Robert Silverstein-20th Century Guitar Magazine
"The big, rocking guitar beat of Les Fradkin is essential listening for fans of surf-rock instrumental sounds."

Product Description
The second full-length album by Les Fradkin & Get Wet, "A Day At The Beach," skillfully merges a number of majestic instrumental guitar styles and surf-rock influences. He won over guitar fans with his first surf-rock extravaganza, 1999’s Splash!, yet with the 2001 release of A Day At The Beach Fradkin set a new standard of excellence. Although he grew up on early Ventures, Dick Dale and Duane Eddy, Fradkin’s penchant for musical drama and an appreciation for classical masters like Pagannini, Mozart and Bach—as well as hard rock guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen—comes across loud and clear on the sweeping, guitar-centric vision of A Day At The Beach. Leading off with the riff-roaring title track, "A Day At The Beach"—a reverb-soaked guitar wrangler that would fit perfectly on a ‘60s Ventures album—Fradkin hits the bullseye repeatedly on exceptional tracks like "Key West Sunset"—with it’s noteworthy Shadows flavor—and the lofty "Nature Calls." In addition to the fine originals, A Day At The Beach also finds the guitarist putting his own stamp on several covers, including a notable Get Wet take of the Beach Boys’ "Good Vibrations" and a visionary "Beck’s Bolero", from the first Jeff Beck solo album, Truth. With Fradkin playing and performing everything—with occasional assistance from Eddie Bertand, Doug Cornell and Tim MacDougall—this 2004 expanded edition CD of A Day At The Beach is newly upgraded with 24 bit remastering, revamped cover art as well as a pair of live bonus tracks recorded in Denver a few years back by Les and his Get Wet touring ensemble. Tailor made for ‘instro’ guitar enthusiasts as well as those looking to rediscover the classic surf-rock sound of the ‘60s, A Day At The Beach is bound to become a favorite among surf-rockers of all ages for years to come. Catch the wave!

5 out of 5 stars This disc does not leave my cd changer.......2001-12-21

WOW - I have hundreds of cds and this almost instantly became my favorite. No matter what type of music you listen to, there is something here for everyone. The variety of styles all blend together perfectly for a front to back listen.

5 out of 5 stars One that I give away..........2000-04-21

It is almost impossible to know if others will like a tune when they hear it for the first time. Consequently, choosing music to give as a gift is often a waste of time and money to both parties. This is one of the CD's which I believe should be given anyway. Aside from a variety of styles making this CD a delight to listen to, the stories , though sometimes a bit dark, are intruiging as well.

Give one to a friend at be surprised at what they like about it...

5 out of 5 stars A Day at the Beach.......2000-04-12

I can listen to these guys forever. Every tune is either happy and upbeat or smooth and pensive. They are all excellent. Some of Sonia Dada's stuff reminds me of Little Feat, but they have a greater range of sound and content --imagine a rock, gospel, R&B and folk melange. I want to hear them all over the radio. And no, I'm not sleeping with a band member. I just really love their music.

Having seen Sonia DaDa at Nashville's Dancin in the District, ( the biggest draw of the entire 15 week season )music fans and retailers alike have to get ready for business when S.D. comes to town. ITS GONNA BE 10,000 plus @ this show..A Day @ the Beach is exactly what it feels like.. when the music is over you realize its just the damn Cumberland River after all.

This CD is a gem. Their eclectic blend of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, and funk will knock your socks off. No two tracks are alike and show the wide ranging talent of this band. I would single out individual tracks, but all of them are excellent. Having listened to this album for 5 years, I still enjoy "jamming" to it and never tire of hearing this band get into a groove. Sonia Dada is the real deal. Check them out!

Album Description

One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-07

I bought this CD (downloaded it from iTunes, actually...) to play for my baby -- both to help her nap, and to entertain her while awake. It's gorgeous! I especially enjoy the French selections, and baby slept very well while this CD was playing -- then awoke and entertained herself for at least 1/2 hour while listening to it (and playing with her mobile). Having sampled so many really mediocre Classical CD's marketed for children, I decided to just get a CD "for adults" that seemed like a baby might like it, and this one is great for both of us!

5 out of 5 stars Truly, A Day At The Beach.......1999-12-13

I often find that when I listen to New Age music or Classical music mixed with the sounds of nature something seems missing. Perhaps the nature sounds drown out the music, or perhaps the music does not match well with the chosen sounds of nature, or sometimes the instrumentation doesn't fit well. In the case of this CD, "A Day At The Beach", none of these problems appear. If ever there was a perfect blend of the correct nature sounds, music compositions and chosen instrumentation, this CD is it. Living in Savannah, Georgia for seven years, I spent many pleasent moment on the beaches there listening to the ocean sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, crashing upon the sand with the seagulls and dolphin playing in the air and sea (respectively, of course...). This CD, with its beautiful piano renditions of truly nine of the most heart rendering compositions ever written by man, takes me back there. It will sweep you away from your tiring day to the peace and calm of the beach and ocean which I myself used to enjoy so well. There is not a single bad selection on the CD, starting softly with Gymnopedie 1 & 3, building up slowly to Pachebel's most beautiful of all Canon In D Major, and finishing superbly with Beethoven's Pathetique. If you enjoy the beach, if you like beautiful music played brilliantly on the piano, then this is the CD for you.

Product Description

Amy Beach (1873-1942) was probably the first woman composer to gain attention for writing successfully in the large forms of the nineteenth century: symphony, concerto, oratorio and chamber music. But it is in her songs and solo piano music that we glimpse a more private and intimate Beach. Beach produced more than 120 songs, only a few of which are known to the general public. This superb CD presents 22 of Beach s finest songs, a selection which ranges from some of her earliest published efforts through her later brooding masterpieces. American baritone Patrick Mason is accompanied on this recording by leading Beach specialist, pianist Joanne Polk. Together, Mason and Polk s penetrating interpretations make an excellent case for these songs as major English language song literature. These Patrick Mason recordings are also available on Bridge: Schubert: Die Winterreise; with Phyllis East, piano; BRIDGE 9053 Songs of Ravel, Faur , Poulenc and Dutilleux; with Robert Spillman, piano; BRIDGE 9058 Stephen Sondheim: Sunday Song Set; with David Starobin, guitar; on BRIDGE 9009 Tod Machover: VALIS, an opera on the novel by Philip K. Dick; BRIDGE 9007 Elliott Carter: Three Poems of Robert Frost; with Speculum Musicae; on BRIDGE 9014

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "SONGS OF AMY BEACH" IS TIMELESS.......2005-12-30

What a delight! I received this disc as a gift and enjoyed it more than any set of songs since the first time I heard Schubert's "Die Schoene Mullerin".

Amy Beach's charming songs for baritone and piano, written at the turn of the century, escape any hint of sentimentality and travel straight to the heart, sometimes with complexity, but often with timeless simplicity.

"Sweetheart, Sigh No More" is the most enchanting love song I have heard in years. You will long to be desperately in love again. Patrick Mason woos his lover with a luscious baritone that reminds me of Dietrich Fischer-Diescau's and a wonderful intimacy made up of tenderness, humor, and masculinity.

The interpretations of Mr. Mason and Joanne Polk are passionate, thoughtful and vital. Some are whimsical, such as "Wouldn't That Be Queer" and some are just plain wise and fresh, as in "Baby".

Hats off to Mr. Mason, Ms. Polk and Bridge Records for a real beauty!

Give a copy of this disc to everyone you love.

This CD was purchased for a gift basket for the book "The Devil in the White City" and featuring the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.
I bought copies for family when I realized our friend Kimberly Schmidt, a world reknown pianist, was also the pianist on this CD. The CD itself was beautiful with songs, melodies, instrunmental and opera from the period. Very enjoyable...

2 out of 5 stars Never judge a CD by its cover.......2007-07-03

Nice picture on Cd cover. Music content was a mess. Not my idea of a day at the beach. Keep looking.

1 out of 5 stars Good title and good concept, but did not like the sound........2006-08-27

Didn't agree with me. I could not listen to one of these tracks all the way through. Had to hit the "Seek" button to get out of each one. Maybe I am not a true jazz lover. There were lots of dissonant sounds and, to me, just plain noise added with whistles and odd instruments. I was so disappointed I returned it to Amazon and did not even open the other two CDs in this series that I had also ordered. Great cover photos and concepts but based on this CD I am staying away from this series.
The jazz series I love is put out by Denon, also available on Amazon.
Two that I love are "The most relaxing Jazz Standards in the universe" and "The most relaxing Romantic Jazz".

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-08-08

This one is fantastic! I enjoy Smooth Jazz at work and this is the best! I am sure I will be buying more "Jazz for" CDs.

5 out of 5 stars I Love these Jazz For... Cd's.......2004-09-21

All of the Savoy Jazz/Jazz 32, including this one, cd's are great. The music really goes with the mood that the title suggests. These are of great value to other (instrumental)jazz lovers.

    5 out of 5 stars Really Great.......2004-09-03

One thing that has yet to be mentioned is that these are all art songs written by women composers. I am a big fan of both of the performers. I really like the first three pieces and Still by Gwenyth Walker. If you are a begginer or an old timer when it comes to art songs, this is a must!
The title is accually Ah love but a day, not American Art Songs

5 out of 5 stars music fan in southern Virginia.......2003-08-15

I LOVE this CD and have played it constantly since purchasing it. My favorite selection is Guide My Feet with Louise Toppin's amazing high voice. The purity and sheer height of her instrument are incredible. I have also really enjoyed hearing the rich baritone of Jay Pierson and excellent accompanying of John O'Brien. The repertoire is refreshing and musically presented by all three artists. I HIGHLY recommend this CD to all.

5 out of 5 stars North Hollywood Fan- Jay Pierson is Wonderful.......2002-09-14

This CD is lovely. Jay Pierson has a wonderful voice and the interpretation of his selections is stellar. I really love "Into the Night" and can listen to it over and over. I also think it is great that the female composers get their long overdue DO! I hope they somehow know that their music is not only being heard, but being performed beautifully. Toppin does a great job also, but I really love the baritone sound. Truly a beautiful CD!!! Thank you to both performers - but especially Pierson!

5 out of 5 stars great CD, but ms toppin was NOT on TOP.......2002-04-08

the fabulous baritone CLEARLY shared the spotlight with toppin. the repetoire throughout was quite distinguished and beautiful between both singers, but i could have done without toppin being listed as the FEATURED singer on this CD. this CD has one of the most elegant, musical, baritones that ive ever heard on it. the best song sung by toppin was "take me to the water" - it was quite emotional, per toppin's pure tone and child-like vocal character - perfect match. "into the night" is glorious, and "ah love but a day" is gorgeous. a beautiful beautiful CD .

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2000-06-06

Louise Toppin sings some beautiful, though neglected repertoire. She is ably assisted by Jay Pierson and John O'Brien, but this is clearly her project. Definitely recommended!

      Album Description

The second full-length album by Les Fradkin & Get Wet, "A Day At The Beach," skillfully merges a number of majestic instrumental guitar styles and surf-rock influences. He won over guitar fans with his first surf-rock extravaganza, 1999's Splash!, yet with the 2001 release of A Day At The Beach Fradkin set a new standard of excellence. Although he grew up on early Ventures, Dick Dale and Duane Eddy, Fradkin's penchant for musical drama and an appreciation for classical masters like Pagannini, Mozart and Bach—as well as hard rock guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen—comes across loud and clear on the sweeping, guitar-centric vision of A Day At The Beach. Leading off with the riff-roaring title track, "A Day At The Beach"—a reverb-soaked guitar wrangler that would fit perfectly on a `60s Ventures album—Fradkin hits the bullseye repeatedly on exceptional tracks like "Key West Sunset"—with it's noteworthy Shadows flavor—and the lofty "Nature Calls." In addition to the fine originals, A Day At The Beach also finds the guitarist putting his own stamp on several covers, including a notable Get Wet take of the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" and a visionary "Beck's Bolero", from the first Jeff Beck solo album, Truth. Tailor made for `instro' guitar enthusiasts as well as those looking to rediscover the classic surf-rock sound of the `60s, A Day At The Beach is bound to become a favorite among surf-rockers of all ages for years to come. Catch the wave!
