not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

I bought this for the Kate Smith tune, but soon realized, I had Much more ! Many songs I've heard all My Life at Parades and at Church. In this day and age We live in, this certainly lifts your spirits. I think this would be a very good basic "CD" for everyone to have in their collection, who is America minded !

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

King Black Acid - 'Sunlit' (Cavity Search).......2006-11-26

Looks to be King Black Acid's second effort. About as good as 'Womb Star Sessions' (see my review). This is just plain good 'ol dreamy space-like rock. Three lengthy tracks, are "Some Things Must Be"(20:35), "Headfull"(18:10) and "Think Away" (21:49). Personnel: Roger Campos-guitar&vocals, Daniel John Riddle-guitar&mixing, Geoff Harrington-keyboards and Scott Adamo-drums. Sit back at drift way-off in another atmosphere. Nice!

This is one of the most amazing albums I've ever been fortunate enough to experience. KBA is really on to something here-- the whole CD consists of three very long tracks, each one focusing on one distinct rhythm without much singing. It allows the band to find basically one good sound for each track, and let it gradually develop into something very powerfully emotional and unforgettable. You won't be able to get this stuff out of your head for days after you listen to it, and eventually it sort of becomes like the musical score for daily life.

Just buy it. It's that good.

A sonic masterpiece.......1999-09-14

Sunlit, King Black Acid's second album is quite an undertaking. The album consists of three songs that each border on about twenty minutes in length. For some bands, a song of that length would dissolve into boring repetition or even worse a god awfully long guitar solo. That is not the case with KBA. This album is a treat. It begins with my favorite KBA track, "somethings must be believed to be seen". Daniel's voice on this song is amazing. I get lost in the lyrics almost as often as I do the music. "headfull" continues in much the same vein as the first track which is a welcome treat. The final track "think away" is an immense construction. The calm, blissed out tone of the first two songs is replaced with an unnerving urgency that leaves you addled and longing for the finer moments of the first track. So that is what you do. The album demands multiple listenings and soon it is so intertwined within your psyche that it becomes your own personal soundtrack. A perfect album with which to lose yourself.

Your Black Star have been playing boring post-rock for a while now. They always sounded to me like they couldn't decide if they wanted to sound like Mogwai or Elliott, so they kind of threw the two styles together. Don't get me wrong, Your Black Star has always been a great band and I've enjoyed their music. It's just that honesty and this new split with Drum:Kan has forced me to realize what my friends had always told me: Your Black Star was boring. Keyword = was.

The opening song, Lousy Smarch Weather, rocks more than anything the band has ever written. It sounds like a B-side from U. S. Songs era Elliott. The drums are gigantic and the guitar plays around gracefully while the bass hides in the back, keeping pace the whole while. Your Black Stars vocalist has a slightly annoying voice but I enjoy it. Think Chris Higdon from Elliott if his voice wasn't so high and he had a cold. And liked to sing thorugh his nose. the thrid song Hell rocks it like I always knew Your Black Star could, a rock song that lasts longer than five minutes and still manages to hold my intrest. Even the re-recorded song Meina Sod sounds more full, more realized. It sounds alive compared to the version found on Grateful Nation.

It seems that the addition of former Elliott member Kevin Ratterman has breathed new life into Your Black Star. Their sound has been given a jolt of energy. Before, with their last effort, it felt like their sound was a foggy haze of rock without much kick and a was a collection of mundane but still enjoyable songs. Maybe it's the production, maybe it's the inclusion of Kevin, maybe the band has just grown. Now instead of sounding like a poor immitation of Elliott they sound like a really good immitation of Elliott with a little bit of their own style added in. While the reason the band has changed remains unlcear, the promise of a killer long player coming from this Louisville band is certain.

Drum:Kan I had never heard of before. They are from Japan I think. They sound like a bland indie rock band from Japan. They're pretty good but I couldn't get into their sound. I think it's the vocalist, it's just strange to hear him singing in English. It sounds like it's forced or too difficult. I dunno, just not my cup of tea. They covered Elliott's Speed of Film which is a fine song.

The album gets four stars because I feel like Drum:Kan only dcreases the impact of the effort from Your Black Star. Or maybe it made YBS sound even better. After hearing the YBS songs, I can't wait for their coming full length. It should be exciting.
