Limited edition Japanese pressing. This is a glimpse of the future--and not because of its huge influence and umpteen million sales. The poor-little-rich-boy protest 'Out Ta Get Me' intimates that Axl Rose's egotism and martyr complex were soon to grow bigger than his head; still, Appetite's night-train wreck of punk and metal sounds and sensibilities make it more than just an emblem of its time. 5 out of 5 stars GN'R made hard rock fashionable again in the late 80's.......2007-06-21

THE BAND: William "Axl" Rose (vocals, synth, percussion), Saul "Slash" Hudson (guitars), Izzy Stradlin - born: Jeff Isbell (guitars), Michael "Duff" McKagan (bass), Steven Adler (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1987) 12 tracks clocking in at approximately 53 minutes. Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, all original album artwork, and thank you's. Recorded at Rumbo Studios (Canoga Park, CA), Take One Studios (Burbank, CA) and Can Am Studios (Tarzana, CA). Label - Geffen Records.

COMMENTS: Some good music was released by some well known bands in 1987 - Aerosmith (a nice comeback with "Permanent Vacation"), Def Leppard ("Hysteria"), Motley Crue ("Girls, Girls, Girls"), Dokken ("Back For The Attack"), and Whitesnake (self titled - featuring John Sykes), etc. But the one album that made the most impact was "Appetite For Destruction". Just another album from a glammy tattooed L.A. hair band? No chance. The music was instantly cool... fusing elements of hard rock, blues and metal into one... full of crunchy guitars, attitude, catchy hooks, and vocals like no other. GN'R's debut is the 4th highest selling album of the entire 80's decade (15+ million units sold in the U.S. alone... only behind Michael Jackson's "Thriller", AC/DC's "Back In Black", and Springsteen's "Born In The USA"); and Rolling Stone magazine currently ranks it at #61 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Rose and Slash had a much publicized feud (and 20 years later are still at it)... and the band imploded in the mid 90's. A short life with one incredibly solid debut album, some odd leftovers on "GN'R Lies" (1988), two good albums in '91 with "Use Your Illusion I & II" (though had they taken the best songs from each and put them on one album - it would have rivaled "Appetite For Destruction"), and a bunch of covers on "The Spaghetti Incident?" (1993). The band entered the music world with a ferocious bang, and the fizzled away without much noise. "Appetite" reminds me of one of my all-time favorite albums - Aerosmith "Rocks" (1976) - full of style, swagger, and simply great rock & roll music... destined to be a classic. The group successfully re-energised the genre in the late 80's with shameless gusto. The album gained momentum slowly - and exactly one year after its release, reached #1 on the Billboard charts. "Sweet Child O' Mine" became a #1 single and proved to be the album's selling point. "Paradise City" was the band's 2nd Top 10 hit. And after being re-released, "Welcome To The Jungle" achieved the same Top 10 status. As good as the 3 big hits here were, the rest of the album rocked on almost the same level. The 1st 9 songs are/were amazing and I put the deep album tracks right up there with the hits - "It's So Easy", "Nightrain", "Mr. Brownstone", "Think About You", and "My Michelle" are all classic GN'R tunes. Only 2 things negative regarding this album and GN'R - 1. the tail end of the album (specifically "You're Crazy", "Anything Goes" and "Rocket Queen") seemed to be a bit of a let down... I wish the album ended with a bigger bang; and 2. Axl Rose's antics on and off stage were disappointing. With that being said though, you simply can't deny the music on this album. A great debut - a classic! Very necessary in any rock library (5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars Appetite for Greatness.......2007-06-11

Appetite for Destruction - by Guns N' Roses - is one of the best Rock and Roll albums to be released in the decades before and the decades that followed. It was jolt of electricity to the Rock and Roll scene. There were songs here for fans of every genre as the hit Sweet Child O' Mine and Welcome To The Jungle were crossover hits enjoyed by metal fans and pop fans alike. The impact of these songs are still felt today, as Jungle is even played at NBA basketball games, and sports radio talk shows. But the real gems on this CD are the harder rocking offerings like It's So Easy, Nightrain, and My Michelle. If I have to put together my "stranded on a desert island list" this CD easily makes the cut. My personal favorites are Think About You and Rocket Queen. There is not a weak song amongst this group. The title is appropriate as the only thing that could derail this outstanding group was its own appetite for destruction, and new faces both literally and figuatively. I did have th opportunity to catch Guns and Roses in concert (with Metallica) in Oakland, and they were excellent.

If you are looking for the definitive post 70's rock and roll album, you have found it. Tremendous... 5 strong stars! Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-05-20

At the age of 60 I have discovered Guns N' Roses. I had to go and buy all the other CDs as well. It's never too late to find a really good Rock and Roll band.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Rock Album Ever.......2007-05-16

Appetite for Destruction is a definitive hard rock album from a legendary band. From the opening track, Welcome to the Jungle, through other hits such as Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine, this is Guns N' Roses debut album, and the album that moved them from being homeless musicians to multi-millionaires. Get this album, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Guns And Roses - One Of The Great Debut Albums Of All Time.......2007-04-29

I still remember the first time I heard "Welcome To The Jungle" on the radio. It immediately caught my attention as something completely different and very cool. To this day when I hear those opening guitar chords and Axle's opening scream in a sports arena (where it is played more than ever today) it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge. The cool thing is that the rest of the album was also very very good. In the sea of bands that came out of L.A. in the 80's, Guns and Roses had that indefinable something that set them apart from the rest of the lot. They were a band of street punks that hit their peak right off the bat with this album and unfortunately had no where to go but down after this. This album is angry, nasty, grungy, metallic, and sleazy in all it's glory. Yes, the language is explicit, and the lyrics are at times derogatory towards women, but the material is still, in some ways, what rock n roll is all about. The music is consistently great, with Slash, Stradlin, Adler, and McCagen meshing perfectly as a unit to induce what they were trying to accomplish. As a vocalist Axle Rose is the perfect foil to the rest of the band. Whether you can stand him as a person or not there is no doubt that he was the perfect vocalist for this particular band. Several huge hits came from the album including "Jungle", "Paradise City", and "Sweet Child O' Mine", but most of the rest of the tracks on the disc are just as strong. Axle's snarl belts out rock classics like "Nightrain", "Mr. Brownstone", "My Michelle", "It's So Easy", and "Rocket Queen". To this day this remains one of the best albums in my collection to crank up after you have had a bad day. All of the angst and vile contained within, set to a perfect musical soundtrack; will never fail to cheer me up. "Appetite For Destruction" would prove to be one of the most important rock albums of the 80's and remains one of the best debut albums by any band anywhere in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars the best album ever made.......2005-10-17

if you like rock, then this is an album u havta have. If you like music, then this is an album u havta have. If you have a pulse, then this is an album u havta have.
Basically this album should be owned by everyone who likes music and appreciates the art form. This is obviously a classic album, yet is contemporary. You know its a good album when after x amount of years, and you still wanna listen to it. I myself am a huge gnr fan. I got into the music when November Rain hit the charts (I was a preteen then...oh and I suggest you do urself a favour and get those illusion albums). Anyways, AFD is the best album ever--I still listen to it till this very day, when I go out for my jogs. If you are not familiar w/ the group, let me explain some things: the music is catchy, deep, raw, intense, violent, sweet, dance-able, all wrapped into one. each and EVERY single track is an awsome song--it's like a greatest hits album! This was their debut album (1987) and it was a shot in the arm to the stale hair bands of the 80s. Trust me, you will like it, and appreciate it for all it's worth. All the members of the group played an integral part in the making of the best album of all time, and you will thank them for that!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Guns N' Roses album.......2005-06-01

Appetite For Destruction (1987.) Guns N' Roses' first album.

The eighties were dominated by two major camps of musicans - synth-heavy new wave acts, and heavy metal. Most of the musicians in the heavy metal camp were the glam type, who wore make up and women's clothing for reasons only god knows. But there was more to eighties metal than first meets the eye. Guns N' Roses was one of the heaviest, fastest, and most agressive hard rock/heavy metal bands of the eighties, and of all time. Formed by Axl Rose (formerly of Hollywood Rose) and Tracii Guns (formerly of L.A. Guns), the group released a live EP in 1986 that would get them the recognition they needed from a major record company - and sure enough, they got signed. The band's first full-length album, Appetite For Destruction, came the following year. This has been hailed as the group's best album, despite being their first. Are those people who hold this album in such high regard right? Read on to find out.

To put it simply, eighties heavy metal (and I'm not talkin' the glam kind) doesn't get any better than this. If you were looking for REAL hard rock in the eighties, you'll agree - Guns N' Roses is the band that delivered it. The band's debut album is, without question, their finest hour. Three massive hits from the group came from this album alone - the straight-up, agressive hard rock stylings of Welcome To The Jungle, the pop-metal piece Paradise City, and the classic Sweet Child O' Mine, which has elements of a power ballad, but is still much too heavy a song to be considered such. These three songs almost instantaneously immortalized the band. But, like eighties metal itself, there is more to this album than would meet the eye at first glance. Every song on here is unique. Though a few songs do sound similar, they all have a sound all their own. And there are plenty of underrated masterpieces to go around - My Michelle, Nightrain, and Mr. Brownstone come to mind. If this album isn't in your heavy metal collection yet, you don't have an eighties metal collection.

There's really not much I can say about the editions of this album available. There's an explicit version and an edited version, and that's all there is to say. Both are readily available, and the sound quality on the album is good enough that there is really no need for remastering. Take my advice, though - get the explicit version so you can hear the music as the band intended. After all, edited albums are crap.

Guns N' Roses' 1987 debut album proved that they were here to stay. And they would be, for a few more years anyway. Four more Guns N' Roses albums would be released in the years that followed, but not one of them would measure up to the success of Appetite. If you're new to the band, start with this album - NOT that godawful hits compilation that the record company released. This ain't no greatest hits band. No fan of heavy metal should be without this album, period.

1 out of 5 stars ONLY THE BOOKLET IS EDITED-NOT MUSIC!.......2005-05-20

Just to clear up some confusion, the booklet is what is edited. The unedited version, has a cartoonish picture of a woman who has just been raped by some kind of robot monster thing. The music is not edited. Pointless idea really! Just thought this would help someone out there.....music gets 5 stars, whosever idea this was gets 0 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Buy the unedited album........2005-01-02

Appetite for Destruction is arguably the best debut album of all time. The "censored" version is not very good. Most of the material is very poorly censored and although I respect the idea of censoring the music, I don't support it - because frankly kids should not be listening to Guns N' Roses, and if adults have a problem with mild language (and it is quite mild here) they just shouldn't be listening to Gn'R! Sometimes profanity filters are good (such as the one I purchased for my television for family viewing) - but editing a hard rock CD isn't a good idea since the content to begin with is pretty hardcore. I mean, the very idea of censoring "naughty words" from ROCKET QUEEN is hilarious - forget about the recorded female orgasm that plays midway through, just make sure they don't say any bad words!

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Real "Rock".......2005-06-02

Former Bro' Cane frontman Damon Johnson and ex-Virgos Merlot guitarists Jason Marchant and Deacon Ledbetter combine to create a solid blend of earnest sincerity and old school rock attitude on Dead Man's Vitamin. Johnson's world-weary, yet melodic vocals are contemplative and burning on the reflective "Gun To My Head" and the quasi-psychedelic "Ballad Of The Lost." In contrast, Marchant and Leadbetter's gutbucket riffage raises the stoner anthem "Amphetamine" and the almost Motley Crue sounding "Why Fight It" to fist pumping heights not heard since the heyday of G'N'R. Think of it as 90's rock with a jolt of 80's swagger for good measure.
