Not Bad But A Weak Attempt.......2007-02-11
I do hope DM intends to put out another box set like this and includes some of the remixes they left off (read: all of the remixes they left off). Disc 1 and 2 are all right, but the choice of remixes leaves MUCH to be desired. Some are standards, some are flat out crap. The bonus disc, #3, fairs a bit better. The alt "People are People" remix by Sherwood is a total waste. Better left on the cutting room floor.
Seriously, DM needs another set of remixes. This box set doesn't do them justice and will leave most fans flaccid.

Ma continues to Expand his Repertoire.......2003-10-17
Ma has traveled from the beautiful solitude of the solo Bach Sonatas to the ravishing sensuousness of the Tango to "modern" chamber music and now to sophisticated jazz settings. Each of these pieces seems written with him in mind (and maybe that was the case) and if not, it is as near a perfect fit as one can imagine. The yearning of the cello combines with the other instruments to produce some of the most beautiful sounds around. This is a winner.
Bolling and Ma--a combination made in heaven!.......2002-10-07
"Baroque in Rhythm" opens the album with a, well, baroque sound. Ma serenely carries the first few minutes of the song himself, when Bolling and his bassist and drummer come in for back-up. The result is pure, propulsive magic. "Galop" has the feel of a musical dressage session, with Ma's cello richly filling the role of spirited horse, and Bolling's piano providing a prancing, mincing sound to back up the illusion. "Romantique" starts off sounding as though it's actually going to be a cheesy lounge ballad, but it soon turns mystical and minor and rich. Bolling can pack regret and memory and smoky sadness into piano-playing like practically no one else I know. "Romantique" is truly a magically evocative composition. On the song "Cello Fan," Bolling's piano and Ma's cello playfully sound as though they're racing each other, or else talking to each other at very high speed, each rushing to outdo the other. It's great breathless fun, and the whole album is a treasure.

I think this music is intended for adults, though the photo on the cover is of a sleeping baby. In any event, Schumann's work, Scenes From Childhood, Op. 15, featured here is more likely to bolt you out of bed than put you to sleep, as the mike is far too close to the piano being played by Cyprien Katsaris. Purcell's Adagio from The Indian Queen is magnificent, performed by John Elliott Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. The Weird Award goes to triple harpist Tim Hobrough and lutenist Stephen Barber for their bizarre, spiky rendition of Minuets Nos. 4 and 5 from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. I would like to meet Bill Holland, producer of all these Atlantic Records classical compilations. He's programmed Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 on three different CDs, billed alternately as sensuous, romantic, and now here: good for a long snooze. --Gwendolyn FreedCustomer Reviews:

What sets this CD apart is supreme music performance. Every composition is performed flawlessly, with real feeling and passion. There is a good reason why this CD that was released in 1997 is still around and costs over ten dollars. This reason is called quality.

Not "Ultimate", but Wonderful!.......2007-03-29
As good a guitarist as Julian Bream is, one must begin by acknowledging that the title of this 2-CD set containing 32 admittedly seminal pieces written for hand-played strings ( primarily, the lute) is a tad hyperbolistic. An "Ultimate" collection of anything would have to be more complete, by definition, than any two CDs can be and, again, it almost goes without saying that no two people are apt to be in total agreement about what should or should not have been included in any such collection. All caveats considered and aside, this is, indeed, a thoughtfully selected and masterfully performed collection of what is, unarguably, some of the very best classical pieces ever written for the lute. Bream plays some of them on the guitar and others on a renaissance lute - the latter giving a somewhat truer indication of the stylings and musical nuances intended by the various composers. But, even the pieces he plays on the guitar - an instrument that, in it's current form, did not exist when many of the pieces were originally composed - are sensitive and lyrical interpretations that sound as if they MIGHT have been composed for the guitar.
Without spending space here reiterating the specific pieces, their titles and lengths, I will simply list the composers whose works Bream presents so nicely in this collection. They span a range of about five centuries beginning in the time of England's Elizabeth I and spanning the years through to the 20th Century's premier Spanish and Brazilian classical guitar composers. The list reads like a `Whose Who" of classical plucked-string instrument music and of composers whose keyboard compositions work particularly well on the strings of a lute or guitar, and includes;
- John Dowland
- Francis Cutting
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Gaspar Sanz (*)
- Mateo Albeniz (*)
- Manuel de Falla
- Enrique Granados (*)
- Hector Villa-Lobos, and
- Joaquin Rodrigo
(*) = Pieces originally written for keyboard play.
Every classical guitarist has his own recognizable style and approach to the instrument and the material. An experience listener would not confuse Bream's work with that of Andres Segovia, for example: but it is not that one is better than the other. Each, in his own distinctive way, is simply superb. Though the Spanish influence is clearly audible with both musicians, Bream's stylings have a more contemporary lilt and inflection than do those of Segovia; he makes each piece his own. One suspects that each time he plays a piece it comes out differently according to the moment, his mood, the instrument and God knows what else. Segovia, on the other hand, was well known for his constancy once he had found a version of each piece that fully suited his own ear and temperament.
While I am admittedly a Segovia fan, I find Bream's renditions to be noticeably fresher and each infused with an aura of presence in the here-and-now which I find especially enjoyable.
The collection is neither complete not `ultimate', but it is VERY good and well worth having in any collection of classical guitar music. In fact, for audiophiles not familiar with this genre, it is a fair place to begin to develop an ear for and a listener's knowledge of and experience with the classical guitar.
I recommend it highly.
Everyone would love this album!.......2007-01-16
Incredible.......2005-10-24
He is especially amazing in the second CD, with some of the solo guitar transcriptions of Albeniz. His rendition of Rodrigo's three pieces is also sublime.
I can't imagine anybody buying this cd then regretting it.
One well worth the price of two.......2004-09-25
Speaking as a musician I find the selections and the production of the first cd problematic. We get a few of the more lightweight examples of renaissance lute and baroque guitar (but no JS Bach and no (solo) baroque lute work); we get no vihuela repertoire and nothing truly representative of classical period composition. We do have all six movements from two contrasting concertos but the remainder of the cd consists mostly of neo-romantic repertoire from the twentieth century. Worse still, the recording quality is highly variable; for example one of the Villa Lobos pieces sounds as though it was recorded in an indoor swimming complex. Given the cd's title more care should have been taken to better represent Bream's career and musical diversity. In the opinion of one familiar with Bream's output this is a disappointing selection. Well played but not representative of the artist nor the art form.
However the opposite is the case with the second cd. These recordings were made at a time when Bream set out to commit to (then) vinyl, via the guitar, the musical heritage of Spain. Bream here was at the height of his interpretive power - and a fine film documentary also resulted from this endeavour.
The inclusion of the Rodrigo set makes this cd a better buy than the original Albeniz and Granados recording, although those who find this compilation rewarding might perhaps profit from researching Bream's catalogue, and adding the complete recording from which the Rodrigo is sourced (circa 1980-90) to their collection.
As for the Albeniz and Granados Bream offers his own transcriptions. These tread a fine line between fidelity to the piano scores and Bream's concept of what works on the guitar. As a general observation Bream seeks to include significantly more of the original score's textures than do many of his peers (e.g. J Williams, P Romero). At the same time he is not averse to significantly modifying the original (e.g. amongst others 'Granada' and 'Cordoba'). Such a process is part of any transcription but here the results are not only excellent but also personal to Bream, as a result we have further confirmation of the craft of a great performing artist.
Every listener will discover their own favourites and I have more than space allows me to relate. I believe that Bream brings more expression to his performances of the Valses Poeticos by Granados than any other guitarist I have heard, and the Passacaglia by Rodrigo is played with such a sense of a brooding menace that my spine tingles every time I listen to it.
The second cd alone is worth twice the compilation's asking price.

Fine, Exemplary Playing From Friedrich Gulda.......2007-06-09
Was Bach a Robot?.......2007-04-18
Moreover, the piano sounds really bad. It took me weeks to listen to the whole recording.
Another reviewer mentioned finding a recording on an instrument closer to what Bach had. Not only is the sound closer but the tuning is more accurate as well. Baroque tuning is a bit lower and when played in the lower tuning, all the pieces take on a much different meaning. Find a recording using harpsichord or clavichord.
I threw this recording out.
beginner's lessons mastered.......2007-01-08
There is something amusingly ironic about the phenomenon. Keyboard master Friedrich Gulda plays pieces originally composed by J.S. Bach for beginners on a modern piano that Bach might have felt was a machine lowered from Mars. If he knew about Mars.
The result is not historically accurate in any rigid sense of the term. Just superb.
That does it for me. This recording is best owned along with a performance on something closer to the 'original instrument'. But it also stands alone as an assertive, modern, tough-minded interpretation of one of Western music's grand deities.
No one has ever done fugue like Bach. It is virtually his native musical tongue.
Fans of the 1993 film 'The Remains of the Day' (Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Christopher Reeve) will welcome the Prelude #2 in C, though they may not have known at the time whence came that beguiling musical theme from this reviewer's favorite movie.
The good folks at Philips Classics (Duo) are once again to be commended for wise choices.
Somewhat dry and odd performance, I did not like it at all.......2006-06-10
I tend to be tolerant of perverse performances such as Glenn Gould...but at least Gould has energy, intensity, flow. This...is just annoying to listen to. I'd choose any mediocre pianist playing the WTC in a "normal" way over this strange and unpleasant performance. Get a different CD of the WTC, not this one.

Gulda tire son jeu à partir d'un piano réglé «Bach».
Le timbre est prompt, ce qui donne une musicalité spontanée,
sans être trop ample à la manière des grands pianos à queue.
Quelquefois, on croirait entendre un piano droit;
ce qui semble convenir tout à fait à Bach.
Très belle version à mon humble avis.

Depeche Mode Remixes 1.......2005-01-25
It is difficult to remix Depeche Mode when they have such great songs to begin with. So I find it hard to add anything new to the originals to make them seem better.
Some of the beats are okay and some remixes work better than others. The list price is way too much for what you get.
Overall though, you'd be much better starting with the individual albums themselves.
Get the originals instead.......2004-12-31
What the?.......2004-12-30
Thats a reason why some of you people dont like it,Because you arent an adult,Maybe you are a teenager like me.
Girls who go to the clubs like this kind of music for goin' out arround there and dance with their guys.
It's not totally for just listening arround,It's more for like having it on a club.
This CD is great,It tries to revive ssome of the old songs DM has made so far. These remixes might be kind of Electro or Dance but this new version of Enjoy The Silence that was made by Linkin Park is more rock wich I love it and I hear it all the time. But it would of been nicer if DM Makes again these songs with a better sound,I mean,Revive them theirselfs not asking help to other guys to remix it.It just keeps being the old thing but with a new sound.Wich i think that stuff from 2004 dont go with stuff from the 80s or close to the 90s.So thats what I think. But it would of been nicer if Depeche Mode itself revives these songs singing them again and giving it another sound,Or just remixing themselfs. Depeche Mode is a very good band,If a band like Linkin Park can remix songs,Why not DM? DM has more experience and would come up with excellent remixes.
