Chanticleer's repertoire ranges through many centuries. On this recording, the group again proves its infinite versatility in a program of gospel music and spirituals. The singing is so authentic that one feels like a participant in a gospel meeting, swaying to the rhythm with the crowd. Contributing greatly to the impact is Chanticleer's guest, Yvette A. Funder. Possessor of a voice remarkable for its range, power, and flexibility, she brings to the music the empathy and authority of one born and raised in the tradition, whether leading call-and-response, engaging in improvisations that soar high above the chorus, crooning softly in meditation, or shouting in ecstasy. (She is also an active Bishop ministering to the poor and afflicted, and the founder of various social service agencies in California.) Several songs include soloists drawn from the chorus as well, most notably a tenor, a countertenor and a bass who provides a rhythmic ostinato. The program, designed for maximum variety of tempo, mood, character and texture, includes many favorite songs and spirituals, such as "Amazing Grace," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child." The arrangements by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's Music Director for 20 years, are admirably simple and very good; only a few are marred by awkward modulations or overly sophisticated, Hollywood-inspired effects. Most of them are for a cappella voices. Jennings also contributes a new original composition: "Be still and Know that I'm God." Repeating these words like an invocation, it builds a cumulative drama with increasingly wild, elaborate improvisations in call-and-response between soloist and chorus; supported by a prominent piano part that includes solos, chordal and running passages, it ends with a rousing climax. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Chanticleer, with Bp. Flunder: INDEED - How Very Sweet The Sound.......2006-02-10
The arrangements of new and old gospel standards have been set by counter-tenor Joseph Jennings - a leading Chanticleer member of long standing - intently drawing upon both the florid improvisations of the soloists and gospel groups climbing ever so dazzlingly into the fiery chariots that sacred texts say carried off the prophet; and yes, rooted as well in the impeccably crafted close harmonies and inwardly solid strength of gospel quartets and ensembles like Fisk University's Jubilee Singers and many other exemplars.
So, when you listen to this one you will be immediately surrounded by that amazing and great, gathering could of witnesses. The messages are familiar: Keep your hands on the plow. Surely God is able. There is a balm in Gilead.
Like the famous vocal work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, his Serenade to Music as written for a star-crossed group of well-known British soloists of the era; so this gospel outing brings the small male ensemble Chanticleer to the fore - both as a vocal group and as a fabulous collection of solo voices who are prodigiously gifted vocal stars in their own rights. Capping off Chanticleer as an embarrassment of riches is a guest turn by San Francisco's own Bishop Yvette Flunder. She is the real deal, too, as both an ordained minister whose leadership in black churches has blazed fireworks in celebration of melding religion with social justice, and a Jen-U-Wine good news singer who can preach and pray and moan with the best of them.
Only the superhumanly perfected intonation of their cappella group singing, as well as the superb blend and polish of the Chanticleer dozen, will remind a listener than this group is as famous for its Flemish medieval polyphony or its unerring Purcellian clarity, as any other ensemble of twelve voices now appearing before us.
So, forget all the categories and musicology boxes which would seal off gospel music from pre-Bach cathedral masters of polyphony. With this CD we can just revel in the mysteries of good music, regardless. Yeah, Josquin, I'm talking bout you - Sit down servant, there's plenty good room.
Five stars. Highly recommended.

How Angry the Sound?.......2005-01-02
I guess this as an attempt to make gospel music "hip." With songs like "Jesus Hits Like An Atomic Bomb" and "What You Gon' Do When the World's On Fire?" the lyrics are like walking a American urban street being threatened by strangers. Far from being uplifting, the songs are decidedly unfriendly. The feel of the music reminded more of the howling noises I suffered as a forced member of my parent's Kansas Methodist Church than the sweet, honest sounds of real gospel music. That intangible thing I get from listening to gospel music that is heartfelt and painfully honest, even if deluded, was nowhere to be heard in "How Sweet the Sound." Instead, the music is chant-like, monotonous, and cold.
I would not recommend this record to anyone outside of the Midwest. If you miss the sterile sounds of a Midwestern protestant church in full howl, this might be your cup of weak wine. If gospel music is what you're looking for, look elsewhere.
This CD is the bomb!.......2004-11-28

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Absolutely Outstanding!!!.......2005-02-12
-"Te Lucis Ante Terminum (I)" This begins with Gregorian chant done in the way that God intended for it to be sung. When I am listening to this, I imagine it being performed in an English cathedral, and I imagine the entire building resonating with the music. After the opening unison Gregorian chant, the music changes into a polyphonic and harmonic style that is a very interesting textural contrast. Wonderful!
-"The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah" This is a wonderful example of the highest form of English polyphony. I have a CD that has the Choir of King's College performing the "Lamentations", however, the King's Singers' version on this CD is much clearer and richer.
If you like this type of music, then this album is for you. Even if you are not sure if you like this kind of music, I would still recommend purchasing this recording. You won't regret it.
Not to be missed!.......2002-01-22
The album contains an exceptional recording of Tallis's "The Lamentations of Jeremiah" which are virtually unperformed in the music world, but are exquisite pieces of vocal polyphony. I highly recommend this album for that reason alone.
Listen to it as an activity in and of itself, with no background noise if possible. You will be rewarded! Also, it is a great album to help you fall asleep, if you use music to relax.
If you like Early music, you MUST acquire this CD! End of story!

The King's Singers Overcome Obsticles of Byrd and Tallis.......2000-06-10
I honetly do not know much about Tallis, but I think that "Te Lucias ante Termnium I" shows well defined and blended harmonies while focusing on an excellent bass line. "Haec Dies" sounded like two different SATB choirs copying each other while actually the music is only SSATTB; they made a masterpiece out of a song that only consists of: 'Haec dies, quam fecit Dominus, Exultemus, et laetemur, inea, Alleluia'. The melodies were bouncy and fizzed with intense pop and curiosity to what was coming up, how the style format was going to suprise you next. "Beata Viscera Maria Virgins" demonstrated brilliant sections as well as dramatic dynamics. "Ave Verum Corpus" drifted me into a daze with beautiful melody lines to relax to. "Viqilate" created a sea of harmonies using the basic lyric line while brilliantly intensifying with each word.
The King's Singers have once again proved they are serious singers by tackling a new challenge: music that invloes dramatic dynamics and does not always have smooth transitions. Not only did they manage to pull it off, they also perfected the music and performed it with such eloquency it almost sounds easy. Almost. I have personally performed some music composed by William Byrd, and it is not easy. That is all part of brilliance. '-English Renaissance' has definitly proved that the King's Singers can overcome obsticles with grace and purify the rest, such as "You Are the New Day", with their beautiful sound. This is one album that is worth the trouble to understand.

World of Sand + 2
Servant Manufacturer: Retroactive Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:

Product Description
SERVANT WORLD OF SAND Building on the experience and success of their first two classic rockn-roll albums, the bands third release hit the streets in 1982. WORLD OF SAND truly hit a nerve with the public, selling 20,000 albums in just the first two months alone! World of Sand combined Servant's muscular rock with a serious recording budget and major-league production. Offering up 10 polished rock tunes that sometimes hinted at the new wave direction the band would embrace on future albums. The Christian rock, apologetic 'Jungle Music' appeared on that album, complete with references to nearly all of the other Christian rock bands on the scene. The song poked fun at the critique still being lobbed by anti-rock preachers. The chorus chanted, 'Jungle music, can God really use it?' Their answer was a resounding yes. When the band toured the nation for this release, Christian rock icons, Petra were their opening act. Jungle Musicmight be described as an eerie, haunting hard rock tune, with a message that hit as hard as the music. The quasi-metal sounding Cog In the Wheel proves to be every bit as heavy as Resurrection Band, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin. The rest of the album features classic after classic of hook-filled rock and roll that fought the good fight against lukewarm Christianity. Ahead of its time, WORLD OF SAND is a must purchase for fans of Cheap Trick, DeGarmo & Key, Joe English Band, Resurrection Band, and Petra.Customer Reviews:
I love it!.......2006-10-24
That said, I love Servant. They remain after all these years my favorite band. We were all part of a Jesus Movement commune, the Highway Missionaries, and we didn't really have a lot of written theological texts. But after the Bible, the songs of Servant really became our systematic theology. Servant didn't just preach- they lived it. They toured constantly because they saw it as ministry. They didn't earn anything from their work, and the concerts were cheap or free, so that people could experience the music. It was the band who tore down and set up, following the mandate of their name. And there was so much theatre involved in their productions it spoiled all concerts afterward for me, as I discovered that most bands just played music!
"Two Masters" was classic Servant, suggesting that actually following what Christ says is quite a different thing from merely claiming His name. "New Revolution" is a rallying cry to joy that will inspire, and a haunting, bittersweet melody can be found in "Long Hard Fight". "Cheap Talk" uses the same theme as "Two Masters", but with stuttering inspiration that is a pleasure to listen to.
Something has always spoken to me through "Cog in the Wheel". It just seemed...so America.
"He had a number, no name,
And he was trapped in the game.
There had to be something more to living,
Then waiting to die."
Much of the money that supported our commune and allowed us to eat came from the treeplanters, who sacrificed their backs and hours of work for the good of the whole. "Treeplanter Stomp" is Servant's only instrumental, and an homage to them.
"Jungle Music" uses wit to preach against those who consider rock n'roll the devil's music- and there was a lot of them back in the day. It speaks of the fear that the naysayers have of those who aren't following Christ. My dad, Jim, and Bruce discuss the popular Christian groups of the day in a conversation at the end of the song.
And "Sudden Death" still makes me cry when I listen to it, the story of my brother Seth's death. It begins with conversation between Seth and my mom and a member of the community who would later die, and graphically takes you through the car accident, the anger of my mom at God, the loss of faith, and the beginnings of hope. I have always felt that Sudden Death doesn't end with that song, but you must continue to listen with the next song, "Come, Jesus, Come".

Moving, intense music........2006-04-30
I love the sound and style of Russian music, and this CD has been wonderful when I'm in the mood for something more meaningful.
I'm not a music expert or Russian linguist, nor will you find me in a church on Sunday. I enjoy good music of all forms, and no matter what your religion or linguistic affiliation, this is excellent music that is sure to add something to your collection.

Excellent Russian Music.......2000-10-04
I'm not sure if this is professional, semi-professional, or a group that meets weekly, but the results are quite good. Recording quality here is generally good and the choir has the requisite low bass section (the first track will let you know that). There are times when intonation and ensemble seem to slip away slightly, which keeps this recording from cracking the upper echelon. Some of the soloists seem uncertain at times, as well.
The inclusion of texts in Cyrillic letters, transliterated Russian, and English is an excellent addition that I wish CDs used more often. The texts make it easier to understand the message and to learn about the Russian language (definitely not the easiet language in which to sing). In fact, the CD booklet is so big that it scarcely fits into the jewel box.
I enjoy having this CD in my library and I would encourage those interested in choral music, Russian music, or even those learning Russian to buy it. I can't think of a better way to learn about a language and a culture.

Isn't this fact a shame? Let's revive sacred music--it's so uplifting to the body, mind and spirit! This cd will surprise you--it sure has me. Angels of Ecstasy includes "more soothing spiritual classics by: Verdi, Beethoven, Faure, Poulenc" and many more.
Angels of Ecstasy is so mesmerizing that I keep listening to it on repeat (which I rarely do) and still cannot begin to describe its Beauty! Must be the title, eh? Surely feels like the angels above had a huge part in the inspiration of this blessed music! If you're reading this, I think you are meant to have it and be blessed. It has a total running time of 74:22 for your listening pleasure. Enjoy and let yourself be swept away! o8E
