Charming Classical Music for Your Princess.......2007-06-18

I bought this for my little girl when she was a second grader. We both loved the choices. It has all of the famous classical little ballerina pieces.Although she is now a junior in high school-I still enjoy listening to this CD when I want some very recognizable classical music. If you have a little girl who loves to dance and dress up as a princess or watch princess movies, this CD is for you. I believe little boys would enjoy the classical melodies too.

Bed Time Favorite.......2002-01-17

My daughter has played this tape to fall asleep every night since she was 2. She is now 6. She was thrilled when we went to the Nutcracker and they were playing her "Go to Sleep" Music.
I am buying it for my 1-year old niece.

Engaging and Appealing.......2001-12-31

My children (ages 3 1/2 and 18 months) enjoyed this CD so much that it quickly became a favorite, over and above any of their other children's CDs. The music is engaging, the selection appeals to their ears (and feet!) and I would highly recommend it.

Warning: Electronic, not Symphonic.......2001-01-04

The music on this CD is electronically synthesized, not produced by traditional instruments. While this is not necessarily a horrible idea, it is apparent from the first moment of the first track and it did not suit our tastes.

The classical Child at the Ballet.......2000-06-19

Relaxing,moving, and upbeat-this CD has it all! I have a 2 year old who has loved it since the day she was born ,now she loves to dance to it! So, I thought I would bring it into my pre-ballet class that I teach and it was a hit!

This is a wonderful record. The music, mostly mournful in a typically Russian way, enchants ear and heart; the performances are matchless for vocal beauty, expressiveness, and projection of mood, atmosphere, and character, as well as for the incredible quality of the ensemble. DeGaetani, an unusually evocative, versatile artist who tragically died in 1988 at age 56, and Kalish, a splendid pianist equally at home as soloist and in collaboration with singers and instrumentalists, developed an uncanny degree of empathy during their 30-year partnership. Kalish's ability to alternate instantly between leading and supporting is fully displayed in these songs' prominent, often virtuosic piano parts. Together, they bring out the tenderness, simplicity, and sorrow of Rachmaninoff's and Tchaikovsky's moving lamentations and the innocent charm of Mussorgsky's "Nursery" songs without condescending to their childish humor. --Edith Eisler

Another brilliant rendition by the extremely sensitive and artistic duo of De Gaetani and Kalish. Jan DeGaetani especially gives these Russian favourites her gorgeous trademark intimacy; leaving us with a refreshing treatment of Russian repetoire.

Guthrie masters another dream.......2006-08-11

I have read and heard a lot of criticism surrounding Violet Indiana. If you read between the lines of what people are saying, it all boils down to one thing- reviewers just can not get over the fact that Robin Guthrie has recorded songs without Liz Frazier. Truth is, Violet Indiana is a fantastic step in Guthrie's career- it's like he has found a beautiful new color palette to paint with. The writing and performance of these songs is every bit as good as anything Guthrie has done in the past- and Siobhan de Mare's vocals blend beautifully with Guthrie's dreamy guitar compositions. In fact, being able to understand the lyrics that are being sung adds a whole new depth of emotion and meaning to the songs. The lyrics are often tinged with just a hint of sadness, which compliments Guthrie's musical style perfectly. If Guthrie had changed his name for the Violet Indiana CD's, everyone would be giving them five out of five stars. Don't let the nay-sayers sway your opinion- Violet Indiana is lush, beautiful, dreamy, and it will sweep you away from reality as well as anything that Guthrie has done in the past. And escaping from reality for a while is something that is a true gift these days!

Another Violet Indiana album I really WANT to like.......2005-10-11

Like Casino, I want to like Russian Doll. I like Guthrie and de Mare, but the combo just doesn't work for me. With the exception of "New Girl", the tracks are forgettable and over-produced. "New Girl" is Robin Guthrie at his best, and Mare is giving it her all, but even as the best track the two artists' styles work against each other. I find myself being distracted from the mood of the music by the pop lyrics, and sometimes Guthrie's wall-of-noise guitar sounds so out of place under the pop melodies. I'd love to hear de Mare backed up by simpler, more pop-ish music and hear Guthrie's guitar work under a more vocally esoteric singer (like Becke Gainforth.)

Late-night, smoky, sulky romance .......2004-07-25

Violet Indiana is the new project of Robin Guthrie (ex-cocteau twins) and Siobhan de Mare (ex-mono). This is their second proper album (not counting the USA release "Casino" which was a collection of UK EPs and b-sides) after "Roulette". Stand out tracks include "new girl", "you", and "beyond the furr" and "close the world." The album definitelty benefits from repeated listens and is great late night listening. Violet Indiana is a unique act in this world of homogenized, mass produced music.

Pearl Gets These Classic Horowitz Reissues Right.......2007-05-11

Vladimir Horowitz's earliest recordings, believed by some to be his finest, have been reissued numerous times since their initial appearance over 70 years ago.

Horowitz's first recordings were made in RCA's Camden, New Jersey studios in 1928. They consisted of short, "encore" type works such as his own Carmen Variations and Danse Excentrique, Debussy's Serenade, and Dohnanyi's Capriccio. From 1930-1936, Horowitz concentrated his recording activity in London (RCA's European affiliate, HMV, had not been as decimated by the Great Depression than its American counterpart).

This reissue contains some classics. The Liszt Sonata has never been equaled and is a must for any serious collector, as is the Funerailles. But the Hungarian composer's Valse oubliee is played more captivatingly in Horowitz's 1985 recording. It's hard to imagine in this day and age that Horowitz's version of Haydn's E-flat sonata was a world premiere recording, but indeed it was. Its relaxed elegance continues to charm, and it remains more musicologically "correct" than Horowitz's 1951 live version. Horowitz was also an early champion of Scarlatti, and recorded the composer's Capriccio as transcribed by Tausig. The two sonatas included here are among the first recordings of "pure" Scarlatti. The pianist preferred his Bach "un-pure", and the Choral Prelude as transcribed by Busoni is a miracle of line separation and clarity. Horowitz's early foray into Beethoven, the 32 Variations in C minor, is more straightforward and successful than many of his later attempts with this composer.

Horowitz's early Schumann, though technically impeccable, did not quite plumb the depths as in his later recordings. So much the better then, that the pianist limited himself to recording shorter works, including an Arabeske with unmatched legato, an effortless Toccata, and whimsical Traumeswirren. Originally intended as the finale for Schumann's G minor sonata, the Presto Passionato was rejected by the composer's wife as unplayable. Horowitz makes it sound like child's play. (Pearl's is the only reissue that I know of that gets the 78RPM side change right in this piece.)

Horowitz once referred to Chopin and "the only truly great composer for the piano" and he invariably included a selection of the Polish master's music in his recitals. The sampling here includes four technically impeccable Etudes, four Mazurkas, and a remarkably up-tempo Scherzo in E major.

Horowitz also championed "modern" composers like Rachmaninoff and Poulenc. It says much about the changing mores of performing that Horowitz (often condemned these days for violating composers' intentions) received nothing but praise from the many composers he knew personally. While the Poulenc Pastourelle and Toccata are gracious and dazzling, the Rachmaninoff G minor Prelude is disappointingly sloppy. A thrilling Russian Dance from Stravinsky's Petrouchka is also included.

Pearl has handled these old recordings with care, and they sound better than in any other issue thus far. Highest recommendation.

Some odd repertoire choices.......2003-09-25

I admire this singer and her voice a lot. Her best performance is of a selection of Tchaikovsky arias on an album called "The Tchaikovsky Experience". What this lyrico/spinto is doing on this disc in colloratura repertoire associated with Gruberova, Dessai and Sumi Jo, I do not understand.

Tracks that weren't disappointing, were merely unremarkable. Lovely floated high notes and the usual punch she packs when needed, are all there, but as a whole the disc failed to excite me.

I only have the Debut CD which I absolutely adore. Inessa Galante's voice is so unbelieveable and she does it with ease. Looking foreward to adding this CD to my collection

As an artist I have to admit that Inessa Galante's performance is beyond amazing. I had the opportunity of working with her in a performance of La Boheme.She is my idol and the most talented artist I have ever worked with. Her work on this album brings tears to my eyes!
