicians for having higher standards for OUR legal system and wanting to make sure we have the truth. When three people are convicted on hearsay and circumstantial evidence and one is sentenced to death, you can expect people from all over the country to take notice and want to get involved, because some of us still believe in justice and the separation of church and state. Anything less is un-American.
This is Henry Rollins' attempt to raise money for the truth, whatever it may be. Rollins told one victim's family as much. If the WM3 are proven guilty, at least we will have more to rely on than hearsay and Satanic Panic (you know, like actual, concrete evidence, which has been absent from this case since the start). The phrase "innocent until proven guilty" simply does not apply to this case. The prosecution proved nothing, except that West Memphis, Arkansas is a place free-thinking people probably shouldn't visit. Pardon the rest of America for thinking Metallica CDs aren't quite enough to prove someone is a murderer.
This is a great effort on the part of all the musicians involved, and it proves that ignorance still has opposition in America.
English as a second language for Americans.......2004-05-31
This a compact disc full of MUSIC, however, and that is the real point here. You can't get much better than this with Henry Rollins being joined by Black Flag alums like Chuck Dukowski and Keith Morris, as well as Hank Williams III (the best REAL country musician working today), Lemmy from Motorhead, Exene from X, Ryan Adams, Tom from Slayer, Nick from Mondo Generator, and plenty more. The music is all provided by Mother Superior, a terriffic caustic rock trio with plenty of CDs of their own out there. They are best known as the Rollins Band, mach II, of course. They became his backing band a few years ago, although this is no longer the case. Henry is set to reveal a new band soon. They tear it up here, and the guitar sound is nearly perfect since the Dan Armstrong guitar donated to the cause was used for the recording, getting close to that classic Greg Ginn sound.
Black Flag are one of the ten most important bands in the history of music, and these songs should not be missed. Check this disc out, then check out some of the original releases for a real lesson in rock and roll.
And check out the Paradise Lost films for a lesson in how easily the US court system can break down when it is allowed to be placed in the hands of ignorant rednecks who don't understand that church and state are required BY LAW to remain separate and distinct.
If the victims in this case were my family, I would want the real killer or killers to be found. I would not want to find the nearest scapegoat and ruin that person (or in this case persons) life. Punishing scapegoats is what the nazis did, isn't it?
a testament to the surviving power of music.......2003-12-24

ALL EDITED CD'S SUCK.......2004-12-04
sLiPkNoT=mAyHeM.......2004-01-18
Let me start this review by tellin everybody who reads this that this band is probably one of the best new age bands that can eva exist, apart from Linkin park,Mudvayne,Disturbed&Godsmack
This isnt "rap" as one of the reviewers who gave it a one star called it,from the musical point of view, this band is heavy,2 rhythm/lead,1 bass,1(extremely fast)drummer,1 sampler,2 percussionsts,1 d.j.& 1 hell of a kick ass vocalist, this 9 member outfit comprises of sLiPkNoT
They hail from De Moines,Iowa and have heeps of musical history behind them, this is the first album theyve cut and I think that this will go down in history as one of the heaviest new age albums eva!!!
Every member,I MEAN every member have contributed to this album in every aspect
The Drumming is outstanding and this guy"Joey jordison",is nothing but a drum machine with his constant use of real heavy double bass(another really good double bass drummer is vinnie paul from pantera)its a treat to lissen to the way he uses each and every cymbal on the songs and lemme warn ya thia guy is fast!!!!!(Lissen 2 the songs sic, wait&bleed and the intro to eyeless)Joey plays the guitar on a side project called murderdolls
To add to the noise are the 2 percussionists who also play a very important role amidst all this heaviness(Shawn(the clown)is the founder of this band)
Paul gray(the pig face) is the bassist and the co founder of this band along with Shawn crahan
The two guitarists, mic thompson and JiM"peach"root are the ones behind the mind blowing riffs and heavy solos in this album
The First song on this album along with "iowa",are composed by dj Sid
Now Corey, frontman of this 9 member outfit, does some amazin throat on this album, especialy on songs such as sic, wait&bleed, eyeless, liberate,me inside and plenty more!!!!
Corey is said to be the most silent member of the band but very aggressive on stage,he is presently on a side project along with guitarist jim root called"Stone sour",which is also a wonderful band in a diff way,its real nice 2 lissen 2 Corey whether he does throat or not, from this band theres a song of his which appears on the "Spiderman",ost called Bother which speaks a lot about the extended vocal range that this guy has
Added to all the madness are the masks that all the members wear, this is something that has really influences their music as well
To all who read my review I wud strongly recomend Slipknots Disasterpieces on (DVD),this release is classic example of the wat the band are all about on stage
mic thompson(the guitarist)has a side project on his mind as well
There are rumours though that this band might break up,but on the other hand there are also rumous that they are in the studio working on their third album
If you like this album u will also like iowa, which is heavier in a diff way
And then if ud start lissenin 2 this band ona reular basis and freak out on their music(Like I do!),Pick up the pledge of Allegiance tour(also feat mudvayne,System of a down&American head charge)&Ozzfest 2001 which also has a very wide range of some amazin artists&bands such as marlyin manson, the God Ozzy himself,Disturbed,Black Label society,Mudvayne,Linkin Park&a lots more
All in all if ud like 2 go crazy and headbang 2 some real heavy music, pick this album up&trust me its well worth it,ur not gonna regret this @all
keep rockin!!!!!
A 10 out of 10 Album.......2003-12-15

introductions to metal.......2003-06-14
this is a alright track and it features ok instrumentation saved by the drummer.
its less heavy than all of their other songs, expecially the vocals, where corey hardly screams at all. the vocals are ok they're just a bit different than usual.
This song is also pretty commercialised because it is repetitive.
Average for a single.......2003-06-05
Left Behind- Good Track. Accesible(unlike some other tracks from IOWA. I'm not dissing the heavy stuff, I actually like it better, but this is a breath of fresh air.)
Liberate(live)- Not as good as the studio version but still enough to get you pumped up.
surfacing(live)- see liberate. Anthemic!
You also get the left behind video which is probably their best vid to date. Violent. Cool performance shots of the band and raining blood. What else do you need. The wait and Bleed single has more to offer than this though.Pick up the full lengths and maybe get this if you like them alot (like me).
